[BD] Indoor pull stuff

2005-12-09 Thread Andrew Godber
Just wanted to say something briefly. We tried to implement the new pull
rules last weekend at the Great Barr Crawls to the NIA, and I thought
they were generally a success. Well done Benji.

I noticed from the sidelines that there were a few people who hadn't
bothered to learn the rules in the slightest, but they were also the
people that I saw bending the other rules a bit during the game, so it
wasn't a shock. People tended to think more about the pulls, and a few
people started to attack the pulls in order to gain a bit of ground.
Probably due to the nature of some of the people there, the
pull-catching nervousness was still present but that mindset will soon
disappear.

[BD] Great Barr 2005

2005-12-07 Thread Andrew Godber
Afternoon all,

This weekend saw the 5th instalment of the Great Barr Crawl, but it all
got a bit bigger. Bigger venue, more teams, bigger and better party,
much bigger all-star fantasy game (75m x 20m pitch), bigger TD's...

Thanks to all the teams who came along and had a good time, and many
thanks to everyone who helped us out throughout the weekend:

*Si for arranging the schedule and the super-spreadsheet;
*Katie for the computer for the above;
*Birmingham players, WAS players and everyone else who helped set up and
keep score;
*Steve  Alli Lookfly for their excellent entertainment at the party;
* Everyone else who helped us.

The results were as follows:

Fantasy Game All Star - Dave Pretty Boy from Cowboys (Winner of the
Cliff Richard calendar)

Layout Prize - Wigsy (Action man trophy)

Fantasy frisbee teams: 3rd Sarah Whiplash, 2nd Joel Woof, 1st Oscar
Flyght Club (Cash)
(Biggest striped marlin caught on a fly - 212lbs)

20th - Arthur Terry (Balti Spoon)
19th - Discophilia
18th - Airwolf
17th - Too Many pies
16th - Haze
15th - WAS
14th - Red
13th - Up The Left
12th - Lords
11th - Aye-Aye
10th - Peppermint Hippos
9th - Flyght Club (Small Balti dish)
8th - Baboom
7th - Cowboys
6th - Whiplash
5th - Angels (getting over a loss to the mighty WAS)
4th - Disc Hunters
3rd - Woof
2nd - Kamaya Maya
1st - Mexican Horse Bandits (Large balti dish)

Spirit was tied between Flyght Club and Too Many Pies, and Tom Styles
won it for Flyght Club in a game of gibbon.

So thanks again, and maybe see you all next year.

[BD] University Open Indoor National Division 2 2005 results

2005-11-28 Thread Andrew Godber
Morning all,

This weekend saw us set a couple of records in Staffordshire. We held
the tournament with the longest and most convoluted name, (47
characters) and also the tournament with the largest gap between pitches
to prevent games interfering with each other. (18.1 miles) It was a
strange weekend for most of the teams, but we all want to say thank you
to those that came to play, and made it a very hard fought tournament.

The results were as follows:

16th UCL (Rice Spoon winners)
15th Flatball 2
14th York
13th BUF
12th Mohawks
11th Positive Mojo
10th UCD
9th Bears (Small Balti Dish Winners)
8th Too Many Pies
7th Boogie Knights
6th Ro Sham Bo 2
5th Uriel
4th OW!
3rd Sublime
2nd Skunks
1st BLT (Large Balti Dish Winners)

Spirit of the Game - Positive Mojo

Thanks again to all those who helped throughout the weekend, and hope
you all had a good time.

Lost property list to be collated and sent out later.

[BD] First aid supplies

2005-11-22 Thread Andrew Godber
I have plugged this company before, but I am going to do so again, because it
was a while ago.

www.firstaid4sport.co.uk javascript:ol('www.firstaid4sport.co.uk'); is a
great website for ready made first aid kits, and also individual items such as
a bumper pack of instant cold packs, plasters, tape, whatever. If clubs are
putting on practices in parks or anywhere without first aid cover, then you
should really bring along a basic kit like this for your players benefit. (and
presumably think about who has any know-how to use it) You can order a basic
kit for around £20, or put a more ultimate orientated one together for as cheap.
Anyway, the good bit is that we can all get a 5% discount when we order. If you
log in, and then register as part of the loyalty group UK Ultimate Frisbee,
using the password 7408977740, then you get the 5% off straight away. If more
people join up and order stuff, then the level of discount increases, and we
all save a bit more money.
So there you go, advert over. (I am nothing to do with this site, other than a
customer by the way)

Afternoon all,

You are all invited to the latest thrilling instalment of the Great Barr Crawl.
We are having our usual Birmingham style indoor tournament again this year on
December 3-4th, but with a few differences.

* 100% more pitch space with 66% more teams at the NIA Community Hall
slap bang in Birmingham City Centre (Scene of last years indoor regionals, and
yes it is where they used to film Gladiators)
* Venue is nestled right amongst the bars, shops, ring-road systems,
restaurants, (gentleman's clubs), art galleries, warehouses that make up the
lively landscape of modern Birmingham.
* Excellent venue with great facilities, etc and still easy to get to.
* A minimum of 11, yes 11, games over the weekend.
* Innovative schedule to provide shorter gaps between games and time off
for Christmas shopping/boozing/whatever you want
* Bigger better party with Indoor Skittles competition, prizes, private
bar, music, dance floor, the lot. (All taking place in a venue next to a Balti
House#)
* Party tickets included with team packs.
* A chance to do your Christmas shopping in the Bullring in between games.
*   Free stuff for teams.
* A chance to win great prizes, some home-made, but all quality.
* Probably no Fantasy Frisbee All Star game, unless you pester Si into
scheduling one.

There will be 20 team slots available, but people have been pestering me for
weeks for a slot, so send your cheques off soon.

Cheques for £100 to be payable to Andrew Godber, and sent to the address below.
Please make sure that your team name, and a contact email address are written
on the back, so you can take part in the democratic scheduling.

Any questions, then give me a shout.

Indeed! Last I heard, the tournament was down to 27 teams.

The argument that splitting the Tour venues will reduce the number of
teams in the B-Tour because everyone wants/needs to see the top teams
to make their tournament worthwhile, isn't really borne out by this lack
of interest.

Still, a 2:30 start time is fine by me

Roger Thomson writes:

So many pickups, a 29 team knockout (thus giving some top teams more

Surely time to make Nationals a prestigious 16 team tournament than
teams actually have to do something to qualify for?

 Just a thought.

Don't the rules prohibit the Cardiff guys and others from picking up?

All rostered teams can pick up one guest (i.e. any unrostored player).

B Tour teams are not considered 'rostered', so in effect they can pick
up any other unrostered players.

The rules are in need of being tidied up, any volunteers to help with
this process are very welcome (please email [EMAIL PROTECTED])

[BD] Seriously...

2005-08-18 Thread Andrew Godber
.B tour results anyone? Seeing as teams were supposed to have
entered for nationals by yesterday, and the top 32 rankings can't even
be worked out yet?

As far as I can gather from speaking to friends, it was along the lines
of:

1. Devon 1
2. BPF 2
3. Lucky Huckers
4. Cardiff
5
6
7
8
9. Boogie Knights
10
11
12 Lords of the Ring
13
14 Sheffield Steal 2
15
16. UTB 1 who were mysteriously on the schedule for Colchester, despite
playing in Mansfield. Unfortunately, we lost all our games in both
events.

I guess that the main argument against that is that there are a lot of

throughout the year. If Dom did it this way, then hopefully he would get
responses from all the geo-clubs around the country that do actually
practice, rather than a list which contains a lot of student old-boys
teams that get together for indoors twice a year. After all, whatever we
give out to the unsuspecting student has to be effective and to the
point, and they will get a bit annoyed if the first 4 teams they email
near to them don't train anyway.

Lets remember, Dom is asking for a paragraph; and it is in order to get
more people playing properly. It can't be that bad?

Dominic -

Wouldn't it be better for this just to be an additional field or two on
the UKUA finder? Why not talk to the UKUA webmaster? Whatever you want
to put into the Lookfly CD would just be an export of a pretty easy
query.

Otherwise you are duplicating a system and data that already exists -
you won't be able to rely on people giving you a full set of information
and any updates would have to be made in two places at once...

Enthusiasm is to be admired but it shouldn't complicate matters or
burden team captains with having to provide more info to more sources.

PS London Summer League is proving to be more exciting and of higher
quality than ever before - now we're in the knockout games we've had 2
amazing close games played in great spirit: such a shame it's nearly
over (and that we lost the 1/4!)

Long live summer and winter leagues, surely the future of our sport.

Hi BD,

One of the big points where we lose people from our sport is directly
after University - a lot of the people who play at Uni graduate, then
say to themselves There's no club near where my parents / my new job,
or The

only club near me is for really experienced people, they won't want me.

Now, I know there's already a Clubfinder on the UKUA website, but it's
not particularly friendly. I'm proposing to put something in the
Fresher's Packs CD that Lookfly / Roadie Films put together - it's the
most direct way of getting info to students.

We'll be putting in a Where to play Ultimate over the summer holidays
section. Ideally, I'd like a brief paragraph on each club in the
country in there. This should contain:

Club name
Normal training location(s) and times
Perceived geographical catchment area
Attitude to complete beginners (We coach people from beginner level /
we're only for experienced players
Attitude to inexperienced players (only played Uni ultimate) Contact
email addresses and phone numbers Divisions the club plays in (Open,
mixed, women's, Juniors)

plus any other information you might feel is useful.

Please email me with a brief description of your club, and look forward
to a flood of students coming to your practices.

RE: [BD] Re: Rubbish @ Tour events

2005-08-04 Thread Andrew Godber
We just need players to give a s*t.

While we are on this particular subject, would it really be that much of
a problem for people to clear up their rubbish by the sides of the
pitches after they have finished a match? You obviously were able to
carry your water bottles over to the game, so it can't take too much
effort to get rid of the empty bottle afterwards surely? If we are
worried about image to spectators/on-lookers then a set of pitches
strewn with rubbish can't be that good.

And no, this isn't just because I had to pick it up this time around.

Onto DVD? (or HD with the capability of burning to DVD)

(I'm pretty sure that I can source a video copy and get it burned to
DVD, but the odds are that there are UK players with the gadgetry to get
a better quality straight-to-DVD versions)

Does anyone know if Eurosport, IWGA or any Ultimate organisation plan to

RE: [BD] WL Dates

2005-07-22 Thread Andrew Godber
Hi,

Those dates were exactly what I was thinking of. The only thing that has
changed them in the past is whether the venues are available on the
Saturdays or the Sundays.

I am also very much in favour of trying to get teams to play in their
local regions, but I had my whinge about that last year. I would also
think that a Charity Mug would go down very well, as all the teams in
the Midlands were quite keen to qualify for the CS last year, and would
like to get some early season practice. (Having said that, Bears were
also disappointed that their promised CS spot was taken away from them,
but I had a whinge about that last year too!)

Cheers,

Midlands (AKA Andy Godber)

PS I am looking into new venues for the Midlands as an alternative to
last year. Just in case.

Thanks very much for your hard work Benji, would be brilliant if we
could avoid schedule clashes. The joys of an indoor DoC at last :-)

The London Winter League was initially set up in 2001 as a springboard
for UK teams playing in Hawaii 2002, with a bit of co-ordination we can
make the now UK-wide Winter Leagues just as good a springboard for Perth
2006 (although the November date means we are more of a chance to bed in
new players than a pre-season).

It seems to make sense if as many Winter Leagues as possible use the
same weekends to free the most dates for schmindoors.

Luckily, like Midlands, our initial preference is for the 2nd weekend in
every month - to give an extra week after Nationals before we kick off,
and so that we don't have to play on Jan 01! Only down-side is that Dec
11 is only 14 days to Christmas and there may be a few absentees - I
think our opinion is that we have to live with that.

For us that would mean:
1. Sunday Nov 13
2. Sunday Dec 11
3. Sunday Jan 8
4. Sunday Feb 12
5. Saturday Mar 11 Charity shield Party (provisional depending on
Rimini etc, can't see any dates on the Paga site)

Does that tie in with what Midlands are thinking?

To encourage the bigger teams to support their local Winter Leagues we
are going to consider closing the Charity Shield to the winners (and
maybe 2nd etc) of Regional Winter Leagues plus a couple of invited
overseas teams if we can get them. Perhaps we also need to look at the
next tier as well (the Charity Mug?), several teams not in the Shield
came down to London last year and it went well. Comments to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] please, or to BD if you think they are important
enough.

BD,

I've had a couple of expressions of interest about tournaments and
dates, but I can't really give people useful advice until I know when
winter leagues are happening. Midlands say they'd prefer the second
weekend of each month; and I've heard an underground rumour that London
WL are thinking second weekend too.

Please could WL organisers get in touch with their preferred plans
within the next 7 days; otherwise I'll have to assume that everyone's
using the

second weekend of the month. It'll make life a whole lot easier for me
and for the student coordinators.

Don't mean to hassle folk, but indoor halls have got to be booked early,

and we all want the best ones.

If anyone waits until december to announce a winter league that clashes
with other planned events, they'll be the only ones to blame for a
messed-up calendar.

RE: [BD] Indoor Pull

2005-06-24 Thread Andrew Godber
Well, I can offer my services to any tournament director for indoors.

I am about 1.97m tall in my trainers, and therefore the service I can
offer is to stand at the receiving end for every pull. If I make sure
that I am standing in line with the pull when the disc gets to the
endzone. If the disc goes over my head (allowing for the depth of the
rim, and any sticking up of my hair) then the pull is a bad one.
However, if the disc hits me in the head/chest/knackers, then you are
guaranteed that the pull was a good one, and you also have a handy
marker as to where to begin play from.

I am awaiting offers from TD's as we speak.

RE: [BD] Tour schedule

2005-05-18 Thread Andrew Godber
I think the B tour this time around was 3 or 4 x 45mins + caps, then 3 x 60mins
+ caps.

Whilst I agree that this imbalance is not ideal, I think it has been discussed
a great deal around Tour 1 that there is only so much pitch time to be shared
around at each event this year. The facts are this year the venues are a little
bit too small for the numbers of teams entering, and next year bids will have
to face up to this.

I would like to imagine that at Tour 4 this year (with split venues) we may end
up being able to have more pitch time all around, because of greater numbers of
pitches. (Obviously I could be proved wrong by someone clever like JP, because
there is more than that to scheduling) Hopefully the silver-lining of the
pitch-time-cloud is that it must mean more teams entering the Women's B tours
than before, and a kick up the backside to more people to find venues for tour
events next year.

I guess that changes to costs could be a fairer way of reflecting the
difference if the pitch time itself is seen as a fait accompli. It would mean
ending up with tournament fees being along the lines of £200 for A, £125 for B
women's instead of £160 say. Is £200 a bad deal anyway, considering it is
split to less than £15 for 15 people. (tournament fees are always the cheapest
part of the weekend anyway)

PS I will save this email for after Tour 3, when the same discussion starts

Maybe we could use this opportunity to address the imbalance in play time
between the A, B and women's Tours too. As described in previous posts to
Britdisc, the situation as it stands is not fair. At the moment:

A Tour (6 x 90 min) B Tour (??) Women's Tour (7 x 45-60 min)

I'd be happy with whatever change in schedule is deemed appropriate provided
that the following is implemented if there are still big differences in pitch
time:

***Have differences in cost for different divisions. Relative costs could be
determined by the UKUA according to the schedule and forwarded to TDs, who then
set the entry fees accordingly.***

As another aside, the Women's final should also have a slot on its own so that
others can watch. I'd say alongside the Open final is fine and people can
choose which game to watch or flitter between the two. Both the Open and
Women's finals showcase the game at its highest standard and feature some of
the top teams in Europe.

RE: [BD] AB Women's tour Pitch time

2005-04-05 Thread Andrew Godber
JP said:

Can they UKU or the TD's of the remaining three tours inform us how
many pitches they
have for their events and what average length of games can be
expected?

I would severely doubt that they can answer the second part of your
question, as they have no idea of numbers of teams. I would think that
it will be harder than ever to predict numbers of teams for Tours 2-4
this year because of exams, EUCC interruptions, and the lack of having
to go to Scotland for Tour 4. (I am not saying that is an acceptable
reason, but just one of the realistic reasons why Edinburgh is always a
bit quieter)

Most people I spoke to before Tour 1 were amazed at how many teams were
going to play, which couldn't have been predicted at bid stage. (49
teams to 60 teams is a fairly big jump from last year) When the initial
invites were sent out, I am guessing that Adam Matt didn't worry about
limiting numbers, as that has never been a problem, and after that you
can't refuse people entry. Once that number of teams have entered, it is
obviously far too late to do anything about finding a second venue. Then
couple that with a loss of pitches for the weekend, and you have the
problems with scheduling as we saw at the weekend.

I think that we have got to the stage now where the need for the
preparatory work from last year (formulating the split in the tours) has
become obvious, and ideally this years events would have had split
venues to provide more pitch time. However, I think a lot of people over
the close season looked at the fact that last years venues coped with
joint events, and didn't expect anything different for the coming year.
Now that we have seen that a combined tour event stretches the venues to
the limits, TD's and prospective TD's can scout around for more venues
for smaller events. Hopefully next year the sport will grow even more,
and make sure that we have some excellent events at excellent venues.

Lets hope you can find a good venue in Oxford for next year. (It is much
closer to Birmingham)

Your email was going so well until the middle paragraph.

I will give the mild-mannered response - I think everyone would like to
go to a tour event with good accommodation, food, facilities, etc. Even
if there isn't a Toga-dry-cleaners on site. As people have suggested, it
would be nice to have a uniform standard at Tour A B events, so people
don't have to adjust to anything other than the standard of play.

Surley a solution to the difference in times and organisational
problems for TDs would be to split the two tours to different venues,
which is what I half expect to be happening this year and am
supprised
it hasen't happened already. This way womens and Tour A could be at
one venue (or even two) and Tour B could be at another.

This way tournaments could be more tailored to the participants. ie
Tour A could have less enthusis on parties and more on providing good
food and accom for the old men, while Tour B could be more about
parties to attract the beginners and students into Ultimate and could
also have longer games like A tour. (I know this is a generalisation
of Tour A and B but probably true).

This also makes it easier to schedule full games with decent gaps for
all three competitions, and it means that venues don't have to be
limited to ones that can hold 30+ pitches, so more people from
different areas can bid for tournaments.

find it difficult to commit early, but I think that Hannah's point
was that the bigger teams could and should follow Leed's example and
pay their club earlier, allowing for early payment at tournaments.
Tour 1 in Bristol shows that one way to get more pitch time
available is to start earlier. Our team managed to survive an early
Sunday start and win their 8am game. I hope that there are other
teams currently in the B Tour that would also choose to get up early
if it meant better length games. There have been a few suggestion
of B Tour teams being ripped off (or at least getting fewer minutes
for their entry fee). While it might please some B Tour teams to get
better value for money, I don't want a discount for less playing
time. Instead I'd would prefer to get longer games that would give
us
useful insight into the effort and commitment required to survive in
the A Tour. Possum UTB #3 p.s. The spelling, grammar and views
in this email are solely my own and don't neccessarily reflect those

It
will increase, slightly, the number of teams signing up early
but there will always be small clubs who want to enter Tour
who cannot commit early. The problem arises due to the open entry
to Tour. As I can't see this being abolished there will always be
the danger of over-subscription for an event which will cause
problems with pitch time. I do think that its unacceptable
that Tour A gets so much more pitch time than anyone else for

[BD] Midland Winter League final report

2005-02-15 Thread Andrew Godber
 Morning all,

During an absolutely appalling day of wind, rain, mud, more wind, snow, more
wind, and cold the final day of the Midland Winter League was played out in
the windy city of Lichfield. All 9 teams came along to play once again with
some adapting better than others to the pitch conditions. Apologies for those
teams that had to play all their games on the worst of the new pitches, but
believe me, they were better than the old ones. (Not 2 inches of standing
 water)

The final results are as follows:

UTB 10 vs 2 Flyght Club Airwolf 6 vs
2 HazeLords 7 vs 5 uBu
B Knights 7 vs 2 Flyght Club 2 Airwolf 4

B Knights 9 vs 5 UTB Airwolf 10 vs
3 Flyght Club Bears 13 vs 5 Flyght Club 2

This means that the final standings are as follows:

hopefully they will get it engraved. The Runners-Up trophy should be winging
its way from Nottingham to Warwick in the next few weeks, and the Spirit
trophy went to Haze. (via some friends) Boogie Knights can look forward to
playing in the Charity Shield, but apparently Bears can't any more.

Many thanks to all teams for attending throughout the winter, and for all of
UTB and others who helped to run the events. See you all next year.

 Andy

[BD] Birmingham Indoor Qualifying Results

2005-01-17 Thread Andrew Godber
 Afternoon all,

Thanks again to all who helped out with running the tournament at the
weekend, and thanks to all the teams who turned up for coming and making the
event a success at a new venue. Great credit to Gav for organising the event
by himself, as he did a great job.

Some excellent games throughout the weekend, culminating in a couple of
classic semi-finals involving a sudden death finish, and a last second point
setting up another sudden death game; all followed by an excellent final
 match.

 Final results are as follows:

 16th Skunks 1 - SPIRIT WINNERS
 15th uBu 2
 14th Skunks 2
 13th Mohawks
12th Lords of the Ring 2
 11th Stourbridge
 10th Spearmint Hippos
 9th uBu 1 - PLATE WINNERS

6th Lords of the Ring 1
 5th Rusty Caius
 4th Slippery When Wet
 3rd Discuits
 2nd Ex-Fingers 6
 1st Kamaya Maya - CUP/BALTI DISH WINNERS

As Gavin said yesterday, don't ask us about qualifying spots for Nationals -
we don't know. I am sure Barry/Chris will fill us in.

Thanks again, and maybe see you next year.

RE: [BD] UKU Indoor Qualifiers

2004-12-23 Thread Andrew Godber
Seeing as we are all having a go at this, we in Birmingham are also
significantly short of teams to make the tournament worthwhile at the
moment. (Got about 6-8 teams so far)

Are teams: a) Going somewhere else on the dates?
b) annoyed because there isn't an event right by them?
c) leaving sending a cheque until the New Year?
d) just not bothered about indoors at all?
If you want to come to Birmingham, but can't get a cheque together
instantly, then please get in touch with Gav on [EMAIL PROTECTED], or
via someone else from UTB. (Not me, I will be on holiday)

All the original details are below, please get in touch soon and have a good

[BD] MWL 2

2004-12-13 Thread Andrew Godber
Afternoon all,

Thanks again for coming along to MWL 2. I hope you all enjoyed yourself in
the mud. I won't waffle on too much, but the results were as follows:

Bears 13 vs 6 Lords Boogie Knights 9 vs
7 UTB Flyght Club 2 1 vs 11 uBu
Airwolf 11 vs 6 HazeBoogie Knights 9 vs
6 uBu Flyght Club 10 vs 5 Lords
Airwolf 5 vs 7 UTB Flyght Club 8 vs
5 Flyght Club 2 Bears 14 vs 1 Haze
Bears 8 vs 2 Flyght Club Boogie Knights 9
vs 5 Flyght Club 2 UTB 6 vs 7 uBu

Airwolf 4 vs 5 Flyght Club 2 Haze3 vs

Airwolf 5 vs 11 Bears Boogie Knights 13 vs
5 Lords Flyght Club 10 vs 2 Haze

This means that Boogie Knights maintain their 100% record for the first half
of the season, and await someone to challenge them. Another excellent
performance by uBu has pushed them into second place with 4 teams chasing
behind them. Also credit to Airwolf for their first win lifting them from
the bottom of the table.

Standings as follows:

Points

Boogie Knights 8 8 0 0 81 43 38 16

uBu 8 6 0 2 55 40 15 12

MWL 3 will be on the 9th January at the same place. More details to follow

RE: [BD] scheduling issues

2004-11-24 Thread Andrew Godber
Silly? Yes.

Avoidable? Hard to see that it could be.

Nottingham Birmingham submitted their bids on the UKU range of dates given,
and could only get venues on these dates. The UKU calendar didn't incorporate
the Student ones at the time. Warwick had no knowledge of when the actual
tournaments that got bids accepted when they put their date forward.

Solution? All should come to Birmingham. It is a lovely place.*

am i right in thinking that we now have 4 tournaments scheduled for the same

nottingham and warwick indoors?

does this seem slightly silly to anyone else? any midlands teams that make it
to ntn are gonna have a tough choice to make.

[BD] 2005 UKU Indoor Qualifiers - Birmingham, 15-16th January

2004-11-23 Thread Andrew Godber
Morning everybody,

(This email is being sent before the proper invite comes out, just to keep
everyone in the picture)

We are very pleased to announce that the 1st UKU Indoor Nationals Qualifying
event will be held in Birmingham on the 15th-16th of January this year. We have
managed to negotiate use of the NIA (*) for the weekend, and will be holding a
2 pitch tournament there. Stick it in your diaries now, and keep your eyes on
Britdisc in the coming weeks for all the proper details. Close to the centre of
Birmingham, and within easy reach of dozens of bars restaurants, next door to
the Sea Life Centre, and within 5 mins walk of the Bullring January sales. Oh,
and you can also qualify for Indoor Nationals.

Look forward to seeing you all there,

Andy Gav
UTB

PS: I don't want to appear to be competing against Warwick, but wanted to make
sure people knew that the 2 tournaments clash before people commit to Warwick
Indoors.

PPS * Smart people will probably guess that we aren't actually using the main
NIA arena, but the Community Hall underneath. It is still a huge hall, but we
don't have to pay for 4500 seats.

[BD] RE: [uniultimate] EMO Hat Tournament - Sunday 7th November

2004-10-20 Thread Andrew Godber
Brummie,

I am really sorry that EMO and Purple Haze have both decided that it is
better for them to send teams on a 200 mile round trip rather than support
their local area. I can understand your view that you want a higher standard
of competition, but how will you ever get it if teams just go to London
instead? Is the LWL going to end up as Winter Tours 1-4? Teams like mine
would thrive on getting the opportunity to play teams higher up the ladder
than us, but I honestly can appreciate that it isn't the same from the other
viewpoint.

If there are other teams out there in the Midlands who would like to avoid
congestion charging, please get in contact with me ASAP about Midland Winter
League, and how you can be a part of it.

Subject: [uniultimate] EMO Hat Tournament - Sunday 7th November

BD / UU,

EMO will be holding a hat tournament as a selection process for the
forthcoming season. EMO train in and around the Leicester/Nottingham
region, currently an area lacking a top team. This season should prove to
be different. If you are interested in playing with a serious team with
serious ambition, please read on.

Aim:

EMO is aiming to be a major player in British ultimate. Achieving and
maintaining a top 8 finish, and competing seriously against the best UK
teams is our goal, with the view to qualification for WUCC Perth 2006.

We also want to spread our roots, and feed from and into other local teams.

There are no Midlands based teams capable of making the top 4, but there are

more than enough players. Now is your chance to play at that level.

How?:

EMO are changing - there will be a single squad, a single team, with a
single goal. We mean business. Hard training and regular attendance to
mid-week practices all-year-round are *obligatory*. There are already many
people on the EMO roster, but all squad places are up for grabs - existing
EMO players will need to prove their worth. We also acknowledge that there
are fantastic players in our region who are lured by the bright lights of
bigger teams. EMO will be able to provide a platform for raising the
profile of ultimate in the region, so that you will always be pushed at
training, no matter what level you play at.

We will also be competing in the London Winter League (LWL) this season,
which will provide the top level competition during the off-season that has
been missing for Midlands teams recently.

Want to be involved?

Then please come and play in our hat tournament! It's taking place in
Victoria Park, Leicester, on Sunday 7th Nov. Games start at 10am sharp, so
be ready for play at 9.30 at the latest to meet your team and warm up. This

event will be the basis for selection for the EMO squad for the first LWL
event, and for the rest of the season, but if you're injured or otherwise
unable to attend please respond anyway. If you are a big player on a big
team, but training locally appeals to you, please get in touch. There is no

commitment at this stage, so let us know if you want to come along for a
hard day's play.

Note the word hard - this is not a casual game or two. If you aren't
going to be able to commit a lot of time and effort to this team, then find
an alternative team.

If you want to play, please respond to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) with the
subject line EMO Hat, and the following details:

Name:
Current Team:
Years Played:
Contact e-mail address:

Also specify if you are unable to attend but are still interested.

Thanks, and I hope to see you soon.

RE: [BD] Open Tour Update

2004-05-24 Thread Andrew Godber
Barry, Chris, et al,

I would like to apologise on behalf of the relevant player and UTB for
breaking the rules at Tour 2. I was gutted in Eastbourne when I realised
that one of our players hadn't bothered to sort it out, and I am not here to
try and argue our case. It was not our intention to try to cheat the UKU or
any of the other teams out of anything, just unacceptable sloppiness. You
can rest assured that this won't happen again.

In a twisted way, I am glad that this has happened to SG and ourselves, as
it has showed that the UKU are willing to enforce all the regulations. I
have been whinging to anyone who will listen all year about enforcing
deadlines for Tour events, so hopefully that is the next one to be strict
on. I would like to reinforce the call now for all of the Tour teams to make
sure that their registering is up to scratch for the next event, as I am
fairly certain that Scando can't have checked all the teams. (Unless he was
a very busy man)

See you at the weekend,

Andy Godber

All,

After repeated warnings, two teams at T2 were found to have fielded
illegal
players. The two teams in question, Smash Grab and UTB have been
penalised
25% of their tour points effectively immediately. Smash and Grab will
retain
their position as tournament winners, but will be moved down the
promotion
order, along with UTB based on the points scored. Therefore Bristol
Plastic
Factory will be promoted first, and then teams will await promotion in
the
following order; Shox, Paddy Murphy, Smash and Grab, Cardiff and GB
Juniors.
If none of these teams wish to accept the promotion place then Hammerage
will remain in the A tour for T3.

The reasons for enforcing this rule are as follows:
1. The money raised by player fees are what keeps the UKU financially
afloat. We need that money to continue to run the sport. All other
players
pay to play the game. It is the captains responsibility to ensure that
all
players fielded by his/her team are valid players.
2. Part of the player fee is insurance against injury to 3rd party.
Should a
player injure a 3rd party without insurance then that player is liable
to be
sued for damages. If the injury is severe and requires continued medical
support this figure could be large, and without insure the tournament
organisers and UKU directors can be made personally liable for the
costs.
That is a risk that these people should not have to accept.

Therefore checks will continue to be made and the penalties will
continue to
be harsh. At T3 penalty for fielding an unregistered players, or
unrostered
in the A tour, will be 50% of tour points. A second offence by Smash
Grab
or UTB will result in disqualification for the team.

The points position is as follows. (Apologies for the delay - I'm having
computer trouble - still!)

RE: [BD] Tournament Costs again

2004-05-20 Thread Andrew Godber
Especially as the B Tour always gets stuck on the worst pitches as well,
where injuries are more likely/frequent.

(This is not a specific criticism of the excellent organisation of Tour 2,
as they were a victim of circumstances. )

Subject: [BD] Tournament Costs again

BD,

Following on from the discussion that the bidding process and costs
should
be more transparent, why do the A and B tours cost the same to enter?

At Tour 2 each B tour team had 7 or 8, one hour games. The A tour teams
got
6 one hour and forty five minute games. That means that the A tour teams
get
at least 25% more pitch time than the B tour teams. (put another way the
A
tour had 8 pitches for 16 teams and the b tour had only 10 pitches for
26)
Given that pitch hire/marking is the single largest cost (50-75%) of
running
a tournament why isn't this difference in pitch time reflected in the
cost
of playing in the different tours? Why are the smaller, newer B tour
teams
expected to subsidise the larger, more established clubs in the A tour?

good internet site supplying First Aid supplies, ice packs, etc specifically
for sports teams called http://www.firstaid4sport.co.uk/. I ordered some
stuff through there last week, and got it delivered within 3 days for a
reasonable price.

The reason that I am telling you all about it is that they offer what they
call Loyalty Groups for their customers. Basically, if you join any group,
then you get a 5% discount, but if the group orders a large amount in the
future, that discount could go up to 20%. I have set up a loyalty group
called UK Ultimate Frisbee which anyone can join with the following
password: 7408977740. You will have to set yourself up as a user on their
website, but I think you could also get the discount on phone orders by
quoting the password. Any email to the loyalty group will go to myself,
rather than spamming Britdisc, and I will forward on any important notices
from them. So you can get the 5% discount straight away, and hopefully we
can build it up more.
Hopefully this will be helpful to people, and remind you all that you should
have some first aid cover for team practices, etc when you are in a public
park, etc.
Apologies if this isn't interesting to you.

[BD] RE: Tour 2 Entries

2004-04-30 Thread Andrew Godber
Well that's alright, can't we all just ignore the deadline again like at
Tour 1? That way everyone is happy, and no-one ever bothers with a deadline
for any tournament. It isn't as if we are always talking about raising the
professional-ness of the sport or anything :-)

[BD] Great Barr Crawl 3 Results

2004-01-27 Thread Andrew Godber
Hi there,

Last weekend saw the 3rd outing of the Great Barr Crawl indoor tournament in
sunny Birmingham. There was a big improvement in the level of play from the
previous years, and possibly the smallest social in Ultimate with only a
maximum of about 20 people. Despite that, everyone had a lot of fun, and
especially enjoyed a nail-biting final between Whiplash and an Angels-ish
team, that was taken 10-9 by Whiplash in sudden death. Thanks to all those
teams who took part, and a big thanks to all Slipdisc, uBu, X-SD, and WAS
and anyone else who helped set-up, run the score board, and clean up
afterwards.

Final results:

1. Whiplash
2. Angels
3. Disc Hunters
4. Red
5. Flyght Club
6. WAS
7. Lords of the Ring (Plate Winners + Spirit)
8. X-SD
9. Skumy
10. Bullet Proof Mwnci
11. Slipdisc
12. uBu

MVP from the final (Prize kindly donated by LookFly) - Tony from Whiplash.
Layout Prize - The tall bloke from Disc Hunters (Many apologies, as I
never found out your name!)
All Star Fantasy Game Points Winner - Si Barry (Angels) with 20 Fantasy
Frisbee points.

Lost property - I have now found the orange disc that someone from Red was
after, so get in touch with me about getting it back somehow.

Thanks again, and we hope to see you next year.

[BD] New Birmingham Geo-Team

2003-12-17 Thread Andrew Godber
Hi there,

I would like to briefly announce that a new Geo-Team is forming in the West
Midlands. The club will be formed primarily by players from Slipdisc, uBu
and Kamaya Maya (Stourbridge if you didn't know), but we will also welcome
anyone else from the West Midlands area who could committ to regular
practices in Birmingham or Stourbridge, and is willing to committ to the
club. If you are interested, then please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to find out more details. (NOT THIS ADDRESS)

[BD] Bids, etc

2003-12-08 Thread Andrew Godber
Seeing as there was a little bit of a minor discussion regarding Indoor bids
recently (which everyone hates anyway), I wondered if anyone had looked on
the UKU site and noticed that we only have 2.5 Tours at the moment, which
means only 2 events for non-Top 16 teams. This comes after a deadline for
bids of 6 weeks ago.

Again, should we be starting to worry? Are there some additional bids that
are under review/consideration for Tour 2 and Tour 3B, or do the UKU members
as a whole need to start looking for other/new venues? Perhaps some feedback
on this is necessary, as I would imagine it is harder to find an 8 pitch
grass venue that a sports hall.

RE: [BD] Re: Reasons for not voting

2003-03-31 Thread Andrew Godber
Title: RE: [BD] Re: Reasons for not voting

I don't think that is what Finn was getting at. If we only voted for our mates, then that would be crap.

What I think he was trying to get at is that the Ultimate community, while small enough to try to encompass everyone's views, is also big enough that there are lots of people that you have never heard of, let alone met or talked to. When most student players are at uni, they are a bit sheltered from the politics of the game, and it takes a while to get to know the issues, etc. This could be a reason why the voting figures are disappointingly pathetic.

I know that the manifestos try to get across a person's viewpoint and aims, but it still could be hard to spot whether a candidate is an excellent prospect, or just a raving megalomaniac. (for example)

Perhaps there are some more events needed like UKU public meetings, or at least evidence of board meetings, so that people get a chance to see who is helping them play their sport, and so that more people would be inclined to vote for/against people they have seen doing a good/bad job. Of course this relies on people making the effort to turn up to these things, but we all seem to get together for a whole weekend every now and then.

Must stop rambling now.

Thats just wack!!! you shouldn't vote for the people you know but the people
that want to do what you feel should be done. Thats what manifesto's are for
to give the intentions of the person.

This year I voted, but last year the reason I chose not to vote wasn't that
I didn't care but simply that I didn't know the people involved and didn't
want to f*** it up for everyone else. I'm sure that lots of people are in
this position this year, as the manifesto's in themselves don't give you
much to go on.

Regards,

Finn

P.S. not criticism or praise, just the way I see it.

RE: [BD] Champions League

2002-12-06 Thread Andrew Godber

For
the UK, why don't we have a play-off between the winners of all the Winter
Leagues, and then put the top one or two teams from that into the Champions
League each year? It would give 'all' teams something to aim for in the Winter,
as well as the Summer. It could also go someway to deciding which UK teams could
take the regional spots at the UK event.

Plus
we might be able to trickSky or BBCinto filming us by offering them
really cheap TV rights?

I am pleased to announce a
series of tournaments for 2003 that will get the cream of European ultimate
playing against eachother on a regular basis.

  Following discussions
amongst the major European teams at WUCC2002 (Hawaii) we have come up with a
"European Champions League" format: a series of 8-team invitational club
tournaments. The format is designed to increase the level of competition
amongst the top European teams and provide a yearly focus for club teams.

  Champions League
  3, Copenhagen (Denmark), 26/27 July

  This schedule is only
provisional at present. Each tournament will be attended by 6 member
teams, plus 2 regional teams. The member teams for 2003 are

  Clapham Ultimate, Chevron,
Skogsyddans, Ragnarok, Feldrenner, Flying Angels, Red Lights, Liquidisc and
HUT. This was based on discussions amongst teams in Hawaii.
  Somebody will be
contacting teams that are interested in taking one of the regional spots for
  each tournament.
