Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Use of Acronyms

2013-07-24 Thread Cheri Mello
I live in southern California, not too far from the beach. OP is a
clothing brand, which is the symbol for "Ocean Pacific." So that is what
OP is to me.

Going to genealogy conferences, giving lectures, etc, I run into many
genealogists. It used to be considered a hobby for more of our senior
citizens. It's not anymore. However, I would say that it's still about
60-70% seniors (over 65 years of age). Many people in that age range did
not grow up using these abbreviations and many aren't interested in
learning. So if you use them, you run the risk of losing about 60-70% of
your reading audience - they aren't going to bother to read or respond to
you.

Last spring, I made a post about some generally accepted acronyms in the
genealogy community, as well as a few that are unique to us Azorean
researchers.
http://goo.gl/eRfyzy

Kip Sperry has written a book titled "Abbreviations & Acronyms: A Guide for
Family Historians." Your public library may have a copy. It is also sold
at many genealogy shows. His website is: www.kipsperry.com

If one does an Internet search of "genealogy acronymns" without quotes, a
list of sites come up. Here's one:
http://goo.gl/zR723q

And it says OP means Order of Preachers!

So lets just stick to the basic ones, leave out the texting/twittering
shorthand, and everyone will be less confused :)

It's on Eastern Ave, near Marconi in Carmichael. But these days, there isn't so much reason to go there to do research. That depends on location, of course.I still have some films from Chile there, I hope, and need to look at them again. You can have them call me, too.But if they don't have Portuguese ancestry, then maybe someone at the Family History library there can guide them. I think there might also be an online guide for other nationalities from the LDS website.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

[AZORES-Genealogy] Use of Acronyms

2013-07-24 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel

I am glad there was a clarification of what "OP" meant, I thought it was a
term we used in the Army. Usually a mooch would smoke OP's (other peoples)
cigarettes because he spent his pay on other worldly pleasures or an
Observation Post (a location to observe the enemy). Another person I talked
with thought it was Ocean Pacific (a brand of swimwear) I guess I mean to
say we need to be careful of some of the acronyms we use in posts as some
could mean something else to another or mean nothing to someone that is not
familiar with the acronym or abbreviation.

Many of us do not tweet or text and started off the old fashioned way
writing letters. So we expect things to be written carefully not in the form
of a Text or Tweet.

We should stick to only those acronyms and terms commonly related to
genealogy such as DOB or GEDCOM.

Eric, this is the line you and I spoke about before (DeRosa). The person

Luisa is my 2nd Great Grandmother. Your person and I share the same 2nd or

Both of these women (the Aunt and Niece) were married to the same man.

Did you find a connection to the OP of this thread by chance?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio da Rosa (Roza) Maciel (Marcial) baptized Nov 1860, S. Mattheus Magdalena, Pico

2013-07-24 Thread pico
Hello Anne,I have researched this same person, Antonio da Rosa Maciel from Sao Mateus. But the reason for my reply is in response to the chance this other Antone Rose from Pico is related. There is certainly a chance, but you must also know that "da Rosa" is a very common and popular name on Pico. I have a whole lot of "da Rosa" ancestors from Pico. And it's found in every village on Pico, which implies that it's a very old name on the island. Some of my Rosa ancestors have been documented back to the early 1500s. Others get lost when you reach the late 1600s due to missing older records.I just checked and found I have 129 men named Antonio da Rosa who were born on Pico in the 19th century. That is pretty common, I think. But if the one who might be your relative has left a paper trail, maybe I could help you find him and see if you are indeed related.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Repost ofr Anne Snyder aceweb.com)John, My grandfather's name is sometimes spelled Antonio da Rosa Maciel or Roza or Marcial.  He was baptised in Nov. 1860 at St. Mattheus Church, Magdalena, Pico, Diocese of Agra.   He became a citizen of the US in 1885.   There was also a whaling master, Antone Rose, (1841-1923) who was born in Pico.  I feel there must be a familial connection there but can't prove it.   I'm a life member of the American-Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society headquartered in New Bedford MA.    Anne (Snyder) --

2013-07-24 Thread pico
Unfortunately, as you well know, this sometimes happens. You two are probably the most helpful to new members and people might not realize how much time it takes to do all that research. They can take it for granted. These days, it's it not so uncommon for people to get their ancestry handed to them on a silver platter, with websites like Neps and the fact we all have so many distant relatives we find.Twenty years ago, such things were rare.I suppose there is always the chance it also helped others who will find your research valuable in the future.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: caton or caetano to ashland area, bay area from Flores, then Mass., Also Garcia, Alvernaz or Harvey.
