Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Vila do Porto - Santa Maria (Pedro Francisco de Bairos and Anna de Andrade Poim)

2017-02-13 Thread JR
Sorry, I was just thinking aloud. Camilha de Resendes is supposed to be the
daughter of Pedro de Bairos who married Dulciana Magalhaes. But Camilha
married Matias Curvello de Matos, June 7- 1635. Pedro Francisco Bairos is
supposed to be her brother, yet he married 45 years later after his sister,
in 1680. Does not seem likely. Nor does it seem likely that Pedro Francisco
married almost 75 years after his parents married. So something is not
right for sure. Just keep collecting as many baptisms and references as you
can. You may be surprised at what you find.

I don't have the answer, but perhaps someone more versed in Santa Maria
ancestry may be able to help. RR may have, and probably did make some make
errors. On the other hand, the records may have been mistranscribed and we
may never know. The records were in better shape when Canto and RR reviewed
them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Vila do Porto - Santa Maria (Pedro Francisco de Bairos and Anna de Andrade Poim)

2017-02-13 Thread George Sousa
Hi JR,

I am a direct descendant of Anna de Andrade who was born in Vila do Porto
on March 16, 1688 (
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1667-1697/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1667-1697_item1/P94.html
).

Anna de Andrade married Mathias de Freitas in Santo Espirito. From what I
can tell the parish records for this time period for Santo Espirito are not
available but I have baptismal records for five of their children (all born
in Santo Espirito).

Anna de Andrade's baptismal record states the following...

"Em dozaseis do mes de marco de mil e seis sentos outenta e outo Baptizeu ?
o Vigario a Anna filha de Pedro de Bairo e de sua mulher Anna de Andrade
forao padrinhos Manuel Gomes filho de Andre Gomes, que Deus tem e madrinha
Francisca de Andrade... era ut Supra"

I believe that the record that I posted earlier (http://culturacores.azores.
gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-C-1649-1681/SMA-
VP-ASSUNCAO-C-1649-1681_item1/P39.html ) is the marriage record of Anna de
Andrade's parents.

My first cut at interpreting this record (which has some damage) is the
following...

"Em Oito do mes de Janeiro de seis sentos e outenta annos Recebi in facie
da Santa Madre Igreja o Pedro Francisco de Bairos filho de (P)edro
Francisco de Bairos e de Sua Mulher ? Magalhaes de ? (ja de)funtos com Anna
de Andrade poim (possibly alpoim) (filha de) Francisco de Andrade de puim e
de sua mulher Maria de andrade de m(el)lo. Forao padrinho pedro de
Bairos..."

I believe the consensus (from those responding to my earlier post) on the
name of the Groom's mother is "Durciana Magalhaes".

JR, do you think I've missed a generation?

George

[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Project

2017-02-13 Thread George Medeiros
I got my family Finder results today from Family Tree. I attempted to join the
azores project and think I joined but not sure I did it right. How will I know
if I am a member ?
How can I use the autosomal results to find my azores cousin matches ? I have
found several people in my Ancestry matches with Portuguese surnames that match
mine but have found none in the cousin matches in Family Tree thus far. Can
anyone explain to me how to use the results I have gotten from Family Tree ?

Thank you Rosemarie and Cheri about the reminder to check with the local

The record does not say anything else as to when she died or why. I would look
for her Obito. My guess would be it is most likely in Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada.
In most cases they did not re-marry for a while after the spouse died (6 months
to a year) but there are always exceptions. I would think if she was buried in
Norta Grande the record would say.

The couple marring also received a dispensation for the 4th degree of affinity
(related through marriage).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes

2017-02-13 Thread Robin Borba Besotes
Take what St. Patrick's Church gives you with a grain of salt. If they
tell you they have no records, don't assume that's the truth. I was told
they did not have a death record from my relative F.J. Bettencourt who dies
in Watsonville around 1933. Guess what? When I visited Watsonville, I
walked across the street from the church to the cemetery and low and behold
I found the burial of F.J. Bettencourt.

Since it's close, I would also recommend checking Hollister records. I've
found relatives buried in the Catholic Cemetery there as well.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes

2017-02-13 Thread Robin Borba Besotes
Hello Caroline,

I believe I have a connection to your Gomes/Brown line. Was Mary A.
Brown's parents, Francisco Silveira de Brum Brown and Maria Lewis? Mary A.
Brown died in June 1973 - Seaside, California? If so, another sister, Rose
E. Brown married Tony L. Gomes. I have some paper documents from research
I've done on my lines from the Watsonville, CA area. I'm happy to look for
you to see if I have any additional information.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for our ancestors who migrated from Azore Islands to Hawaii

2017-02-13 Thread David Perry
In support of John Rapozo's comments, family lore has it that my great
grandfather was a "big shot" in Lagoa, Sao Miguel and in fact many records
have "Barao" after his name. His father was a fisherman and there are no
"Donas" or "Baraos" anywhere in the earlier records. I suspect he took the
title to enhance his standing. For some reason he made a sudden departure
out of town taking his family with him. Later birth records for more
children have him working in a vineyard with no mention of Barao.

2017-02-13 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Bob, I'm so glad that you were able to finish! I had all kinds of trouble
because I used the Portuguese one and had to cut & paste to translate
everything as I went. Then I came to the page that said 'complete order'
and I kept clicking on the words not the tiny box to the left of the words!
When I finally did that the order went through fine! We live and learn, I
guess. This book will be really helpful as you get further back in your
research along with the Portuguese Paleography booklet.
