Hi,

I found windows 7 hard to get used to at first. What helped me was a book I
bought from National Braille Press. Yes, the control panel in windows 7 is
very different from the one in XP.

Sure Mike, these things are just a pain to work with at times. I am still
trying to adapt to my new Windows 7 PC. Catching up fast with it's features
and where to find what on it.

In Windows 7 the add and remove programs is totally different compared to XP
actually the whole control panel looks extremely different. I hear it gets
even more complicated in Windows 8. Any reviews out there?

This is a new offering from Microsoft. It is a virtual
office. You can share, edit and access all your groove files and folders
from any computer regardless of it being your computer or any network.

If you wish to know more about it you can visit:

I did not find it that exciting or of any use to me so I uninstalled it. If

Hi, Mike,

These are great instructions. I use the send to method when I'm sending
songs to a friend of mine in Maine. I've sent him quite a few songs using
this method. That's the easiest method for me to use when sending

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Send To, How To Add Folders / Places To It

Every computer user has one specific place or folder in windows where
he / she likes to dump all of his / her files and folders. It can be
My Documents
folder, C drive, D drive, Desktop or anywhere in Windows. In order to
put your files and folder at your favourite place, each time you have
to follow either of these two classic methods :

Note: I know all of you know these basic things, but their is
something else which i want to tell you all. Just keep reading it

First Method
1. Select your file or folder which you want to move or copy
2. Right click to display a context menu
3. Click “Copy” or Cut
4. Go to the location where you want to put your file or folder
5. Right click to display a context menu
6. Click “Paste”

Second Method
1. Select your file or folder which you want to move or copy
2. Press CTRL + C to copy or CTRL + X to cut (move)
3. Go to the location where you want to put your file or folder
4. Press CTRL + V to paste it

Following the above steps looks easy but when there is a way to speed up
the whole process, than why not use that option.

Whenever you right click any file or folder, (you noticed or not)
their is an option of Send To in the context menu. The shortcut key
for it after pressing the application key is letter, N. By default, there
are some limited options available in that menu, but you can add your own
folder or location over there and than can easily copy any file or folder to
your favorite folder or location instantly. But before moving ahead, let's
see what the
default options available in the Send To menu are.

Default Options In The Send To Menu

Right click any file or a folder and select the Send To option from
the menu. For example, at one of my PC these are the options available
in the Send To menu.

Let me tell you briefly about the most common options of the Send To menu :

Compressed (zipped) Folder : Clicking this option will quickly creates
a compressed file (Zip file) and copies the selected files or folders
to it.

Desktop (create shortcut) : Clicking this option will create a
shortcut of your file or folder on the desktop.

My Documents or Documents : Clicking this option will create a Copy of
the selected file or folder to the Documents folder.

Fax Recipient : Clicking this option will allows you to send the file
as a fax via the Windows Fax and Scan tool. (you need to configure
windows to work
like that)

Mail Recipient : Clicking this option will allows you to easily attach
a file to an e-mail message. (It will only work if you have installed
any email
client. For e.g. Ms-Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.)

CD/DVD RW drive : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the
selected file or folder to the CD/DVD drive, so that you can burn your
documents easily
on the CD/DVD.

USB drive : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the selected
file or folder to the USB drive (if it's already plugged into your
computer)

3 1/2 Floppy (A:) : Clicking this option will create a Copy of the
selected file or folder to the floppy drive (if you have that in your
computer)

How To Add Any Folder In The Send To Menu

After knowing much about the Send To menu, now let's see how you can
add your favorite folder in it. By doing that you can easily copy your
files / folders
by simply right clicking it.

Note: You can also
add Copy To or Move To option in your right click menu,
but I recommend that method only to those people who know what they are
doing.

Go to the location of your favorite folder, Right Click it, click
Send To and select Desktop (create shortcut)

It will instantly create a shortcut on the desktop of your folder.

Now go to your Desktop and Right click the Shortcut folder and select
Rename.

Just remove the word Shortcut from it or Rename it whatever you want.

In Win XP

1. Click Start Menu

2. Click RUN

3. Type, shell:sendto, and click enter.

In Win 7

1. Click Start Menu.

2. Type, shell:sendto, in the search box and press Enter.

After using this command in WinXP and Win 7, you will see a window that will
pop-up with some icons or shortcuts.

Now copy that folder shortcut from the Desktop (which you created
before) and paste it in this Send To folder.

That's it. Right click any file and folder, click Send To and you will
see your favorite folder name or location in the menu as well.

Last Words

The Send To option has been available in all the version of Windows for a
long
time, but not many people are able to utilize it at its potential. By
following these steps, you can add as

The mobile version of Facebook is fairly easy to use. My main problem
is with Ebay. I did a system restore last night, but that didn't help
matters. I found that I am able to choose location and buy it now,
even though they're the strange half links half check boxes. But
there's still no way for me to sort by price, nor can I enter minimum
and maximum price. Those fields simply aren't there. I tried to see
if there was a link to return the classic look, or something of that
nature, but none existed. This was with Firefox. It's also worth
noting that, when Internet Explorer still showed the normal site, I
still couldn't purchase anything with it. Every time I would attempt
to do so, the page would freeze on me. Since I can't copy or edit the
url there, I was forced to copy the entire page of the item into
Notepad, then return to Firefox, go to Ebay and search by item number
so that I could buy it.

As a sidenote, I ran a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials.
I can't tell if it found anything, since it's not really accessible,
and I just set it to quarantine and remove any moderate to serious
threats. But it didn't change the behaviour of Ebay.

so we unplug the tower and then start it up again and then it goes into
safe mode sometimes or it will just start up normal again and everything
works fine until the next time I start it up again.
but when it does start in safe mode it just says from what I understand my
sited person telling me to make sure things are plugged in correctly.
 and they are.
so what ever is going wrong I am puzzeled.

 Hi Anna,

I think you will need someone sighted to help you. It sounds like there
is
a message on the screen that you will need to have read to you. In order
for anyone to help we will need to know what this message is reporting.
If
you can get someone to write it down or if you can record the message
while
they're reading it then, type the message into an email send it to the
list, it would help immensely. It sounds like the computer is booting
into
safe mode because something needs to be addressed Jaws won't work in
safe
 mode.
 Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] just took myself off of the web IE announce list

2012-11-27 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, Angela,

I don't blame you if you just give up on the web IE list. I got fed up so I
just took myself off. Even when I was supposedly on it, I never got any new
update emails so I just took myself off of the list.

WebbIE is a web browser for blind and visually-impaired people, especially
those using screen readers, used since 2001 all over the world. It comes
with the Accessible programs, letting you access news and audio on the
Internet in a simple and accessible way, allowing you to use podcasts,
listen to the radio and read RSS and news with your screen reader or other
access solution. Together they provide a way to access websites and other
great things online - and they are all free.

Rosemarie, One of the easiest ways to find that function with Windows 7
Is by using your Search function.

Just press the Windows key to open the Search field.
Begin typing with the word disk. The first option will be Disk Cleanup.
So press the spacebar after disk and continue typing with the D in
Defragmenter.
You probably won't get past that letter before the system brings up exactly
what you want.
Just press enter on that choice and the dialog opens.

unless all the windows are popping up and one of them is making the
keystroke go off kilter

I usually permanently close everything except the main and playlist
windows.

also does NVDA work with the same hotkeys as jaws, I have never tried it so
don't know.

yeah, having read your other recent posts now, I suspect you must have a
new-ish version, and in any case, ogg has been supported for a while...

The only other thing I can suggest is that you write in to the tech forum on
the winamp site. It's a bit of a pain though; you have to be very specific
about your system and setup and everything. I wrote in once and never got a
response, probably because I didn't give them enough info. Luckily I was
able to solve the problem on my own eventually...

Hi,

I was a little girl during the 1950's too and things were made so much
better than they are now. I think if this computer dies, I'll probably
switch to a Mac. The very first computer I learned to work was an Apple II

I learned before just because there are upgrades. I lived through the
1950's my friend, and believe me they weren't that bad. At least then
things were built to last, and once a thing was learned such as the skills
necessary to use the writing frame, as a single example, one didn't have to

rotary telephone from the 1960's on one of my land line extensions whose
sound quality is superior to the $10 disposable electronic crap that passes
for a telephone these days. And if you thought Windows Vista was a disaster,
it looks like Windows 8 could turn out to be an even bigger nightmare for
MS. Yesterday, the MS executive who was largely responsible for the
development of Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 announced his resignation, no
doubt to get out before the you know what hits the fan. Win 8 has received
a lukewarm reception by many business users who are apparently in no great
rush to upgrade, and compatibility problems with some older programs have

Hi Rosemari, this is something I found on the internet.

Over a period of time you tend to install and uninstall third-party Media
Players like VLC, GOM, AVS, Power DVD, etc. When you install these
third-party
software, each of this program take their own file associations as default
player. Good ones usually gives you a choice whether to associate all media
file
extensions to it or not while installing the program. But having said that,
not
all programs gives you a choice. They automatically take file associations
and
you end up with messed up file types for your Media playing needs. If you
love
Windows Media Player and would like to keep file associations with it, go
ahead
and follow these steps to reset all file associations with Windows Media
Player
in your Windows 7 PC.
1. Click Start- All Programs- Default Programs.
2. In the Default Programs dialog box, click on link Set your default
programs.

3. In the list of programs, select Windows Media Player.
4. Then click on Set this program as default.

5. Click on OK to save the settings. This will restore all the file
associations. Which means all your video and audio files will play with
Windows
Media Player by default.
In Step 4, you have choice to choose selected file type to play as default
with
Windows Media Player. You need to click on Choose defaults for this
program
and then select file types that you want to associate with Windows Media
Player.

2012-11-14 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, Randy,

One of the differences is that the start menu has a search box. What you do
to get into a program if you don't have that shortcut on your desktop is hit
your start menu and type the name of the program you want in the search box
and hit enter on it. For instance, if I want to do some basic word
processing in wordpad, I type wordpad without the quotes in the search box
and hit enter on it. Wordpad comes up. It's really not too much different
than XP.

Hope this helps somewhat.

I hear that windows xp will not be supported soon. is it possible for
me to upgrade to say, windows 7? I hear it's not that different than xp.

1. Click Start— All Programs— Default Programs.
2. In the Default Programs dialog box, click on link “Set your default
programs”.

3. In the list of programs, select “Windows Media Player”.
4. Then click on “Set this program as default”.

5. Click on “OK” to save the settings. This will restore all the file
associations. Which means all your video and audio files will play with
Windows
Media Player by default.
In Step 4, you have choice to choose selected file type to play as default
with
Windows Media Player. You need to click on “Choose defaults for this
program”
and then select file types that you want to associate with Windows Media
Player.

I tried opening the oldies station but it said something about a .pls file.
How do I get rid of it? If I can get rid of this file, I think I'll have the

[Blind-Computing] an issue with web IE

Hi, everyone,

The problem is that I try to play a youtube video and web IE tells me that I

some sites that aren’t accessible otherwise.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

got this computer brand-new last year and it has internet explorer 8 on it.
What could be the reason I’m getting these update messages? I do like web IE
for some sites that aren’t accessible otherwise.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Rosemarie

I’m running windows 7 64-bit system if that would help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Line Spacing in Word 2010

2012-10-21 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi,

I think control 1 on the keyboard is for single-spacing and control 2 is for
double-spacing. I'm not sure if that's correct for word 2010 but that's what
my word 2007 book says.

Hope this helps.
