Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Feature Request: Make Disc Number a Selection Criterium
While at first I couldn't figure this one out, I then realised "oh, yeah!" I have a number of multi disc releases where I want to only play the first disc (rarely others) like remasters that include a bonus disc of remixes or early recordings/outtakes and some dance music where disc 1 is "originals" and disc 2 the "ambient" versions etc. Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Given the lack of time - I know how that feels - making changes to the sources to make it easier for other to work on it would be good. The historical dependencies on customised Perl modules and the hacky CPAN builds is potentially a good place to start. I am not sure who better understands the reasons for some of the hacks and with modern hardware and newer Perl and CPAN it may be more and more feasible to throw away many of these? If we can use more and more vanilla dependencies then the risk of tripping over special cases when looking at the core code is minimised? Can you try to play via SPDIF/coax to the DAC and see if it's different - try to eliminate the USB as the potential issue? As a non-DSD aside, I do find that FLAC 5.1 files play fine in stereo in LMS - and they sounds fine as stereo. There must be a mapping as part of the standard. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS 7.9 and DSD
Well, after much scratching of head and finding out which SACDs were 2 channel only, I see that LMS + DSDplay ignore or otherwise don't scan non 2.0 DSF files, so the above question about DoP is not important. This is a very long thread and while I have scanned it I may missed the answer, sorry. I now have SACD rip capabilities (yay) and want to see if it's feasible to play multichannel .dsf files via my Touch into my Denon amp. For this I think I need DoP, but it's not an option in my LMS settings (DSDPlay just says "DSDPlayer will transcode DSD to PCM for this player. Use the settings below to tune resampling parameters.") Is this not possible on SPDI/F linked players or just the normal / real Squeezeboxes? Ta. Currently installing over a nightly from about two weeks ago, Windows 10 Lenovo Yoga 300 laptop (2GB RAM, 32GB MMC storage with a ton of external USB3 HDDs). Got an access error during install - I guess the old processes hadn't quite died - retry worked. Not seen that before, but might just be load. Serving 2x Touch, 1x Boom locally and 1x Classic 3 remotely. Local library is music only, 40,000 tracks almost all FLACs ripped from my own CDs. Will report any issues here later. It may be the ABI or it may simply be my not understanding of how to bootstrap an install. I let it run, edited the logging conf manually and ran the scanner manually and that was enough. I suspect if the perl modules are rebuilt using the Strawberry Perl tool chain instead of Active Perl one (which is how I assume it's done?) it may simply work. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner can't see symbols?
I ended up using Strawberry Perl, which works sort-of. Certainly enough to reproduce the problem. I'm looking now and it appears to be in the File::Next module itself which is 1.06 but the current 1.12 makes no difference. I have not yet instrumented the module, while I will probably do outside LMS. I did find this blog post though, which may explain things: https://circulosmeos.wordpress.com/2012/09/15/windows-dir-command-unicode-file-names-and-perl/ Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105502 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner can't see symbols?
I renamed the directory "Sign O' The Times" and did a rescan. Ironically it found it fine and the tags in the FLAC files resulted in the album name containing the peace symbol. Put the symbol back, rescanned and it's gone again. My concern is NOT the renaming of one directory but how many other directories I may have with odd characters (I know of at least one with a "mu", as in "mu"zik) and the same for others on Windows. Like I said, this wasn';t an issue on my old Linux LMS install. Looking at code, but it's not so easy to hack "in place" on Windows. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner can't see symbols?
I've tried to understand the code; On Windows LMS uses Async.pm, not AIO.pm. The only bit of the code that appears that it could silently skip over a directory is folderFilter() / fileFilter() in https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/blob/public/7.9/Slim/Utils/Misc.pm, and based on the tests I have verified that there is no significant file ACL or oth erproperty that could cause this. I am going to test to "prove" it's simply the name / special character by renaming, scanning, checking, re-rename back and rescan to see if the behaviour is actually just based on the dir name. Back soon. I was running on Linux for ages, keeping up with 7.9 nightlies occassionally and recently moved to Windows 10 nightlies. Updated today just to be sure, ran a full scan and, in light of his recent sad passing, was looking to play some Prince. Can't find Sign o' the times; Looking closer, the peace/CND symbol appears to be the problem: > Sign The Times I would prefer not to change the directory name, especially as it used to work (from what I can recall). Is this a known issue or my config problem or just a Windows thing? I have browsed the scanner.log and no trace of that directory even being accessed. I have removed my playlists as they had crap in them anyway and running a fresh full scan so the log is minimal. I can send it if it helps. To be honest I have not had many problems but I will happily give this a spin at some point during the week - I'm at home on cat-ernity leave :) -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85469 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Album Artist/(Track) Artist
Album Artist can be used quite well with Compilations to group albums by the creator/arranger/mix artist. Typically this could be for the DJ whose series the compilation is from etc. I think, from looking back at this thread, there is the usual clique-y opinions of those who only believe that their chosen kinds of music deserve the attention of the developers, be that classical, electronic/dance, jazz etc. One of the great strengths of the Slim/Squeeze products and software is the configurability. Some of this has been lost in the latest generation of products and I think that's what we should be asking for rather than trying to get specific personal preferences hardwired. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75308 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

[SlimDevices: Beta] inotify and ReadyNAS do not play nice
It's been a while since I had time to play with 7.6 on my ReadyNAS NV+ What I found, apart from ICU .dat file issue - fixed in another thread - is that the CPU rockets to 98%+ on almost any operation after a clean install. The problem appears to be one of inotify. Turning it off under Advanced / Performance / Auto detect changes makes the CPU usage drop to a much more reasonable 3-5%. I have also hacked in an ANALYZE into the end of the scanner cleanup() call, so I don't know how much effect that in turn may have on the sqlite queries. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83950 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] inotify and ReadyNAS do not play nice
On the DB ANALYZE thing, my guess as to where to put it obviously didn't work. I shut the server down, manually ran ANALYZE using sqlite3 command against all three .db files in the cache dir and the CPU usage is now always low, including track start times. No more stutters and rebuffering. Fingers crossed. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83950 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Repeatly serverstatusQuery heavily used CPU
I don't know enough about MySQL but I know that the sqlite planner uses the data from analyze quite intensively. If you've just created a large dataset then you really need to let the planner know how effective and index search is via a table scan... -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81733 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Repeatly serverstatusQuery heavily used CPU
Interesting. I had problems with CPU on my ReadyNAS NV+ when trying 7.6 a while back. I never though to analyze the sqlite DB or check if it was after the scan. When I get a chance I may well try this. Nice catch. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81733 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Nightly Excessive CPU (ReadyNAS NV+)
Any update on this issue ? I am hesitant to try 7.6 as it took me an age to recover from downgrading and the associated rebuilds. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79663 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Nightly Excessive CPU (ReadyNAS NV+)
No progress, but maybe tonight. I noticed 7.5.1 released this morning and then wasted an inordinate amount of time fixing my own screw-ups where I had disabled mysql etc. in order to prove a point with 7.6 at some point :) Yes, the CPU is rather slow - but it's what we have and it did work much better before... -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79663 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Nightly Excessive CPU (ReadyNAS NV+)
I have done some more rigorous testing tonight and it's pretty clear to me, all other things being equal, that 7.6 on an NV+ uses much more CPU especially when playing a 24/96 flac, but in general. The attached PDF shows the difference. I tried to sync/normalise the start times in the PDF so that the rough actions are as follows: 0 seconds - recording CPU 60 seconds - start playing Fleetwood Mac / Rumours track 1 @ 44.1/16 230 seconds - continue into next track 300 seconds - start playing Fleetwood Mac / Rumours track 1 @ 96/24 ... The ZIP contains the output of top -b -d 1 -p PID for the periods of testing. [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Nightly Excessive CPU (ReadyNAS NV+)
Been trying a number of recent 7.6 nightlies on my ReadyNAS NV+ to try to address various teething issues with my new Touch - and just to play with the bleeding edge, of course. Bottom line is that the CPU usage is much higher while playing esp to the Touch and most especially with 24/96 flac files. With my SB3 (which has moved into the TV room) 7.6 seems OK and the menu navigation is generally speaking, fine. With the Touch and the Radio (so, commonality is Squeezeplay) the navigation and loading of Artists/Albums etc. is very slow. When playing - or rather trying to play - 24/96 flacs on the Touch the CPU on the server will go to 98-100% and stay there and the Touch rebuffers continually. The profile on non-24/96 flacs was a high period for a few seconds of playback and/or menu navigation and then drops to 5-10% thereafter. Not very familiar with the code layout so before I dive in I though I would ask if the nightlies - esp 7.6 as the last 7.5.1 I tries was OK apart from not doing SQLite for scanning - carry around extra debug or logging that would normally be disabled in a release ? I tried a variety of command line options in /etc/default/squeezecenter to see if they helped but nothing. No other processes running, no transcoding etc. I tried --nodebuglog and --noinfolog in case they helped. No change. Anywhere I can look ? Anything I should do to get more useful data ? While the ReadyNAS NV+ is underpowered, 7.5 was on the whole fine. -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79663 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Nightly Excessive CPU (ReadyNAS NV+)
I may try to be more rigourous and apply a 7.5.1 install again and measure - but it went from 7.5 with the start-up stutter on 24/96 flacs to 7.5.1 a little better to 7.6 broken. That's when I started looking at the server rather than the Touch. Any suggestions / hints as to possibly tracing performance (--perfmon is very sparsly described in the usage message and like I said, I don't know the code - yet). PS Also the very long startup time (about 2 CPU minutes) - it that all the perl code and modules being compiled or is there something else prior to the HTTP interface being started ? -- Peter Galbavy Peter Galbavy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79663 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
