Celeste, Thank you so much for the information!
Wonderful that you have such a database. I believe a while back you mentioned
you had some SPRSI death records too?  I do have a suggestion (per your
question).  If you really are looking for a place to house it,  Kathy Cardoza
may be interested in hosting it on her Azores Genweb website.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Another marriage Sao Jorge

2017-09-10 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
It's just like Rosemarie said, and we entered (Damaged), ???, or (Not Given)
depending on why information in certain fields could not be deduced.
I can however tell you that one of these is likely the marriage of Manuel
Pereira Fagundes and a Cecelia Pereira. She was of Sao Sebastiao Terceira. If I
remember correctly they had a daughter Barbara in 1740.
It's confusing because there was also a Manuel Pereira Reis married to a
Cecelia Pereira at the same time in Calheta, and Rosemarie Capodicci and I are
descended from that couple.

same way as previously done by Marcio Borba.
I had traced my line back to a 5th great grandfather in Sao Jorge, and since
his marriage record is among the missing,  I was not able to determine his
parenthood.  However, I knew that based on his death record he was born in
Calheta about 1700.  His name was Francisco and so there are way to many births
for me to latch on to any particular one.  I was doing research on another line
going through the early death records of the same town.  I stumbled across one
for a lady named Maria de Sousa.  The record mentioned the soul of her grandson
Pascoal de Sousa, son of Francisco de Sousa Goulart, her son.  I always to at
least some research on my distant aunts and uncles (as all should) and so I
knew when he died, and it was indeed before her.  The Francisco de Sousa
Goulart was my ancestor, ThereforeI was able to tac on another generation.
The moral of this being that there is some good information in some of those
older death records where they list whom the person was predeceased by, and
always always always pull at least the baptismal records of your ancestors
siblings.  The collateral research always pays off.

Margaret,
I personally read most of the groups threads.  Every once in a while though, I
do miss stuff. However, if someone put one of my main research islands in the
subject line, you can bet that I would open it because it would be of higher
relevance to me as a researcher. Even though I plan on doing this in the future
with my messages, it does not mean that I am going to stop reading the threads
about islands like Sao Miguel (where I dont have any lineage)... I think that
those of us who consistently read the messages will continue to do so
regardless.  It can still be interesting for all of us - wether our family was
on a certain island, or not.  Sometimes you can jump in with an idea even
though you may not have relatives there ~ but the point stands that this system
would be greatly beneficial for the sake of organizing the massive quantities
of email that we receive from this group.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Books On Sao Jorge

2017-06-28 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello!

I believe the following should be of interest to Sao Jorge researchers:

I found online a while back that a gentleman named Climaco Ferreira da
Cunha, who lives in Calheta, Sao Jorge, has written three books about Sao
Jorge. I reached out to him to inquire about the contents of each book,
and here is what I recieved:

*1st. Book:* "Remembering the Past", speaks about the experience of our
people from 70, 80 years ago. It has 310 pages, 50 different articles
accompanied by 50 photographs, begins with the grandmother's apron, the
child in the twentieth century, the school in our past, old games and toys,
the beggar in the twentieth century, the dating of old and many more. Price
10 euros.

*2nd. Book:* "São Jorge and its Fajãs", has 226 pages and deals since the
discovery of the Azores, settlement of the island of São Jorge and its
development, the history of the 76 fajãs that existed and the more detailed
history of the fajãs that have their Ermidas, like the Fajã dos Cubres,
citing the reason for this name, and the history of its Hermitage dedicated
to Our Lady of Lourdes, speaks of its lagoon, its rivers and its evolution,
presenting photographs of the main fajãs and at the end of the Book some
curiosities concerning our island. Price 10 euros.

*3rd. Book:* "The Feasts of the Holy Spirit in the county of Calheta",
which are 10 empires and consequently 10 different parties with their
history of the past and the present, the thirds sung in these empires,
symbolism of the insignia of the Holy Spirit, and at the end Of the book
recipes of the menu that is served on the day of the calls "soups",
photographs of all 23 empires of the island, has 298 pages. Price 12 euros.

The cost of sending by mail to the United States is 7 euros for the book
Sao Jorge and it's Fajãs, and about 14 euros for the others, because they
are heavier and exceed half a kilo.

The author has also informed me that he will accept paypal as payment to
the following address: ge...@cfc.pt ~ simply put in your address, the
title of the book you would like, and send enough money for the combined
euro price of shipping and the book.

I believe that I will be ordering the 2nd book about the history of the
Island, and Rosemarie the same.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Thank you, and happy hunting!

His birth date was September 4th of 1888, and he was baptized on September

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Seca Sao Jorge Confessional Rolls Now Available

2017-06-12 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello!

I'm now providing a complete, searchable TRANSCRIPT of the *Ribeira Seca's
Confessional Rolls for 1832, 1839, 1875, 1884, and 1900* in their entirety.
They are available at the below link, and may be downloaded as .xls files
for your personal use. It is more that probable that I will do the same
for other freguesias when they are re-formatted into similar formats that
are user-friendly. I am not making these available on the web though - so
you will need to click the 'request access' button after clicking the link,
I will review and approve the request, thus enabling your account to access
and download the content.

For those of you who are not familiar with Confessional Rolls, they have
the genealogical application of a census, and include much of the same
information... (i.e. Head of household, subsequent family members, their
relationship to the head of house, their age, occupation, the neighborhood
or street they resided in, and occasionally the address and sometimes other
notes. I even have found the father of an illegitimate ancestor in these
rolls. The priest walked and recorded the data house to house so you also
can find info by seeing who they lived near or next to.

You may query the .xls sheet with Ctrl+F on PC's and Command+F on Macs.

Request access at:

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Jorge Marriage Database

2017-03-30 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
There would be no copyright infringement!! AND this has nothing to do with the
CCA. When you have offered to help with indexing and have been turned down it
sounds like they are turning you down from hosting the index in a professional
manor.
This would be an index private persons put together for personal use. Also the
info is merely being extracted from the records, and I am not copying any
digital images which would be an offense.
Whose to say I am getting this from the CCA? What is the CCA? I could be
spending hours on LDS MICROFILM - don't assume I am not. I am making a PERSONAL
index. This index will NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BE PUT ONLINE. It will
merely be made by me for personal use, and others will make their indexes for
personal use, and we will join them, and give them out to people at our
"prerogative."
As for Rosemarie's point about the older records being harder - that is valid,
espescially with all the abreviations, but that just means we have to take our
time to get it right.,

Jeremy,
Any guidelines?
Leave out the de, da, do, etc?Use the most current spelling of the name (i.e.
Joaquim vs Joachim)?Place spaces between the date (12 Sep 1899 vs. 12Sep1899).
You rock!

Members interested could each do a specific section (like 1 freguesia

both. Ribeira Seca would require multiple people. Who is interested? Over
the coarse of a year we could do it!

margin.

Examples include:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812_item1/P78.html

The same notation can be found in the villages death books:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818_item1/P175.html

This is repeated every handful of entries. I would love to know what the priest
was denoting, or counting! Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

2017-03-14 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
The privacy laws mentioned so not apply in cases where the person listed on the
record is deceased - assuming you are able to provide a death certificate (I
can provide the consular certificates of death of an American citizen abroad)

Unfortunately it was finally in 1930.

Below is a copy of the request I was planning on sending out prior to the phone
conversation

"To whom it may concern,

I am requesting a copy of passport No. 233977 of May 13th, 1930. It is for a
Mr. Antonio Machado Cardoza AKA Cardozo/Cardoso. He was born on January 5th,
1879 in Sao Thiago, Faja Dos Cubres, Ribeira Seca, St. George, Azores, became a
citizen of the United States in 1904 at the San Luis Obispo, CA Superior
Court., and died in Sao Thiago, Faja Dos Cubres, Ribeira Seca, St. George,
Azores on January 26th 1933. The deceased was my great-great-uncle. Enclosed
you will find a copy of a report of his death from the United States Consular
Service, and of both sides of my government-issued photo identification. As he
is deceased, I believe this third-party request for the record of a deceased
person falls under FOIA. I do not require this copy to be apostilled or
certified."

My uncle was in the US by like 1902 but was gone someone shortly following
1911. He is on the 1910 cencus in Morro Bay, CA.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I have followed the instructions provided about mailing in to the Dept of
State Office of Law Enforcement Liason for a "Post 1925 passport of a
deceased person" (The one in question is from 1930, he died in 1933).

Before actually sending off the letter I typed up along with the death cert
and photo ID, I phoned their office. The lady did not sound particularly
knowledgeable about requests for deceased persons, and was unable to locate
information on procedure for my particular case, but she said "Third part
requests MUST be certified, and therefore you are obligated to pay a $150
search fee". WHAT CROOKS! $150 for a damn passport? As you would say - to
much vinho, but they arent even Azorean!

So my question is this: Have you ever actually sent in for a passport in
this situation? With what results?

More than anything I just want the date he left the US to go back home
(permanently), and I want his photograph above all!

Gaudencio is the proper spelling (no 'L').
I have also seen Gaudencia's and would be interested in learning of them too!

Thanks,

J.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Gauldencio NAME

2017-02-27 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello,

I am trying to track information on the given name Gauldencio or Gauldencio or
Gaides as it may aid in my genealogy. If ANYONE has ANY person with this given
name in their records, regardless of surname, I would be most interested to
learn of them. It is an exceedingly rare given name, and I am particularly
interested in any instances of it on Pico!

Thank you!

Jeremy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

2017-02-27 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

Hello!

I have 3 immigrant ancetors from the Azores, I have been successful in trading
the lineage of two of them in Sao Jorge. The third, my grandmother, came from
Pico and is a complete mystery - which is truly unbelivable given the abnormal
names of her brothers, and the extent of the info we Do have.  Just can't seem
to find any records on Pico whatsoever for them.

My grandmother's name was Maria Emilia Rosa da Terra. She was born somewhere on
Pico in or about April/May 1854-1860.  Most records give April 22nd 1855.
, but 1858 is prevelant too.  She came to the United States in the early to mid
1870s settling in California.

She had two brothers named Augusto Garcia Terra and Gauldencio Garcia Terra.
Gauldencio married in Massachusetts in 1873, Augusto never married. Both
brothers had made it to California by 1879 where they were Naturalized in San
Luis Obispo. They were whalers.

Our working hypothesis is that they may have originated in the Santa Lucia or
Bandeiras area.  They were FULL siblings.

The parents were Joao Garcia de Terra and Maria Rosa. NOT Manuel and Maria as
one record for Gaudencio falsely states.

#) Gauldencio or Gaudencio "Gaides" (various spellings) Garcia Terra was born
approx. NOVEMBER 1838-1840. He died in 1916 in SLO County CA.

#) Augusto Garcia Terra was born in abt. 1852, and died in 1929 in SLO CA.

#) Maria was born about April 1854-1860 and died in SLO County CA in 1942. Her
married name was Reis.

We have an extraordinary amount of information, and documentation on them in
the United States, but nothing from Pico.

If anyone can render ANY assistance, it would be gratefully appreciated.  Also
if anyone has the name Gauldencio or Gauldencio or Augusto or Joao Garcia Terra
in their databases I would be interested to know!

Thank you

Jeremy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Missing Records - Lomba, Flores

2017-02-27 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Does anyone know of ANY records for Lomba Flores that cover the period prior to
1844? I am looking for any information from around 1700-1770! Are there any
unpublished manuscripts covering the region that anyone knows about? If so I
would certainly appreciate it!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Well,

Since I have been spending the time to try and get the tombstones online
for the Azores, I thought of the idea that it would be super easy if I just
reached out to the source directly.
So I contacted either the cemetery (if it was big enough that I could find
the email address of a specific person to contact) or the Council itself.

I got a great many replies to my query about what their current exhumation
period / burial duration was and whether or not they would be willing to
send copies of cemetery records, and I explained what I was doing with it.
It seems sometimes the Council sets an exhumation dates, and sometimes its
just the individual church: very locality specific. Anyways, several of
them actually sent me rosters of all the people that have been interred in
recent years that they had computerized, and rosters of people whose
remains were 'set for exhumation' (unless the family takes action), one had
the records in an excel going back a hundred years, and other
charts/diagrams that they had and were willing to share. Of course, most
of my queries went unanswered, but I did get alot of data, and information
out of it. Only one actually responded with a decline to provide info, the
rest were extraordinarily helpful. That is how I put together the ranges I
previously posted...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
DURATION OF INTERNMENT BEFORE EXHUMATION:

THIS IS FROM 2017

Sao Miguel Council de Ponta Delgada, (and it looks like pretty much the
rest of the island): extended to 30 Years death
Pico, Graciosa, Faial: extended to 30 Years after death in some
juristictions, or dependent upon "Families need for space in their
designated lot" in others
Flores: dependent upon "Families need for space in their designated lot"
(MANY GRAVES EXIST ON FLORES AND CORVO FROM 19th CENTURY. MORE SO THAN ANY
OTHER ISLANDS)
Sao Jorge Councils de Calheta e Velas: dependent upon "Families need for
space in their designated lot"

It appears that the "7 years" commonly discussed here is no longer in
effect.

In Sao Miguel for example, I have been informaed that people who died in
1987 are presently being exhumed, and the graves being re-opened.

Thought this may interest some.

I'm sure Mr. Almeida's list is not comprehensive. As titled, he found only
anglicized names in California. None from New England, Canada, nor Hawaii, etc.

Others may have found different anglicizations (sp) in their research.

I can't answer your question. I just wanted to mention that Machado often
