Mt. Pleasant Bobolinks, Indigo Buntings - Friday am
Hi all, Carpal-tunnel surgery has banned me from camera, steering wheel, and too much Photoshop for a while, so to keep from losing my mind I am now taking TWO Mt Pleasant walks a day! Fortunately I can type one-handed. Anyway, my morning walk today turned up two delights. A flock of 40 or so Bobolinks swirling very briefly over the switch-grass field north of the road between the observatory and the sheep-farm house. Quickly they disappeared into the long grass and one would then never have known they were there! I've been following the season's progress of two pairs of Indigo Buntings between the farm house and the radio tower road. In recent days the males have been very agitated as a I walked past, chipping loudly and sometimes doing dramatic fluttering flight displays, presumably to distract me away from their nests (although I don't have a clue where the nests are!). This morning a female did the same display, landing on the road with fluttering wings. There must have been an active nest or fledglings in the goldenrod nearby. A very good look at this normally secretive little female. HI all, I was wondering if anyone has noticed where Tree Swallows are roosting at Montezuma this fall? [cayugabirds-l] Just OOB Yellow Rail in Caroline on Saturday[Fwd: Yellow Rail]
Hi all, John Confer, who is no longer a Cayugabirds subscriber, asked me to forward this to the list. John's water spaniel caught a Yellow Rail near his home on Flatiron Road in Caroline on Saturday. Read John's exciting story below: Original Message Subject: Yellow Rail From:con...@ithaca.edu Date:Sun, October 18, 2009 9:31 am To: m...@cornell.edu Cc: con...@ithaca.edu -- 17 October, 2009 From: John L. Confer Biology Department Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY 14850 To: NYSARC Yellow Rail (Coturnicops noveboracensis) report. On the afternoon of 17 Oct, 2009 I was walking through a ~60 acre hay field that was mowed this past July. This site is adjacent to the Goetchius Preserve, owned by the Finger Lakes Land Trust, about one mile west of the eastern edge of Tompkins County, NY and bordered to the east by Flatiron Rd, in the Town of Caroline. The coordinates are N42o, 25â30â, W76o 17â42â. The mixed vegetation averaged about a foot high with patches of taller goldenrod and some areas with shorter vegetation. My dog, Belle Flower, began pouncing in the grass with stiff front legs and then grabbed something in her mouth. I fully expected the creature to be a dead vole, as has happened in the past. I pried her mouth open and was shocked to find it was a bird. I opened my hand and rolled the bird over for a better look. I was actually flabbergasted when it started to move. Iâve banded thousands of birds, but having just gotten it from Bellâs mouth, I was certain this one was dead and left my hand open. In a few seconds, this creature, which I had thought was certainly dead, flew out of my hand. Frankly, I could have gotten a much more detailed view of this hand-held bird if I had anticipated it was well enough to get up and fly a few seconds after I removed it from the jaws of death. In fact this observation might be the shortest view of a potential NYSAR bird on record. Nonetheless, some of the features were seen in hand with complete certainty, enough so that I offer this report. I am quite certain of the features I saw, which I think are sufficient to definitively identify the bird. However, I know that there are features that you might well expect, which I did not have the time to observe. Please donât pillage me too harshly for not noting several other features. DESCRIPTION SIZE. I held the bird in my hand and its head and neck stretched just beyond my thumb and fore-finger . With its body extended diagonally across my palm, the tail reached just beyond the palm of my hand slightly past the little finger. This distance was later measured as 6-7 inches, which is about the length of the bird. LEGS. As I first held the bird in my hand, the very first thing I noted, which made me aware it was not a mammal, was its legs that extended beyond my cupped hand. The bird had notably long legs, about 2 inches. The legs were bluish-gray or slate-gray or gray with a slight hint of metallic blue, a little darker than the leg color of Tufted Titmouse. BEAK. The beak was straight and about ½ inch long. It definitely was shorter and not curved as with a Virginia Rail and it definitely was not the thickness, top to bottom, of a Sora Rail beak. The ratio of the thickness at the base to the length was similar to a Red-winged Blackbird, although the culmen was not curved and the total size of the beak (as well as the bird itself) was smaller. BODY COLOR. The coloration on the back was streaked consisting of broad streaks of medium dark brown alternating with lighter brown. The breast and side of the bird was distinctly lighter brown than the back, more of a straw brown color. I wouldnât say it actually looked yellow, but it was a very light brown color. The head coloration was similar to the body, although, frankly, I didnât take/have as much time to note head details as desirable. TAIL. The tail was short and the underside was a dark color. FLIGHT. When the bird flew out of my hand, it flew about 10 m before it landed back down in the hay field. The flight was sustained by rapid, shallow wing beats, which created the impression of a poor flier. FLIGHT PATTERN. As it flew, a white edge on the secondaries was very clear. The white extend up the secondaries for about ¼ of the feather length. The white edge was clearly not a thin line (not like the thin line of a Wood Duck for contrast). There was no white in the tail, which I could not have missed in viewing this bird from behind and while looking down on it. I looked at Petersonâs fourth edition and noted several discrepancies between my observations/report and his depiction. First, this edition depicts the legs as being yellow. I recall being quite impressed by the length and bluish-grey color of the legs, the very first thing that made me aware it was a bird and not a vole, as I
[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant American Pipit
HI all, On my afternoon walk today on somewhat breezy Mount Pleasant, I heard an American Pipit in flight. [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Cornell Arboretum
Sorry for the late post, but Mt Pleasant yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon hosted several Horned Larks as well as a largish flock of American Pipits (great views of them foraging on the ground in the field opposite the observatory). Also a Common Raven was heard calling. And this morning I was in the Cornell Arboretum photographing fall color when I noticed that many Blue Jays were doing their acorn caching thing! I watched them flying to and fro from the several very large oak trees by the pond, carrying acorns in their bills. On the ground, they would push the acorn into soil or into the grass, then pick up a leaf (sometimes more than one) and cover the hidden acorn with it. I also watched Blue Jays doing this with sunflower seeds from a friend's feeder over the weekend. A veritable frenzy of food storage activity, and very entertaining to watch! Re: [cayugabirds-l] gettin' frisky?
These remind me too that when I was downtown yesterday I heard my first cardinal of the year singing (albeit a rather understated song and for just a few seconds). And yet, when I was in CT for Christmas (a bit farther south, it's true) the titmice, chickadees, cardinals, WB Nuthatches and Carolina Wrens were singing up a storm). Marie It's time. I heard a Tufted Titmouse singing this morning. I'm always amazed at how little change in day length it takes to get their hormones flowing. [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Snow Buntings
For the past few days I have been seeing two different flocks of Snow Buntings on Mt Pleasant: one flock of 8 or 9 birds is usually at the edge of the road where there is exposed vegetation in which they forage, the other flock of more like 20-25 birds is usually in flight over the fields. [cayugabirds-l] Common Raven gets the Manager's Special
(Meant to post this yesterday but life got in the way). A large black bird laboring under the weight of something pale that it was carrying in its bill caught my eye as I headed home from my Mt Pleasant walk Friday afternoon. As I continued up the hill, a second one took off from the road—they were Common Ravens airlifting chicken quarters (I think) from a package of meat that had been dumped on the road. (I say I think, because the meat was so gross at that point that I didn't want to examine the package too closely!). I wonder if the ravens also carried off the old sofa that was dumped near the same spot last week, and subsequently disappeared? ;-))) Marie -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

But on the way home, I saw an actual male kestrel take flight, carrying some prey, and wing its way over the fields toward the ex-sheep-barn, at which point it began calling. RE: [cayugabirds-l] orioles
Re. birds eating petals, I have seen Northern Cardinals and House Finches do this too. Red-winged Blackbirds have been feeding in my apple tree in addition to the Baltimore Orioles. Having watched this behavior in orioles a lot, I'm convinced that the orioles are probing for insects as much as they are going for nectar. I have photos of them capturing small larvae and also using their bills in a starling-like manner (they push bill in closed, then open it, like starlings do when they probe into the grass) to reach into the blossom. I think the redwings are doing the same. About the other species? I don't know. Maybe eating the petals is merely a by product of nabbing some little insect or other? FW: [cayugabirds-l] Nighthawks - extremely OOB
The posting from Steve Fast reminded me that I had wanted to express my joy to Cayugabirders a few weeks ago while I was in Lawton, Oklahoma (my pied-a-terre for Wichita Mtns NWR). Finally. a place where Common Nighthawks are thriving. And where could this place be? The parking lot of the local, and vast, Walmart!! There at dusk, dozens of nighthawks flew around making their nasal calls and snapping up the numerous insects attracted to the bright parking lot lights, which stay on all night and which in another frame of mind I would quite loathe! As an aside, in the daytime, the fences around Walmart and the big piece of open ground adjacent to it made great foraging perches for Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. INteresting to see them dodge the traffic. Now I'm in the Mono Lake Basin, CA, on a photo trip until early July! [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Red-tailed Hawk, Merlin - photos
Hi Cayugabirders, I spent time in Stewart Park both Saturday and Sunday mornings, primarily to take scenic photos for the soon-to-be-updated Basin Birding Site Guide. The biggest excitement though was several raptor experiences that easily distracted me from the waterfowl flocks. Yesterday morning (Saturday), a Red-tailed Hawk flew down to land on a large log just offshore. When I approached it I found it was feeding on an American Coot (whether or not it actually caught the coot, I don't know but I think not as I did not notice a scuffle as I was approaching the bird). It was cool to see the hawk plucking feathers from the coot, and watching the feathers float away. After about 40 minutes feeding, the hawk, presumably sated, let the coot slide into the water, looked at it with a slightly bemused expression for a couple of minutes (sorry for the anthropomorphism), then flew away. A couple of Red-tailed images are here: http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=58pos=1 http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=58pos=2 Today (Sunday), Gary K. pointed out a/the adult Bald Eagle perched on a snag. Later while I was photographing waterfowl, a Merlin flew up into a tree nearby where it duly posed for many images, at one point preening and spreading its tail elegantly. It was still there when I left around 11:20 am. Here's a photo of the Merlin: http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=474pos=0 A very raptor-y weekend at I always think of as a very waterfowl-y birding spot! RE: [cayugabirds-l] Rafferty Rd - Snow Bunting roosts
Here's what Birds of North America Online says for roosting behavior in Snow Bunting: *** Sleeping, Roosting, Sunbathing In winter, roosts in slight scrapes in snow in open areas; average distance between roosting birds 2.5 m, rarely 30 cm (Vincent and Bédard 1976). Only roosts behind snowdrifts in lee of wind when temperatures below -7°C; huddling together not observed, even under extreme conditions (Vincent and Bédard 1976). During storms, passively covered with snow; during extreme conditions (-35°C), burrows into snow (Bagg 1943). Rarely observed roosting in trees (Parmelee 1968). In early spring on breeding grounds, roosts in loose aggregations in cracks and holes on cliffs (Parmelee 1968); 50–80 birds roosted in narrow cracks of southwest-facing, exposed cliffs at 2 Greenland roosts in early spring (Meltofte 1983); after territories established, male roosts alone in crack or hole on own territory . BNA has nothing specific about winter Horned Lark roosts, but I would presume they are also on the ground. Re. Lapland Longspur winter roosting: Sleeping, Roosting, Sunbathing Even during continuous daylight during breeding season, males roost singly on song perch rocks for 3–5 h in the middle of the “night” (20:30–01:30 MST at Sarcpa Lake; RM); females roost at nest (Hussell 1972); during cold weather, several pairs roosted communally in grass tussocks (Watson 1957). Roosting sites during migration and winter unknown. ** Marie Marie Read Wildlife Photography 452 Ringwood Road Freeville NY 13068 USA Phone 607-539-6608 e-mail m...@cornell.edu http://www.marieread.com http://www.agpix.com/mari From: bounce-7607236-5851...@list.cornell.edu [bounce-7607236-5851...@list.cornell.edu] On Behalf Of John Greenly [j...@cornell.edu] Sent: Saturday, December 25, 2010 5:10 PM To: cayugabirds Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Rafferty Rd Stopped by Rafferty Rd late this afternoon. 2 N HARRIERS active, didn't find any owls. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Bunting flock - size estimate
Hi all, I spent over three hours this morning photographing the large Snow Bunting flock on Mt Pleasant. I took more than 1000 images so it will take me a while to get any of them online, but I did use one of my photos to count the birds and estimate the size of the flock. The number of individuals was much higher than that I had expected - in one image I counted 810 individuals, and I estimated that image to have represented 85-90% of the flock. That means the total number is likely to be over 1000 birds! Wow! It was wonderful to be in the midst of these fascinating little birds as the flock swirled around feeding on the weed seeds in the field (west of the observatory). Several times they all flew up and landed at the tops of some of the gorgeously ice-kissed trees around the field, other times they landed on the ground in a potato field and rested there blending in very well with the potatoes lying on the ground. But mostly the flock was on the wing, moving along with a wave-like motion through the weeds. Experiences like this go a long way toward making winter liveable for me! I found the redpolls this afternoon (Wednesday) around 4:15. There are a number of birches in this area, but the redpolls are focussing their attention on the few that have catkins remaining. The large Snow Bunting flock on Mt Pleasant is mostly staying way in the back of the fields and has been much harder to locate in the past couple of days. [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca CBC Snow Bunting report for January 1st!
We're saved! I just heard from my neighbor's friend, Mary beth Norton, that she saw a flock of 20 - 30 Snow Buntings flying on Mt Pleasant on January 1st 2011, so we can include that record in our Christmas Bird Count. She and I have been talking about the buntings ever since they've been up there this season, and she's seen my photos, so I feel absolutely confident that she knows what she saw. She was driving up there and saw the flock near the road to the radio tower at around 12:40 pm (I had already returned home after my morning route at that point). Great news. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings
A brief glimpse of a flock of about 200 Snow Buntings this morning around 11:15. First time I'd seen them since Dec 31. They were initially flying around in the field opposite the observation tower, but soon after I noticed them they flew up high and off to the north. (Are they trying to tell me something? [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls
A large flock (I'd say 100+) Common Redpolls is now consorting with the even larger flock of Snow Buntings on Mt Pleasant. As of this morning they were foraging on the north side of Mt Pleasant Rd, from 8:30 until around 10:30 am they were in the field just east of the radio tower, but now have moved into the adjacent field toward the sheep farm in the valley west of the radio tower. The redpolls are feeding on the same vegetation as the buntings (I think it is some alfalfa mixed in with grasses). I spent several hours there this morning shooting video footage of the flocks (...and am now looking for a business partner who simply loves editing video!!! I shot 8 GB of footage just now...somewhat overwhelming to think of editing all that) Marie Marie Read Wildlife Photography 452 Ringwood Road Freeville NY 13068 USA Phone 607-539-6608 e-mail m...@cornell.edu http://www.marieread.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Aurora Bay Aythya raft
Aurora Bay hosted an enormous raft (actually several) of mostly Redheads with some Ring-necked Ducks mixed in this morning. The flock was almost directly below the Lake Road bluffs when I arrived around 9:15 am and had slowly moved southward farther along the lake when I returned around 10:45 am. I had a lot of fun shooting still and video, especially the latter, watching as the raft slowly changed shape as the mass of birds moved around. One still photo, showing just part of the raft, is here: http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=42pos=10 Anybody want to count 'em??? Otherwise, Center Road had just a single Horned Lark, but a newly manured field just south of the Triangle Diner (on Lake Ridge Road - correct name??) had a large flock of possible 200 Horned Larks. There were scatted Tundra Swans along the lake, but the closest swans that got me all excited along Lake Road turned out to be Mutes! A pretty winter day. [cayugabirds-l] Aurora Bay / Union Springs and waterfowl count question
At Aurora Bay this morning, unfortunately the Redhead raft was NOT present, nor could I see any sign of it from Long Pt State Park looking south and across the lake. At Union Springs, the Factory Street pond hosted several Redhead and Gadwall pairs, as well as Mallards. The famous Screechie was soaking up the sun in the entrance of his box. For you lake-ice-watchers, the ice has retreated to just south of Union Springs (several miles north of its level last Monday). From Union Springs I could see hundreds of Tundra Swans roosting on the southernmost ice, way out in the middle of the lake, possibly closer to the west shore. There were also scattered Tundra Swans along the east shore of the lake, notably visible from Lake Road. I have a question for the those who took part in the recent waterfowl count: has anyone estimated the size of the Aythya raft? Or was that not in the count area at the time? The latest number I see is from the Christmas Bird Count at 940 birds, but that was a while ago and there are more birds now. I am being asked on Facebook how many that raft contains. (If all else fails I guess I will have to count them in my photo!) Feel free to forward this to the list if you'd like. I was birding at Myers Point at 4 PM this afternoon and had a large raft of redheads along the eastern lakeshore south of the point. I don't know if it was the raft you've been seeing, but it was certainly larger than any number of redheads I've ever seen. It certainly was a few thousand. Also there were quite a few ring-necks, mallards, and coots, 20-30 tundra swans, a few scaup (at least one of which I could ID as a greater) and common mergs, along with a lone female shoveler and a distant common loon. And of course Canada geese. The north side of the point had all the gulls and common goldeneye. On Sunday afternoon, around 3:30, there was a flock of 12 Horned Larks with about half as many Snow Buntings flying in the fields at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd. Whether they were there during Saturday's blizzard conditions, I don't know, but I WASN't!! Earlier today, a Common Raven flew over the yard calling. [cayugabirds-l] Random bird observations - Wednesday March 30
Hi all, Stewart Park this morning: the Common Mergansers are performing their courtship flights/chases and pairs are looking at nest sites. Mt Pleasant this afternoon (1:30 to 2:30) has its first Killdeer of the season, and while I was watching that, a magnificent male Northern Harrier flew up and began circling higher and higher before heading off. Several Horned Larks in the fields. An addition to the welcome spring sounds: a Brown Creepers singing from the wood along Mt Pleasant Rd. An Eastern Bluebird was checking out a nest box on a utility pole opposite the observatory. My yard just now: A Chipping Sparrow has joined the few Common Redpolls on the nyjer seed feeder. The redpolls suddenly froze as a Sharp-shinned Hawk just strafed the feeders before flying off. RE:[cayugabirds-l] Spotted Sandpiper @ Stewart Park; + ~25 Bonaparte's Gulls.
Folks who're seeing the Bonaparte's Gulls: are they in breeding plumage? still changing? I'm the photo editor for the bird club's upcoming book about birding sites in the basin, in which we include small photos of some typical birds for each site. I have the option of choosing a Boney in breeding or non-breeding plumage, so I wanted some input. Scoping from East Shore Park around 7 AM I saw a flock of about 20 Bonarparte's Gulls staged in a line off the west shore north of the lighthouse. I saw a few more stragglers. None of them lingered long in the water, soon taking off to the north. There were Scaup, Bufflehead, and Common Mergansers scattered about as well. I hurried over to Stewart Park to try to get a better look at the gulls. I parked in front of the tennis courts and immediately got distracted by what looked like a Spotted Sandpiper flying along the shore. I verified this id when I saw it again spotted and bobbing while working its way east on the thick carpet of wrack. Also heard a fish crow before I left. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake, Saturday pm
Cayugabirders Well, I simply couldn't being myself to join the bird club's Dryden Lake trip in this morning's horrendous weather, and I do hope that the intrepid souls that did were amply rewarded. But I did go there at 4:00 this afternoon with the sun finally shining. I walked the length of the trail along west side of the lake Highlights on the lake: Common Loon (nonbreeding plumage) Raft of 45 or so Common Mergansers Red-breasted Merganser 1 male and 4 females at north end of lake Horned Grebes - a pair in gorgeous breeding plumage at the south end of the lake, 1 not-so-handsome one at the north end Canada Geese Landbirds were few and far between, but there was a dyad of Northern Flickers in the dead trees on the west of the trail. To end my walk in good style, a Belted Kingfisher flew over just as I reached my car! And on Mt Pleasant Rd earlier that afternoon, a Brown Thrasher caught my attention in the woods opposite the farm house in the dip, first giving a rather creaky, hesitant song then bursting into full song for a while. This is the first thrasher I have noted up there in many years. Stunned by the appearance of a strange, bright object in the sky, I headed to Newman Arboretum for some photography. While video-ing Red-winged Blackbirds displaying, females calling, American Robins singing, and Northern Flicker foraging on the ground, I twice heard a bright song that could only have been a Baltimore Oriole. But in neither case could I confirm it visually. Given that Tom Hoebbel (I think) posted one this morning, and the arrival of so many migrants since last night, it would not be surprising. Also there, Brown Thrasher singing, several Yellow Warblers, flyover Fish Crow, and many of the usual suspects. [cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbird: an interesting article and a photo
Here's an interesting article about the Rusty Blackbird that appears in Northern Woodlands magazine (a very nice publication with all kinds of natural history tidbits, although with a definite focus on forestry, for those who aren't familiar with it) http://northernwoodlands.org/outside_story/article/an-unnoticed-little-known-and-disappearing-songbird/ It made me realize how lucky we in the Cayuga Lake Basin are to have several spots, most notably Sapsucker Woods with its wet, swampy pools, where we can consistently see these cool northern birds as they pass through in spring. A couple of weeks ago I was able to photograph one there, thanks to Mark Chao who was essential in getting me onto this bird: http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=483pos=0 (Taken using a 500mm lens + 1.4X, and a flash with a Better Beamer flash extender. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Why cowbirds foster their eggs to other birds
Hi Marilyn, Well, I don't see anything in this article that suggests any reason that cowbirds STARTED laying their eggs in other birds nests. We are talking about something that happened way back during the cowbird's evolutionary history here, tens or hundreds of thousands of years ago. So in fact we will never know exactly why the first cowbird female started the trend to parasitism. What your expert put forward was a theory of why the behavior might have been adaptive for the cowbird population, ie what advantages did the behavior offer the population. It certainly is a plausible explanation, in my opinion. Who was the biologist in the radio piece by the way? Interesting topic Marie (currently in June Lake, California hence my recent absence from Cayugabirds-L...but...I'll be back!!!) RE:[cayugabirds-l] Cardinal Singing non stop for three hours
A male cardinal was just singing up a storm in my yard too, making washing the dinner dishes a lot more pleasurable! Bet he and his mate are nesting again too, but I wonder at what stage they are to stimulate this resurgence of song - just starting a new clutch? Or are there recent fledglings that he's singing for? ie. is the singing because they're at the beginning or the end of the nesting cycle? Maybe both, I suppose. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Bobolink flocks
The highlight of my walk earlier this morning on Mt Pleasant Rd were the numerous Bobolinks perched and flying around in several loose flocks. They were mostly near/in the unharvested grain field (wheat?), and once many were perched on the edge of the road. I counted 63 at one point but there were many more hidden that I couldn't see until they flew and then I lost count! I saw no breeding plumaged or molting males. While they were on the road it was very obvious that many of them had extremely yellow plumage, suggesting they were young of the year. Given that these are not the same birds that attempted nesting in the hayfields up here (and were mowed), I can only breathe a sigh of relief that somewhere in our region there are places where Bobolinks can breed successfully. [cayugabirds-l] An interesting (sound) observation...etc
Hi all, Walking back from the back of my yard just now, I heard a distant Northern Cardinal singing. Wondering where it was, I went a little further and to my surprise the song immediately changed direction. Listening carefully, I realized that it was not distant at all, but was coming from my Blue Spruce tree just about 8 feet above my head! It was a cardinal singing VERY VERY quietly! Presumably it's the young male (dark beak) that comes to the feeder and he is roosting in that tree. Also of interest, a Tufted Titmouse has been singing on and off around the yard for a couple of days. The song sounds a little wobbly...also a young bird? And finally, at noon there was a bemused looking Ruffed Grouse standing at the very edge of the woods on Baker Hill Rd at Mt Pleasant Rd. Seemed to be soaking up the sun, and apparently not perturbed when I backed up to watch it for a while. Birds never cease to delight me! [cayugabirds-l] Photo request for Basin Birding Site Guide - RNGrebe
Hi all, As some of you know, I'm acting as photo editor for the upcoming Cayuga Basin Birding Site Guide soon to be published by the Cayuga Bird Club, and I am hoping one of you photographers or digiscopers out there can help me. I need a good quality image of a Red-necked Grebe in winter (nonbreeding) plumage. Since this is a pretty drab bird, I'm looking for something with anything but grey water surroundings. It also needs to be clear, well-lit and sharply focused (please!). And not too small in the frame since I will be cropping in close to the bird itself. If anyone can help out, I'd most appreciate it, with the warning that I'm requesting a donation here. That's a lot to ask, but the image will be reproduced at only 1 square as part of a banner of small images across each page. The club is not producing this book for profit. If you're interested, please send me a small jpeg image or direct me to a link on your website. Thanks very much! [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings
A large flock (I estimated 100+) of Snow Buntings was flying over the field across Mt Pleasant Rd opposite the radio tower road. They're baaack! Suddenly winter is looking up. Gentlemen (and ladies)...start your motordrives! [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings
Around 3pm today, a flock of 60+ Snow Buntings was on Mt Pleasant Rd at the junction with the radio tower road, seen on the road surface at first then foraging in the field east of the radio tower road where the wind has exposed a wide swath of soil and low plants. [cayugabirds-l] RFI: Pileated woodpecker
Naomi's posting reminded me to put out this request for information. I'm looking to photograph and video Pileated Woodpecker for an upcoming multi-media project. If anyone knows of/finds a regularly-used Pileated feeding channel in a treetrunk, or better yet a nest later in the spring, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. As always, I offer a nice print as a reward should the photography prove successful. Thanks very much! He was tearing apart a pile of rotted logs that have been there for years. He worked his way along the side and nearly under when a gray squirrel came sauntering along down the side hill and too close to Mr. Woodpecker. There was quite a flurry as the woodpecker tilted back, wings outspread and with his feet let Mr. squirrel have it ! The squirrel left the area fast and the woodpecker continued his search for a good meal. I often see the Pileated, sometimes 2 or 3 as there is a woods back of my house and old trees in front along the lakeshore. Cardinals and Carolina wrens are singing loud and clear now. The Robins that have stayed here this “winter” will be heading back to Newfoundland to nest and the ones that went further south will be coming back to us soon. It has been a joy to have them around whichever way they are going.
