[BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem

2007-01-11 Thread brice mijares
Yesterday I was sitting in the garage when my wife came home, and when she
tried to open the garage door, the motor started working, but the door
wouldn't go up. So after telling her to stop trying to open the door
because something was wrong, I went back in there and check to make sure the
chain didn't jump off the sprocket, and the cable didn't come off the
pulley. Okay, I check both the sprocket and pulley, and both were okay.
Today, I'm going to look for a reset button, but doubt there is one. Has
anyone ever experienced this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? I
hate to have to call for a repair man to come out, these bastards cost to
damn much.

[BlindHandyMan] align drawer slides

2007-01-11 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi Dale,
Those slides sound pretty neat.
The last time I did anything like that I first used double sided tape to
hold the slide in place. I have a self centering punch that I was then able
to correctly place the screw.
This punch is spring loaded and was about $7.00. I do not remember where I
purchased it.
I found that double sided and duct tape can act as another pair of hands.
Looks like a great project that you are constructing.

Hi Ron and Lenny,

I do have a bungee cord which I sometimes wrap around the handle and hook to
a drawer in the cabinet I made for the saw to hold it down while I measure
but I don't use it all that often.

Just now I am struggling to properly aline these drawer slides. They are
actually pretty wonderful slides however the outer segment which attaches to
the cabinet wall is a full inch wider than the removable segment which
attaches to the drawer side and all I have is about a 16th tolerance. Even
with a center punch somehow those damn screws don't quite go exactly where
they should. I was out the thickness of sand paper so the bottom edge of
one side drags! Nothing for it but to fine tune it with the belt sander.

Tomorrow I have two half sized drawers to fit in the space on the other side
of the partition, jigging them precisely will be a real challenge. In
general I like the sort which attach to the bottom edge, simplifies locating
the slides on the drawer considerably and the wall mounted members quite a
bit.

Oh well, nothing for it but to be patient.

  Dale,
I liked your description of using the ruler to set up your miter saw. I
thought that I was the only one who used his chin or cheek to hold down
 the
saw to align the stock. I don't know how many times my wife made a
 comment
when she saw me doing that. Now I can tell her that it is the proper way
 to
  set up the saw.
Great description of the tool and use.

Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] quesion on Rotomatic ruler

You have done pretty well at describing the rule.

The threaded rod is six and a half inches long. The large rectangular nut
 is
the one you most commonly use for measuring. The other nut is used
 when/if
you want to lock the rectangular nut into place to hold a measure or even
 to
use it as a sort of monster feeler gauge.

You should notice a small notch cut into one of the longer sides of the
rectangular nut, this is to help orient it.

You are correct, the half inch marks are where a thread is continued all
around the face of the milled side of the threaded rod. Each revolution
 of
the nut represents one sixteenth of an inch so, half a turn is a 32nd of
 an
inch and a quarter turn is a 64th. two complete turns is an eighth of an
  inch and so on.

If you require more than 6 inches then you thread the 6 inch rod bringing
your measure up as far as 12 and a half inches, add the 12 inch rod or
 the
18 inch rod or any combination there of and you have the lengths you
  require.

What I really like about the measure is that I can set a size off of a
 plan
or I can take a measure from a project, lock the nut into place then go
 to
my miter saw and pressing the end of the rod against the blade, adjust
 the
wood to be cut until it is flush with the nut and cut an exact size. I
frequently end up with a bit of a bruise on my chin from holding the saw
down against the board, I do have a bungee cord hanging on the cabinet I
 can
use to hold the saw down to the wood while I set the distance precisely
 but
this takes time and I often don't bother.

I can as easily use it to very accurately set the distance from rip fence
 to
blade on my table saw and so on.

This is of course not adequate beyond 42 and a half inches although I
suppose you could get more rod if you need or want it.

I do try to keep a stick or two around here precisely 4 feet long but
 rarely
do I need it. Even when I raised this

If the motor starts and runs, then a reset button won't help. If the motor
runs, but the door does not move, then something in the drive unit is either
slipping or has stripped a gear. I know some old screw drive openers used a
clutch mechanism that could slip, but I don't think any use it today.

AOL EmailI'm not sure if this one is the same as the one we saw before.

  Geoff

  Tool Descriptions
  1. DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching
flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the
chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that
freshly painted part you were drying.

  2. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere
under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint
whorls and hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you to
  say, SH**!!!

  3. ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their
holes until you die of old age

  4. PLIERS: Used to round off hexagonal bolt heads.

  5. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board
principle: It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable
motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more
  dismal your future becomes.

  6. VISE GRIP PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is
available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the
  palm of your hand.

  7. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for setting various
flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the
grease inside a wheel hub you're trying to get the bearing race out of.

  8. WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and
motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or 1/2
socket you've been searching for the last 15 minutes.

  9. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground
after you have installed your new disk brake pads, trapping the jack
  handle firmly under the bumper.

  10. EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 4X4: Used to attempt to lever an
automobile upward off a hydraulic jack handle.

  11. TWEEZERS: A tool for removing splinters of wood, especially
  Douglas fir.

  12. TELEPHONE: Tool for calling your neighbor to see if he has another
  hydraulic floor jack.

  13. SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for
spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for removing dog feces from your
  boots.

  14. E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool that snaps off in bolt holes
and is ten times harder than any known drill bit.

  15. TWO-TON HYDRAULIC ENGINE HOIST: A handy tool for testing the tensile
strength of bolts and fuel lines you forgot to disconnect.

  16. CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large motor mount prying tool
that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end
  without the handle.

  17. AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw.

  18. TROUBLE LIGHT: The home builder's own tanning booth. Sometimes
called drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, the sunshine
vitamin, which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health
benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at
about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during,
say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark
than light, its name is somewhat misleading.

  19. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the lids of old-style
paper-and-tin oil cans and squirt oil on your shirt; can also be used,
as the name implies, to round off the interiors of Phillips screw heads.

  20. AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a
coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into
compressed air that travels by hose to an Pneumatic impact wrench that
grips rusty bolts last tightened 70 years ago by someone at Ford, and
  rounds them off.

  21. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

  22. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to cut hoses 1/2 inch too short.

  23. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer
now-a-days is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts
not far from the object we are trying to hit.

  24. MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well
on boxes containing upholstered items, chrome-plated metal, plastic
parts and the other hand not holding the knife.

a serious level of advice here for users of compound mitre, cross cut and
radial arm saws.

when setting timber in the path for cutting, I would advise strongly the use
of 2 f or G cramps to secure the timbers.

when lining up the timber to the blade, have the g cramps positioned and
slightly slack on the timber and work table so that slight movement is
available to lign up the timber to the blade. then one turn of the handles to
lock
the timber in place. then you have total control of the timber being cut. I
also advise the use of 4 inch by 2 inch blocks by 4 inch to add more stability
to the boards when cutting as the blade may wrench the timbers apart
depending upon the timber being cut.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Chop saw hold-downs.

2007-01-11 Thread Bill Gallik
Just a note of caution here about working with those power miter saws. I
realize most of you need to use your hands to align and fix measurements; so
be careful about getting your paws near that blade. Here's why I mention
this (because I suspect you are all very careful without me sounding like
Mom); about a year and ½ ago I was working on a small project and had just
put a new blade on the miter saw. As it turned out, I hadn't adequately
tightened the bolt holding the blade in place and it had loosened up a bit.
When I shut the saw off I heard a very peculiar sound, like a wheel turning.
The blade was loose enough to continue rolling even though the power was
off. Had I stuck my hand near that blade I would've been hurtin' for
certain. So always be on your toes when working with this machinery.

available to lign up the timber to the blade. then one turn of the handles to
lock
the timber in place. then you have total control of the timber being cut. I
also advise the use of 4 inch by 2 inch blocks by 4 inch to add more
stability
to the boards when cutting as the blade may wrench the timbers apart
depending upon the timber being cut.

[BlindHandyMan] Kitchen cabinets

2007-01-11 Thread Michael Baldwin
Hi all.
My wife found out that they are not going to renew her contract, so we are
going to be moving. In order to make our house more sellable, there are
some projects I want to get done. The first, and maybe the most important
is the kitchen. We have old metal cabinets, and they are not and good
condition, and the layout is not very good.

Instead of building each individual cabinet, I was thinking about building
them in place. has anyone ever done it this way? Is it more difficult then
building the cabinets individually and installing them? Any tips or
techniques to keep in mind for either method of building them?

thanks,
Michael

[BlindHandyMan] Conversion of Audio Files.

2007-01-11 Thread Victor Gouveia
My apologies for the cross post, but I don't know which of the lists I belong
to will consider this subject appropriate topic for discussion.

I have come into possession of some DAISY audio material that I would like to
rip from CD and onto my computer for easier listening while learning what I
have to learn from them.

Is this a possible thing to do?

Is there an audio program that will rip, or convert DAISY audio format files
from CD to MP3 or some other format that will allow me to listen to them on my
computer.

I don't want to have to install a DAISY audio program onto my computer, and
besides, I will have to return the original CD's to their rightful owner in a
few days, which will take me longer to read them.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Victor

[BlindHandyMan] Two measuring gages or jigs

2007-01-11 Thread Paul Franklin
The recent interest in measuring devices on this list prompts me to describe a
couple of types of measuring gages or jigs that I built about 25 years ago, and
that I still use to day. The first was made with a 4 foot length of 3/16
stainless steel rod and 2 pieces of ¾ square steel bar stock about 1 and ¼
long. The idea is to permanently affix one of the pieces of bar stock
perpendicular to one end of the rod, either by gas welding or by threading the
end of the rod and drilling and tapping the bar stock. The other piece of bar
stock is drilled perpendicular to it's long axes, so it can slide smoothly
along the rod. A second hole is drilled in this piece of bar stock parallel to
it's long axes, which intersects the first whole. This second whole is tapped
to accommodate a threaded bolt that acts as a set screw to lock the sliding
square stock at any point along the rod. I used a bolt with a large knurled
head that could be easily tightened or loosened by hand for the locking bolt.
To use this device, I align the end of the rod with the fixed block at one end
of the measurement to be taken, and slide and tighten the movable block at the
other end of the piece or gap to be measured. I then can transfer this
measurement to a board for cutting or use it to set stop blocks on a chop saw
or set a fence on a table saw. I have found this device to be quick to use and
accurate enough for cabinet work. Over the years I have built several shorter
versions of this device for use in tight areas.

My second home made device has turned out to be especially handy for installing
base boards, door trim, interior studs or wall paneling. It is primarily made
out of wood and it telescopes from 4 to 8 feet in length, and can be locked at
any point between. It is made from a 4 Foot, clear ¾ pine board about 2 Inches
wide. I cut a 3/8 Inch deep by ¾ Inch wide groove down the center of one of
the 2 Inch faces of the board and ripped a 4 Foot strip of pine to slide
smoothly in the groove. I next cut a 4 Foot long by 2 Inch piece of ¼ plywood
and glued and nailed it over the groove in the pine board, to make a 4 Foot box
or sleeve for the pine strip to slide in. I then cut a 2 by 2 Inch ¾ Inch
thick pine block and drilled a ¼ whole in its center. Next I temporarily
aligned this block on the plywood side covering the groove at one end of the
device and with the sliding strip removed, I extended the ¼ Inched Whole
through the plywood, into the groove, but not into the pine board at the bottom
of the groove. Next I tightly mortised a ¼ square nut into the face of the 2
by 2 Inch block so it lines up with a threaded bolt inserted through the whole
in the block and is flush with one face of the block. With a ¼ bolt threaded
through the block and nut, and protruding about ½ inch below the nut I inserted
the end of the locking bolt through the plywood side and into the groove below.
I then glued and nailed the block and locking bolt assembly to the plywood
side covering the groove. With the sliding pine strip inserted into the groove
the threaded bolt on the block can be tightened to lock the strip in any
position between 4 and 8 Feet. To use the device I align one of its ends with
a wall or the floor and slide out the strip to make the needed measurement.
With the locking bolt tightened this measurement can then be transferred to a
board or panel for accurate cutting. I don't use this jig often, but it's nice
to know that it is hanging on the shop wall when the need arises.

I think that it has taken me longer to describe this stuff than it took to
build it. Sorry for being so long winded.

Paul Franklin

  Dale,
I liked your description of using the ruler to set up your miter saw. I
thought that I was the only one who used his chin or cheek to hold down the

Great description of the tool and use.

You have done pretty well at describing the rule.

The threaded rod is six and a half inches long. The large rectangular nut is
the one you most commonly use for measuring. The other nut is used when/if
you want to lock the rectangular nut into place to hold a measure or even to
use it as a sort of monster feeler gauge.

You should notice a small notch cut into one of the longer sides of the
rectangular nut, this is to help orient it.

You are correct, the half inch

[BlindHandyMan] miter saw versus table saw?

2007-01-11 Thread John Schwery
I have never seen or used a miter saw. Can anything be done with a
miter saw that can't be done on a table saw? What are the advantages
of miter saws? How wide and how thick of pieces can a miter saw handle?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] miter saw versus table saw?

2007-01-11 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hello John,
You can make the cuts on a table saw however making repetitious crosscuts is
much easier on the miter saw.
My saw is a sliding 8 1/4 and can cut a 12 board with no problem.
Something that is easy to do on the miter is making my plant stands. I use
the table saw to rip all stock to the desired width then use the miter saw
to cut to length.
I set the stop to 18 and cut several leg sets. I then set the stop to 6
3/8 and cut a bunch of aprons and the inside part of the top. then I set it
to 9 3/8 for the remaining parts for the top.
You could do this with the table saw but it would take a lot of time to set
up for each cut. I have already done that but find the miter saw much
easier and faster.

I have never seen or used a miter saw. Can anything be done with a
miter saw that can't be done on a table saw? What are the advantages
of miter saws? How wide and how thick of pieces can a miter saw handle?

All kidding aside I line up the board as best as I can and then I use my
left elbow with my left arm draped over the saw I use my left hand to line
upt the mark on the board with the blade and with my rite hand I move the
stock to where I need it. Then when it is set I can drop the blade once
 more
with my left hand and double check the mark with my rite hand. Hope this

[BlindHandyMan] Points to consider When Thinking About Buying a Mitre Saw

2007-01-11 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Generally speaking mitre saws come in three basic versions, mitre, compound
mitre and sliding compound mitre. The decision to by a mitre saw is not an
easy
thing, it can almost be as hard as choosing a name for your first-born
child. Not only do mitre saws come in various sizes and designs, but also
each manufacturer
will have various design features that can be both a pro and a con in the
functionality of the saw. As the buyer you will have to decide on which
features
are most important for the work you do most often, and which draw backs are
least likely to send you running off to the funny farm. If you will be using
your saw for strictly framing, well you should consider durability and
portability of the unit, however, if you will be using it for finishing work
only,
you will want to get the most accurate saw for your money, if however, you
will be doing a combination of both jobs you will want to find that happy
medium.

Before we get further into our look a the various features of the mitre saw,
I think that it is important for us to understand the differences between
the
three types of mitre saws:

MITRE SAW - (commonly called the chop saw); as the name mitreimplies, this
style of saw will cut left and right mitre angles on the horizontal axis:
from
90° (0°) to 45°-53° (depending on the manufacturer of the saw), and will
have preset mitre stops at 45°, 22-1/2° and 0° (90°).

Shopping Guide Check List
By keeping the following points in mind when shopping for your new mitre
saw, you will have greater success in choosing the right tool for your needs
and
budget. Unfortunately about 90 percent of the time you won't have a chance
to turn the machine on in the store, but it doesn't hurt to ask:
. What country is the saw manufactured in?
. What is the blade size?
. What is the amperage of the motor? Is it direct drive or belt drive?
. What accessories come with the mitre saw (hold down clamps, dust bag)?
. Does the saw have a blade lock for single wrench blade changes?
. What is the quality and type of blade that comes with the mitre saw?
. Does the sliding mechanism run on a single or dual rail?
. Does the rail slide on bearings or sleeves?
. What is the warranty and who does the service work in your area?
. Does the motor have soft start, and an electric brake?
. How convenient is the connection to your shop vacuum?
. What is the cutting capacity of the saw at 90o and 45o?
. Does the saw have preset angles for crown moldings?
. What is the availability of parts? What is the warranty period?
. Is the bed a single piece or a two piece bed?
. Does the saw look and feel good to you? You are the one who must feel
comfortable and confident when using your tools.
. Most importantly of all, HAS YOUR SPOUSE GIVEN YOU PERMISSION TO BUY IT?

COMPOUND MITRE SAW - this style of mitre saw will cut the same mitre angles
as the mitre saw, however, it is also capable of cutting a bevel angle (what
people refer to as the compound angle). The bevel angle is cut on the
vertical axis to the left (from 0° to 45°-50°), this angle can be cut on
it's own,
or in conjunction with the mitre angle, thus making this a much more
versatile saw. Compound angles are most commonly cut when installing crown
moldings.

SLIDING COMPOUND MITRE SAW - is a compound mitre saw with the addition of
extra cutting capacity obtained by moving the motor and blade across the
material
to be cut (think of it as a small radial arm saw). In this variety of saw
the motor and blade is mounted to a rail system (either a single or double
rail
depending on the manufacturer). The bevel angle on the sliding compound
mitre saw can be either a single bevel angle (to the left) or a dual bevel
angle
(left and right) depending on who the manufacturer of the saw is.

The Basics: Mitre saws come in a variety of sizes, when we refer to the size
of the mitre saw, we usually relate to the blade diameter. Mitre saws range
in size from 8-1/4-inches in diameter all the way up to 12-inches in
diameter; the most common size purchased is the 10-inch mitre saw (most of
these saws
will use the common 5/8 blade arbor, however, some manufacturers of 12
mitre saws will utilize a 1 blade arbor). Another all important
consideration
when looking at purchasing a mitre saw is the motor amperage (how much
cutting power the saw has), motors will range in amperage from as little as
9 amps
all the way up to 15 amps. Portability can be of concern as well; mitre saws
can differ in weight from as little as 18 lbs, all the way up to a Herculean
50 lbs

Cutting Capacity: Compared with a mitre saw, the extra money you spend for a
sliding compound mitre saw buys you not only the chop action (vertical
cutting
capacity against the fence), but also horizontal cutting capacity - over
sized material that normally will not fit against the fence on edge can be
laid
flat on the bed.

Mitre and Bevel Angles: Because the operating angle varies widely, consider

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem

2007-01-11 Thread pythonden21
Has anyone consiered that the garage door opener might be fine and it could
be the door is jammed, off it's tracks, or something like that?

If this is the case a new garage door opener wouldn't work, it must be
possible to disengage the opener and see if the door can be opened manually.

Py

Good way to fix the problem real easy and save a butt load of money is to
unhook the unit from the door and call it a day. Also a good way to give
 your arms some exersize.
When I moved  out here to the farm the garage had those old doors that were
one solid piece. They would swing out at the bottom and in at the  top. I
finally had them replaced. Biggest reason was quite frankly I was concerned
that they would some day come completely undone and fall on some ones head.
Wow that could really ruin  a guys day.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Kitchen cabinets

2007-01-11 Thread Dale Leavens
I have done it both ways but not for a very long time and these days with
new hardware it is a lot easier to build boxes and instal them.

One big advantage of the modular method is that you are still living in that
kitchen so, you can build the boxes and so on and when the time comes to
instal you just pull what is there and instal the new modular ones.

Because you intend to sell I would strongly advise you to buy and instal the
so called flat-pack systems. Each box comes in a flat package and fits
together with those special fittings already installed and all. Fix up a
good lay-out, go to a cabinet center in one of those big building stores
with the measurements, they can plug them into a computer and calculate each
of the components then order them. I think I would even ask and consider
professional installation.

Attractive functional cabinets will improve price but take care to go with
the lowest common denominator. Too personal and your buyers will appreciate
the beauty but may build in the price of replacement to their offer.

The thing about built-in-place is that once started, modification is usually
very difficult, you can't use the kitchen for much until the job is fully
finished and this includes paint, varnish or what ever.

Price out a custom modular system and see, you may find you aren't saving
much money at the price of a lot of work and of course, until the job is
fully finished the value of the home is actually diminished.

Just a few thoughts.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Kitchen cabinets

Is it more difficult
 then
building the cabinets individually and installing them? Any tips or
techniques to keep in mind for either method of building them?

 thanks,
 Michael

I guess I have done it both ways. If you will be trying to use the kitchen
during the time of construction I think you and spouse will be happyer if you
build them elsewhere and install as built units. The time you are out of a
sink etc will be much less, not even considering the mess. Finishing can also
be better done out of the living area.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] miter saw versus table saw?

2007-01-11 Thread Dale Leavens
Lenny has already spoken of some of the strengths of a power miter saw. IT
is a little beyond convenience though. Mostly, anything you can do with a
miter saw you can do with a table saw and this is why a table saw is
considered the preferred major power tool, it's versatility although there
are those who would say the same for a radial arm saw.

Not only is a miter saw easier to use for cross cutting, it is much more
accurate than using a miter gauge on a table saw, even a very good
third-party miter gauge worth hundreds of dollars. This does not mean you
can't get very decent accuracy from a table saw and some will do better than
others, just that a miter saw is specialized for the task, a table saw
specialized for ripping. Many people make do with a band saw as their
primary stationary tool and do pretty darn good work with one too.

I have not yet found or heard of a power miter saw that will cut beyond 12
inches at right angles, even the big 14 inch ones don't seem to have more
capacity but there may be some. This is one strength of a radial arm saw,
most, maybe all go out to 24 inches but apparently not quite so accurately
as a miter saw. I rather expect that a well maintained radial arm saw though
is about as good as you can get from a miter saw, I don't see any reason why
not but I don't actually own one or wish to at this time.

I really appreciated the capability of my miter saw when building roof
trusses. There is no way I could slide a 16 foot 2 by 4 through my table saw
and cut any angle accurately. The trusses I built for my shed were done
before I had the miter saw so I cut them with a hand circular saw and a
series of guide jigs.

Anyway, hope this is helpful.

I have never seen or used a miter saw. Can anything be done with a
miter saw that can't be done on a table saw? What are the advantages
of miter saws? How wide and how thick of pieces can a miter saw handle?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Conversion of Audio Files.

2007-01-11 Thread pythonden21
Easiest way would be to use a connecting cord from the daisy player headphone
jack or earplug connection to the computer microphone jack and record on the
computer while the daisy player plays. Takes time and certainly ram memory,
but if you got the time and the computer has what it takes that works. If
you have a sound program that skips the ram and stores direct to the HD, even
better.

Watch out for plug sizes and consider mono vs. stereo plugs and wires.

Py

My apologies for the cross post, but I don't know which of the lists I
belong to will consider this subject appropriate topic for discussion.

I have come into possession of some DAISY audio material that I would like
to rip from CD and onto my computer for easier listening while learning what
 I
 have to learn from them.

Is this a possible thing to do?

Is there an audio program that will rip, or convert DAISY audio format files
from CD to MP3 or some other format that will allow me to listen to them on
 my computer.

I don't want to have to install a DAISY audio program onto my computer, and
besides, I will have to return the original CD's to their rightful owner in a
few days, which will take me longer to read them.

 Does anyone have any ideas?

 Victor

Look and see if there is any obstructions in the way. The best way to do
this is pull the emergency cord and see if the door will go up manually.
Check and see if the electric safety eyes are lined up with each other.

Yesterday I was sitting in the garage when my wife came home, and when

wouldn't go up. So after telling her to stop trying to open the door
because something was wrong, I went back in there and check to make sure
 the

pulley. Okay, I check both the sprocket and pulley, and both were okay.
Today, I'm going to look for a reset button, but doubt there is one. Has
anyone ever experienced this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? I
hate to have to call for a repair man to come out, these bastards cost to

RE: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem

2007-01-11 Thread Keith Christian
Hi,

I had a similar problem a few years ago too. I am actually having it
again. The door is out of balance and the opener will not pull it up.
I can push it up pretty easily, but there is a noticeable gap on one
side of the garage where it should meet the ground. The other side of
the garage is flush with the ground. Last time this happened, I had
someone come out and adjust the door, but I'd like to do it this time.

Does anyone have suggestions how to do this? The door is a roll up
aluminum door and there is a big spring that needs to be tightened or
loosened above the door.

Thanks,

Keith

Had a similar problem.

One of 2 problems encountered. First if your opener is a few years old
there is a plastic clutch with sprockets that break off and cause the
drive
to stop pulling the door open.

Second see if the springs have broken. They are either on each side or
on
the top of the door running the whole length of the top. This is easy to

check by disengaging the drive and seeing if you can lift it manually.
If
you can your springs are fine.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem

2007-01-11 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Keith,

I don't know a thing about those doors but do wish to offer a word of
warning!

Just over a year ago I had a patient who decided to repair a very large door
it is true, one for a carwash. The spring got away on him, actually the
fixing point got away I guess but because of the tension it spun rapidly
striking his hand several times resulting in multiple fractures of the
thumb, index and middle fingers of his left hand including some of the
metacarpal bones. Several pins were required to thread various bits of bone
together and although he did recover pretty good function it was at the cost
of several months and a sh*t load of pain.

In my experience most springs are alive, vindictive and fully unforgiving.
Heavy ones which counterbalance heavy doors are simply more compulsive and
angry.

Having said that, it is quite possible such a repair can be performed
perfectly easily and safely, just don't trust springs!

Dale, the chin is used to turn the pilot wheel on a drill press so you can
get a bit snug enough to measure properly. I thought everyone knew this.

I have a door just like what you are describing. My door had a problem with
the side cables. the one side bound up. I raised the door and took off the
cables. I have to say the door is heavy without the springs holding it up.
When I say heavy I mean it is literally like picking up over 100 pounds and
I do not exadurate. not sure how an alumanum door can bee so heavy but it
is. I got the cables wownd up again but it came undone again. It looks easy
but unless you know how to tention the springs you will not get it wright. I
am not sure but it may be a 2 man job I had some one come out and fix it. I
would have had them show me but I am a renter so it is no skin off my nose.
If you know a handy man that is willing to show you how it is done I think
you would be able to do it if you had to in the future.
All I am saying is from experiance do not try this untill you find out how
to tention the springs properly.

[BlindHandyMan] Replacing and adjusting Garage door Springs.

2007-01-11 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All
I have Posted this article before but the list has had some traffic recently
on this subject so here it is again.
Replacing And Adjusting Torsion and Side Mounted Garage Door Springs

How do you adjust or replace garage door springs?

There are two different styles of garage door springs used on sectional
doors... TORSION and SIDE-MOUNTED.

Torsion springs are mounted on a stationary metal shaft located above and
parallel to the top of the garage door frame. They are attached on one end
to
a stationary plate located above the center of the door frame. The springs
extend along the shaft, and work by twisting as the garage door closes by
means
of cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel. This
tension makes it easier to lift the garage door from its closed position.

Side mounted springs are long heavy springs mounted on each side of the
upper garage door track. Through the use of pulleys, they perform the same
function
as the torsion springs... they come under tension when the garage door is
closed to make lifting the door easier.

IMPORTANT TIP: Always replace garage door springs as a set! This may not be
obvious to a novice, but it makes sense. If one spring has broken, can the
other
spring's demise be far behind? Add that little bit of common sense to the
fact that the strength of a spring decreases with time and use. The use of a
new spring with an old spring can cause an imbalance in the door that cannot
be corrected for through adjustment.

Spring Replacement and Adjustment Techniques...

For Side Mounted Springs Only...

You must release the tension on the garage door springs before attempting
adjustment or replacement. This is accomplished by opening the garage door
as
fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track. Hold the garage
door in this position by attaching a C-clamp to the track at a point below
the lowest door roller (wheel).

This is true even if you have a garage door opener. Just because the door is
open does not mean that the spring tension is fully released. Use the
emergency
release rope to disconnect the opener from the door and push the door up as
far as you can without damaging the opener. Then clamp as described above.

If there are safety cables installed, they must be disconnected and removed
from the springs. The old spring is attached at two points. One end is a
fixed
attachment to the garage door track or wood frame. The other end is attached
to a pulley through which the garage door cable is threaded. Simply
disconnect
these two attachments and reattach the new spring in the same way. Be sure
not to twist the garage door cable when reattaching the pulley.

While the pulley is disconnected from the spring, give it a quick hard look.
If it appears that the pulley bearings are very sloppy and have lots of
wobble,
replace the pulleys. There is no repair other than replacement. The door
will function more smoothly and save you additional work later. And you
might
as well check the stationary pulleys, too, while you are at it! Makes sense,
right?

Once all attachments are completed, test the door once for proper function
before reattaching the safety cables. You may find that the new springs may
be
too lively and the door may not close all the way. If that is the case,
you will have to look at the way the bare end of the garage door cable is
attached
to the garage door track, and loosen an inch or two. This end may be simply
looped through the holes in the track, or it could be attached by means of
a special clip and an S-hook. In either case adjust both sides equally
either by shortening the cable or by repositioning the S-hook in a different
hole
in the track. The springs should visually be in about the same position when
extended fully (door in down position).

Of course, if you do not have enough tension in the springs, and want to
make manual opening of the door easier, you may adjust the garage door cable
into
a tighter position also.

For Torsion Springs Only...

(NOTE: Some modern torsion springs can be adjusted with a special adapter
and an electric drill. I would suggest visiting the manufacturer's website
concerning
the appropriate adjustment method. The article below refers to typical
manual adjustment.)

Adjustment to torsion springs can be dangerous because they must be adjusted
with the door down and the spring under tension.

Torsion springs must be adjusted with the door in the down position. Be
sure to have all your tools inside before closing the door unless you have
an alternate
access door to the garage!

1) Secure the door in place by putting a C-clamp on the garage door track
under the bottom-most door roller. As you adjust the spring more tightly,
there
is the chance that the door may begin to rise if you overtighten it... a
dangerous possibility!

2) The moveable end of each spring is attached to an adjustment collar.
There is a set screw in the adjustment

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem

2007-01-11 Thread rj
It can be done, but with caution. The pipe that goes through the coil spring
must be secured so it won't move when loosening the set screws or bolts on the
end of the spring. There must be a round bar that fits the holes in the end cap
of the spring, to hold the spring from turning when loosening the set screw
bolts. and a second bar to walk the spring around the pipe. When installing
these, years ago, I did see a fellow lose a finger, when he slip with one of
these bars. So if you try it, be careful.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Kitchen cabinets

2007-01-11 Thread Bill Gallik
One thought about building your cabinets. When my brother built his kitchen
cabinets he noted that the boxes should be built so that the back (the
part of the cabinet that is attached to the wall) should be slightly shorter
than the front. This is so that when you hang them connecting cabinet boxes
will be assured to fit snugly next to each other where they're going to be
seen -- in the front. If there happens to be any slight imperfection in
your wall this adjustment will guarantee the snug fit at the front and the
slight at the back goes unnoticed.

I guess I have done it both ways. If you will be trying to use the kitchen
during the time of construction I think you and spouse will be happyer if
you build them elsewhere and install as built units. The time you are out
of a sink etc will be much less, not even considering the mess. Finishing
can also be better done out of the living area.

Any tips or
techniques to keep in mind for either method of building them?

  thanks,
