Re: [Blind-Computing] An Accessible YouTube for the Visually Impaired

2011-09-21 Thread Silly Goose
I really like this site but for the last 4 days I have gone to it, done
searches, and watched a couple of videos before it starts showing server
errors and no longer works. Once I watched about 5 before it started the
server errors and today it did it on the second one. Has this happened to
anyone else? If it makes any difference I am using Jaws 11 on a Windows 7
64 bit computer. Using IE8.

I came across this from another list, don't remember if it has been posted
here before.
At any rate, it works extremely well with Jaws 6.2 and IE 8 on my Xp
machine.

Re: [Blind-Computing] How To Download Your Information From Facebook

2010-10-27 Thread Silly Goose
Just thought I would let people know that this does not work for blind
users. I tried it and it got the stuff ready to download and then I had to
get through the security checks. The security check was to name people in
photos. I could not even get my husband to do this for me since many of my
friends are people he has never seen. So I could not identify the people and
had to cancel the download. And the pictures were not pictures that I had
been tagged in, they seemed to be random shots from friends profile pages.
And some of my friends are people I only know online and could not even
describe.

How To Download Your Information From Facebook

Article Source:

Lifehacker

http://lifehacker.com/5657317/

One feature strangely absent from Facebook has always been the ability to
download your pictures, videos, messages, and other information to your
hard

drive. Now, with a few clicks, your updates can be easily saved.

All you need to do is head to Account, Account Settings, then to Download
Your Information.

From there, you can download a zip file containing all your profile
information, including your photos, wall posts, messages, videos, friend
lists, and other content.

If you unzip the file, you can actually view a simple HTML page of your
profile, with simple links to all of these things. It doesn't look like
there's currently any way to re-import that information back to Facebook.

Yes, I am using it just fine. The main thing I notice is that I have to tab
through quite a few more buttons when going from a source playlist to the
actual list where I copy and paste. Also, when I am putting items on the
iPod it gets very slow in saying the button names when I tab through. But
if I shift tab away from the iTunes and do something else the Jaws works
normally.

Yes, I did install Eudora (the one recommended on this list) on my Win 7 64

One nice thing about Eudora is that it is very easy to back up just by
copying the data folder. In Win 7 the data folder is located in the first
level of my Sherrie folder.

Re: [Blind-Computing] facing problems in windows 7

2009-12-19 Thread Silly Goose
I agree that Windows 7 has many difficult changes and if my new laptop did
not have the numberpad built in I might have given up and gone back to my XP
laptop. I have finally gotten used to the start menu and I agree that
the new control panel is the pits. Mostly I have to use the search box and
put in the name of the old control panel to see where it is hiding.
The hardest thing to deal with is the way folders are displayed. With my XP
laptop I never used Windows Explorer with the stupid tree view. I always
just stored everything in folders and navigated that way. Now you have to
tab many times to get to a list view but at least the first letter
navigation does work there. Previously I always moved files by using cut and
paste and that does work to some extent but sometimes when I go to delete a
file or folder that was previously moved or copied it will say that I can't
because the file can't be found. So especially in the Library folders I
resort to the Move to folder... and deal with the stupid tree view to
avoid losing the files.

I have made some progress with the email, however.

After much agonizing I finally got Windows Live Mail set so that it is
reasonably usable and almost as good as Outlook Express. I managed to import
all my old mail and address books and get it to do pretty much what I want
it to do. The main thing it lacks is first letter navigation but I sort of
work around that.
If anyone is interested I can try to write down how my settings are set and
how I use various folders to navigate and such.
By the way I did install the 7.whatever version of Eudora on my Win 7 64 bit
laptop and by replacing the Eudora data folder with my Eudora data folder
from my old laptop I was able to access all my saved mail. I used Eudora
for years until I started using Gmail as an alternate email and I could not
figure out how to add another personality or set up the Gmail configuration
on Eudora. The main thing I don't like about Eudora is that when it opens
an email all the headers show and it does not always start reading
automatically and when it does it can't always find the end of the headers
to know where to start.
The version with ads is free and works fine since with a screen reader you
never even know the ads are there and the junk filtering is unnecessary
since most providers scan the email anyway.
I did download the Thunderbird and sent a test message that went but
couldn't figure out intuitively what to do so I am not using it.
I would have chosen to try Outlook but the Office 2007 I have does not
include Outlook and since I am having pretty good luck with the WLM I don't
want to put out the money for Outlook at this time

I have a partial solution for the Control Panel! The crazy default view
is called Category view. Vista had a button to switch to Clasic view,
that allowed all of the Control Panels to be viewed like a folder and be
displayed in List view. In Windows 7, it is possible to list in something
like a folder view as well.

Go to the Control Panel. Press Control + E, to move focus to the search
box. Tab once to the Catagory button. Activate the control by pressing
Space. A context menu will appear! There will be a Large Icon and Small
Icon options as well as Category. Either of the icon views will provide
all of the familiar Control Panels in alphabetical order. First letter
navigation also works. List and Detail views are not available.
Strangely, pressing Tab on a Control Panel will move you to the next
Control Panel, so I am not sure what this actually looks like or what
Magic control type they are using.

Re: [Blind-Computing] folder list view and accessible firewall

2009-12-09 Thread Silly Goose
I am having problems with self extracting scripts not going to the right
place in Jaws 11 with Win 7 64 bit.
Specifically the Goldwave scripts did not go to the right place. Neither did
the Kitchen Sink games. And some other ones did not work, either.
Is there a way to put self extracting scripts where they belong and why
would it be different for Jaws 11?
I did solve the problem with the Kitchen Sink games by copying the installed
folder from my XP machine to the Win 7 one and I use shortcuts of the .exe
file for each game to start them.

Hello Ken and all. On your first question try this. check the list check
box in view. Then go into tools menu and then folder option. control tab
to the view tab. Hit enter on the apply to folders button. Then hit enter
on ok. This should do it. I haven't set this up in a while but think this
is what I remember doing. In the help it said that is how you set it up
for icon sizes so should be the same for this. Hope this helps. On your
second question as in reguard to scripts You can install them fairly easy.
Some have auto set up programs where it will install them in the correct
directory for you. They go into the enu folder in settings in your current
version of jaws. The FS site should have information on how to set this
up. If you like you can email me off list at mcare...@optonline.net for

Hi everyone,

I'll probably have more questions over the next few days. Setting up a
new computer.

I can't remember how to set it up so that all folders on the computer are
in a list view.

Also, I'm using Zone Alarm on my old computer; but it's not very blind

I know zone alarm has scripts, but I have no clue about scripts. Are
there scripts for zone alarm and how do you use them? I don't know the

know I am probably missing a lot by not having done it, but again, I just
haven't learned them and would need some help to figure them out.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is the My Dropbox folder still in your My Documents folder? I just access my

My only mistake was accidentally setting up a second account when hooking up

unlink an account and link another so I got them both on the same account.
The other account is still active and I could probably store things in it

I realized it was dead when the computer would not recognize the drive when
I plugged it in. Tried it on both computers and called tech support who sent
me to Device Manager or something to see if it was actually being recognized
but no luck.
The company had a service to get the info off the hard drive but it seemed
very expensive for the stuff I had on there. so I gave it up as a lost

a second one to back up the first.
When I plugged in the dead drive it would just spin and not be recognized

I will admit that I did not use the Safely remove hardware when removing the

It did not work. I never did get around to sending back the defective

Now, my goal is to be sure that everything is stored in at least two

to have died will allow some or all of its content to be gotten off of

it on it tries to spin up to its normal spinning velocity but on the way

Re: [Blind-Computing] is there a particular way to unplug a flash drive

2009-11-11 Thread Silly Goose
If Safely remove hardware does not appear in the Systems tray I discovered a
temporary fix.
Use Windows r to open the run dialog box and paste in the following
RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Then press enter and the Safely Remove Hardware window opens.

I just save the text in a document that can be opened and copied quickly if
the need arises.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] is there a particular way to unplug a flash drive

Hi list,
I have a flash drive, that I want to start using instead of relying on
floppy disks, which tend to be more fragile. As I understand it, I just plug
the flash drive into one of the USB ports on my computer. And it should show
up as drive E in the my computer list. Is that correct?
From what I understand, when using a USB external hard drive, you are
meant to select the safely remove hardware option from somewhere on the
computer before unplugging the external drive from the computer? Is this
correct? And where do I find that option for when I start using my external
drive? Do you have to follow the same procedure for unplugging a USB flash
drive? And are Flash drives and USB hard drives regarded as the same thing?
As I have a 500 gig external hard drive. And an only 1 gig flash drive.
Thanks Jason

[Blind-Computing] More Windows Live Mail questions and observations

2009-11-09 Thread Silly Goose
First, I am having two main problems with Windows Live Mail. . As far as I can
tell there is no first letter navigation of folders. For example I save many
emails in folders for future reference. Previously to move emails to specific
folders in OE I could just use control shift V and then choose a folder from
the list by first letter navigation which was very quick. Now, on my new
Windows 7 64 bit laptop running Jaws 11 and Windows Live Mail there is no
first letter navigation of the folder list. You have to tab several times and
then find the folder with the tree list which is very tedious. I don't think it
even remembers the last folder you sent an email to so it is the tree view
every time. And I have not discovered how to have the auto complete work when
adding the contacts sending email.
It is confusing in that it seems to put each separate account into its own
folder list with its own Inbox, Sent mail, etc. Sure would love a tutorial on
exactly how it is set up.

And it is very, very sluggish when moving through a list. I thought Windows 7
64 bit was supposed to be faster...but faster than what? It is much slower
than my Dell XP laptop. I may end up giving my husband the new Acer except
then I would have purchased Windows 11 ($240) for nothing since Jaws 9 works
great on my Dell..

There are some good points about WLM, however.
I was able to import my messages from OE. I just copied the message storage
file to the Windows 7 laptop and was able to navigate to that folder when
importing. It did put them in a separate list but at least they are there.
Secondly it is set up very much like OE. The message rules work the same way as
in OE as does the find message command.
When setting up accounts it was much easier. To add my Gmail I just had to put
in the address and password. Then I did not check to set it up manually and it
automatically configured it. It adds a folder called Gmail and one for my other
email and in these folders you can see the email that is stored online before
it is downloaded.
It seems to sync the mail so I think I am able to download the same mail to
both laptops.

Anyway, does anyone know about first letter navigation of folder lists?
I surely think this is a really important feature that is very necessary. Any
advice appreciated.

[Blind-Computing] simple way to burn a CD with WMP11 and XP

2009-08-22 Thread Silly Goose
I use iTunes for playing music but I prefer to use the regular CD burning
capability of the XP operating system which uses WMP 11.

I do keep my music in the My Music folder so it is easy to find. I just use WMP
11 when quickly checking out a song to see if I want to add it to my iTunes
library and for burning CD's.

Simple instructions for making music or data CD's with Windows XP and Windows
Media Player 11.

Select music or other audio files for your CD by highlighting one or more
files.and Then press applications key, choose Send to and choose CD drive D.
(You can also find Send to in the File menu.)

2. I usually put 19 or 20 songs for a regular music CD. If it is too big, it
will let you know.

3. Go to My Computer and open CD Drive d.

4. This folder should have the music you sent here. You can also just copy and
paste into this folder.

5. In the CD Drive D folder choose Burn these files to a CD from the file
menu.

6. This puts you into the Wizard in the CD title box. You can either use the
default title for the CD (the Current date) or change it to one of your choice.

Tab once to the checkbox for Close this window when burning is complete. The
default is checked. Then tab once more and click Next.

7. If you have not already placed a blank CD in the drive it will then prompt
you to do so at this point.

8. This screen allows you to choose music CD or data CD. Music CD is the
default so just choose the Next button.

9. It then throws you into Windows Media Player. I have version 11 so I just
press Alt S and the burn process begins. It is quiet at first so you might not
think it worked but after a minute or two you can hear the CD drive begin to
spin. The CD pops out when finished.

I burned a bunch of them yesterday so I sort of got in the groove and it was
easy.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Adobe flash player 10

2009-08-10 Thread Silly Goose
When confronted with web sites with lots of flash information I have been
resorting to the S A to Go screen reader and it can read quite a bit of the
flash content when Jaws does not see it at all. It is a bit of a pain to
have to stop and load the SA to go but it has been worth it several times.
It also does a decent job on Facebook. I like that it usually drops me in
the spot on the page with the relevant information I am seeking after I
click on a link.
Most of the keystrokes are the same although there are some I have not
learned yet I am liking the S A more all the time.
I wish Jaws would work on the flash content more.

Re: [Blind-Computing] What To Do When Your Hard Drive Crashes

2009-07-20 Thread Silly Goose
I just happen to have a recently dead external hard drive and gave this a
try this morning. The problem with my external drive was that the computer
would not recognize it even though it was getting power and spinning
inside the case. I am planning to return the hard drive since it is only 8
months old but all the books and backups stored on it will be gone for good.
So I put it in the freezer for 4 hours and then plugged it in and connected
it to the computer. It was sluggish about starting to spin but it did get
revved up and made the normal noise. But it still was not detectable by the
computer.
It is not a computer problem since my old external hard drive is functioning
well on the same computer. The old one is only 150 gb however, which is
barely enough to back up the laptop.
I will say I am frustrated with the Sea Gate one that died. I purchased it
on Black Friday and used it not only to back up but to hold the only copies
I had of many other files.
now they are gone. I guess I need an external drive to back up the external
drive.
So, anyway, the freezer thing was a waste of time. I am letting the hard
drive spin for a few hours since taking it out of the freezer caused
condensation on the outside and the inside as well I presume.
Hope this helps,
Sherrie Gosling

Hey Guys,

I received this message from a group list that I am a part of, and I wanted
some of you to read it
and see if this really works or not. I don't know what good it would do to
do what she said she
did, but maybe some of you can shed a little light on the subject. Here is
the message:

I'm sorry I haven't been able to post anything to this list for a few days,
but I had a major crash
of an external drive, which had all of my music collection on it, and I've
been working feverishly
to try and recover what I can from that drive the past few days.
Fortunately, I was able to recover
a lot, but the drive, itself, is shot. I wanted to share a tip with you all
that helped me save
most of my music collection that was on that drive. We put my damaged drive
in the freezer for a
couple of hours and then immediately took it out and hooked it up and within
minutes I was able to
copy things from it onto a safer drive. I ended up having to place my drive
in the freezer a couple
of times, just to be able to copy the data from it, but it did work, so if
you ever have a hard
drive or external drive crash, and you would like to try and get the data
from that drive, try
putting the drive in the freezer for a few hours and then immediately put it
back into your computer
or hook it up to your computer, and try and get off what you can, before it
totally goes. I have to
admit that when we first learned of this technique, we were really
skeptical, but this time it did
work for me. My husband works on computers and he learned this trick as
part of his tech training.

Re: [Blind-Computing] viewing all folders and files in XP

2009-06-26 Thread Silly Goose
Hi,
If you are trying to show the hidden folders in XP the following will work.
I like all my folders visible so I can back up certain ones.
Go to Control panels.
Choose folder options.
Control tab to the view tab.
Tab once to folder tree view. You may have to use right arrow to open the
tree view.
Arrow down through these changing them to suit your needs. There are two
for showing hidden folders.

Then tab to okay when you are finished.

Showing the hidden folders allows me to back up email and other folders in
the Documents and Settings folder.
You would want to be careful when opening any folders in the Documents and
Settings not to make any changes unless you know what you are doing

[Blind-Computing] Eliminating junk folder in OE

Hi,
I am using Jaws 9, Windows XP and I guess the latest version of OE.
How can I keep mail from going to the Junk folder? Several emails end up there
and I have no idea why or how to change it. My mail is washed through the ISP
and I never have a problem with spam and it is a bother to have to keep

I did check the Options under the Tools menu and did not notice anything that

Re: [Blind-Computing] Backing Up Files

2009-04-22 Thread Silly Goose
Hi,
I use Insoft to Document backup that I got as a Giveaway of the Day. It
works very well with Jaws and I was able to set it up so that it backs up
various folders each day at specific times. I even have it backing up the
folders for Outlook Express in the Documents and Settings folders and my
favorites folder located there as well.
The only problem I had at all is that it can't handle a really large size
folder, like bigger than 7 or 8 GB So I just divided my Document folder into
several groups of folders for it to back up.
Also, whenever I download a program from the Internet I save the original
set up files and a document explaining what it actually is and keep this in
a folder that gets backed up regularly. I have been through two crashes,
and believe me, it is much easier to re-install programs when you don't have
to try and remember where they came from. Now, my only problem would be
that several of my favorites were freebies from Giveaway of the Day and I
might have to purchase the best of these since the registration information
is only valid on the date it was posted.
My external hard drive is very worth the initial price I paid.
I am so paranoid that I keep my files that absolutely could not be replaced
like my spreadsheets of all the talking books I have read in the past 6
years and many other personal things on an 8 gb flash drive that I keep in
my purse since in the case of theft or fire I would lose the external drive
as well as the laptop.

[Blind-Computing] Forwarding problem in OE

2009-04-15 Thread Silly Goose
---
Outlook Express
I am switching from using Eudora to OE but when I try to forward certain
messages I get the following dialog box:---
One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found. When you send
this message these pictures will not be included. Are you sure you want to send
this message?
---
Yes No
---
What can I do so that forwarded messages are complete?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Firefox Update

2009-04-15 Thread Silly Goose
I think I am ready to take the plunge and try Firefox. Where would I go to
download it and various plug-ins? Mainly I am getting tired of lots of
coupon sites where I can't navigate and print the coupons and hope Firefox
might let Jaws access more than IE does.
Thanks in advance,
Sherrie Gosling

Re: [Blind-Computing] Putting headings into Word docs

2009-04-15 Thread Silly Goose
Thanks to both Rick and Jacob for the good information about adding
headings. Both methods work with Word 2003.

Now I can get on with the iTunes beginner tutorial I am working on. I
strongly feel that iTunes works well enough without putting out more money
on scripts and want to share my beginner experiences. If anyone knows of a
beginner tutorial that is not auditory please let me know and I won't waste
my time duplicating work. I personally prefer written tutorials since it is
easier to take notes for future reference. Auditory explanations are good
for an overview in my opinion, but I like step by step directions I can
follow at my own pace.
So thanks so much,
Sherrie

Hi Sherry,
You didn't say which version of Word you are using.
I'm using Word 2000, and I use the key combination of Alt + Control, plus
numbers 1 thru 4, for heading levels.
Example: Alt + Control + 1 = heading level 1.
Of course, at this point, you are not really working in a Word doc, but
rather an html document.

Hi,
Is there an easy way to designate headings in a Word doc so that when it is
saved in html one can navigate by the headings?
I looked at the From the keyboard tutorial but there was nothing about
adding or designating headings.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
