Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dissertation on São Jorge Velas society and culture
This paper is fantastic! You can do a search on the locality (or names) and quickly see the references. I love the brands! I found one for someone with the same name and of the same era as my 6 GGrandfather. I can read some Portuguese and this will encourage me to improve and also learn new words. My ancestors were from Rosais and Norte Grande, so the are both covered. Alexis de Medeiros is my 6th great grandfather. He married Antonia Oliveira Carvalho in Bretanha on June 23, 1717. That record is in the marriages book of that period, however, it is out of place. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
Hi Wendy, I'm new to FTDNA, but it looks like you and your grandmother match my mom and me. Two of my mom's grandparents were born on Flores, and I have their lines sketched out to about the mid 1700's/early 1800's. Our connection might be beyond the range of the existing records, but I'm happy to help look for a connection. We have Mendonca and Freitas, among other names, in our tree too. If you haven't already got the Flores/Corvo marriage book, I highly recommend it: https://www.amazon.com/Casais-das-Flores-Corvo-Portuguese-ebook/dp/B00AQAOOF6 It's a searchable index of all the marriage records from the two islands. You can use it to cut down some of the record slogging and to put together a good provisional tree fairly quickly. cheers, Linda Meneses On Monday, January 2, 2017 at 2:18:50 PM UTC-8, WPederson wrote: > > After having my gandmother and dad do DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA, I > was able to narrow down my Azorean ancestors to the island of Flores. > Since then I have found a previously undiscovered 1880 census (Murray, > Alameda, California) for my gg grandfather Jose Freitas Mendonca (was > incorrectly transcribed as Mundunco) that shows he was from Flores. Join the Azores DNA Project here: Log into your FTDNA page with your kit number and password. Across the top is says: myFTDNA, DNA Tests, ProjectsPoint at Projects. When the drop down menu appears, click "Join a project." If the Azores Islands appears on the top, click the link and scroll down to the JOIN button at the end. If the Azores Islands is not suggested, scroll down to where it says "Search by Surname" and type: azores. When Azores Islands appears, click the link follow the directions. You are not ready to research in the Azores yet. Believing someone is from Sao Miguel would be like someone believing their ancestor was from Nebraska. You could look there, but in reality, you need to search the whole United States. [AZORES-Genealogy] Trying to trace the last name Secia in the Azores
Hello - I am hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction. My great-grand parents immigrated to the US in 1902 from the Azores (I believe Sao Miguel). My great-grandfather has a very uncommon name, Manuel Secia born est 1877 and my great-grand mother has an extremely common name, Maria de Mello born est 1868-1874, so both are hard to trace. I have looked for both and can not find the last name Secia in Portugal and I can not find a Maria de Mello around 1868-1874 that got married immigrated to the US. They did have one child in the Azores Mary J Secia 1901 before they immigrated but I can not find anything on the birth. I did take a DNA test and it has linked me to a couple distance cousins in the Azores with the last name of Goulart but we can not figure out how we are linked. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
Wendy, DNA is another tool that we use. So glad it pointed you to Flores so you can start researching there! It seems to me that people on the list connect around 1800-18teens or so. Once you get back another generation or two, you'll probably connect. Also looks that way with your DNA matches too. Once you make the connection with a list member or your DNA match, get them into your tree and get the Gedcom over to FTDNA so you can eventually do the Parental Matching. I have only 2 DNA kits registered to your name. I think your dad is missing. Please join him to the project. Looks like your 2017 is off to a great start. [AZORES-Genealogy] Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
After having my gandmother and dad do DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA, I was able to narrow down my Azorean ancestors to the island of Flores. Since then I have found a previously undiscovered 1880 census (Murray, Alameda, California) for my gg grandfather Jose Freitas Mendonca (was incorrectly transcribed as Mundunco) that shows he was from Flores. I've spent the holiday going through Flores baptismal records and found his baptismal record as well as at least 3 siblings, all with the same parents and grandparents. I'm looking to connect to any descendants but have not found any through DNA matching that share family tree names, only Flores location. Do any of these names match your ancestors?
