Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with 1733 marriage record of Manoel Tavares and Felipa do Santiago from Sao Roque

2015-08-21 Thread JR
It appears, as Denise stated, the priest simply omitted, by mistake I
assume, the name of the father. So he was not named. The record says, com
Phelipa de Samtiago e de sua May (may with accent above y, looks like
mother but is error or poorly written) sic mulher Joana da Costa todos
moradores nesta fraguesia onde contrahentes foram baptizados ... If you
look further ahead on other records, you will see a similar abbreviation
for mulher= May with accent above y, whenever the priest appears to be
running out of space.

When Phelipa is born, it appears the parents are not married, as Antonio
Alvares is viuvo, and Joana da Costa, the mother is also not married but
they are dispensar para cazar ( intending to marry as near as I can
figure)- She was born Oct 20- 1711, bap- Oct 26- 1711, Pad- Jacome da Ruda
soldado moradore mesma fraguesia...

No parents are listed for either Antonio Alvares or Joana da Costa. Maybe
they never married, but you may as well look for a marriage after the the
child was born.

Looking at it again, I think that Denise is probably correct. It might be
Joze, but it is probably Sua -- the S/J is different, but the ua is
formed exactly as for the groom's father/mother.

 the second recors says,

 Good afternoon Ms. MaryAnn Santos,

I hope this e-mail finds you well.

On 29 July an alteration to the Portuguese Nationality Act was approved
in order to consider the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens Portuguese by
origin. In sum, under the newly enacted law, obtaining citizenship depends
on three requirements: (i) knowledge of the Portuguese language; (ii)
regular visits to Portugal; and (iii) the applicant cannot have been found
guilty of a crime with a prison sentence over 3 years.

I attach hereto our Legal News Alert on the new law.

If you feel you meet these requirements, kindly complete the assessment
 form attached hereto.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

 Best Regards,

 Lisette

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Achada Casamentos

2015-08-21 Thread Paul
Rick,

I can not say yes or no at this time. I found her casamentos to my 6th
great grandfather Bento Pacheco Rapozo on 11 Jan 1731 in Maia. Here's the
link for the marriage:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742_item1/P175.html

left page. It lists Izabel as a widow of Antonio Medeiros de Mello who died
on 16 Nov 1730 in Maia. The baptism records for Bento's Izabel's children
list her being from Achada Grande. So I have been looking at the casamentos
from November 1730 going backwards trying to find her marriage to Antonio
and stopping at any record with an Izabel de Resendes. All this in the hope
of finding her baptism record.

Hi Sean,

I have done a lot of research in Rabo de Peixe and I think that all those
Martins de Gouveia are connected. As far as I know they all descend from
Manuel Martins Mascarenhas, from Rabo de Peixe born around 1610, and Maria
de Gouveia, from Matriz da Ribeira Grande born on 1 sep 1613.

Do you have the names of the parents for your Francisco Martins de Gouveia?

 Rick,

I can not say yes or no at this time. I found her casamentos to my 6th
great grandfather Bento Pacheco Rapozo on 11 Jan 1731 in Maia. Here's the
 link for the marriage:
 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742_item1/P175.html

left page. It lists Izabel as a widow of Antonio Medeiros de Mello who died
on 16 Nov 1730 in Maia. The baptism records for Bento's Izabel's children
list her being from Achada Grande. So I have been looking at the casamentos
from November 1730 going backwards trying to find her marriage to Antonio
and stopping at any record with an Izabel de Resendes. All this in the hope
 of finding her baptism record.

 Rick,

I can not say yes or no at this time. I found her casamentos to my 6th
great grandfather Bento Pacheco Rapozo on 11 Jan 1731 in Maia. Here's the
 link for the marriage:
 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742/SMG-RG-MAIA-C-1705-1742_item1/P175.html

left page. It lists Izabel as a widow of Antonio Medeiros de Mello who died
on 16 Nov 1730 in Maia. The baptism records for Bento's Izabel's children
list her being from Achada Grande. So I have been looking at the casamentos
from November 1730 going backwards trying to find her marriage to Antonio
and stopping at any record with an Izabel de Resendes. All this in the hope
 of finding her baptism record.

As to Manuel Martins de Gouveia and Maria da Luz, I have researched all

Do you have the names of the parents for your Francisco Martins de Gouveia?

5000 in legal fees to get her citizenship here. There are always stories of
easy US citizenship but it actually ranks as one of the more difficult ones to
get if you have minimal legal standing for it. Portugal is considered somewhat
easier, just not the easiest. If you want citizenship just to have a second
passport then there are other places to go. If you want to be part of Portugal
and its people then that is possible…But, you must prove your interest in the
country. You can do this by living there for 5 years and being part of their
economy, by ancestry to the gparent level, by ancestry to the ggparent level
with language ability, by investing in the country 350,000 euro. It is not
impossible and it is not difficult by most developed nation standards. One must
decide the route, the reason, and the qualifications necessary and then be
about the business of applying. I am surprised at the interesting observations

isn’t done the way it is in the USA it isn’t right or easy or modern. The
correct observation is that it is different and works for Portugal, that is all
that matters in this case.I have no interest in stirring up a hot debate; my
interest is in encouraging those that want to try for citizenship to do so and
to do it by the Portuguese parameters, after all Portugal is the country they

Good afternoon Ms. MaryAnn Santos,
I hope this e-mail finds you well.
On 29 July an alteration to the Portuguese Nationality Act was approved in
order to consider the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens Portuguese by
origin. In sum, under the newly enacted law, obtaining citizenship depends on
three requirements: (i) knowledge of the Portuguese language; (ii) regular

crime with a prison sentence over 3 years.
I attach hereto our Legal News Alert on the new law.

[AZORES-Genealogy] General Question about records

2015-08-21 Thread Sean Andrade
Hi,

As I search through baptism records I came across people with only first
names. If you look at the link on the bottom left and bottom right it looks
like records for two different people named Ignacia:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-CAPELO-B-1805-1818/FAL-HT-CAPELO-B-1805-1818_item1/P5.html

My question is, if you are looking for someone with a common name and you
don't know their parents or their dates of birth, death or marriage and the
records aren't listing their second name or surnames, is there a way to
dicier more information about who the person is? So using these two
Ignacia's as an example, is there a line that maybe lists their second name?

Hope this question wasn't two confusing.

Sean

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Question about records

2015-08-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Sean,

That's the way it works.a baby is baptized by first name ONLY. I think
in my 23 years so of research, I've seen only 1 baby with two given names.
It was someone who posted it recently on this list.

Start with what you know and work back. That way you will always have the
parents' names.

My ancestor was Manuel de Mello. Pretty common. Once I had his parents'
names, I went to his freguesia and started searching in 1889 working my way
back, stopping at every Manuel until I found mine in 1887 (he had multiple
birth dates). Then I collected ALL his siblings. I wanted to learn how to
read the writing AND to get used to the format of that time period. Also,
I pick up additional names or alcunhas of the parents (not this line, but
another line they went from Mello to Mello Barboza).

 Hi,

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-CAPELO-B-1805-1818/FAL-HT-CAPELO-B-1805-1818_item1/P5.html

Mary 29, 1766, RdP.

According to the marriage record (link below) she was the daughter of

I have been unable to find the marriage of her parents.

Was wondering if anyone while searching in Rabo de Peixe has run across
them.

Any help - point in the right direction, etc. greatly appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fwd: Interested in Portuguese citizenship

2015-08-21 Thread kpsreading
I don’t know how much of an overkill it might be…I have a close friend who
married a Russian woman. She is a concert violinist and speaks English at a B2
level with a reasonable knowledge of US history. It took her 5 years and over
5000 in legal fees to get her citizenship here.

I am surprised at the interesting observations made by my US based relatives.
There seems to be an expectation that if it isn’t done the way it is in the USA
it isn’t right or easy or modern. The correct observation is that it is
different and works for Portugal, that is all that matters in this case.

I have no interest in stirring up a hot debate; my interest is in encouraging
those that want to try for citizenship to do so and to do it by the Portuguese
parameters, after all Portugal is the country they are applying to. We
Americans always criticize immigrants that don’t want to become American they
just want the citizenship but not the culture or ideas…well?

Good afternoon Ms. MaryAnn Santos,

I hope this e-mail finds you well.

On 29 July an alteration to the Portuguese Nationality Act was approved in
order to consider the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens Portuguese by
origin. In sum, under the newly enacted law, obtaining citizenship depends on
three requirements: (i) knowledge of the Portuguese language; (ii) regular
visits to Portugal; and (iii) the applicant cannot have been found guilty of a
crime with a prison sentence over 3 years.

I attach hereto our Legal News Alert on the new law.

If you feel you meet these requirements, kindly complete the assessment form
