RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria Isabel Rodrigues

2018-03-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Just some quick thoughts. The name Joseph Silva Dyce – I believe Dyce is a
phonetic spelling of Dias so in Portuguese records it would be Jose da Silva
Dias. Where did this Joseph Nichols come from? Did Jose da Silva Dias die and
Maria Isabel remarry? You kind of indicate this but you have no death date for
Jose da Silva Dias or a marriage record with Jose Nichols.

Have you done any DNA testing to see if you can get any matches with an
indication of which island and general location your ancestors may be from?

I have done a lot of research with nothing to show for her life before coming
to US. I chose Angustius out of dumb luck to be honest. I was simply trying
to look at baptism records around the birth date of Oct 26, 1830 as a last
ditch effort. Angustius is simply where I started.

What I know.

* Mary Esabel Rodrigues arrives in the US prior to 1868 even though the
1880 Oakland, CA census record indicates 1870 as arrival year.
* Mary Esabel Rodrigues gave birth to Mary Agnes Silva, Jan 24th 1868 in
Buffalo, NY. Joseph Silva listed as father.
* Mary gave birth to a second child named Joseph Silva, August 2, 1869 in
Oakland, CA. Joseph Silva listed as father.
* Using Oakland Directory records Maria is living at the same address as
Joseph Nichols. Joseph Nichols is also written on the back of a family photo I
have, listed as Step Father to Mary Agnes Silva.
* Son, Joseph Silva changes name to Joseph Dyce. Joseph Silva Dyce shown
on death cert and internment records.
* Joseph Nichols dies Sept 15, 1893. I have death cert. Lists Mary
Roderick as maiden name of mother and Joseph Dyce as father.
* Maria Esabel Rodrigues now Maria Esabel Nichols dies in Oakland, CA Nov
4, 1901. I have death cert.

Media

* 1880 US Census Oakland, CA showing Joseph, Mary, Mary, Joseph. Age of
Mary shown as 40. (Address matches City Directory Records)
* Death Certificates for Maria Isabel Nichols, Joseph Nichols, Joseph
Silva Dyce, Mary Agnes Silva. Age of Mary shown as 70 at death in 1901.
* Numerous Oakland City Directories and voter registrations for Joseph
Nichols and Mary Nichols. Joseph Nichols first recorded in Oakland 1878 (City
Directory)
* 1900 US Census Oakland, CA showing Mary E Nichols. Age of Mary show as
40. (Address matches City Directory Records)
* Newspaper obit is slight only saying native of azores, aged 70 and 9
days. Same as death cert.
* The best evidence is a photo given to me by my grandmother. In
handwriting on the back, it tells who is in the photo. Attached in the thread
below.

Could not find

* Mary Agnes Silva birth cert (if exists)
* Ship manifests for Mary Isabel Rodrigues and Joseph Silva. Have no
idea what island they are from.
* What happened to Joseph Silva.
* Parent names of Mary Esabel Rodrigues
* Church records in Oakland, yet. (I just recently requested a records
search at the Oakland Diocese)
* Other newspaper tidbits except below:

Joseph Silva Dyce died in 1915 and was a dead end. Nothing useful in the few
records I could find.

Another mystery find. I found a newspaper clipping in the notice section that
read;

Dec 19, 1901 --Joseph Silva or Dyce, son of Mary Foote (Silva) deed to Mary A
Pereira or Perry and C F Pereira, All int N park... She may have changed her
name or remarried for a third time to a Mr. Foote. I found a Mr. Foote living
near by at the time of death.

John M,

I cannot duplicate any of the searches that you have listed.

Are you a descendant of the child, Mary Agnes Silva, born 1868, or a
descendant of Joseph Silva, born 1869?

Did you DNA test yet? The Azores project is now large enough to give you at
least an island group if not the island. I'd need to know what you have on
your whole tree though.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria Isabel Rodrigues

2018-03-22 Thread John Machado

I have done a lot of research with nothing to show for her life before
coming to US. I chose Angustius out of dumb luck to be honest. I was
simply trying to look at baptism records around the birth date of Oct 26,
1830 as a last ditch effort. Angustius is simply where I started.

What I know.

   - Mary Esabel Rodrigues arrives in the US prior to 1868 even though the
1880 Oakland, CA census record indicates 1870 as arrival year.
   - Mary Esabel Rodrigues gave birth to Mary Agnes Silva, Jan 24th 1868 in
Buffalo, NY. Joseph Silva listed as father.
   - Mary gave birth to a second child named Joseph Silva, August 2, 1869
in Oakland, CA. Joseph Silva listed as father.
   - Using Oakland Directory records Maria is living at the same address as
Joseph Nichols. Joseph Nichols is also written on the back of a family
photo I have, listed as Step Father to Mary Agnes Silva.
   - Son, Joseph Silva changes name to Joseph Dyce. Joseph Silva Dyce
shown on death cert and internment records.
   - Joseph Nichols dies Sept 15, 1893. I have death cert. Lists Mary
Roderick as maiden name of mother and Joseph Dyce as father.
   - Maria Esabel Rodrigues now Maria Esabel Nichols dies in Oakland, CA
   Nov 4, 1901. I have death cert.

Media

   - 1880 US Census Oakland, CA showing Joseph, Mary, Mary, Joseph. Age of
Mary shown as 40. (Address matches City Directory Records)
   - Death Certificates for Maria Isabel Nichols, Joseph Nichols, Joseph
Silva Dyce, Mary Agnes Silva. Age of Mary shown as 70 at death in 1901.
   - Numerous Oakland City Directories and voter registrations for Joseph
Nichols and Mary Nichols. Joseph Nichols first recorded in Oakland 1878
   (City Directory)
   - 1900 US Census Oakland, CA showing Mary E Nichols. Age of Mary show
as 40. (Address matches City Directory Records)
   - Newspaper obit is slight only saying native of azores, aged 70 and 9
   days. Same as death cert.
   - The best evidence is a photo given to me by my grandmother. In
handwriting on the back, it tells who is in the photo. Attached in the
   thread below.

Could not find

   - Mary Agnes Silva birth cert (if exists)
   - Ship manifests for Mary Isabel Rodrigues and Joseph Silva. Have no
idea what island they are from.
   - What happened to Joseph Silva.
   - Parent names of Mary Esabel Rodrigues
   - Church records in Oakland, yet. (I just recently requested a records
   search at the Oakland Diocese)
   - Other newspaper tidbits except below:

Joseph Silva Dyce died in 1915 and was a dead end. Nothing useful in the
few records I could find.

Another mystery find. I found a newspaper clipping in the notice section
that read;

*Dec 19, 1901 --Joseph Silva or Dyce, son of Mary Foote (Silva) **deed to
Mary A Pereira or Perry and C F Pereira, All int N park... *She may have
changed her name or remarried for a third time to a Mr. Foote. I found a
Mr. Foote living near by at the time of death.

John M,

Any post over 30 days old is closed. I suggest you just explain again who
you are looking for and what you have done so far (U.S. Census,
naturalization, obituaries, etc). In the past 5 years we have several
hundred new members so it would be good to post again. Someone in the past
5 years may have your answer!

I have no clue as to why you are picking Angustius in Horta on Faial
island. Maybe it's her and maybe it's not. The Azores are 9 islands with
approximately 165 church parishes to look at. I'm sure I could find another
Maria born approximately on the date you provide in at least half the
parishes in the Azores. That would put you on a wild goose chase.

Not knowing what other research you have done, no one can evaluate your
evidence and give you their thoughts on if it's the correct Maria or not.
So please explain what research you have done, why you are picking
Angustias, if you know your Mary/Maria's siblings or parents, etc.
Thanks, Cheri

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria Isabel Rodrigues

2018-03-22 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
This looks like a strong possibility of being the correct birth record. If you
have not already done so I would go forward two years to make sure there is not
another Maria close to the birth date of Oct 26 1830. But remember that date is
based on the death an very well may be off by a year. I would also check the
Obits to make sure Maria did not die because according to the record you found
she was baptized at home because they thought she would not live.

It reads Maria daughter of Andre Rodrigues and his wife Maria Isabel. Natives
of the parish of NS. Angustias, paternal grandparents Manuel Rodrigues and
Jancia Joaquina, maternal grandparents Jose Francisco and Francisca Thomasia
Born 25 Oct 1830 and baptized at home because of danger of death by the midwife
Ignacia Resendes (?) God parents are Jose Francisco and Francisco Thomasia.

For the past almost five years I've been searching. I can't mentally move
forward with the rest of my tree until I resolve this mystery. Tonight, I
found a baptismal record that might be the link. I ask for the groups help in
translating it. Record weblink: 0008

. Hopefully, this is the one.

I have a photo of the ancestor. Written on the back was the name Mary Isabel
Rodrigues Silva Nichols. On her death certificate it states she was 70 years
and 9 days old when she died Nov 4, 1901. The puts her birth October 26, 1831.
I believe the record I've found is from 1830 but the Month and day are
correct. I'd like to hear what others think if this is the correct baptismal
record.
