Re: [BVARC] Satellites -- 2m -- 70cm -- antennas

2024-05-12 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Richard,

Working Satellites can be a fantastic part of our great hobby.

And depending how deep your planning to get into it, can be as cheap as $20.00
to $100.00 for a very nice antenna.

Then you can use a dual band FM HT, BUT, this will only work late and night or
early in the morning, when your not competing for air time with the 50 and 100
watt satellite stations.

If you want the best experience possible, it can cost a few thousand dollars
real quick, for a nice satellite radio capable of LSB/USB full duplex, and a
pair of VHF/UHF beams with a nice az/el rotor.

We have been working with a few people over the past few days, using HT’s and
$15.00 antennas, to digipeat APRS packets via the ISS, with great success. For
a quick and simple example of entry level access.

The bottom line is, it doesn’t take a lot of money at all to test the waters,
but once you get bitten by the bug, like several of us, it will take a great
deal more $ for full station automation, and hands free operation. As well as
getting the maximum time on each satellite pass.

I hope you get the chance to give this a try, at any level, as it’s tons of fun.

And, as always, anything I can do to help, just give a yell. We can get you on
the birds, one way or the other.

To all...

As I go down the path of satalites and antennas, I have now realized how much I
really don't have a clue.

The things I need to learn about are :

1) Yagis -- how they work beyond the normal parts and basic point and listen.

2) satalites and orbits and solar winds and solar interference in general and
what it takes to track beyond software

3) up and down links -- beyond the 2m and 70cm frequency and how Doppler and
angle effects.

Basically -- looks to me that the magic smoke we work to keep in electronics is
also in the antenna.

Someone know where I can start to figure this stuff out. I am almost to the
point of calling Mr Daniel and CPT Jack .

Thank you for help in advance.

Re: [BVARC] Want to point

2024-04-12 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
I can’t speak for Gpredict, but when we’re using SatPC32, there is an
additional application called SUM, for Sun and Moon, that will track the SUN or
the MOON, so you can check and calibrate your system against.

So put on your Eclipse glasses, and line the antennas up with the sun, or wait
till later in the day and line it up with the moon.

Hope that helps,

Walter/K5WH

Subject: [BVARC] Want to point

I am designing a satellite PT mount for my satellite antenna. I know about not
pointing lasers at airplanes and I do NOT plan on that.

But what I am looking for is what pointer they use to show stars in the sky. I
want to use Predict and track Comm Satellite automatically. But what I also
want to do is point it out as the unit pans.

I am going to use a Yagi and mount it on top of that. I plan on having a 12v
battery to drive the unit. I also am going to use a .9 step angle motor with
57oz hold power. So the unit can not be very heavy. I also plan on using about
3 amp - 5 amps, for safety, say 8 amps with onboard computers and drivers. I
plan on using shielded cable in the antenna and to the radio. The frequencies
are from 137mhz to 440mhz.

I hope that is enough info to give me an idea.

And thoughts?

Here's Jerry's-N5EKO-130 balloon, the 2nd one he launched for the Greater

You can also see the estimated path as well, where it will come right back
over the Houston area.

Here's a link if you want to follow it yourself. Or you can capture it live

If they would ever turn back on the APRS digipeater on the ISS, that would
be a great way to work packet.

NO-44 is another packet digipeater satellite, however, it only works in the
daylight hours, as the batteries have failed some time ago. 145.825 is the
frequency to listen on.

So that immediately gets around any potential ITAR restrictions that might come

this actually brings up a good point, it is illegal to send devices with very
current encryption to foreign nations, I know you would not think there is
anything on a balloon that is privileged but there are many things installed on
operating systems in the US that are not for export. I would think some care
should be used to make sure that a balloon once captured by the Chinese or
other nation, would not contain any proprietary software or encryption
algorithms.

just thinking out loud from a computer security point of view.

Quick Update……

After several weeks of flight from the BVARC Field Day site, it appears we
haven’t heard from the balloon in over a week now, so it’s probably down for
the count.

It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was

As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I
type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for

So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in

As far as the software/firmware, it’s Open Source, and published on multiple

So that immediately gets around any potential ITAR restrictions that might come

Several other trackers are built in Turkey and other places overseas that also

So we’re all good.

Now, that’s not to say that someone couldn’t do something very different and

Quick Update……

After several weeks of flight from the BVARC Field Day site, it appears we
haven’t heard from the balloon in over a week now, so it’s probably down for
the count.

It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was
making. 

As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I
type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for
extracting and propagating the information into all the formal reporting sites.

So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in

Re: [BVARC] Raspberry Pi Digipeater - anyone with experience?

2023-07-12 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Terry,

I hope this doesn’t add more confusion than opportunity, but I would highly
recommend you start with about 3 or 4 micro-sd cards, 16g or larger, and try
several versions of this.

The absolute flexibility of the pi, is you can try an image out for a few hours
or days, then swap the card out for something completely different, and expand
your adventures all over again. Over and over.

Here’s just one of the many things you may want to explore.

If you burn this image, you get several dozens of ham radio applications all at
once for you to give a test drive with.

Ham Pi Image and there are others just like this

HamPi download | SourceForge.net

Home · dslotter/HamPi Wiki · GitHub

After you find some applications you really like, you may choose to load a
different image and only install the ones you care about. But it’s not at all
necessary.

Or, if you get like me, you end up with a dozen different pi’s running
different apps, and reload them at will when your ready to try out that next
really neat operating environment you just read about. 

The bottom line, it’s very cheap fun, most entertaining, and an endless number
of possibilities to peak your interests.

No doubt you will quickly discover many ways to consume several hours every
night of the week. 

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Funny. I was the one asking for joint brains to figure out how to do things.
I certainly can’t give a class since I am at pi ground zero.

I have a pi4 and loaded it with pi Linux. And monitor . Next is sound, and
then ham softwares , and then wires and cables to connect to radios. That’s
why this is a hobby. 

We can discuss tomorrow nite at the Bvarc meeting.

John has spent a lot of time with antenna modeling, and even did a

Im curious if anyone has had any luck using antenna modeling software. I
have installed several trial versions (including a fully licensed academic
version) and some have no support while others require a PHD in electrical
and mechanical engineering to operate. I'm looking for software that I can
draw up horizontally polarized wire antennas and then manipulate its various
positions with bends, turns, etc at different points to see the change in
theoretical radiation pattern, and someone who has experience using.

If you have any experience with such software, I am very interested in
learning how to fish.

It’s still flying high.

Every now and then we get some inconsistent reporting, so we get some bad data
at times.

But yes, it’s still doing well.

create the accurate altitude. It's still over 49k right now. Working well.

This is indeed VERY cool! I’m assuming that there is a high pressure over the

Chris,

I don't use the DVmega dongle, but I use the ThumbDV dongle, as well as 4
other Ambe servers I have setup here, all with BlueDV.

It seems to work fine on my PC, as well as my Android cell phone.

The installation should be a simple launch of the MSI file.

Not sure why you would get that error, unless you tried to install it into a
folder other than the default path. But that's a reach on my part.

Other than that, you might email David directly, as he's pretty good about
responding. But keep in mind he's in Europe, and it may not be till morning
before he sees the message.

Re: [BVARC] A unique opportunity in HF digital voice communications

2023-04-21 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
For Dstar, that’s a real issue, for using a repeater in our area here.

The last dedicated Dstar repeater in the Houston area was removed a couple
years ago.

There is however a few Multimode repeaters in the area, that support DMR,
Dstar, and Fusion, but the coverage is very limited at this time, while waiting
for a taller site to be relocated to.

There is one today in SW Houston on 145.47, but we are seeing some receive
sensitivity issues, and soon to replace the duplexers, but if your close enough
to the repeater it works on all of these modes. Unfortunately, the Internet
link is currently disconnected, so it’s not linked to anything at this time,
but still usable locally.

There are multiple Fusion repeaters in the Kingwood area, but also not linked
to the internet environment.

There is another Fusion repeater on the West side of town, I believe in the
Katy area if I have that right. I believe linked to WiresX.

There are dozens of DMR repeaters all over the Houston and Gulf Coast area.

But even if you can’t access a local repeater just yet, you can always get a
tiny hotspot, to connect to your home network, and support all of the popular
digital formats which will allow you to use the digital features of your radio.
Including cross mode capabilities, such as going in Fusion, and coming out DMR,
or DSTAR in and Fusion out, etc.. Prices are as variable as the features of
course. From under $50.00 to $400.00 and more.

Hope this helps understand more about this than adding confusion to the
question.  But feel free to ping me if I can add more detail for you.

[BVARC] FreeDV Activity Day - April 15-16, 2023

2023-04-14 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Fyi…

Walter/K5WH

Hi all,

This is a reminder that this month's FreeDV Activity Day is this coming
weekend. (As a reminder, Activity Day takes place on the third weekend of every
month.) This event will bring together people interested in HF digital voice on
the air for conversation and fun. Contacts using the official application
as well as the SM1000 handheld microphone and other
supporting devices and applications are welcome.

Event time: 12AM Pacific time (0700Z) on April 15 to 11:59PM (0659Z) on April
16 (48 hours).

Suggested frequencies:
80 meters: 3.625, 3.643, 3.693 or 3.697 MHz

60 meters (in countries where allowed): 5.4035 MHz or 5.3665 MHz
40 meters: 7.177 MHz
20 meters: 14.236 MHz or 14.240 MHz
17 meters: 18.118 MHz
15 meters: 21.313 MHz
12 meters: 24.933 MHz
10 meters: 28.330 or 28.720 MHz
10 GHz (for those in range of QO-100): 10489.640 MHz

(Note that LSB/DIGL is used below 10MHz as per current convention for voice
modes, USB/DIGU otherwise. 60 meters is of course USB/DIGU only.)

As this isn't a contest, there's no pressure to make contacts or send logs, but
you can always confirm QSOs via the usual means if you'd like (LoTW, eQSL, QRZ,
etc.) Enabling PSK Reporter in the FreeDV application and joining the QSO
Finder and Discord
are recommended, however, so others can see that you're on the air and hearing
them (for instance, here's the current map of listeners

 ). :D

Feel free to spread this far and wide among your local ham friends and groups!
:) Let me know if you have any questions about the event and definitely post
here if you have issues getting the application working prior to the event.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Sounds like a great project Marc,

I have built dozens of hotspots with ALL types of configurations on Pi-0w’s,
Pi3’s, Pi-4’s, with single and dual time slot versions.

As well as multiple display formats, OLED, Nextion, etc.. in different sizes
as well from .96” to 7”.

I even have a couple Shark Openspot versions for good measure.

Every one of them has their own share of advantages and disadvantages, as in
size, features, cost, availability, etc..

And total cost can range from $50.00 to $400+, and more expensive doesn’t
always mean better by any means.

If you need a good talkgroup to test on, please feel free to drop in on the
Amsat-98006 tg and say hi.

Many of us in the Houston area hang out there, whether you’re a heavy satellite

But a few of us have been working with an application that ONLY does ALE, and

ION2G is the app. Automatic Link Establishment, ALE 2G, ALE 4G, HF Radio, Ham

Re: [BVARC] Icom 52A

2023-01-26 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Gayle,

The last Dstar repeater in Houston was removed from service nearly 2 years ago.
As already mentioned.

But you can get a hotspot to allow access, and get you into the Dstar world
through the internet, in the interim.

We also have a Multimode repeater on the SW side of town that has DMR, Dstar,
and Fusion on it, on 145.47, but it’s currently no longer linked into the
internet at this time.

It’s also having an issue being de-sensed by itself, until we can get the
duplexers changed out, so you have to be pretty close to the repeater for that
to work.

I also have a pair of repeaters on the NW side here, that also support DMR,
Fusion, Dstar, Analog, and almost finished with M17 as well, but it’s currently
at the house here at only 30 feet until we get it to a much taller location in
a few months. So the range is only about 8 or 10 miles at this time.

While most all hotspots will let you cross mode from or to DMR and Fusion, only
the OpenSpot 3 or 4Plus support the ability to transcode from Dstar to the
other modes like DMR and Fusion.

There are some reflectors and talkgroups that are bridged, so if you can get to
one of those, you could be liked to other environments as well.

Ie.. I have the following environments bridged together at this time for the
Amsat environments. DMR-Amsat-98006, YSF-Fusion-US-Amsat-11689, and Dstar
REFSAT, DCSSAT, XRFSAT, and XLXSAT, on module C. So if you access ANY of
these, you will be transcoded to ALL of the others.

Sorry for the long answer to your simple question, but I hope it helps.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

2023-01-15 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Fyi…

Join us next weekend, to see what digital voice over HF is like.

There is a new 2020C mode available for testing to improve the voice quality,
and a new interface called an EZdv box, that makes a wireless connection to an
IC-705, and no computer needed, to get on the air with FreeDV.

Another new feature recently added called EZ-Config, to help first time
installers get the audio and comms right, faster.

And if your going to to Orlando’s Hamcation in a few weeks, you will get to see
some of these in person during a presentation than Mooneer-K6AQ is giving.

Subject: [digitalvoice] [Announcement] FreeDV Activity Day - January 21-22, 2023

Event time: 12AM Pacific time (0800Z) on January 21 to 11:59PM (0759Z) on
January 22 (48 hours).

Finder are recommended, however, so others can see
that you're on the air and hearing them (for instance, here's the current map
of listeners

 ). :D

Feel free to spread this far and wide among your local ham friends and groups!
:) Let me know if you have any questions about the event and definitely post
here if you have issues getting the application working prior to the event.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

2022-07-31 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Fyi…

This has always been a great way to see what Digital Voice sounds like over
marginal band conditions that even SSB signals can’t make it through.

14.236 is the most active frequency, but others are being used, especially when
things get busy.

Hope you get the chance to give FreeDV a try.

We have also been doing this via the linear satellite at times, so sync up with
us if you want to test the waters there too.

See you there……

Re: [BVARC] W3FGP-11 is ALIVE!

2022-05-07 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
About 700+ days is the longest one I have heard of.

There are a couple up there right now, that have been around the planet 7 and
19 times.

To make it a single time is quite a feat itself. Going longer that that is
already plenty amazing.

The K5WH-88 balloon just started squawking over Northern California on it’s 2nd
lap.

The tracker and balloon technology have just recently made some great
improvements, making this possible today.

The local group has about 20 trackers on hand right now, so we can expect to
see a LOT more launches in the next few weeks.

One of our Zoom-Mates working with us on the balloon launch adventures.

All of these floater balloons are using Hydrogen. Many times cheaper, and much
better lift properties, even though it’s a little harder to get your hands on
it.

Compared to helium that is.

Hi all,

Due to popular demand, we'll be doing another FreeDV Activity Day on Saturday,
February 19, 2022! This event will bring together people interested in HF
digital voice on the air for conversation and fun. Contacts using
the official application as well as the SM1000 handheld
microphone are welcome.

Event time: 9AM Pacific time (1600Z) on February 19th to 8:59AM (1559Z) on
February 20th (24 hours)

Suggested frequencies:

80 meters: 3.625, 3.643 or 3.693 MHz

40 meters: 7.177 MHz

20 meters: 14.236 MHz

17 meters: 18.118 MHz

15 meters: 21.313 MHz

12 meters: 24.933 MHz

10 meters: 28.330 or 28.720 MHz

(Note that LSB/DIGL is used below 10MHz as per current convention for voice
modes, USB/DIGU otherwise.)

As this isn't a contest, there's no pressure to make contacts or send logs, but
you can always confirm QSOs via the usual means if you'd like (LoTW, eQSL, QRZ,
etc.) Enabling PSK Reporter in the FreeDV application and joining the
QSO Finderare recommended, however, so others can see
that you're on the air and hearing them (for instance, here's

the current map of listeners). :D

Feel free to spread this far and wide among your local ham friends and groups!
:) Let me know if you have any questions about the event and definitely post
here if you have issues getting the application working prior to the event.

Thanks,

Re: [BVARC] Doppler updates for SatPC32 and FT4

2022-02-16 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
This is a follow-up to a message I sent out late last night. As I
duplicated the entries below with the -D as needed for the Icom radios to
place them into Digital modes from SatPC32.

We were taking yesterday about the potential risk of contention with the
normal ssb users of the sats, and in an effort to try to error on caution, a
few of us put together a list that has a transponder bandwidth greater than
the 20khz. Some have 30, 50, and even 100 wide.

Taking the bottom 5khz, it should provide plenty of elbow room there.

Perhaps another 5khz above these could be used for other digital modes like
FreeDV, Vara, and narrow and fast digital modes off all types.

We went through several passes last night on FT4 and the seemed to work, but
I would like more of your testing feedback to see if this gives us the
results we need.

Phillipe,

We have helped multiple people get their 9700 on the air with DSTAR very
easily, but it was NOT using the terminal mode.

It was by using a hotspot.

Let me look, but I think I have a config file from someone that was indeed
setup for Terminal mode..

about it, including presentations that Mooneer and myself have given recently
at different conferences, so check them out.

If anyone should get stuck on the configuration setup, please feel free to let
us know on the FreeDV QSO finder (link down below) or join us on my ZOOM

This is considered a VOICE mode, even though it's using a digital protocol,
and not considered a digital mode.

So it follows the normal voice standards. Ie.. USB and LSB as you change

I wouldn't be surprised that someone didn't argue the use of this on 30
meters. After all, it's converted to digital before transmitting and then
converted back after the receiver so technically, it's a digital
transmission. What you do with it before and afterward is irrelevant.. Or
IS it?

Any thoughts from the Elmers?

Thanks,

Re: [BVARC] Icom 9700 D-star setting issues

2021-08-08 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
There are countless hotspots available that will support DMR, YSF, Fusion,
DSTAR, NXDN, P25, etc…

For less than $50.00 for many, all over Ebay. Look for the MMDVM hotspots, that
plug onto a Raspbberry Pi-W, or Raspberry Pi 3b. And multiple case and display
modes available as well.

You can also do crossmodes, like DMR to YSF-Fusion, and between all the other
modes (EXCEPT DSTAR).

The only hotspot available today that will support cross modes to and from
DSTAR is the SharkRF Open Spot 3, but they are very expensive, at nearly
$400.00 with shipping.

But it does have multiple other attractive features, like an integrated battery
that lasts for at least 10 hours. Very handy if your going mobile or portable.

I have well over a dozen different hotspots of all flavors, as I try them all
out to compare their features against the others, and 99% of them are exactly
the same, except for the display or case being used.

So the bottom line is, you can’t go wrong with ANY of them. But just like cars,
there are plenty of options available, depending on your personal needs.

Please feel free to ping me if you want to drill deeper into any of these specs
or options, or if you should need any assistance getting them configured.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

John,

Unfortunately, we have not started back the normal Wednesday lunch meetings
over there at Papas, since they shut down the internal seating last year.

Things are opened back up now just fine, and there’s been some chatter about
getting them restarted, but so far, it just hasn’t happened.

Many of those same people are still meeting in NW Houston on Tuesdays, that I
can send you the details on of your interested.

All the best,

Just take the speaker audio from the HT to the computer. And your good to go
with MMSSTV.

It works very well for that. Like from the ISS starting next week.

I downloaded the MMSSTV software, the laptop has a sound card. Just not too

A few have responded to my email regarding interest in attending a Skeeters
game and expressing interest in either Sunday or Thursday. In any event we
would need to have a MINIMUM or 20 tickets to make a difference in the
pricing which is also day dependent.

Here is a little more information on what goes on EVERY Sunday and EVERY
Thursday.

SUNDAY - Kids Run the BASES after the game. VERY popular with families

THURSDAY - $1 hotdogs, $2 draft beer and sodas

If Interested in attending as a group please respond so that I can get back
to you with potential home dates in June or July. If you have a month
preference, please let me know.

2020-04-23 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Yes indeed, it will be recorded, and the existing recordings are currently
located at http://www.k5wh.net/armg/

It takes quite a while after the session to complete the conference recording
to be converted to the MP4 format, so it will be ready either late that night
or the following morning.

All the best.

Re: [BVARC] Dstar/1st Radio Questions

2020-04-16 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
The D74 is an outstanding radio indeed, for MANY things like APRS and Satellite
activity, and especially to RECEIVE the linear ssb satellites on vhf and uhf.

The only DSTAR repeater in our area is near the down town area, so depending on
your proximity to that, it might take a bit of effort.

Although we do have a multimode repeater on the SW side of town, that we still
need to improve the receive side some more. DMR, DSTAR, Fusion supported.

Using a hotspot certainly solves those type of issues.

But keep this in mind when trying to choose the right hotspot.

You can get the great Zumspot and Jumbospot units for about $119 or as little
as $50, but you will be limited to DSTAR only with that radio.

If you spend a bit more, you can get the SharkRF OpenSpot 3, for about $250, so
you can go in DSTAR, and come out DMR, Fusion, P25, NXDN, and of course DSTAR,
etc..

So it really does depend on where your ultimately trying to go, as to how much
you may need to spend.

Also keep in mind, you can get a separate DMR radio for a little over $200 for
the high end, or under $100 for some very good working radios with a few less
features.

Kind of like buying a car, or some HF radio, plenty of options to choose from,
and nothing says you have to spend all the money up front, as you can buy each
component, one at a time, to further enhance your digital radio experience
along the way as you choose to get deeper into it.

Hope that helps, all the best.

Re: [BVARC] DMR interest

2020-03-01 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Jeff,

You may have better luck on the Local or Houston-Metro talk groups, on the
repeaters here in the Houston areas. And I can work with you on the testing of
that if you want to get on the Hou-Metro talkgroup.

Since I live in far NW Houston, my best access is via the Cypress repeater.
Yours is probably better with Transtar.

I have some VERY extensive codeplugs for TYT and Anytone Radios that I can send
you, that has most of the DMR repeaters in the whole state of Texas.

As well as a fill list of Analog repeaters.

Included are a large block of Talkgroup channels for use on hotspots too, that
would give you a many times larger selection of talkgroups. But both have
their place of course.

I know you can’t load one of these codeplugs, since that radio uses a .DAT
instead of the normal . RDT file extension and the layout of the data is quite
different, but I have them exported as CSV files, if you would like to try to
use part of this data to build your Codeplug that way.

If you need some assistance in how to create the Codeplug in general, I can
help you there as well.

Let me know where I can help you the most.

All the best,

Re: [BVARC] Untangling My (Your's too) Understanding of DMR

2020-02-14 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Larry,

If your having a question about your DMR radio not working properly, please
feel free to reach out to me and I’ll be glad to help you work through the
issue.

I have multiple code plugs available that are very up to date for the whole
state of Texas, for Repeaters and hotspots, for the TYT and Anytone radios if
that will help you as well.

There have been plenty of recent changes with Brandmesiter that has broken
links between the systems available on local repeaters in our area, so you may
see some of those issues as well.

If your trying DMR via a hotspot then you have a far greater set of options for
talkgroups, ie.. 1450+ versus about 7 on the local repeaters.

But do let me know which radio you have, and where I can help you the best, and
we can get you going plenty fast enough.

All the best,

I want to understand the technology and more importantly the application and
just how this fits into the Ham Radio world that I know. I found that not
knowing the nomenclature or terminology was my biggest road block. (ie Code
Plug, Zones, etc.)

So I found this web page article -- link below. It is all inclusive and it is
succinct. Gets to the point in an informational flow that makes sense and easy
(for me, an analog ham) to understand. Hope it does for you too.

Remember, please, this is not analog radio, it is digitized voice and control
data bit streams being modulated to be sent over an RF channel. Kind of like
RTTY but much faster. All set-up, controlled and delivered to the DMR network
via the Internet and computer hardware and software. (C-Bridges, etc.)

It's all Ham Radio and, therefore, should be fun. That's my goal, anyway.

Re: [BVARC] Balloon launch

2019-12-18 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
Alex,

There is probably not much to see on these floater balloon launches, like the
BIG High Altitude package that gets launched from Wharton each September.

The floaters just get gassed up and carefully let go. Then it’s just watching
the screen for hours, days, or longer on their progress. 

Check out the ZOOM video conferencing session of you want to see some of what
is happening remotely.

There should be several others from around the country to report real time on
the what is being seen or heard.

Hope that helps,

Walter/K5WH

Hello this is Alex and I have a question about the balloon launch event. Do you
go to the event or do you just receive the signal?

Thank You,

Alex

Subject: West Gulf Division Director Ballot Delivery Delays

Greetings ARRL South Texas Section Members,

Some folks have not received their West Gulf Division Director Election
Ballot yet.

The delays are related to damage at a US Postal Service sorting facility
in Houston caused by storms in late September.

ARRL HQ released this statement addressing the delays and process to get
a replacement ballot...

From: Henderson, Dan N1ND mailto:dhender...@arrl.org> >
Date: Wed, Oct 16, 2019 at 10:59 AM
Subject: RE: West Gulf Division Ballot

Wednesday October 16, 2019

ARRL has become aware of a mail delivery problem affecting the ARRL
Board of Director election ballots sent to members in part of the West
Gulf Division. Recent flooding has affected some US Postal Service
distribution centers in the Houston region of the state, damaging some
sorting machines. This is delaying delivery to many members in that
area. They are processing mail out, but there are delays in processing
out bulk mail, which include the ballots. We are aware that ballots are
being processed as part of their work flow, but they cannot give us a
definitive date of when they will all be out for delivery.

All ballots were mailed from Hartford on Monday September 30 as required
by the Articles of Association/By-Laws. Ballots to most of the West Gulf
Division were delivered in the usual time frame, which is generally 10
to 14 days.

We have received numerous requests for replacement ballots. We also have
member notifications sent after making the replacement ballot request to
inform us the ballot had arrived. We ask ARRL members to be patient.

If you still do not receive your ballot by Monday October 21, 2019,
please send a request for a new ballot to n...@arrl.org
. The ARRL HQ
will process out replacement requests on Tuesday October 22, 2019 via
first class mail and daily as later requests come in. That will allow 3+
weeks (24 days) for the replacement to be delivered to you and allowing
for their return to ARRL’s accounting firm of CohnReznick LLP by the
noon on Friday November 15, 2019 deadline.

There is no deadline for requesting a replacement ballot. Also, there is
no deadline for you to have received your ballot in order to be eligible
to vote. Please note that all replacement requests need to be in writing
(email is fine) but must directly come from the ARRL member.
Third-party requests cannot be processed.

If you have already requested a replacement ballot but still haven’t
received the original ballot by October 21st, you will need re-confirm
your need for a replacement by email to n...@arrl.org .
If your original
ballot is received before that time, we also ask you confirm that to
n...@arrl.org so that your request can be closed.

We thank you for your patience in this unusual situation. If you have
any questions, please contact ARRL Assistant Secretary Dan Henderson,
N1ND, at n...@arrl.org or by phone at 860-594-0236.
