Thanks for that Gavin, answers my question pretty succinctly!

Is local news archived at all?

You be already aware of this but the BBC proposed a local video service last
year. The proposal was rejected by the Trust following public consultation.
One of the key concerns was about the ‘adverse impact on the market’. You can
read a full explanation from the Trust here:

 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/our_work/pvt/local_video_proposal.shtml

So while there would be (minor) technical issues involved in delivering local
video on bbc.co.uk, they haven’t been explored because there isn’t a remit to
 provide the service.

MPEG Streamclip all the way. On non-encrypted DVDs you can rip and convert a

You'll also need the rather overpriced MPEG2 component from Apple, unless
you've got Final Cut Studio (which is bundled with it).

Of greater pertinence is the freedom of the device - more iStore lock-in, no

[backstage] Low-latency vision mixer

2009-12-08 Thread Jim Tonge
Hello all,

I have a question I'm hoping the collective backstage brain can answer...

I'm currently using a Tricaster Broadcast to vision mix three live camera
feeds, play out VT and record to disk (including audio from a mixing desk). I
love it for being an all-in-one solution (and the keying and streaming
functionality is great, if currently unused), however it also needs output a
live feed of the mix to two plasmas and a projector.

Its latency is AWFUL, and very noticeable when trying to vision mix bands - lip
sync is way out. I've used an Edirol V8 and this, being a hardware mixer, has
very low latency. It's a right pig to set up a similar solution to the
Tricaster though with the V8.

So, onto my question: any suggestions of kit / solutions to remedy the issue?

Thanks,

Jim

having a really weird issue with Firefox where it appends Pr to the
last two letters of any search query at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blast/

'Liverpool' would end up as 'LiverpoPr'

It only happens in one user account (unfortunately the account that
took the most configuration and has a user-tied Ableton Live licence),
and only happens under Firefox. I've tried deleting cookies and
history, user prefs files, updating, completely uninstalling and
reinstalling FF with no luck.

Could anyone shed any light on this infuriating issue before I resort

Hi Brian and Nico:

Thank you for your interest in the event -- and your feedback.

I appreciate both the value that backstagers would add to this

operate.

As you may be aware, BBC Future Media Technology kindly
underwrote and ran the event last year, and we were able to waive
any booking fee as a result. I had originally hoped we could at
least set aside a block of no cost tickets this year, but
unfortunately we couldn't carry this through due to lack of
sponsorship (recession, media sector crisis, blah, blah, blah).

That said, I am keen for backstagers to take part in the event and
we have created a Ł75 ticket just for people on this list. You can
use this at the Booking page:

or go directly to Eventbrite where the code will be pre-filled:

I hope this offer is sufficient to enable some list colleagues to
attend and look forward to you joining us on Friday.

Cheers Neil.

Ok, so a is appended to nothing, searching also searches nothing
(both search results pages show all content on the site). Two-
character strings are appended to Pr (giving no search results).

Yes it's only happening on the Blast site, and no it's not case-
sensitive (both EDINBURGH and edinburgh became appended in the
expected way).

The other two user accounts work completely normally, and, curiouser
still, if I control the Mac with Apple Remote Desktop and lock the
screen from the user, the problem disappears.

Re: [backstage] Iplayer the best video experience online?

2009-01-15 Thread Jim Tonge
Apologies for revisiting an old thread, and for the stream-of-
consciousness rant.

After the suggestion of comparing Hulu to iPlayer, I found a proxy
that lets me stream fast enough to watch Hulu. It's a great service,
and I particularly love the (actually rather obvious) ability to embed
videos. HBO content would make it King.

The clips they litter the site with merely serve to be rather
irritating when you're looking for an episode however, and having to
use a proxy makes it a PITA.

So, to the point: any plans to allow embedding of iPlayer content? Is
the service providing access to content, or driving traffic to
bbc.co.uk?

I realise this question is probably going to open up a huge can of
worms, so I'll add further impractical thoughts before the inevitable...

Allowing embedding of user-specified clips (ie marking an in- and out-
point) could be a nice way of allowing 'water cooler' moments to be
easily shared, promoting shows in exactly the way music companies have
failed to promote their artists in the current YouTube audio-removal
debacle.

Oh, while I'm on a roll, any plans for a Wii/PS3-friendly interface à
la Youtube for Television?

Thoughts?

cheers,

personally, still haven't managed to get hulu working - please feel
free to recommend a proxy/other method. reckon i'd use it a lot though.

Joost lost my interest (and IMHO damaged their brand) with poor
content and standalone player - haven't bothered with the in-browser
version yet.

ITV made a strange choice in using Silverlight - works OK on my PC but
still crashes my Mac browsers. They just don't have the content though.

iPlayer is great on the Wii if you use WiiPlayer to sort out the
interface, fantastic through a browser, kind of pointless on an iPhone
without access over 3G (though the recently-discovered TV-out
framework could make for a useful native application). It'd be nice to
access it through an Xbox 360 (a la netflix). DRM and Kontiki prevent
me using DL content (ditto 4OD - i'd rather use, gasp, bittorrent).

My PS3 toting-friend is overjoyed with iPlayer on his telly, whilst
another with Virgin Media never uses it.

Hulu notwithstanding, I think iPlayer's easily the best experience for
professionally-produced content, and the ease and speed of use makes
me choose it over the illegal method mentioned above every time.

that the VPC-HD1000 still wasn't able to live up to its claims. On the
upside, reviewers found the design to be much improved, and the Full
HD recording abilities were drooled over as well. Still, the crew
couldn't help but be disappointed in the paltry four-megapixel CMOS
sensor, and while it did perform better than its predecessors as a
camcorder, the optical zoom was tagged as slow, colors seemed
slightly oversaturated and you'll still need plenty of light in
order to get halfway decent results. Furthermore, it was noted that
quick changes in scenery caused noticeable pixilation, and shooting in
low-light introduced a lot of grain. Overall, the HD1000 wasn't
totally slammed nor lifted up on a pedestal, but we'd probably hold
off on this unless you're cool with a jack of two trades, but master
of neither.

Mind you, this is from Engadget, who get nice stuff given to them
gratis on daily basis...

IMHO, plus points for the Sony include no-light nightshot for your
Blair Witch-style fun, and a (albeit low-rent) Carl Zeiss lens. The
audio jack is the main selling point for me though.

...the GOP length will affect the ability to edit the output.

I've never really understood GOP (I know it's to do with interlacing,
right?) - could you point me in the direction of a clear explanation
please?

Thanks.

Re: [backstage] HD Videocamera advice please...

2008-09-29 Thread Jim Tonge
Got a lower version of the Sony HDR-HC9E at work - last year's model.
Pretty good for a Handycam: CMOS sensor, audio in. 'Spose it depends
if you want DV/HDV or flash cards. For the price I'd probably go with
DV tape though.

Got 'em at Amazon for £645, but try Visual Impact Northern - their
sales guy Rob usually sorts me out with a really good price. Good luck.

Hi everyone, wondering if I can ask your advice.
I have been interested in getting myself either a new lens for my
Canon 350D or an HD video camera for some time, and thought it's
time to get one or the other in the next month or two. Not looking
for a pro-sumer camera, because it's out of price range and too big
- something hand-held. Around £550, maybe 650 if the features or
quality gains are unmissable.

Have looked at these:
Panasonic HDC HS9 [1], with hard disk, small form factor and 3CCDs.
Unsure if 3CCDs in this case is a gimmick because they're so small.
I'm not a fan of interpolation but with the money, I don't expect
full 1080 from all sensors :). No focus ring..
Panasonic HDC SD100 [2], as above, no hard disk, focus ring (good
feature for me), cheaper. But have to buy the massive SD card.
Really quick startup time.

Also looked at a canon with one full sensor rather than 3CCDs...

So any thoughts? What have you used? I'd like to hear any
suggestions or comments.

Many thanks, Matt

Never had any problems with ours: try using better quality tapes and
striping them first (I always do it but videophiles disagree on this).

Indeed. Perhaps I overestimated Google's desire to have mass adoption.
Maybe they're playing safe til they have a solid platform - I know my
opinion of Apple has been dented by buggy 2.0 software and
questionable app acceptance practices.

Don't get me wrong for backstage and the community of developers,
geeks, hackers, etc. Its going to be great to have a phone which is
open enough to modify and change but for consumers what's the big

As Jim Tonge pointed out its all about marketing and google are not

Anyway we'll find out real soon. I'm looking forward to dual booting

Ok, I see what you mean.

Although:

- Web n Walk (it's on T-Mobile, right?) is £5 a month for unlimited
internet.

- Google is a brand non-geeks trust - if they market it with Google
search, Gmail, YouTube and Maps they're laughing. As Apple rightly
surmised, people do want the lighter side of geek functionality, just
not the headache of getting it to work.

I think most phones can do what the iPhone does anyway - they just
make it so difficult people don't bother. My sister wanted an iPhone
on the strength of its Facebook webapp alone, until I pointed out she
could have similar access with her 3G-enabled Sony Ericsson and Opera
mini.

I guess my point is that it's down to how well it works and how well
they market it, natch.

Unlike Apple, there won't be any special data plans or special price

Hello, I'm new here.

PicLens is great for Google image searches and, to be honest, not much
else. Been using it for about a month, and after the initial wow
factor the novelty quickly wears off. As you say, the interface is a
little idiosyncratic. Still, respect to the developers, it's a slick
plugin.

PicLens Lite is a decent, free Flash gallery though if you want to
impress [easily impressed] site visitors.
