[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma
Hi All, I thought I might way in on this discussion about whether birds are disturbed by people out of their cars. As a photographer, I can say it most certainly does. Anytime that people are out of their vehicles, the birds are gone or moved a considerable distance away when I have been in the wake of this behavior. I find it is both photographer and birders with scopes that are guilty of this. Personally, things viewed with a scope are not of interest to me, so yes, it does make a difference if people out of cars push the birds further away. I find that no one seems to be enforcing the rule as it stands because people have told me that the refuge vehicles drove by them and did not say anything. It has been very frustrating to photograph anything especially this year with this turn of events, so I too would like clarification of what is allowed. If people did stay in their car, it would allow for others to see more in my opinion. I know in other areas, birds are less shy, but it does not seem to be the case here. I realize that most people are unaware that they change things by not staying in their car, but I think I get my best opportunities and views if I practice patience and keeping a low profile using my vehicle as a blind. Re: [cayugabirds-l] MNWR Caspian Terns and pedestrians on the Wildlife Drive :(
I don't remember anyone addressing this long standing annoyance in the manner I mention below and I think its worth a try: Perhaps the bird clubs in the region could each submit thoughtful petitions to the director of mnwr requesting a policy change. If Chris didn't mind one might also originate with this list serve. It would be difficult for a public servant to ignore several hundred signatures behind a group of thoughtfully worded letters and It should at least generate a response and get a dialogue going. RE: [cayugabirds-l] MNWR Caspian Terns and pedestrians on the Wildlife Drive :(
Hello All, Again this is up for discussion, normally we say nothing but feel that Meena needs some support. We have been to many reserves, parks, nature centers, and national parks where the freedom to observe is not resticted yet in our own back yard we are not allowed to get of our vehicle on wildlife drive or walk our tax supported wildlife areas like Knox-Marcellus. We feel it is ridiculus to restrict observers to their vehicles, we have never seen any type of distress inflicted on the wildlife by getting out of a vehicle that is not already inflicted by Eagles, falcons and Harriers to name a few. Most people are very respectful of the wildlife and other observers with a very small percentage who seem to be oblivious there are others on the drive by parking in the middle of the road. The thing you all should be addressing is those that do not respect the speed limit! [cayugabirds-l] Black Skimmer Friday - No
The Black Skimmer found by John Germain and seen Wed and Thurs on Fulton's Lake Neatahwanta was not seen on Friday. Observers were present from 4pm until 9pm. I'm not suggesting it's gone or won't come back - the lake itself seems good for it but does not have a lot of loafing areas. Here's a link to a cell-phone photo of John's camera screen. The bird was perched on a concrete drainage pipe on the frontage road (Barrett Dr) in the northeast corner of the lake just south of the bend in Rte 3. John also saw it skimming the near-shore areas. https://www.flickr.com/photos/krankykestrel/ Dave Wheeler N.
