[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Is Lusaweb down?

2014-01-29 Thread João Ventura
Hi Freddy,

You can certainly run your own server There's a pretty good software
package for that: http://www.webtrees.net/. However, this is not a task I'd
recommend for anyone that's not an expert computer user (in Linux!!). An
alternative would be http://hosting.webtrees.net/ or
http://kiwitrees.net/services/hosting/, where they take care of running the
server and you take care of your trees (and users - since it's a web app
you can allow other family members to edit it - you can set their changes
to autoapprove, or subject to your approval). Or simply google for
'webtrees hosting'.

You can take a look at my own webtrees instance:
http://venturas.org/familytree/. I track mine and my wife's family tree in
there. All living individuals are not viewable by guest users, so the
starting points (mostly our deceased grandparents) are all under
'Favorites', you may have to scroll down a bit.

There's also a 'UK Royal Family' demo site here:
http://svn.webtrees.net/demo-stable/

Ask Joao C. Ventura about being a server for you own tree. He has his own
tree up on his own site. He reads daily and I'm sure he'll answer you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] genealogy program

2014-01-29 Thread blackice430
Hi, I've used TMG and just upgraded it from a 4 to a 8. I downloaded it. It is
confusing, and I have had to call a few times for help, but they are very nice
and they explain to you where you need help. I wish I had a book that I could
look at and take my time reading . That would be a lot easier for me. I don't
know how to use 80 % of the program. I wonder if they sell just the book. I
guess I'll have to call .

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] genealogy program

Geez, Rick, thanks for blowing my cover! LOL

TMG has the Silver Edition for $34 (download only) or $40 (CD Rom and
electronic Users Guide).  The Gold Edition is $60 (download only) or $70
(CD-ROM electronic Users Guide).  There is a chart that explains the
difference: http://goo.gl/IAjTsk

The current version is 8.0.  To go from 7.0 to 8.0, I paid $30.  And when they
come up with version 9.0, it will be something along those lines.  And it will
take them 2 or 3 years to come out with 9.0

I started with TMG 2.5 in the mid-90s.  Here it is, almost 20 years later and
TMG is up to version 8.0.  That's 6 version changes in 20 years, which averages
out to you shelling out more money every 3.3 years.

I like the filtering.  If I'm trying to figure out my Ponta Garca people, so I
can run the filter for everyone born in Ponta Garca.  Or married in Ponta
Garca. Or, or, or.  OR, it can be and, and, and.  This does take some time to
learn.  I also like customizing my Pick List.  This is the index of people.
Mine is set up to show the names, date of birth, date of death, father's name,
mother's name, and spouse's name.  So, if I'm looking at my 25 Manuel Silvas, I
can really see which one I want to work on.  There are other fields I can put
in too (or take out).

I pretty much like it how it comes out to the box.  The main screen shows my
subject person and all their details/events that happened in their life.  So if
it was displaying my immigrant ancestor, I would see the birth, immigration,
censuses, WW1 Draft, dispensation (I had to make a tag or event for that),
marriage(s), children, occupation, death, burial.  All of that, right there, in
my face.  Not hidden behind an icon.  I like that.  To the right of that
screen, I have 3 boxes: His children, his siblings, and his associates.  Some
people have their Flags open.  I toggle that one off and on.

I also have a couple of other layouts.  I have one for the projector at my
genealogy society.  That's no big deal, really.  I also have one called
Project Explorer where I have my Details window open and my Pick List open.
This is for me to clean my database.  Well, split it.  Should have split my
dad's Portuguese lines from his American lines years ago before merging it with
my mom's.  My mom has no Portuguese ancestry and is not related to him that
way.  Yeah, DNA proved that they are 6th cousins, but it's on my dad's one an
only German line way back in the 1740s.

What about software for Macs. I use Reunion but don't really like it that
much. It seems clunky to me and looks dated. I also bought FTM and MacTree
but haven't made the switch to one of these yet. I'm leaning towards
MacTree because navigation seems more intuitive. Any opinions from Mac
users?

 GGervais,

You'll get people telling you that the best program is the one they are
using. That's not going to help you. If you want certain things in a
program and can tell us, that may steer you towards one program or the
 other.

The 4 most popular in the PC market are:
Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy, RootsMagic, and The Master Genealogist.

 You already know about FTM.

Legacy has their Standard Edition (free) and their Deluxe (pay). So
download Legacy and play around with it: www.legacyfamilytree.com The
Deluxe has about 100 extra bells and whistles.

RootsMagic also has a free editions. They call it their Essentials.
Download that and play around with it too: www.rootsmagic.com/essentials
I don't know how many extra bells and whistles their paid version has.

The Master Genealogist (TMG) allows you to explore their full program for
30 days free (and then it locks you out). www.whollygenes.com Download
that and play around with it (but make sure you have close to a month to
peruse it. Trying to figure that program out 2 days before it expires is
like doing a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle in 1 hour).

I go over all 4 programs in a lecture in Salt Lake. Your local genealogy
society may have speakers. Request that they find a speaker that can
 lecture on genealogy software.

General overview of the 3 you haven't tried:
RootsMagic probably has the smallest learning curve. However, I've read
that some people find that they outgrow that program rather easily.
However, there's a RM User Group at one of my local genealogy societies,
and there are a couple of engineers in there. So it's whatever makes you
 happy.

Legacy has a pleasing user interface and a smaller learning curve. It can
be a fairly powerful program, too. It's Source Writer is absolutely
fantastic. No other program has a source feature like that. I'd have to
look up the cons for Legacy.

TMG is the most powerful program out there. They have a bit of a learning
curve, but they have tried to do things to make it easier (they have a
beginner's mode vs. an advanced mode). Their filtering feature is awesome
(you have to practice learning how to use it, though). And it's just about
completely customizable too. So you don't like the user interface out of
the box, you can change it.

When I bought a genealogy program in the mid-90s (I think this was back in
the Windows 3.1 days), I had 2 criteria. 1) It had to have a character
field long enough to take a city name the length of Ribeira das Tainhas or
Vila Franca do Campo. 2) It had to take diacritics. Those accented
letters. I wanted the names to be written properly. I wanted José de
Mello, not Jose de Mello. Only 1 program on the market could do that at
that time. Now, it's a moot point. They can all do that.

So if you have any specific concerns for a genealogy program, ask away.
Or try all 3 and then ask away. But make fake family and marry yourself to
yourself, mess up on dates and make someone born after they died, make
someone have a baby out of wedlock, etc. See how each program handles or
 display these things.

Also, depending on where you live, see if there is User Group in your area
(all the web sites above have a User Groups section where you can check to
see if there is one in your area). We get people dropping in to our group
wanting to see what the program is like before they purchase it.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Legitimate vs Natural

2014-01-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Tomas,

Maybe I should have typed the whole thing out instead of pulling it out of
context.

filho legitimate: baby born in wedlock
filho natural: baby's parents not married
filho illegitimate: one parent married to somewhere else, as John stated.

So the 3 adjectives are modifying the filho (or filha) and that is the
context we were discussing (title of the thread: Legitimate vs Natural.
Dave wanted to know why the father went missing on some of the records.)
Guess I should have kept them with the filho to avoid confusion.

Thank you very much I will try and get to Rookwood on weekend and let you
know what details I can find on the gravestone. The De Fraga ( or De

also used as part of one of his daughter's names) does seem significant for
the family. Will get back to you as soon as I know more. I very much

 - his naturalisation certificate - 9 august 1888 - lists him arriving in
Australia in 1861, and advising he is 34 years old, says he is a native of
 Flores, West Island, Azores
 - his first son was named Antoni George on his birth certificate (
3.11.1877 in Balmain Sydney) and the father is named as Antoni George

I do not have a birth date yet - but will shortly visit his grave in
Rookwood cemetery and that might help with a date of birth

 Jane,

I've worked with 2 other people who had ancestors from Flores, Azores
who immigrated to Australia or New Zealand. I'm familiar with the databases
available for Australian passenger and shipping lists.
I've checked a number of databases, but none showed a Triton arrival
for 1861. That particular year has a gap in the records of ships arriving
 at New South Wales.

The son's name with the de Frayer may give a clue, likely originally
being: de Fraga. Who did Anthony Lorenzo marry ?

Can you give some more information; his birthdate, marriage information
? With birth information he may be found in the parish baptism records of
Flores at the CCA - azores government archives site

  Hello,

Thanks a lot! I did not know of this. I'm up in the wee small hours of
the morning pouring through it. That's why I love this group, so much
information and helpful people, all pretty much working towards the same
goal. Even though I am relatively new to this, I feel like this is such an
exciting time to study family history. With so many records becoming more
accessible through digitization and groups like this that connect people
from all over the world, working on one big family history project.

I remember my mom working on genealogy back in the early 90's and she would
have to wait months and months to receive a document, or a letter telling
her no record was found. Great times! You all have a good day.

GGervais,

You'll get people telling you that the best program is the one they are using.
That's not going to help you.  If you want certain things in a program and can
tell us, that may steer you towards one program or the other.

The 4 most popular in the PC market are:
Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy, RootsMagic, and The Master Genealogist.

You already know about FTM.

Legacy has their Standard Edition (free) and their Deluxe (pay).  So download
Legacy and play around with it: www.legacyfamilytree.com   The Deluxe has about
100 extra bells and whistles.

RootsMagic also has a free editions.  They call it their Essentials.  Download
that and play around with it too: www.rootsmagic.com/essentials   I don't know
how many extra bells and whistles their paid version has.

The Master Genealogist (TMG) allows you to explore their full program for 30
days free (and then it locks you out). www.whollygenes.com   Download that and
play around with it (but make sure you have close to a month to peruse it.
Trying to figure that program out 2 days before it expires is like doing a 5000
piece jigsaw puzzle in 1 hour).

I go over all 4 programs in a lecture in Salt Lake.  Your local genealogy
society may have speakers.  Request that they find a speaker that can lecture
on genealogy software.

General overview of the 3 you haven't tried:
RootsMagic probably has the smallest learning curve.  However, I've read that
some people find that they outgrow that program rather easily.  However,
there's a RM User Group at one of my local genealogy societies, and there are a
couple of engineers in there.  So it's whatever makes you happy.

Legacy has a pleasing user interface and a smaller learning curve.  It can be a
fairly powerful program, too.  It's Source Writer is absolutely fantastic.  No
other program has a source feature like that.  I'd have to look up the cons for
Legacy.

TMG is the most powerful program out there.  They have a bit of a learning
curve, but they have tried to do things to make it easier (they have a
beginner's mode vs. an advanced mode).  Their filtering feature is awesome (you
have to practice learning how to use it, though).  And it's just about
completely customizable too.  So you don't like the user interface out of the
box, you can change it.

When I bought a genealogy program in the mid-90s (I think this was back in the
Windows 3.1 days), I had 2 criteria.  1) It had to have a character field long
enough to take a city name the length of Ribeira das Tainhas or Vila Franca do
Campo.  2) It had to take diacritics.  Those accented letters. I wanted the
names to be written properly.  I wanted José de Mello, not Jose de Mello.  Only
1 program on the market could do that at that time.  Now, it's a moot point.
They can all do that.

So if you have any specific concerns for a genealogy program, ask away.  Or try
all 3 and then ask away.  But make fake family and marry yourself to yourself,
mess up on dates and make someone born after they died, make someone have a
baby out of wedlock, etc.  See how each program handles or display these
things.

Also, depending on where you live, see if there is User Group in your area (all
the web sites above have a User Groups section where you can check to see if
there is one in your area).  We get people dropping in to our group wanting to
see what the program is like before they purchase it.

When I bought a genealogy program in the mid-90s (I think this was back
in the Windows 3.1 days), I had 2 criteria.

Also, depending on where you live, see if there is User Group in your
area (all the web sites above have a User Groups section where you can
check to see if there is one in your area). We get people dropping in to
our group wanting to see what the program is like before they purchase it.

I am a devoted Mac user, but as someone else stated, I haven't really found a
Mac genealogy program that I'm happy with. I have tried them all. Almost all of
the following have a free demo version, always with limitations, but it's a
great way to try out software before you decide which one meets your needs.
Here are the top 5:

Reunion, http://www.leisterpro.com/index.php, has always been the most popular
for Macs. I used it from version 4 thru the current version, but it's sadly
lacking in many areas and I really don't like the new interface. That, of
course, is just my opinion, for what that's worth.

Family Tree Maker 3, https://www.familytreemaker.com/Products/Mac, is another
popular Mac program but I don't think it offers a demo version. It is
affiliated with Ancestry.com.

Mac FamilyTree, http://www.syniumsoftware.com/macfamilytree/, is a program that
offers a demo version so you can try it out. I believe it is fully functional
but doesn't allow you to save or print.

Heredis 2014 offers a demo version
http://www.heredis.com/en/heredis-2014-for-mac/ There is no time limit on this
free demo but you are limited to 50 people.

iFamily for Leopard, http://ifamilyforleopard.com. This also has a demo version.

You can read about and compare features of all these programs and more here:
Mac Genealogy Reviews:
http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-genealogy-software/index.html

Personally, I run Parallels on my Mac so that I have a complete Windows 7
computer within my Mac. So, with that, I use Legacy 8 and love it! It fulfills
all my needs and has a pleasant, easy to use interface. With some type of
virtualization software such as Parallels, VM Fusion, and others, you can use
any Windows program you want. I hated to go over to the dark side but I never
was happy with Mac genealogy offerings.

Remember, these are just my opinions . different folks have different needs
and expectations. With the exception of FTM, all of the above programs have
demo modes so that you can try before you buy. You can't ask for more than that!

Good luck,

  Hello,

Thanks a lot! I did not know of this. I'm up in the wee small hours of the
morning pouring through it. That's why I love this group, so much information
and helpful people, all pretty much working towards the same goal. Even though
I am relatively new to this, I feel like this is such an exciting time to study
family history. With so many records becoming more accessible through
digitization and groups like this that connect people from all over the world,
working on one big family history project.

I remember my mom working on genealogy back in the early 90's and she would
have to wait months and months to receive a document, or a letter telling her
no record was found. Great times! You all have a good day.

I have been playing with Heredis all afternoon (a pretty complete trial
program) and I am pretty impressed. The learning curve was minimal and it
thinks like I do. It gives you a list of all your duplicates and shows you
both entries with a merged entry in the middle. You can then work with the
entry that will be merged and pick and choose what you want to keep. You
then hit something like merge entry and bam!, the duplicates are gone and
all that is left is the merged entry. Not sure what happens if you decided
you made a mistake...
It also does a good job on relationships (maybe more than you care to
know).
Check it out. It works for Mac and PC.

Ah! This makes sense. I was reading your previous clarification as using
natural by itself, similarly to how it's used on other paperwork. Coupled
with filho the meaning is clear and quite different from the use on the

And, may I say, this little slip up is completely insignificant in the

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Miguel people in Sao Jorge!

2014-01-29 Thread Kawika322
I have an instance in my family line that is related to what you are
talking about. My ggg grandfather Antonio Silveira da Costa (born 1838,
Arrifes, Sao Miguel) moved with his parents Joao da Costa and Anna Maria
and grandmother Magdalena Rosa from Arrifes, Sao Miguel to Ribeira Seca,
Sao Jorge somewhere between 1842 and 1864. In 1865 he married Rosa Silveira
in Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge. Based on an info from a cousin, Joao da Costa
(father of Antonio) was an engineer at the time they were building the road
that connected the villages of Topo and Velas. This may have been why the
whole family moved all the way to Sao Jorge. I only found out/realized that
the whole family had moved, because earlier on I had been trying to find
the death records for Joao da Costa, Anna Maria and Magdalena Rosa in the
obitos in Sao Miguel and had come up with nothing, and later on I was
browsing through the Obitos in Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge and came upon one of
their death records. I search more and found the rest which was a great
find.

I wonder what other reasons may have prompted the moved to Sao Jorge?
Anyways, I thought it was an interesting story that connects with the
posting topic.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Marriage Record - Andre de Sousa Isabel Cabral - 1667 in Santa Luzia, Feteiras, Sao Miguel

2014-01-29 Thread Kawika322
I have a marriage record that is hard to read and was looking for some
fresh eyes to take a look at it and see if they can make out the parents
names of the bridge and groom. The writing is kind of hard to read, names
are abbreviated, and the record curves into the spine of the book so the
names get harder to make out. I have decent idea of the names, but am not
quite sure. The record is from 9 Feb 1667 in Santa Luzia, Feteiras, Sao
Miguel. I think the parents of Antonio are Joao? Frz? and Maria ?Aguiar?
and parents of Isabel are Pedro? Cabral and Maria Alvarez? I could be way
off, haha.

Any input would be helpful.

Here is the link.

Record is on the top left.
