Re: [cayugabirds-l] Redpoll flock in Caroline, briefly

2019-02-24 Thread annemariejohn...@frontiernet.net
The redpolls may still be in the area but on the ground. I've seen a couple of
brief swirls of small, light-colored birds in tall grasses near the trees where
I first saw them. I'm not sure there are any good vantage points to view this
area, and they aren't flushing much, but perhaps they will shift to some of the
other fields in the area that are closer to roads.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Redpoll in Trumansburg

2019-01-23 Thread Diane Morton
Hi Jared,
Having a Common Redpoll come to your feeder is pretty special. We don't
have Common Redpolls here every winter, so we've all been out enjoying them
in the couple of spots that they've frequented this season.
2015 was the last time we had an irruption of Common Redpolls. The eBird
reports you see reflect that - for the whole Finger Lakes region.

I hope your Redpoll visits you again!

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll in Trumansburg

2019-01-23 Thread jaredwdawson
Hello, I’m a birder from California and a new resident of Trumansburg, so it
will take some time to learn status and distribution in this area.
My wife and I went out yesterday for the redpoll flock as reported in southern
Seneca Co, and dipped on them, but this morning the 23rd was pleased to have a
male Common Redpoll at my feeder.
Looking at eBird for all dates, I see that there were a number of sightings
here in the village at one site during 2013 and 2015, but no others. I suspect
that this is from a lack of observers, or eBird reports, or could they be that
unusual?
Good birding...

Re: [cayugabirds-l] REDPOLL FLOCK TRIPHAMMER TERRACE

2015-02-14 Thread Tom
Way outside the basin!

We've seen a total of 3 redpolls at our Lansing place, but as I type here in
our camp near Old Forge, NY, I've counted no fewer than 15 right around the
feeder. That's my GBBC number, but they are so active they're hard to count.
There may be twice that many in the trees nearby around other corners of the
camp.

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll in Ithaca proper

2015-02-12 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Maybe the REDPOLL are finally beginning to trickle into our urban
environs from out of the sticks! A while ago I had two birds briefly
pop into our yard (120 Vine Street). They may have been concerned with
the frenzied feeding activity of the many larger birds at our feeders
and decided to look elsewhere, as I have not seen them since. I sure
hope they decide to return, and I hope others of you in the city will be
fortunate enough to have them come to your feeders.

stays. It's not too often we get a new yard bird these days, and

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll, finally

2013-01-05 Thread nutter.dave
On Thursday Isort ofjoined the club, even though I can't claim big flocks are coming to my feeders, and I don't worry about what they consume. When I went out for a walk that afternoon the first bird I saw fly up from the ground behind my next door neighbor's house turned out to be a COMMON REDPOLL. According to the list on our fridge it was a new species for my yard ever. I can't compete with my neighbors' bird feeding operation, and even though it is a challenge to see from my yard, I get a good deal of enjoyment from it.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll and Siskin at feeder

2012-02-25 Thread Geo Kloppel
The 30-some Am. Goldfinches that regularly jostle for perches at my
little 4-perch niger feeder are joined this morning by one COMMON
REDPOLL and one PINE SISKIN!

The Redpoll perched at the feeder and couldn't be dislodged, while
the Siskin and most of the Goldfinches were obliged to rumage for
fallen seeds below.

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll sp, Mud Lock Sunday (15 Jan.) morning

2012-01-15 Thread Wesley M Hochachka
Hi everyone,

Eduardo Inigo kindly invited my along for an around-the-lake trip with
himself and Maikel Canizares (visiting PhD student, now at the Lab of
Ornithology), and while filling out my eBird checklists from the trip I noticed
that we seem to have found the first COMMON REDPOLL for the basin this year.
We heard (and saw as a dot in the sky) a fly-over redpoll at the Mud Lock boat
launch area on the north end of Cayuga Lake, and given the relative abundance
of the two redpoll species I am presuming that it was a Common Redpoll. As I
noted, this was a lone, fly-over bird that did not appear to land anywhere near
where we were standing, so who knows whether it is still in the area, or the
Basin for that matter. Be that as it may, it appears that there are redpolls
for the counting somewhere in the Basin in the 2012 part of this winter.

I think that the only other birds of note were a small flock of HORNED LARK
with a lone LAPLAND LONGSPUR just east of the Ovid Airport, in fields to the
south of Parish Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll subspecies link

2011-01-14 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

Here's a great link to the best photos I've ever seen showing the 4 North
American Redpoll subspecies (2
Common and 2 Hoary). Take notice of the very large Greater Common Redpoll.
I've seen at least a good 6-
7 of these in CNY over the years. They stick out. They all aren't quite
this large, but the large size is
something to key into. They are often intermediate in size between a
nominate Common Redpoll and a
House Finch.

Thanks to Dave Wheeler for emailing this link to me.

cheers,
Matt Young

2010-12-08 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

At the house in Scott this morning were singles of COMMON REDPOLL and PINE
SISKIN in with the flock of
40+ Goldfinches. The female PILEATED WOODPECKER (Red-bellied too) has
started to come into the suet
feeders for the 3rd winter in a row, a CAROLINA WREN has been frequent
since the snow hit (34 inches
since Saturday), and the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, among other common birds,
continue to be seen
daily.

cheers,
Matt
