Rick,

Yes - thank you! I must have passed by this one because I had not seen his
name as Antonio Jacinto Amaral before, just Antonio de Amaral. It looks
like the parents are a match from what I have, but hard to read the wife's
parents names. I will study it further. Thanks again!!!

[AZORES-Genealogy] A baptism sub conditione...

2015-03-29 Thread Maria Lima
On left side the 3 one down- not sure if the name of the child is is
Francisco(?)

there's something that happened why the priest wrote he baptized sub
conditione ... Then after the names of the parents the priest says something
about where the menino or the child is from. It's an unusual record. Can
someone tell me did the child die? This record is legible; just my Portuguese
is limited.

Hi Pat,
The church is Nossa Senhora do Rosario...the record reads- natural de Vila Novo

So, you had the right place all along.

and like you stated, this particular record is from Santa Catarina.

Now the parents. I read her parents as Manuel Pereira and Catarina Oliveira.
I think the word after Manuel Pereira is defunto? maybe.

Let's see if anyone else chimes in.

Hi Maria,

What I see is, yes Barbara, with a big B and small a...Ba. The a is slightly
raised. The fathers name I'm not sure, to me looks like Glo da Costa : Gonçalo.
The mothers name is Anna Carvalho. After Carvalho it says naturaes de
freguesia...etc.

I hope that helps..

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help translating two words please (Coelho Soares Figueiredo lines)

2015-03-29 Thread aportugee via Azores Genealogy
Hi everyone; I need help translating two words in this one. I think Cheri
gave me the meaning a couple of years ago but; I haven’t come across it since
and I haven’t been able to find the meaning in my notes. You can find the
document here:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SAOPEDRO-B-1828-1845/SMA-VP-SAOPEDRO-B-1828-1845_item1/P92.html

It is the baptism of Jacinta on the top right. The words I can’t figure out
are the word after the father’s name and the two words after the paternal
grandfather’s name. I suspect it has something to do with being a ‘sea man’
but; I could be completely off base with that idea. Any help is much
appreciated. Below is what I have translated, if anyone would like to make
corrections on my translation, any and all are much appreciated. Thank you
all, Sam in Maz

Jacinta, legitimate daughter of Jose Manoel Coelho, native of this
parochial church of the Apostle of Saint Peter, place of Flor da Rosalta,
island of Santa Maria and of his wife, Maria Jacinta de Figueiredo, native of
the parochial of Santa Barbara of this same island. Paternal grandson of Manoel
Jose Coelho, ?, and of his wife, Maria Francisca. Maternal of Joao
Soares de Figueiredo and his wife, Francisca Jacinta, natives of this same
parochial of Santa Barbara. Born on the 9th day of March 1841 , was baptized on
the 2? of the same month and year, as the granddaughter said above, residents
of the place of Feterias

The writing seems clear as siareiro which I could not find in my
dictionary, but I did see the word on a google search, mostly on Spanish
language links. My wife suggested in my be an alternate spelling of
seareiro which is a harvester. The other word after the paternal
grandfather is tambem (also).

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Strange Word after the father's name

2015-03-29 Thread Aaron Pereira
Hello,

Since we're on the subjecf of Donino/a, I decided to do a bit of sleuthing. I
found Donino/a as a surname and given name in Italian records. Donina as a
given name in Braziian Portuguese records. I found quite a few Donina's from
Brazilian Portuguese. Which makes me wonder why we don't see the name more
often in Azorean, Madeiran, or mainland records. Or, maybe others have seen it
more often. It's worth noting that I did not find a single Donino as a given
name in Brazilian Portuguese parish records.
I don't know how much credence can be lent to the website I was on, but Donina
(latin) was listed as a variation of Dorothy, or vice versa.

Here is a Brazilian Portuguese baptism record of Donina from Rio Grande do
Sul...very bottom left side of page, record #15

http://goo.gl/rVNEN6

here is another Donina, record is top left, #991, from Paraiba, Brazil.

http://goo.gl/gYUPDm

Okay, it's been a very interesting topic, but I burned my alloted time for the
day. I hope some other listers can post on this subject, and offer their
expertise.

[AZORES-Genealogy] help reading margin notes

2015-03-29 Thread familyfrancisphotos
I am having fun going through the baptismal records, and have started
looking for marriage records. I am looking for the parents of Antonio do
Amaral - his baptism at Matriz, Ribeira Grande - left side

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1848-1849/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1848-1849_item1/P197.html

I think it might say something in the margin about parent's marriage -
maybe the parish of

Conceição, Ribeira Grande - 1837

but I looked through these records for Conceição and there is no marriage
record for the parents - which I believe are Antonio de Amaral from Achada
and Margerida Izabel.from Matriz, Ribeira Grande.

I also looked through surrounding dates in Achada and Matriz.

Thanks
Amy Francis

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help reading margin notes

2015-03-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Amy F,

Margin notes will refer to that person and the events in that person's
life. So side margin notes may contain information on his marriage, when
his marriage was dissolved (usually by the death of a spouse), or his death.

This side margin says he died in the Conceicao parish of R.Grande on 23 May
1937. Then it cross references the death book of 1937.

To find Antonio's parents marriage, I'd go looking for Antonio's older
siblings. Many times, the records will say recibidos meaning that's the
church that parents were married. I don't see that in this record. Maybe
it will say in one of his siblings. And in the process, you'll get better
and better at reading the handwriting/paleography.
