I love the responses.. they are all great.

Truth be known, just about every component on the trackers we fly today,
already come from China. We’re just sending them back to them. 

As far as the software/firmware, it’s Open Source, and published on multiple
publicly accessible github sites.

So that immediately gets around any potential ITAR restrictions that might come
into play.

Several other trackers are built in Turkey and other places overseas that also
have been cleared for sending to other countries.

So we’re all good.

Now, that’s not to say that someone couldn’t do something very different and
risk multiple violations of course, but I think we’re still several years away
from the IC’s we use in or devices being manufactured in the US, if they ever
do at all. And if they do, they will STILL be made over there as well, so
there’s nothing secret about these.

As far as the Mac machines, if anyone can make me a Mac that can come in
weighing less than 12 grams, I’ll take a thousand of those right now. 

this actually brings up a good point, it is illegal to send devices with very
current encryption to foreign nations, I know you would not think there is
anything on a balloon that is privileged but there are many things installed on
operating systems in the US that are not for export. I would think some care
should be used to make sure that a balloon once captured by the Chinese or
other nation, would not contain any proprietary software or encryption
algorithms.

just thinking out loud from a computer security point of view.

Quick Update……

After several weeks of flight from the BVARC Field Day site, it appears we
haven’t heard from the balloon in over a week now, so it’s probably down for
the count.

It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was
making. 

As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I
type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for
extracting and propagating the information into all the formal reporting sites.

So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in
Field Day with you guys.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Bruce,
I had just the reverse experience. Bought PDA. Worked erratically.
Crashed a lot. No support either by phone or email.

Moved to Dxlabs. Its free. Installed smoothly. Worked right out of the
box. Got help from the reflector. Which is also monitored by the
author. Regular updates which are also free. Go figure.

Subject: [BVARC] 2019 Quad Club Mega Field Day Event - Final

What a crazy weekend and Field Day! With nearly 4000 contacts (and hopefully
15,000 points) this has been the most productive Field Day ever for BVARC
and the Quad Club Mega Event. So many people this year worked tirelessly
through the Southeast Texas heat to make this year's Field Day the best
ever. Without their help this score would have not been possible. I want to
thank everyone for their hard work and determination on what they put
together for this year's event.

So, like every wrap-up notice on events like this, here are the "specs".

Station Class 10A
4 CW, 4 SSB and 4 Digital (1 - RTTY, 1 - FT-8)

Contacts Just under 4000
Still counting

Points Should be close to
15,000

Antennas3 - tri banders or
greater, 3 - 40/80 dipoles, 2 - 40 m 2 element, 2 beverage antennas, 1 6 M,
3 element, 1 - NVIS (and I know I missed one or two but I tried)

Coax about a million
miles of the stuff!

Mounts1 - 65' man lift, 1 -
50' man lift, 1 - 50' tower trailer, 1 - 20' aluminum tower

Communications Trailer 1 - Fort Bend County Emergency
Management/Homeland Security

Solar Station 1 - Thanks John

Operators A bunch of them!

BBQ Nearly 30 pounds
worth of brisket, sausage and turkey

Drinks about 30 cases

Crack Kitchen staff Three - Daphne, Kelli, Anita

Photographers about a dozen

The list can go on and on and on for all the people that helped out this
year. I personally want to thank Bill Cordell, W5VOM for his personal
donation of the man lifts, tee shirts and air conditioner as well as his
unbridled energy for Field Day this year. Bill's help has made this event
the crowning castle one in Houston and probably the state.

The rest of the event has so many other people that helped - Jimmy to Nizar
to Alan to John to Glen. There are so many to name I have lost track. Also
this year's food service was literally that best ever. Not only did no one
go hungry, we basically had zero left overs. With the individually service
of the food (thanks Daphne), the food was ordered and served to everyone
like a 5 star restaurant (will maybe 4 star!).

So now we all rest a few days and start planning for next year. This year is
that way to have Field Day and we should continue the direction we are
going.

Again I want to thank everyone for their hard work on the 2019 Quad Club
Mega Field Day event.

73,

Mike Hardwick, N5VCX

Ron, K5HM-

This is to confirm:

1. We heard your voice on the HF station, albeit the signal to noise ratio was
worse than from Houston ( duh.. ).

2. You managed to confuse Kelly, at first because he may or may not have
understood the words remote and how they work.

( Please do not quote me on this... ). The noise level was high due to
simultaneous 2m and hangar background tasks.

3. The results of approximately 100 contacts will be matched ( that is the plan
) with the QRZ.com database for sending an electronic mail confirmation. Please
ensure that your profile is correct for the e-mail account.

4. We really do appreciate you calling the station W1V --

5. Nice lamp ( your byline )- please do not repeat to my YL, Karen.

Re: [BVARC] FD thoughts

2018-06-26 Thread Ron Litt via BVARC
I agree with most all of te comments. WE need to have a way to recruit Phone
conesters. Most of the SSB ops seemed to be there just to see what it is like.
Not to contest. I have written to some folks at the Potomac Valley Radio club
and the Tennessee Contest group to get some ideas from them.

Also agree with Bill about people switching headsets. I found someone who had
done just that to my K3. Too bad for him. My radio, my rules. There are some
things that people should not mess with on other peoples gear.

Too many contest rookies. We need experienced SSB operators that know how to
run. I have a couple of ideas in that area but will outline it later. Too
late tonight.

For Field Day next year we will (or should):

1. Have Jeff Hoke from CenterPoint Energy come out several months before
FD and then again several weeks before.
2. Locate the main antennas East<->West of each other to minimize
interstation interference.
3. Route digital feed lines separate from CW feed lines.
4. Investigate the use of some portable A/C units.
5. Investigate the use of coax stubs to further reduce interstation
interference.
6. KEEP THE SAME COOK! (Great job on food!)
7. KEEP THE SAME NETWORK GUY! (Great job on computers, networking,
software, etc. We are really lucky to have you, Glen!)
8. Suggest either TDXS or BVARC purchase a new 2-el 40m beam.
9. Put CW antennas on highest manlifts.
10. Investigate the use of a manual switch to switch radios from mains to
generator (to eliminate last minute confusion…or) switch radios to generator
well before 1pm.
11. Make sure GOTA station operators know the rules.

I thought this was one of our best Field Days yet, due to the new location
(irrespective of noise). Hopefully we can work out the noise issues with
CenterPoint or fix whatever is making the noise in the house. The house and the
land were a big improvement over what we have had in the past. The
participation by other clubs (especially KARS) was a big plus. We may need to
make some more rules, especially with respect to moving headsets around in the
SSB room…or make sure all are setup the same way. We also need a greater push
with the SSB operators regarding operating technique to maximize rate (teach
them to run).

I am also dumbfounded and extremely disappointed in the lack of participation
by other TDXS members. I suggest we make a push again for next year, but we
need to start six months in advance so that they do not make other plans first.

I know I have other thoughts and will express them as soon as they come to the
front of my mind.

Like Scott, I had the over night shift. I started at the beginning and
finished around 4:30 AM- 5:00AM, when Nizar came to rescue me! I went home and
slept for a couple of hours, then went to Church. I returned about 1/2 hour
before the end with my wife (KD8CMB) and tried to get her to work a little SSB.
Alas, no luck, but she did sign in!!

I did not do much of the take down, except move some tables and chairs, as my
grandson decided to be born on June 25th, and he takes priority! We had his
7th birthday party at our place. Can you imagine a house full of kids, right
after field day, and having only a couple hours of sleep!!

I agree wholeheartedly with Nizar’s and Curt’s comments. I am somewhat
dumbfounded at the lack of participation from the TDXS, as I believe there were
approximately 6 of us in attendance,

Ham-radio enthusiast, Hezekiah Bambershoot, of Ft Jackson, was arrested
yesterday at police headquarters for disorderly conduct and assaulting a
police officer.Bambershoot initially came to headquarters reporting he had
been victimized by buying a radio from a mysterious Californian named Ellie
Craft.

Ms Craft allegedly took advantage of Bambershoot by claiming to have
down-conversion which he mistook for a syndrome of the same name.
Bambershoot was happy with his purchase until his friends told him all the
problems he should be having with his new radio.

According to Police spokesman, Ken Wood, The poor man was distraught and
raving about roofing filters. What the heck are roofing filters?

The arrest report filed by fellow-ham, Officer Ike Com, listed
Bambershoot's original complaint as radio mushiness but notes, I told
him all my radios sound mushy but he was upset he couldn't hear it on
his. When we tried to calm him down he became unruly.

Su Yae, an EMT called to the scene, defended Bambershoot saying, When I
got there they claimed he was making clicking noises with his keys but I
never heard any key-clicking.The poor man was just frustrated because his
purchase had so many faults he couldn't find.I feel sorry for him.

Bambershoot is being held on $10,000 bond.Police are still searching for
the elusive Ellie Craft.
