The ages are not listed on the marriage of Manuel & Maria.

Absent - if he was a sailor, he may be away. If he was a soldier, he may be
away or absent. Things like that.

Clarification: If two families did not like each other yet their kids went
off somewhere and she got pregnant, she may list the father as a pai
incognito. That's what I was referring to.

Linda,

Since both Manuel's mother and Maria do Rosario's parents match the 
baptismal records of their son Francisco, I'm so sure this is them. Can you 
think of a reason why they would list Manuel's father as "Pai Incognito" 
when he knows who it is? Google translate lists asuente as "absent" like 
you say. Would there be a reason they would shift from "absent" to 
"unknown?" I know Cheri mentioned that the family may not have liked him. 
Could that have taken effect by the time Manuel and Maria's son Francisco 
was born? This has to be the same Manuel and Maria that's in my line. I 
just know it.

Also, I can't tell because my posts are being moderated. However, I think I 
might have referred to this as Manuel's baptism when it's his marriage 
record. It seems odd that they'd switch from Absent Antonio to Pai 
Incognito but my gut tells me this is the same Manuel and Maria. Everything 
else adds up.

It's just getting difficult to find the baptism records because although I
know where my grand parents ended up I can't seem to find how they got to
Capelas. I'm having difficulty finding any records. It's likely that they
were registered in another parish. Yikes it's like looking for a needle in
a haystack.

Most of the Rego's and Baldaia's are related. But you have to go back step 
by step to see if it really materializes. You will link up with many 
others, but usually not until about the mid 1700's -1800. Unless you have a 
more near direct relation.

Carolina Do Rego and Antonio Bento Torres. 

Carolina's mother was "Maria do Rego Faulha I think it's the other way 
around. And should be Maria Faulha do Rego (do rego married name)

Her father was Manuel do rego. 

Antonio Bento Torres parent's are listed on ancestry as Jose B and Maria da 
Gloria Baldaia. 

I can't find the records probably because I'm looking in the wrong parish. I've 
been searching in Capelas and Sao Vicente Sao Miguel. 

Carolina Birth year Aprox 1877 and Antonio (1873)

What is interesting is that I saw that Eliseu in this forum stated in a post 
that both Baldaia and Do Rego are his relatives.

If anyone has any of these in your line please let me know!

Espirito, Santa Maria). I've located his baptismal record (see the

His mother's name is given as Alexhandrina da Assunção. Is there a clue in
the name? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.


A couple of additional notes from family stories. Raulino's baptismal
godmother (Maria de Braga) is said to have been Alexandrina's aunt.
Raulino's father is said to have been named Raulino Jose de Sousa. The
family story is that Raulino's father was a cattle merchant from Sao Miguel.


Again any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Kyle Pereira,

I am the author of the genealogy site that you have reffered hereunder. 
I am pleased to infom you that in 1861 were bor two Carolinas. One in 
February (record 14) and the one that you mentioned that was born in 
August. The first one is your ancestor and beyong her fathers I have added 
her grandfathers.
Carolina married with the name of Carolina de Jesus but on the baptism 
records of her sons she is mentioned also as Carolina Augusta.
With her father happens the same concerning the surname "da Ponte".  
Probably the family lived near one bridge and this is a way to distinguish 
people with the same name. As you know josé, sousa, medeiros ando some more 
are very common in S. Miguel.
I have read the comments to your e-mail and so I am not going to repeat 
since I agree with them.
By the way, in my site you can find all the marriages celebrated in the 
church of São Pedro, Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande S. Miguel from 1577 up to 
1977. I have done the same for Lomba de Santa Bárbara, nowadays Santa 
Bárbara, Ribeira Grande.
Since I have a lot of ancestors from Rabo de Peixe I am finishing the 
marriages celebrated in the church of Sr. Bom Jesus (only 190 to go).
I am very careful about the sources and the wring but as Cheri Mello says 
in the first line humans make errors.
Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the info in my site and to begin with you 
have already a lot of relatives there. If you need some more information

CITCEM shows Matias and Domingas as parents of Beatriz not of Manuel. (You may 
need to check their marriage record 11 July 1701 to verify parentage.)  No 
birth dates are shown since records start in 1673 and their birthdates would 
have preceded that date. Domingas reportedly died in 1701 before Beatriz' 
wedding. 

These are not my direct ancestors but I have an extensive number of lines 
located in Sao Mateus and Candelaria, Pico. So, feel free to ask any questions 
for families in those areas and I'll do my best to answer.

 My grandfather is Antonio Francisco Martins, who married Elisa Abreu after the 
couple separately immigrated to the U.S.  He came from Feteira, Faial.  She was 
from Sao Martinho, Madeira.  The married in Oakland, CA. 
 Do you have a tree on Ancestry? Have done any of the DNA tests?

Those  are the registration numbers for those records.  It is a quick way
to trace/obtain the marriage and obit certificates along with the

Yes, all the villages have them. However, I think only some freguesias in
Graciosa and a couple in Terceira have them online. When the government
created the vital record system in 1910/1911 they were after birth,
marriage, death type records. So very few confession rolls were sent to the
government. Most remain at the church.

Something tells me this isn't right. He wouldn't name his father when he
was a groom, and then when his baby was being baptized, he suddenly said
his dad was a pai incognito.

New homework assignment for you. No more researching back in time. Go back
to your immigrant and find all his siblings as well as the siblings'
marriages. Then go back a generation and collect all the siblings of that
generation as well as the marriages of those siblings. Make sure you note
the godparents too. Once you start to get a complete picture of each
generation, things will start to come into focus.

One more thing...quit following the leaves on that tree on Ancestry. Do
your own research then compare it at the end.

This list has 1600 people and many are willing to help you "read" the
records. As you collect siblings though, you will see your "reading" skills
strengthen and it will become easier.

Francisco's grandfather but also lists Antonio Maxado. Do you see if
there's something saying what Antonio is? I can't make out what it says.

Yes, image 0084 is the one I have. And I also found a marriage record for
Manuel and Maria that lists a "father" of some sort for Manuel whereas
Francisco's baptism lists Rosa Maria as single. But Manuel's father is not
listed as "natural" or "legitimate" so maybe it's either the unmarried
father or an adoptive one. I believe I just created another thread but
here's the link to Manuel and Maria's marriage here as well:

[AZORES-Genealogy] My Pai Incognito ancestor suddenly has a father?

Hello!

So I finally have a marriage certificate for my ancestor Manuel Machado and 
I've verified it all by the names of parents of both he and his bride. 
However, on his son's baptismal record, it is said that Manuel's mother was 
unmarried, his father being "pai incognito." However, on his marriage 
certificate, it appears that he has a father named Antonio Machado, though 
he is not listed as being legitimate or natural. Does this mean that 
Antonia was his unmarried father or could he have been an adopted father or 
something? Even looking at Family Search's guide to Portuguese genealogical 
words I'm really having the hardest time understanding this. I'm hoping 
Antonio is the "baby daddy" because it will help track this family further.

I found a baptism record for one of my relatives Joao Cabral (entry No. 
165, or bottom right corner and continuing to the next page). However, I'm 
having trouble reading some of the margin notes, specifically the part 
about his marriage.

"Married Emilia de Jesus (can't read) in Santa Clara church, in the parish 
of Sao Jose, of this council, on the 22nd of September(??) 1957 (can't read 
the rest of the sentence)." The last sentence in that note mentions a date 
of 26 May 1971, but I can't figure out what it's in reference to. Any help?

Also underneath where it refers to when he died, it makes reference to an 
Assento No. 467 - 23 June 1978. What is this in reference to and how can I 
find it? Thanks again.
