For me, this has improved the sound subjectively. (From everything I've been able to research, it should improve the -technical performance-, however for audibility I have no evidence to offer you like a properly controlled test.) Having said all that, I am willing to do swapsies with a DAC2 any time ... just let me know, chuckle! Darren Darren, I'm pretty sure the improvement in sq I hear between the DAC2 and DAC1 has got absolutely nothing to do with the 3.5db of headroom the DAC2 has .. most of my music is competently recorded classical and as such isn't brick-walled. Checking peak levels with JRiver I can find some climaxes hit 100% for a very brief moment, but my DAC2 is significantly better all the time, not just at orchestral peaks. You should try one! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How would you spend this windfall? (DAC question)
I used to own a DAC1 HDR, and I now own a DAC2 HGC. The DAC1 was very good, but the DAC2 is, imo, a truly superb DAC. Beautiful, smooth, incredibly resolved, sweet. You can get one on 30 days free trial (and a DAC1 on the same deal), so you could make up your own mind. It also supports native DSD conversion for any DSD downloads you might want, or SACD rips if you can figure out how to do them. Plenty analogue and digital inputs and asynch USB. There are a couple of variants $200 cheaper - the 'D' which is digital inputs only, and the 'L' which drops the headphone outputs. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Digital Audio Myths
There a review of a Musical Fidelity V-DAC II, which has a much touted asynch USB interface, in this month's HiFi News. They measured 10psec of jitter over s/pdif, but 60-90psec over USB - much worse. So asynch USB doesn't seem necessarily to be the answer - it may be the better than non-asynch USB, but it's no guarantee of a good result. By contrast, Stereophile's review of the Benchmark DAC1 USB showed no difference in jitter between s/pdif and USB inputs - and the Benchmark doesn't have asynch USB - just good engineering! -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90360 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Not sure what 'theory' says that it 'should' sound better than a Touch; maybe it will, maybe it won't. Depends on all sorts of things. If the DAC is sensitive to other software running on the computer it is not a good omen imo. Minimising latency is important in studios (where they use s/pdif); async USB has (relatively) enormous amounts of latency in any case so you should be able to run whatever you like on your laptop, otherwise how can the async USB convertor you propose be doing it's job of decoupling the DAC from the netbook. -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88181 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Can a netbook fully replace a squeezebox?
I've played around a bit with using a laptop to replace a squeezebox, as this might suit me more in the future. Didn't really care for foobar - too geeky for me, but I can see how folk like it. I'd probably use Asset UPnP as a UPnP server, with dbpoweramp renaissance as the UPnP player on the netbook/laptop, controlled via Plugplayer on my apple Touch. Alternatively the J River Media Center is a tremendously verstatile player - many advantages over Squeezecenter - which can also be used in a UPnP configuration - and if you are prepared to pay for apps, then Songbook would do for UPnP what iPeng does for Squeezecenter. Essentially once you move away from a squeezebox to a netbook/pc/laptop, there are many alternatives to Squeezecenter, so I suggest playing with the products I mention, rather than trying to bodge squeezecenter into doing stuff it's not designed to. -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88181 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] In Wall speakers for garage conversion
It's quite hard to decouple the speakers from the wall - especially a stud wall and especially if you use 'in-wall' loudspeakers - most of which actually clip to the wall and so transmit a lot of energy to it. Many are just rebadged car speakers too. Not what you want. I'd go for a pair of ATC SCM7s and mount them in a way that decouples them from the wall as much as possible, and make your own grill. Wall brackets might be a good compromise - especially if they are designed by the same people that make the speakers. I agree that many designs have trade-offs. But in the context of this thread, where the o/p was trying to improve a Touch by (among other things) changing the power cable on his NAS, I am trying to suggest that, in the first instance, the best people to improve a Touch are Logitech themselves; the Touch is designed to one price, a Transporter to a considerably higher price so is more likely to offer an improvement than 3rd party products. Perhaps there are ways of improving a Transporter too. Add streaming options when you've got some more money. -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84903 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The subtle differences between modern dacs and/or transports are irrelevant in comparison to getting the 20-200 hz frequencies to only vary -+ 2db and cutting the 3khz-10khz by 2.5 db as my speakers are on the bright side, but very transparent. That´s not my setup btw. I use Touch into the CA 840C Dac with Inguz as previously stated. Which DACs 'regardless of price' have you actually tried? Could Inguz not 'improve' those equally? -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84903 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HDTracks raises prices - again
The HDTracks Rolling Stones material comes from DSD remasters done around 2002 by ABCKO and Bob Ludwig which were then released on dual format CD/SACD. Many years of research went into locating the original mono and stereo analog tapes that would be used in ABKCO's Rolling Stones Remastered Series. That research revealed a treasure trove of first generation tapes - true stereo masters from The Stones' 1964 Chess Studios sessions including the unedited version of 2120 South Michigan Avenue, Beggar's Banquet at its correct speed and Let It Bleed with splicing that indicates that the original intention was to leave little spacing between each cut. For the analog to digital transfers, vintage reel-to-reel tape machines were utilized - a modified Ampex 351 with original tube electronics (full track mono and two track stereo) and an Ampex ATR-102 modified with Aria Discrete Class-A Electronics (full track mono and two track stereo). A Sonoma DSD digital audio workstation was the chosen high resolution format and Meitner Design ADC8 and DAC8 MKlV converters were used for the conversion process. Cables used were the cryogenically frozen type supplied to us by Gus Skinas of Super Audio Center. Gus also provided much guidance to Jody Klein, Steve Rosenthal and myself for our first time use of DSD technology. For this HD Tracks release, the Bob Ludwig mastered DSD files were converted to both 176.4kHz and 88.2kHz high resolution PCM with Weiss Saracon conversion software. - Teri Landi, Archivist and Engineer, ABKCO Music Records -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86017 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

soundcheck - is your DAC wide open to RF or noise on the mains? Since when has 40 year old analogue tape been 24/192? Much of the HDTracks catalogue is similarly ancient and suspect - they are selling very little that has been recorded and mastered in hi-res digital. -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86017 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Mynb - yep, I have many superb Linn CDs/HDCDs/SACDs and I've ripped them to HDCD where possible. I've also bought some of their Studio Master downloads. All magnificent. The most recent Mackerras Mozart Symphony set is an especial favourite of mine - an unforgettable experience. They've just won Gramophone record company of the year. I think they are far more entitled to call their downloads genuine 24/192 than HDtracks. -- JezA JezA's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86017 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
