[Ontbirds] Barn Owl downtown Kingston!
Hello, It's my first post here. I return to Quebec from my trip to Pointe-Pelee, and I stopped to Kingston to sleep. At 10:15 PM, I go out of a supermarket, and I saw flying over the parking lot, and maybe land on the roof of the building, a Barn Owl!!! Directly downtown! ...Before to give more information, I would like to know if it's correct to write it in this mailinglist? Sometimes, when it's a "sensitive bird", and "maybe" nesting, it's not recommended, but I don't know in this case, and I don't know what is your policy about that... I was VERY impressed! ...I thought it was a gull... and to do a joke, I said to my girlfriend: "Look! A Snowy Owl!" She start to laught but we stopped to laught in the same time when we realized that it was a Strigidae! (Sorry! English is not my first language...) [Ontbirds] Update on Eurasian Tree Sparrow at Presqu'ile.
After re-appearing at the address below at noon today for a brief (<30 seconds) view in plain sight, the "sparrow" spent much of the afternoon high in a tall deciduous tree at 182 Bayshore Road, where it could be seen with patience from 186 Bayshore Road. It is best to view the bird from the lake side of the latter property to which access may be gained by walking around the left side of the house. Ask for directions at the gate of Presqu'ile Park, which can be located by following the blue signs from Brighton. -- Fred Helleiner 186 Bayshore Road Brighton, Ontario K0K 1H0 613-475-5309 If visiting, access via Presqu'ile Provincial Park ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Point Pelee NP Migration Report - May 15th 2018
Good morning birders! We have had a busy start to the day with a significant influx of migrants, and bird activity is high and widespread. A WORM-EATING WARBLER was found singing and moving north along the Tip road from the halfway tram stop early this morning, and a probable second individual was heard just north of the Sparrow Field. A strong reverse movement of birds was observed off the Tip this morning, including INDIGO BUNTINGs, SCARLET TANAGERs, and both orioles. A RED-THROATED LOON was also seen off the Tip. A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen at the Sparrow Field. ACADIAN FLYCATCHERs have been seen and heard on the Tilden Woods Trail as well as behind the Visitor Centre. At least 25 species of warbler have been reported, including both male and female HOODED WARBLERs on the Woodland Nature Trail and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen briefly in Post Woods. Considerable numbers of mid-late season species such as YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, WILSON'S, CANADA, BLACKPOLL, and MOURNING WARBLERS, and GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH have been reported from the Tip and Tilden Woods Trail. Multiple BLACK-BILLED and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS have been spotted at the Tip, along Tilden Woods Trail, on the Woodland Nature Trail, at the Cactus Field, and near the Visitor Centre. Overall bird activity is high both at the Tip and along the southern trails, as well as right around the Visitor Centre. We expect the trails further north to also be quite productive, as reports continue to come in from other areas. It is already shaping up to be an exceptional day to be out birding in the park! [Ontbirds] Major migrant fallout in Thickson's Woods this morning.
Hi everyone, Thunderstorms in the very early morning resulted in the first fallout of the spring. Many individuals of multiple warbler, flycatcher, vireo and thrush species present. A male Hooded Warbler was singing earlier. Birds seem to be staying in the woods, so an afternoon visit could prove productive. Directions to Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve To get to Thickson's Woods, Exit from #401 to Thickson Rd. S. Continue south about 1.5 kilometres to the Waterfront Trail, where you will see a large green sign on your left that says "Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve". Park along the east side of Thickson Road north of the Waterfront Trail, and walk east along the Waterfront Trail about 200 metres to where a pathway enters the woods on your right. Trails lead through the woods with two extending to the roadway on the south side of the woods along the shore of Lake Ontario. The roadways in the woods are the property of Thickson's Woods Land Trust. Birders are welcome to walk along the roadways, but please park outside the gate. Exceptions are made for handicapped folks who are unable to walk about. The entrance to the meadow portion of the reserve is on the north side of the Waterfront Trail opposite the entrance to the woods. The Waterfront Trail east of Thickson Road is now gated, so no motorized vehicles can access it. Please don't stand in the middle of the Waterfront Trail while birding, as you may endanger cyclists and in-line skaters, as well as yourself. Re: [Ontbirds] Ruff - Minesing - new locale
At 9:20 am, the Ruff was about 1.5 km farther up McKinnon Rd (just before the closed road off that runs off McKinnon to the left/west). The many shorebirds there, including the Ruff, were only briefly in the open water there, but could be observed (with patience) foraging in the mud between rows of corn stubble on the west side of the road. good birding, Martin Daly Had anyone mentioned that he has a golden "mane" atop his black ruff? It was his golden crown that caught my eye.
