Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jewish cemetery and records in Cedros, Santa Cruz das Flores.

2016-02-17 Thread Cheri Mello
In answering Debbie's question about Jewish records for Cedros on Flores,
there are none or none were filmed. The Civil Registry was used by
non-Catholics and the GSU filmed what existed in the archives when they
were there in the 1980s. I checked the FHLC for Cedros on Flores and didn't
find any Civil Registry records listed: https://goo.gl/FdzE9M

I know after someone converted, they would appear in the records as a "new
Christian."

Depending on how far back this ancestor is, DNA might be her only answer.
Many records on Flores don't go back that far.

(For those new to genealogy: GSU = Genealogy Society of Utah, the old name
of Family Search; FHLC = Family History Library Catalog. No, I did not make
up these acronyms, they are what is used by the genealogy community).

Anna Francesca is the paternal grandmother.

Side note is that she needed proof of her birth or baptism, so on that
date, a certificate was made for her. She probably requested it for her
marriage. The certificate notes never say why, they just state a
certificate was issued.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Doutor Gaspar Frutuoso--translation

2016-02-17 Thread Sandra Perez
Anybody familiar with: the English translation of Doutor Gaspar Frutuoso *Livro
Quarto Das Saudades Da Terra* Vol I by Edna Phillips Kern? I purchased
this volume many years ago and put it away--it was too early for my
research at the time. Just this week, with JR's help and RR (not familiar
with RR), I was able to find my 14th g-grandparents, Jorge Velho and Africa
Anes, in Vol I.

I was stunned after I checked the index and went to the correct page
entitled: Chapter 8 Jorge Velho, Old settler of Island of Sao Miguel and
the Jorge Descendants. There are other chapters on names of early settlers
and an index if someone would like me to check for them. Again, speicial
thanks to JR.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jewish cemetery and records in Cedros, Santa Cruz das Flores.

2016-02-17 Thread Nelia DiBiase
George,

I've been doing some research and came across information on a Portuguese
synagogue in the Bahamas I believe. Named after Luis de Torres. Luis was
interpreter to Christopher Columbus in the USA. He was an integral part of
the communication process between Columbus (Colombe) and the native
Americans.
Apparently he was a Sephardic Jew... His name was Yosef Ben Levi HaIvri but
changed it to Luis de Torres in Portugal when he was forced to convert to
Catholicism. I believe he was a moor and died in the late 1400's.

I don't see anything about a dispensation for consanguinity. I think his
travels were mentioned because that was the justification for his dispensation
for not proving satisfaction of Lenten obligations.

You could try the Angra and/or Horta passaporte logs; but if he was a ship
captain, passaportes may not apply.

I've seen under 25 marrying without permission being stated in the record
before. I assumed the parents' presence implied permission. The one time I
saw permission stated was when the maternal grandmother gave permission because
both parents were deceased or absent (this was all stated in the record as I
recall).
