Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree (Genealogy software) sale through Mon, Nov. 26
Speaking about using Legacy on a Mac… Cheri was correct in that you can do that using any number of Virtualization programs such as Parallels, Fusion, or Apples free Bootcamp. I use Parallels myself and find that it works very, very well. It puts an entire Windows computer within your Mac. The deal is though, that you buy the virtualization software but then you must also have a legal copy of Windows to install on it it just as if it was a regular computer. With this set up you can run any windows genealogy software program or any other windows program on your Mac. If anyone reading this is interested or has anymore questions, you can write me privately so that I could elaborate for you the pros and cons. There are other options, as well. To add to Cheri’s comments about a computer-based genealogy app versus the online apps, I would say also, that I would rather have a computer-based program. You have much more control over your data and don’t have to rely on whether or not ancestry or any of the other sites are down or not functioning correctly or any other number of problems that they could have. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree (Genealogy software) sale through Mon, Nov. 26
Hi Bill R, I'm going to have to take a guess (or assumption) on some of this. Lots of companies that deal with genealogists like to have the words "family tree" in their title. And the GED acronym comes from GEnealogy Data. Family Tree (which I will assume is Family Tree Maker) has a GEDCOM export feature. All genealogy programs have this (software for your computer and cloud based with the exception of FamilySearch). For the genealogy programs on your computer, it's generally File>Export and you want to pick GEDCOM 5.5. For Ancestry, follow these directions: https://goo.gl/akRKwP (I typed " ancestry.com create gedcom" so the same search can be performed with My Heritage or Geni). GEDMatch is NOT a genealogy software. It's a third party tool to help analyze your DNA. They just borrowed the GED from GEDCOM. They should have called it DNAMatch if you ask me. But they didn't ask! :) (For the inquiring minds...GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogy Data COMmunication. It was created by the Mormon church back in the 1980s so all genealogy software platforms would have a way to communicate and share data with each other). After you have your GEDCOM file from whichever tree (or wherever it was stored), you'll do a File>Import of your data. Legacy may read directly from some genealogy software programs (PAF, Ancestral Quest, and TMG). Some things will wander in the GEDCOM import and you'll need to fix them. You'll also find out things you may have been entering incorrectly in your previous program. But a clean-up beats re-entering thousands of people! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree (Genealogy software) sale through Mon, Nov. 26
Ricardo All modern genealogy programs will share data between each other and between different platforms via Gedcom. It’s not a perfect process but generally moves over most data. There can be differences, though, that will need to be addressed and checked upon. Hope that helps. I have over 180 “Maria de Jesus” in my program, try and find the right on in dealing with that number. I could not do that with an online program. My program also lets me us AKA’s in sorting. I have one 2nd great grandmother that was known by six different names in records. Try showing that on ancestry. I also belong to a help group for the software I use and we help each other solve problems and techniques in use of the software. (Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes lists) Legacy Family Tree, a genealogy software, is having a sale through Monday, November 26th. [image: image.png] The basic software, usually $34.95 USD is on sale for $17.48. Other products are on sale too: https://goo.gl/C93xVF You can download their Standard Edition (free) at www.legacyfamilytree.com See how you like it. I'm guessing the other companies will have sales too. Yes, Legacy is a Windows/PC software. Currently, you can use it if you are a Mac running VM Fusion, Parallels, and BootCamp (I think). I'm not a Mac user, but Kathy Cardoza is and she runs lots of Windows products on her Mac and uses Legacy. (Note: The Mac version of Legacy Family Tree is still under development as of August 2017). Why have a genealogy software program on your computer when you use Ancestry, My Heritage, Geni, FamilySearch, or whatever on the Internet? 1) You have more tools at your disposal. 2) You have more ways to analyze your data. 3) You can print charts 4) There's mapping features. 5) You can back it up to the Legacy cloud so if your computer goes on the blink, you'll have a back up. I'm sure there's many more. The online vendors are more of a family tree display. You can have your genealogy software program, create a Gedcom, and upload it to your online tree. Legacy syncs with My Heritage and FamilySearch (well, if you want it to). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Trying to understand an Exposto record (1862, Fenais da Vera Cruz)
For the record. The baby was given to be raised by Maria de Jesus. She was The nursemaid not the Godmother. The exposto baby was given the number 941 and was entered in the book of registration. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Trying to understand an Exposto record (1862, Fenais da Vera Cruz)
Thank you all for your responses! This is really interesting to me. I have not had an orphaned baby associated with my family before. So, my relative was listed as someone who would be godmother to these babies. The link provided an interesting history. I had heard of the "wheel" before, but didn't really understand the concept. Now I have a much better idea of what it was. Thanks again for the help on this record!
