Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe--No, Montezuma Main Pool
Tried again for the grebe on the Main Pool this morning, again without success. I did finally find a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE out on the far side of the goose flock. Yesterday picking Livia up from the Syracuse airport we found a well-marked SNOWY OWL sitting on a snow pile north of the overflow parking lot. Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe
To elaborate more on the grebe's position: Tim and I were looking from the Swan Pen at Stewart Park when I spotted the grebe this morning. From Stewart Park, if you look to the northeast along the east shore, you'll see a squat, yellow shed near a break in the trees where the road is visible. The grebe was swimming around there looking back and forth. For the last five minutes we were there, the grebe was swimming alongside a Red-throated Loon for a great comparison. Also present was a gorgeous adult male CANVASBACK, in the canal next to the boathouse. I've never seen one so close. -Brad On Fri, Feb 17, 2012 at 8:02 AM, Brad Walker edgarallenhoo...@gmail.comwrote: The grebe is currently swimming around a bit to the north of East Shore Park. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park
Thanks, Brad! I arrived at E. Shore Park an hour after your posting and was able to see the Western Grebe in the distance towards that bluish-gray piling with a light that is north from the red lighthouse. The W. Grebe was still close enough to see with just binocs. It stood up in the water and flapped its wings, then a few minutes later, flew a bit towards Stewart Park. All the photos people have posted helped me to identify the bird. I drove over to the park to get a different view, but did not see it again even though I went from one end to the other. Maybe it went into the Inlet? thanks again, it is a life bird for me! RE: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park
This repeated sighting of a single grebe vs. two grebes together makes me think there are/were three birds on the lake. But I must also say this, past Saturday I was sitting at Myers and watching bird movements, some seemed very random, but I watched lots of Common Mergansers head to south-end of the lake and they were flying quite high and sometimes not visible without binoculars, but they seemed to be heading further south than stopping at Myers. I saw several groups with total of more than 150 birds. My thought was the that the north end was getting frozen, so birds moved to south end of the lake. It would take them an hour plus if they flew 30 to 40 miles an hour. So the grebes probably can also do this. Yesterday afternoon I was home for an errand and I too heard a Bluebird singing in the yard from top of a Norway maple! Today at the bus stop near East Hill Plaza, I heard robin's chuck chucking, but could not see any robins and then I realized a pair of starlings were engaged in romantic moments and one of the starling was making that sound. That was very cool! A WESTERN GREBE was visible far to the northwest from Stewart Park until at least 10:30am. I wasn't sure if I could see a light loral spot. The flank seemed more uniformly gray than I recall from my previous closer sighting from the southwest corner of the lake, and the only whitish part may have been associated with the bird's leg. The black hind-neck stripe was plenty wide (like Gary's photo). The bill was long and dull yellowish. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe - Cayuga Co.
About 2:40pm I got a call from Jerry Lazarczyk saying he and Doug Beattie had briefly seen a Western Grebe at 2pm near the red lighthouse close to a Horned Grebe, but they were giving up on refinding it. I did it get a chance to look thoroughly because I was working, but a brief limited scan from the taxi a half hour later did not show me any grebes. I think it's inconclusive whether there are 3 and our southern bird was playing its usual hide and seek or whether it flew north and joined another bird for a total of 2. --Dave Nutter Ithaca, NY On Feb 8, 2012, at 4:03 PM, Matthew Medler matthewmed...@yahoo.com wrote: Can anybody go to Stewart Park right now to see if there might be three Western Grebes on the lake at the moment? [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe - No (Hog Hole) Sunday PM
For what it's worth, Bernie Carr and I spent several hours at the south end of Cayuga Lake on Sunday afternoon and could not find the Western Grebe. We looked from what we took to be Hog Hole and could see two Red-throated Loons close together, and a Common Loon several hundred yards away. The RT Loons were distant and we looked at them carefully but still thought they were both Red-throated Loons. Over at East Shore Park we could see the same two birds and thought they were both RT Loons from that position, plus a total of three Common Loons. We didn't go up Rte 89 and were out of time and did not go north of East Shore Park. We also dipped on the White-winged Crossbills at Summerhill, finding only Pine Siskins plus a single Goldfinch at the Hovel Chalet. So had to go to get my better tripod, which was in the lab. Then as I came down from the campus, I had to make split second decision as to go to Hogs Hole or go to the White Lighthouse Jetty. Decided to do a mile trek to the lighthouse. I scanned the previously noted location twice and did not see the grebe. So I scanned rest of the lake. Then on third scan, I managed to watch it, as it was just ducking into the water. So it was there at least. A little later came up next a pair of displaying Goldeneyes. This time it did not dive back immediately. Actually, remained on the surface and waved his leg in the air as if to let me know it was there! Then it preened, dove, preened again and dove. Then sat on the water and lazily watched around, especially three of its neighbors were displaying Goldeneyes, putting there head back and probably saying something. After watching the grebe and other waterfowls for half an hour plus, I headed back. I had almost reached my car and then suddenly I felt I need to find car keys. I had this nagging doubt that I had left it on the jetty. So stopped at one of the picnic tables and searched my numerous pockets on numerous jackets I was wearing and my backpack, but did not find it. So headed back to the lighthouse and the place I had stopped was behind the lighthouse, so I could not see if the keys were there or not until I reached the end. After reaching the I did not find the keys. Then I once more was looking for them in my pockets, first pocket I felt, there it was! Probably it was hidden between the gloves when I first checked. But as I had come back, I thought I will scan the lake for the grebe again. This time I did not find it nor I found any other ducks it was hanging with. Maybe some of the local residents had disturbed them. I scanned the lake, but seemed not anywhere in view. Probably it is hanging around somewhere at the middle of lake. But anyway I had pay to the grebe debt in 4 miles! It was good to practise with load, hopefully an exercise for my upcoming Himalyan trek! [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe, Shrike, White-winged TV
Some incidental birding today produced some excellent birds. At 12:30, in between errands, I decided to to a quick check from the first pullout on Rt. 89 (#829) above Hogs Hole. I could see only 4 birds in the SW sector of the lake -- 3 LESSER SCAUP and a WESTERN GREBE. The grebe was fairly close and gave excellent scope views in the emerging sunlight, and some fair digiscoping chances. A little later, I drove behind the Ithaca airport hoping for a shrike, and found crisp adult NORTHERN SHRIKE on Neimi Rd -- just at the west edge of the ponds. Two TURKEY VULTURES flew over, one of them the striking partially white-winged individual that has been around this winter -- actually the first time I've seen it. [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe still there
The WESTERN GREBE is being very accommodating near the southwest corner of the lake. I was looking from along Taughannock Boulevard, but I think it would have been almost equivalent viewing from Hogs Hole or the white lighthouse (and it would have been fantastic looks from the red lighthouse!) As it was, the bird was close enough for very good looks through a scope, unsatisfying looks in binoculars, and mediocre (but better than earlier in the week) photos. It was spending some time with a group of scaup as well as diving and wandering around a bit, but generally due north from Hogs Hole. A male RUDDY DUCK was also swimming nearby, and I saw a male LONG-TAILED DUCK fly north up the lake. This morning Tim and Brad also had two distant WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS from East Shore looking towards the yacht club. Last night I stopped by Stewart Park to look for gulls. I succeeded in finding two 1st-cycle ICELAND GULLS and what I took to be a 2nd-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, perhaps the same as the 3rd-cycle others have reported? The overall look was of a 1st-cycle Lesser, with some pattern on the back and a mostly dark bill. However, the back was quite dark (darker than any Herring) with some yellow on the bill. I would like to see this bird again in better light. Finally, yesterday morning I spent a little time at Summerhill, where I had 33+ WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Salt Road just south of Hoag, and a few more (or some of the same) crossbills and about 40 PINE SISKINS at the swamp on Hoag. I noticed a couple things; it doesn't associate with the Red-necked Grebes at all. Once when crossing paths with another Grebe it dove and swam underneath to avoid a close encounter. Many times it looked like it had something trailing behind like a tail extension, but was only dragging a leg. I've seen other birds stretch their legs, but this guy seemed to do in constantly mostly the right leg. Sometimes he would windmill his leg around the side of his body. I don't think anything was wrong, maybe it just felt good. [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe Tuesday 3/16/10
I missed the Western Grebe late yesterday afternoon and then read the post from Jerry Lazarczyk this morning and decided to try again on the eastern access to Chimney Bluffs. It was a much better day to try as there was less wind and therefore less wave action and there was better light today. We arrived at 11:00 am and found Curt Fox searching. Bob found the Grebe in just minutes. It was out to the west or left from the parking area. Too far away for a photo for us. Then it swam in closer. Then Jean Skelly arrived and got a look through Bob's scope before it disappeared behind the cliffs. Curt climbed the walk to the top of the bluffs and saw it from there. It might have been possible to see it from the beach also but we didn't try that as I had to get back to work. [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at Chimney Bluffs State Park, Lake Ontario
Hi All, I just received a message from Chris Wiley to say that he and some other Ithaca birders are currently (10:30 am, 14 March 2010) watching a WESTERN GREBE at Chimney Bluffs State Park, located on Lake Ontario in Wayne County. The bird is just off-shore from the parking lot area. There are also about 30 Red-necked Grebes present, but the Western Grebe is apparently staying to itself. This bird appears to have swum under the radar for the past few days. It was reported to eBird on 11 March 2010, and because of its rarity in the state, triggered a report on the eBird Notable Birds Google Gadget (http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/Google_Gadget.html) for New York. However, I have not seen any mention of it on any local listserves. Good luck if you go! [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe, Eurasian Wigeon, Sandhill Crane, Ross's Geese etc
With our group suffering various cases of hydrophobia, sleeping-in, and hangovers, Tim Lenz and I were the only ones willing and able for a day of birding. And what a wonderful day it ended up being! The rain mostly kept away, the skies were full of geese and swans, flooded fields everywhere were teaming with ducks, blackbird and grackle song filled the air, and there were good numbers of raptors attracted to all the commotion. We started off by heading up to Chimney Bluffs State Park (Lake Ontario) to look for the reported Western Grebe. The windy conditions meant that it wasn't easy scanning the choppy water, but there were plenty of birds present to keep things interesting. Large numbers of LONG-TAILED DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYE and RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and around 30 RED-NECKED GREBES made for entertaining searching. After about 40min, we located the WESTERN GREBE swimming just offshore from the parking lot. The distance and wind precluded fantastic photos, though some grainy, out-of-focus ones were taken. Sodus Bay had 20+ MUTE SWAN, 5 TRUMPETER SWANS, and about 30 HOODED MERGANSERS. We stopped along Road 414 back down to Clyde where the first thousands of SNOW GEESE and hundreds of TUNDRA SWANS of the day were flying over. We managed to pick out one ROSS'S GOOSE from the crowd, as well as a very pale-backed CACKLING GOOSE in a field with some Canadas. Down in Montezuma, VanDyne Spoor Rd contained enormous quantities of NORTHERN PINTAIL, one SANDHILL CRANE, one NORTHERN SHRIKE, one very brown juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON (tantalizingly gyr falon-esque), at least six NORTHERN HARRIERS (many of which persistently mobbed the aforementioned falcon), and a couple of pale ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Quite the show! The mucklands lacked the enormous goose-flocks seen there during the past week, but still harbored a couple of thousand snow geese. In the pool on the eastern end of the mucklands (visible from the potato building), were good numbers of wigeon and other dabblers, including our first drake EURASIAN WIGEON of the day. Also here, was a second PEREGRINE FALCON (an adult), which posed on a sign 10 feet from the car for a photo. The main pool at Montezuma had over a thousand CANVASBACK (with a smattering of other Aethya mixed in), hundreds of TUNDRA SWANS, hundreds of RING-NECKED DUCK, and 30 NORTHERN SHOVELLERS. There continue to be huge rafts of Aethya ducks off Cayuga State Park at the northern end of the lake, although they were well offshore. These consisted of a fairly even mixture of REDHEAD, SCAUP, RING- NECKED DUCK, CANVASBACK and AMERICAN WIGEON, with a drake EURASIAN WIGEON mixed in. Here, we also saw another ROSS'S GOOSE flying overhead with the streams of Snow Geese. We finished off the day with a single COMMON LOON off Sheldrake Point. I'm sure I'm forgetting many other things right now - there were birds absolutely everywhere today! I hope others got a chance to get out and see the spectacle.
