Hi Linda,

I found your cousin Eloise’s work cited as a source on a search, but never
found the actual articles she wrote. If you have copies, may we have access to
them? Will Eloise give us permission?

Cheri will know if it’s acceptable or not to use her article on this site. I
can help make them into a link if you need help. My email is below.

Thank you!

The towns and cities had Foundling homes, usually convents, but not all
churches in the cities and towns were foundling homes. In the villages, as can
be seen in baptismal records, the foundlings were left either at somebody's
door or in a place where they would likely be found. Eloise Cadinha studied
this situation extensively and I have her notes.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Connections in Newspaper Article.

2018-02-27 Thread Linda Jardin

My cousin and I have been researching our exposta Leonor de Conceciao who was
born in December 1870 and left in the Rhoda at the Matriz Sao Sebastio, Ponte
del Gasa, Sao Miguel, Azores. It has long been passed down the although she
was left at the convent, her aunt came later to pick her up and raise her. So
far we have found her Baptismal record and her marriage record. Most recently,
my cousin found this newspaper article which tells a little story about her.
Most importantly it links her with a Costa, Linhares, family. The last line is
the best because it tells us that she was raised by Marie Church's great-great
grandfather. Marie Church is the daughter of Maria Carmen Linhares Costa. We
are thinking this may be part of the line we can connect with Leonor. Anyone
out there related to this line? Let me know.

Muito Obrigado,

Linda Jardin

Success!!!

Thank you to each and every one of you who have spent time searching on my
behalf and to each one of you following this thread. I could not have done it
without you. You are an answer to my prayers! God Bless you!
I have been searching for Velma Cotta, my birth mother, for most of my adult
life with no results beyond finding out her name and marriage to my birth
father. Due to the help from members of this group - she has been identified
and I have been able to locate and contact my actual, real 1st cousin! A child
of Velma's sister!
The information came in a little bit at a time but then quickly once we were
pretty sure we were on the right trail. Understanding the name change from
Belmira to Velma was really the first clue. Then census info, newspapers
articles, tracking the people who might be the right family, finding graves,
then obituaries of Velma's parents (thank you Sequoia Genealogical Society!)
and then the obituary of Velma's sister. I don't have permission to name the
people who actually found all this but you can find them on this thread :)
They did all the important work as I have no clue.
To you who have been searching, too. Keep looking and trying and I hope for
your success!
Thank you,
Dave

Baptism

Please see original record here:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-GUADALUPE-B-1832-1841/GRA-SC-GUADALUPE-B-1832-1841_item1/P162.html

(second record on left)

I believe the first name is Horinda, but I am not at all positive. I've
created a study of the name (attached). The first line of the graphic is the
original name in context. The second line is several variations on the first
name. The third line is another version of the name in the same record
(Horinda de Cunha de Mello Pacheco?).

This appears to be another branch of my Vasconcellos line on Graciosa.

Thank you!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy]

2013-11-01 Thread Linda Jardin
Hi Shirley,

Wow, what a nice surprise! I am looking for the baptismal record for my
great grandmother Leonor. Cherri helped me find her marriage record to
my great grandfather Antonio Ferreira. Their marriage record is Sao
Miguel, Feteiras, Ponta Delgada in 1892. CCA 1892 pages 5 and 6.
Leonor was baptized in the Matriz, Sao Sebastiao. In the margin it
appears the priest recorded her name as Leonor da Concenciao. Her
husband Antonio was baptized in Santa Luzia in 1866. Her passport
record in 1895 lists her as Leonor de Jesus. Confusing. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Yes, she is buried in Holy Sepulchre in Hayward. My cousin had a grave
marker put in but her name is spelled wrong and the dates are wrong
also. This will help us correct that. Both sides of my family are also
buried there. It is a beautiful, peaceful place with lots of
Portuguese. My paternal grandparents are buried three or four rows up
from Leonor. Purely coincidental.

Linda J,

Hopefully, the CCA will post Sao Sebastiao before the end of the year.
They are in the Sao part of the alphabet and posting records in the
council of Ponta Delgada.

If you test your mtDNA, understand that you MUST be the daughter of the
daughter of the daughter of Leonorwomen all the way back to her.
Also understand that *most* mtDNA results are anthropological in nature
- the out of Africa theory. You are less likely to get a genealogy
match that you would be able to document on paper unless you just happen
to have a rare mutation. With that being said, we've had 1 or maybe 2
people who have been able to document their mtDNA match on paper (due to
a rare mutation). We have about 250 mtDNA results in the Azores
database.

Currently, the other 2 types of DNA testing are Y-DNA (and Leonor was
not a man) or autosomal DNA (Family Finder). The X chromosome testing
is on the horizon, so that will become the 4th type of DNA testing. I
would think that there will be more on this in 2014.

Hi Doug,

This is what I found so far. The passport record from Ponta Delgada to
Hawaii in 1985. Leonor is listed as Leonor de Jesus pais incognitos.
In 1892 Leonor married Antonio Ferreira Cherri helped me with the
marriage record and it reads Leonor (unable to make out the last name)
is from the Matriz, Sao Sebastiao. I found Antonio's baptism record
from Feteiras in 1866. I do know Leonor was older by a few years than
Antonio. I have searched almost all of the baptism records for a Leonor
and the only one I found was Leonor in 1893. I know her parents were
not married. Family stories say her aunt raised her. Since I am unable
to read the document I can't really figure out if this is her or not.

Hi Linda,

I don't know if you found your ancestor, but the person in the record is
a distant relative to me.

If you think your ancestors are from Terceira, you should also get the
Family Finder DNA test for additional leads as to who might be your
living relatives.

Interestingly, this person has one ancestor born in Brasil.

To help determine whether you found the right ancestor, what information
do you have that lead you to think you found the right one here? What is
her full name? If you found the right ancestor, it should match to
someone in the record.

You mention she was abandoned and this person was not. At least, not
immediately. She was not an exposta, but her parents are not married, as
you probably noticed.

Sorry, we are looking for Leonor. I believe that is the name in the

believe it states her baptism or birth month of November 1863. The year

Linda J,

The Passaporte record says that Antonio Ferreira and Leonor de Jesus are
both from Feteiras on Sao Miguel island. He's 26, she's 29 and they are
married with a 5 month old. The date of the passaporte is Feb 5, 1895, so
they were married as of that date. Don't believe who ever told you that
they married in 1893. They were married by Feb 5, 1895 and for all you
know, they married Feb. 4, 1895. Or maybe 5 month old Maria was the first
baby to live and there are 5 other babies before her and your ancestors
married in 1890. Start with the marriages of Feteiras, begin in Feb of
1895, and work back until you find the marriage. When the site is up for

Linda J,

I think that surname is all over. To get to Hawaii, you had to sail out
of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island. I've typed the proper spelling
(minus the diacritic over the a in Sao) and you should spell it that
way in your genealogy program. The Passaportes for the 1890s will tell
you the freguesia.

Emigration OUT of Ponta Delgada exists on the CCA site (passaportes).
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/passaportes/Default.aspx

Pick Ponta Delgada from the drop down menu.
Pick the range that covers 1895.

Start the hunt!

Good luck,

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] 3 Types of DNA Testing

I'm getting questions about matching. Most of the talk on the list
right now is regarding the Family Finder testing.

Once upon a time, there were only 2 types of DNA testing: Y-DNA and
mtDNA. We talked about these tests from 2000 to about 2010. It was all
that was available back then. Y-DNA tested a MAN's strict paternal
line: His father's father's father's line, or top of the pedigree. If
you were a female, you had to hunt a male relative down to do a DNA test
for that line. Also available was mtDNA: this is anyone's mother's
mother's mother's line, or the bottom of the pedigree. Most of the
information from an mtDNA test is more anthropological in nature than
genealogical (anthropological = like anthropology - deep roots, out of
Africa theory, think the Flintstones for those familiar with that
cartoon series).

I guess the DNA community did a real good job of getting Y-DNA and mtDNA
into everyone's heads. So in 2010, a new type of DNA testing was
available. Autosomal DNA testing. Family Tree DNA marketed this test
as Family Finder (FF). It's a completely different type of test.

Family Finder (FF) covers ALL the lines of the testee (whether a man or
a woman takes the test) back about 200 years. I was born in the 1960s.
I should see results going back to about the 1760s. I should find
matches that are Portuguese from my dad's half, matches from my dad's
British Isles half, and matches from my mom's Ozarks lineage. I'm
seeing my ENTIRE tree. But since I still have access to my parents, I
tested them. They are born in the 1930s, so I should see matches on ALL
their lines back to about the 1730s. I have identified one on my mom
back to 1760. I've identified a couple of my dad that go back far - one
to 1696, but that's an intermarried line, so the DNA did not get
diluted.

Those are the 3 types of DNA testing for genealogists on the market.
Which one should you chose? That depends on your goal. A Y-DNA or
mtDNA gives a restricted, narrow focus: One line only. Family Finder
(FF) gives a broad overview of ALL your lines. It's presented to you as
a plate of spaghetti and you have to untangle all the lines. Posting
your Gedcom is necessary so you can see your matches' trees and your
matches can see your tree.

HI Linda J,

They don't do blood. They haven't used blood samples in 12? 15? years!
They now use saliva. You scrape the inside of the cheek. It is
completely painless. The scraper looks like a tiny toothbrush or
women's makeup brush, but it's made out of some type of hard cardboard
or cotton type stuff: http://goo.gl/zHSWZY

There's two ways to get to the exposta. You can do the Full mtDNA test
on the daughter of the daughter of the daughter of the exposta. That
isolates that one line. You will have to wait for meaningful matches to
come in. You could also do the Family Finder (FF) test. Work on
identifying all your mom's other lines. The ones that you can't match
up to will start to belong to the exposta line. Then you can work that
angle. But you have to identify the others first.

You will also need a Gedcom up. And you'll need (at bare minimum) an
island for Leonor de Jesus or Manuel Ferreira. Asking for them in the
Azores is about the same as asking for John Smith and Mary Jones in
America. Gotta narrow down the location for those people.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel Ferreria, Leonor De Jesus

2013-07-09 Thread Linda Jardin
I am the great granddaughter of Antonio Ferreira and Leonor De Jesus. I
know that they left Ponta Delgada in 1865 and arrived in Hawaii of that
same year. At the time they left they had their first child Maria
Ferreira with them, she was 5 months old. By way of Passport records I
know my ggf's parents were Manuel Ferreira and Jacinta or Jacintha
Duarto of Feteiras. If anyone has any link to them please let me know.
I know Manuel was 26 and Leonor was 29 and they were married in 1863.
Maria was born in 1864. I can trace them to the Hawaiian Islands and to
Hayward and Oakland, CA. Leonor died in 1960 in Oakland. I am not able
to find any record of Antonio after his arrival to Hayward in 1920.
They also had a son named Manuel born in Hilo who came to California and
I can find no trace of him either. There were also two other daughters
born of their marriage Julia and Virginia both born in Hilo. Virginia
is my grandmother. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone has to
offer.

yes, it is from the Mormon's Family History Library Catalog. They
filmed all the church records in the Azores. These church records are
great...Parents and where they are from; grandparents and where they are
from...the newer records give the greats and where they are from. These
census records were copied from the churches which were required to send
copies to the gov't. I don't know if later records provided as much
info as the earlier records. I can't remember where I got my church
records...I think at the Mormon Library. i never had to write for

5th 1895 destination Hawaii. They were married in 1893, had a child
Maria born in October 1894. Passport record identifies his parents as
Manuel Ferreira and Jacintha Duarto of Feteiras. I am looking for
information prior to their leaving the Azores. Family stories say that
Lenor was in an orphanage and later taken back by her aunt (name at this
point unknown). Any suggestions on where to go from here?
