Yes, Tish, they need to have another 'choice' that says 'no surname on
women' as Cheri suggested. They won't, I'm sure, so we will have to go in
and change them ourselves if we want to have out tree in these other
websites.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] MyHeritage

2016-03-19 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Yes, Margaret, it just makes me very upset with these different programs,
they assume that everyone is just like us in the USA!! We went over this
with Personal Ancestry File (PAF) and they finally addressed the issue in
LegacyFamily Tree. They should accept what we enter and not 'generalize'
and change things as they see fit but I don't believe that is going to
happen! They just went ahead a tacked on the husbands surname as a given,
it is *not* the way I entered it into their program!

I believe this is the marriage of (starts bottom left) Nicolau and
Emmerencianna on 4 Sep 1731, less than a year after Luzia's baptism (19 Dec
1730) in which Nicolau and Maria were said to be betrothed (I believe). I
does say he is the widower of Maria de Souza so it appears they did marry
(right page line 5).

Glancing through the obits and casamentos between these dates however I was
unable to find Maria's obit or her marriage to Nicolau,

de ele (of him) usually contracted as "dele".

It says "...Manuel Joaquim da Silva, madrinha a mulher de ele Philomena..."
This would mean the same as Manuel e a sua mulher..., just saying "wife of
him" instead of "his wife".

I just don't understand why Manuel's wife's name changed from Margarida to
Philomena between the two parts of the record. It doesn't say Margarida,
ja defuncta, so I would expect that he has the same wife in both paragraphs.

My wife helped me out with the word in the 1865 Topo record that I had
trouble with. It is então and it was saying that Roza Victorina (the
maternal grandmother) was single at the time of her daughter's birth (but
presumably married sometime after that)

[AZORES-Genealogy] MyHeritage

2016-03-19 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Hi all,

Just thought I would let the list know about how MyHeritage website lists
their names in genealogy trees. I was told by a teacher of genealogy to
enter my tree in all of the sites that have this available: MyHeritage,
PastTimes, FamilySearch and Ancestry as they all have different search
parameters and data bases to search (and they all have free access except
Ancestry). I decided to start putting my tree into MyHeritage. Now, it's
okay *except* that they list the females by their married name with the
maiden name in parenthesis. This is bad for the Azores because most, as we
know, do use a married name! This is okay in the US but not okay with our
Portuguese names nor my Italian side! I've emailed them but I don't believe
that it will make any difference, just wanted you to know this quirk in
case you are planning on entering some of your names into these 'other'
genealogy sites!

Josh, just looking quickly thru the passporte apps I found an Agustino
Cordeiro Miranda age 42 & wife Umbelina 38 with children. Here is the link:
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1906-1907/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1906-1907_item1/P105.html
He is #396 and the family follows. Passporte dated 26 June 1907. You can
start there and work backwards if this isn't yours.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Cordeiro Miranda and Viveiros immigrated to Massachusetts

2016-03-19 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Josh, you can also check the passporte applications for Ponta Delgada, Sao
Miguel for the exit from the Azores. You have the date 9 July 1907? so you
should be able to find the application before that. Go to Tombo.pt, click
on Azores and when it comes up you will have the Passporte listed by place
and date. I believe the Ponta Delgada is first.

Josh, the Boston ship records are on Ancestry.com. Go to your local Family
History Center or maybe even your local public library to access this ship
manifest. It will list all of the ten children, where they came from and as

Helen, you also have a *great* Genealogy Society in Los Banos. There are
many of the members who are researching the Azores and can help you with
your research. I don't have the exact address but I know that Betty
Bettencourt has the Society's library at her house. Just google Los Banos
Genealogy Society and something should show up about them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Cordeiro Miranda and Viveiros immigrated to Massachusetts

2016-03-19 Thread trailrunner6288
Thank you for re-posting, Cheri.

And thank you Judi for the information on the immigration of the Cordeiro
Mirandas.

My great grandfather, Manuel Cordeiro b 1985 Bretanha is one of the sons of
Agostinho Cordeiro Miranda and Maria Julia Vivieros.

I am still tracking down the rest of his siblings. Were they named on the
passenger manifest?

I just wanted to tell everyone that I'm so thankful for this group and all
that I've learned. I am enjoying working on azorean genealogy of those I

feel somewhat relieved to know that y'all have my back and are ready and

Thanks again!

Yes, Margaret, it just makes me very upset with these different programs,
they assume that everyone is just like us in the USA!! We went over this

LegacyFamily Tree. They should accept what we enter and not 'generalize' and
change things as they see fit but I don't believe that is going to happen!
They just went ahead a tacked on the husbands surname as a given, it is
not the way I entered it into their program!

Rosemarie,

I don't think it should be generalized like that. No, not all Azorean
women assumed their husband's name. That didnt' happen until some time after
the 1900'stime lines should be paid careful attention to.

Women did not take on their husbands surname's on until recent
times...around or after the 1900's. My own Grandmothers did not take on my
Grandfather's surname on both sides. Slowly after that they were either given
to
carry on with their parents name or given an heavenly one. When the
Franciscan's friars of the 3rd order tookover the islands they began to make
women
invisible by instilling in them that to be be holy they had too give
themselves up and in order to do this they give up their individuality and
name
rights and become Mary and become Mary of the Angels etc. Most of the rich
and
spunky women were able and smart enough to carry on with their family
names for they brought huge dowries along with them and they alone decided who
amongst them was to inherit it.

These programs use the terminology of "nee" born or maiden name which is
correct for those who may have adopted their husbands name.

Something very important to note also was that even in the 1950's and
after that a woman who wanted to assume their husband's surname after marriage
had to request it, register it and pay for it so to legalize it. And,
this is noted in every record of birth.

Cheers,

Now, it's okay except
that they list the females by their married name with the maiden name in
parenthesis. This is bad for the Azores because most, as we know, do use a
married name! This is okay in the US but not okay with our Portuguese names
nor my Italian side! I've emailed them but I don't believe that it will
make any difference, just wanted you to know this quirk in case you are
planning on entering some of your names into these 'other' genealogy sites!

Sorry, after checking the dates I realized they are not the same
couple...please ignore the connection noted on previous email.
Never-the-less they may have gotten married elsewhere or one of them is
from a different place.

Cheers,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: MyHeritage

2016-03-19 Thread EResendes
Just to clarify. I use MyHeritage and you can change your preference to
view your tree however you like. You can choose 4 options:

Married Name (Maiden Name)
Maiden Name (Married Name)
Married Name
Maiden Name

This is unders Settings then choose Genealogy at the top.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage in Maia Sao Miguel 1769

2016-03-19 Thread Herb and Judi Silva
Good morning, from Richmond VA My ancestors, Antonio Pacheco Sousa de Medeiros married Antonia de Pimentel on 11 Jan 1769 in Maia, Sao Miguel.  His parents were Manuel Pacheco and Barbara Macedo.  Barbara Macedo was from Fenais da Ajuda. Does anyone have these families? Its been a dead end for many years, because the records for Fenais da Ajuda after this period exist in other parishes. thank you in advance and have a great weekendHerb

You can't (to my knowledge).

Because we are all on different computers of different ages, it's best to avoid
bolding, underlining, etc. And colors and graphics. They may not display
correctly on the other end (Eliseu's graphic always comes out as the letter "J"
on my end. I don't know what graphic he tries to put there, but it doesn't
display in Windows 8 or in Gmail, I don't know which). You can still use the
symbols for smileys, as I believe those come through :)

I use caps if I need something bolded. I use the asterisk if I need something
italicized. Example: I *think* he said he wanted to go NOW.

Hope that helps.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] MyHeritage

2016-03-19 Thread Margaret Vicente
Rosemarie,

I don't think it should be generalized like that. No, not all Azorean
women assumed their husband's name. That didnt' happen until some time
after the 1900'stime lines should be paid careful attention to.

Women did not take on their husbands surname's on until recent
times...around or after the 1900's. My own Grandmothers did not take on my
Grandfather's surname on both sides. Slowly after that they were either
given to carry on with their parents name or given an heavenly one. When
the Franciscan's friars of the 3rd order tookover the islands they began to
make women invisible by instilling in them that to be be holy they had too
give themselves up and in order to do this they give up their individuality
and name rights and become Mary and become Mary of the Angels etc. Most of
the rich and spunky women were able and smart enough to carry on with their
family names for they brought huge dowries along with them and they alone
decided who amongst them was to inherit it.

These programs use the terminology of "nee" born or maiden name which is
correct for those who may have adopted their husbands name.

Something very important to note also was that even in the 1950's and after
that a woman who wanted to assume their husband's surname after marriage
had to request it, register it and pay for it so to legalize it. And,
this is noted in every record of birth.

Cheers,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Alexander Souza, São Jorge, 1883

2016-03-19 Thread 'Marcio' via Azores Genealogy
Eric

Based on my experience I would say The combination de Sousa Borba is more
common in Calheta followed by Topo.
Since you researched Calheta I went to Topo records and found one Alexandre,
born in August 1882. He was son of Manuel Jose da Cunha, shoemaker and Rosa
Delfina, seamstress. Paternal grandson of Antonia de Sao Jose and maternal
grandson of Antonio de Sousa de Borba and Ana Delfina. The godfather was a
Alexandre de Sousa de Borba (most likely a maternal oncle/cousin)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding Family Name Usage

2016-03-19 Thread Cheri Mello
Kim W,

It's the same name.

The name Antonio, when pronounced, can have that final "o" sound dropped,
so it will sound more like "Antone." The name Ignacio, when pronounced,
can also have that final "o" sound dropped, so it will sound more like
"Igg-nauce" (nauce rhymes with sauce). Somehow, that winds up as Enos. So
depending on where your ancestor lived, whom he was talking to, what his
accent was like, how familiar the other person was with the Portuguese
accent, and who was filling out the form, you'll get different spellings
for the same name. You get to look for ALL those names. Just think of it as
making you a better researcher.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name help please. Ribeiras, Pico

2016-03-19 Thread nancy jean baptiste
Greetings,

I may have located the baptism record for my 3x grandmother in Pico. I'm
searching for Maria Silveira, born in Ribeiras around 1782 based on her obit.
This one works and I'm wondering if someone could tell me the name of the
padrinho's, Manuel Sylveira's, parentsis it Anselmo? Ancleto? and Maria
Sylveira?

CCA

Ribeiras, Pico

Baptisms

1779-1799

pg. 0022

Bottom right:Maria

Thank you for any insight,

Nancy Jean

[AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding Family Name Usage

2016-03-19 Thread Kim White
Hi Folks,
In the Will & Probate records of my 2x Great Grandfather his name is given
with 2 other known names. The names are listed as such: Antonio Ignacio
Pereira a.k.a. Antone Enos Pereira a.k.a. Ignacio Pereira. Are there
naming practices or usages that may help explain why a person would have
used 3 different iterations of a name? Understanding this a bit more may
help me when looking for other records. Thank you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge baptism records for Rita and Rosa

2016-03-19 Thread Marilyn Thompson
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1860-1869/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1860-1869_item1/P125.html

Rita record #1 I am trying to decide if she is the mother of Rosa #14 in
the following link

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-SANTOANTAO-B-1890-1899/SJR-CH-SANTOANTAO-B-1890-1899_item1/P108.html

The only thing I can go by are the parents of Rita in both records

father in #1 - Manuel Joaquim da Silveria and Margarida Rosa
grandparents in #14 - Manuel Joaquim da Silva and Margarida Rosa Victorina

I can see the variation in Manuel surname and the addition of Victorina to
Margarida's name.

I need someone else to give me their opinion. Is Rita the same person in
both records?

Thank you
