when my great grandmother was living in the United States, her mother died

2019-12-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Elaine S,

Well if you have information that your ancestor was a foundling (orphaned),
then Margaret found the wrong record. You need to go to this record set and
look at every Guilhermina and find one without parents.
https://tombo.pt/en/f/pdl04

Alternatively, if you have her immigration date, you can search the Azorean
"passaportes" for her LEAVING the Azores. They state if they had parents
(or not) and who they were.

Good luck!

Thank you again! This is all so amazing to me. I was concerned my great
grandmother was adopted or an orphan.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Guilhermina Camara’s birth certificate

2019-12-22 Thread Cheri Mello
The church is Nossa Senhora da Apresentação. You can find a list of
freguesias (villages) and their churches on the Azores GenWeb. Here they
are for Sao Miguel island:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/sao-miguel/

Generally, those who live outside the Azores only translate the word Açores
to Azores. Some leave it as Açores. However, once we are researching there,
we leave the island, freguesia, and church in its native language. So we
leave it in Portuguese. Because saying someone is from Chapels and the
church is Our Lady of the Presentations sounds like you are going to do a
Power Point! :)

Also on the Azores GenWeb is a translation guide. Catholic records follow a
certain format. Here are the key words. At the end is a link that will take
you to translations so you can learn to bumble your way through the records
too.
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/finding-your-portuguese/finding-your-portuguese-9/

Hope you find this helpful.

Hi Elaine S,

Sao Miguel island has a freguesia (village) called CapelaS. Not Capela.
There's a Capelo on the island of Faial as well. I just want to be sure
that you are interested in Capelas (a freguesia), on the island of Sao
Miguel, which is one of the Azores Islands. No need to state that it's in
the Azores, since that is why this group exists. If it is indeed Capelas on
Sao Miguel island, please confirm so we can provide the correct information.
