Re: [BVARC] banquet overpriced? NO!

2024-01-11 Thread Mike Lambert via BVARC
Hi Mike,

No offense taken. We all have different experiences.
You describe some particularly bad banquet fares. I wouldn't want to go to
those either!

Last month I went to another radio club resturant get together.
But, as usual in a resturant setting, by the time you get your food, its cold.
The way it works for large groups in a resturant, its just too many meals to be
all delivered hot while the cooks see to your group AND also see to the rest of
the resturant patrons.
Its just the nature of the beast...

Last Dec 15th (a Friday night) I went to a banquet.
Attire was from Tuxedo down to Suit, white shirt and tie.
Professional caterers know how to do it right.
The food was excellent!! Multiple courses were served.
Servers in formal uniforms served each table of 8 directly from the caterer
chef.
Hot and delicious.
After dinner we were served desert and hot coffee, and then the awards were
given.
It was a banquet, not just dinner. A very nice evening indeed!

Being special is what a banquet is. Otherwise its just lunch. (my opinion)

Lastly, Mike N5VCX,
Just My Opinion,
a banquet is on Saturday evening, not a weekday after work (and at rush hour).

Have a good day,
Mike KI5MIK

I respectfully disagree.
I have been to a least 20+ "Banquets" with various organizations. At each and
every one of them had cold dry chicken breast and another dry entree.

I say let's go to a restaurant, pay for our own food and get what we like.

The awards are an honor but not a coronation.

If I have offended anyone I am sorry, but I had to offer my opinion.

If the banquet is a distinctive occasion meant for acknowledging individuals,
it's imperative that we choose an elegant venue with excellent cuisine,
steering clear of a casual gathering at the local cafeteria. The lack of
enthusiasm from attendees might stem from reasons beyond those who are either
out of town or unable to drive.

BVARC is transitioning to prioritize catering for events, consistently
encountering concerns related to the quality of food, particularly during
meetings or special occasions. Labeling an event as an "Annual Banquet" should
inherently hold a sense of uniqueness and significance.

If cost is a primary consideration, it is suggested to organize informal
gatherings for cost-effective dining experiences with friends at the local
cafeteria. Given the substantial financial investments made in Ham Radio
equipment, it's perplexing to fret over a mere $35 annual expenditure for
special events.

Re: [BVARC] banquet overpriced? NO!

2024-01-11 Thread K5BOU via BVARC
Mike, I have been in the high-end culinary world for 30 years and completely
disagree with your feedback. We can serve juicy chicken. Remember you get what
you pay. When you paid $35 only 25% are the cost of food , siu when you have
$8.50 to buy product don’t expect to buy high end products.

What happened to that type of Award Banquet? I don't see why y'all don't do
something like this? Another one of the great things the club used to do
but wont do again. Check out this link and look at the past banquet Pics.

[BVARC] Banquet

2024-01-11 Thread Mike Knerr via BVARC
I looked at Cleaborn Cafeteria's menu and it seems to have anything one
would want to eat (even broccoli).
They have private room that will seat 40 people.
I can't remember how many were at the last banquet.

Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

Re: [BVARC] banquet overpriced?

2024-01-11 Thread Chris Medlin via BVARC
My comment about Golden Coral was meant to be tongue in cheek and not a serious
location idea.

Its also my understanding that there is a sizable new population of club
members over the last year or so (me included due to geographic relocation).
And with the possibility that some of the older/aging population not being able
to get out at night, maybe the lower turn out may be from lack of knowledge of
the event from a core of the membership population who havent been to one of
the banquets before.
Maybe there was a write up that I missed, and if so, apologies in advance for
my ignorance. But if not, maybe overall assumptions are there because its an
annual event that everyone knows about. What is the banquet, what is the dress,
what can one expect to see there? Are there options for people who want to
attend but are not eating? How long does it run into the night? For those
planning to eat, what is the full menu items? And back to the aging members,
Are there options for people with dietary restrictions?

Maybe these type of things in a FAQ would be helpful to socialize the event and
make sure that all members are on the same page.

Just dropping my $0.02 of helpful feedback.

If cost is a primary consideration, it is suggested to organize informal

Re: [BVARC] banquet oVeRpRiCeD?

2024-01-11 Thread Mike Hardwick via BVARC
Actually the pricing was set-up several years ago to make Banquet
self-supporting and that is how is has been for the last several years.
As for the past venues, let me bring up some of the issues that people said
about those top venues
Maggianos - Crowded, food delivered cold, wrong orders, food taking too long to
bring out to the table, expensive, not the best for the price to name a few.
The JW Marriott (this was one of the best places, it is a great place to a hold
banquet) - portions were small for the price, space was limited,
With the comments about having the Awards Banquet, it seems like more people
would be happy with something as local cafe or cafeteria. This is something
that I do not connect to a banquet.

Golden Coral is a favorite of hams nationwide.
Go to any hamfest anywhere and youll find hams packing the Golden Coral. Super
cheap and super bland. Thats all ya need right?
But plan accordingly because the Eating Club usually shows up at about 2pm.

Hello BVARC members and friends,
I wanted to jump in here with another push for folks to sign up and support the
banquet. It's a very important event throughout the history of the club, and
it's looking like we may have to change our plans this year if we don't have
enough banquet reservations. I know that many of our members have reasons that
prevent them from attending. I absolutely understand that, and regardless we
thank you all for being members. If you can make it out we would really
appreciate having you join us at the banquet. We will move forward one way or
another, but I hope we can get at least another dozen or more to sign up so we
can follow through with the event at Bayland Community Center, and honor those
who have helped out with the club and the hobby.
Please get in your nominations before Sunday (you don't have to attend the
banquet to provide those), and I hope to see many of you at the banquet. Have a
great weekend, and again, thank you all for supporting the club by being
members and hanging out with us at our events. 73!
Again the awards up for nominations are below and the links to sign-up for the
banquet dinner are on the homepage at BVARC.org. The extended deadline is
Sunday January 7th.
The Loop and Zepp Award - This award is presented to the club member that has
exhibited outstanding service in HF operation and use.

The K1JT Award - This award is presented to the club members that have
exhibited outstanding service in VHF and above operation and use.

The Dr Bill Award - This award is presented to the club member that has
exhibited outstanding service as a Volunteer Examiner.

The Order of the Key Award - The club’s highest award. This award is presented
to the one club member that has exhibited outstanding service for the club and
amateur radio.

Send your nominations to Mike Hardwick N5VCX or any other board member to be
counted.

2024-01-05 Thread Kori Rahman via BVARC
Hello BVARC members and friends,

I wanted to jump in here with another push for folks to sign up and support
the banquet. It's a very important event throughout the history of the
club, and it's looking like we may have to change our plans this year if we
don't have enough banquet reservations. I know that many of our members
have reasons that prevent them from attending. I absolutely understand
that, and regardless we thank you all for being members. If you *can *make it
out we would really appreciate having you join us at the banquet. We will
move forward one way or another, but I hope we can get at least another
dozen or more to sign up so we can follow through with the event at Bayland
Community Center, and honor those who have helped out with the club and the
hobby.

Please get in your nominations before Sunday (you don't have to attend the
banquet to provide those), and I hope to see many of you at the banquet.
Have a great weekend, and again, thank you all for supporting the club by
being members and hanging out with us at our events. 73!

Again the awards up for nominations are below and the links to sign-up for
the banquet dinner are on the homepage at BVARC.org. *The extended deadline
is Sunday January 7th.*

*The Loop and Zepp Award* - This award is presented to the club member that
has exhibited outstanding service in HF operation and use.

*The K1JT Award* - This award is presented to the club members that have
exhibited outstanding service in VHF and above operation and use.

*The Dr Bill Award* - This award is presented to the club member that has
exhibited outstanding service as a Volunteer Examiner.

*The Order of the Key Award* - The club’s highest award. This award is
presented to the one club member that has exhibited outstanding service for
the club and amateur radio.

*Send your nominations to Mike Hardwick N5VCX or any other board member to
be counted.*

If you have not made a reservation for the BVARC Banquet on Jan. 13th , you
still have a few more days. Due to the overwhelming response to the event,
I decided to extend the time for reservations until JANUARY 10th .

Remember you must have your reservation in by close of business on that
date. You can pay by PayPal, Credit card or check . Go to BVARC,org for
the menu. Tickets are $30 per person.

Our guest speakers will be Linda Litt (you all know how great she was last
time ) to update you on the life of a Real Ham Radio Wife. You will not see
this on cable or YouTube!

She will introduce our other speaker, The "Vin Scully of Southeast Texas
Baseball and voice of the Sugar Land Skeeters, Ira Liebman!

So don't miss it. Who doesn't love Baseball and Ham Radio?
