Did I screw up my CF Multiserver install?

2009-03-18 Thread Phill B

A while back I set up a server running CF 8 Ent. Everything is working
fine and I have two instances of CF running. Problem is that I cant
find the Enterprise Manager in the CF Administrator. Did I some how
manage to install CF multiple times with out using the Multiserver
install?

Yes, it is says Server: cfusion but it doesn't have the Enterprise

HTML to PDF help needed ActivePDF just died on me

2009-01-14 Thread Phill B
ActivePDF just started flaking out on me. Some times it will work and
other times it wont. I tried cfdocument but that thing sucks when
using it with a page built mostly with CSS. Are there any other
solutions out there? Suggestions? Words of comfort?

BTW: I cant afford $269 for a support call let alone $1,590.00 for the
activePDF upgrade.

Anyone know anything about the Canvas Wiki?

2008-11-13 Thread Phill B
It looks like the only CF based wiki to speak of is Canvas. I'm sure
its great but I cant find any documentation or support of value.

So this is what I'm trying to find out.

The install docs say CanvasWiki was built using the 1.0 release of
Model-Glue, so you must install the Model-Glue framework. Good to
know but Model-Glue is currently 2.0.304. So does anyone know if
Canvas is going to work with Model-Glue 2.0.304? I don't have the time
to test it out on my own only to find out it has issues.

Also, I am using a home grown frame work that uses application.cfc. Am
I going to have issues running Canvas and Model-Glue inside the frame
work I have in place? I don't have any experience with MG.

Any advice or help would be appreciated here.

I'm not sure about version issues between MG1 and MG2. I do know that
tuhe app skeleton for current versions of MG includes an Application.cfc
which means if you want to run it within your existing application, you'll
need to merge your own Application.cfc with the MG component. That
 shouldn't be tremendously difficult.

In my case I wanted to set up ua wiki for DataFaucet and the onTap
framework and rather than setting up anything written in CF (or writing
a plugin for the onTap framework), I set them up on wikispaces.com ...
 http://ontap.wikispaces.com and http://datafaucet.wikispaces.com . I'm
pretty happy with Wikispaces. I would certainly like for there to be a
wiki plugin for the onTap framework, but I just couldn't really justify
taking the time to write one just now. I know that in my case I would
get caught up making it feature rich and it would have taken me away
from other things that are higher priority right now. One of the most
significant higher priorities being *having* a working wiki up and
 available for both projects. ;)

They were originally set up to use Canvas on RIAForge.org (speaking of
which, canvas.riaforge.org is where you should get the most up-to-date
info on canvas), but I moved them to wikispaces primarily because Ray
hasn't had time to modify the copy on RIAForge to allow user management
or anonymous edits. Wikispaces gives me the ability to allow anonymous
edits so that people can create new pages for subjects they feel are
inadequately covered, to let me know to write something on them.

Can you guys give me your thoughts on this?

2008-04-07 Thread Phill B
I need some input on this. I need to keep track of changes made to products
in our database. The best thing I have come up with that meets the customers
needs is using CF to track the product using XML. The product will be stored
in the database but all the versions of it would be stored on the server in
XML with the transactions being recorded in it.

Here is how I think it should work but it just doesn't feel right yet.

A new product is created so an XML file is written to the server with the
date and user name attached.

When a potential change is made, the current product will be compared to the
most current XML to see if anything really was changed. If a change is
detected, a new XML file is written to the server with the date and user
name attached to the change.

Does this sound solid enough to use or is there a better way? All input is
appreciated.

It would be great if I could find an easy way to integrate Subversion, CF
and SQL2K for this but that's just crazy talk. :-)

Thanks

be fancy with some javascript to make a list of the fields changed
 when they are changed.

For tracking what was changed, you don't really need the XML, you can
do it with an additional table. You could have a table with something
 like
 changed_ID | changed_table | changed_field | orig_value | new_value.
 A sample record would be
 1234 | 'tbl_product' | 'product_name' | 'my widget' | 'my cool widget'

Re: Can you guys give me your thoughts on this?

2008-04-07 Thread Phill B
Hey Rick

The thought is that we could have an easy to access snap shot of the product
that would include a reference to the last edit.

Here is my idea behind the XML. Lets say I have the following XML (I hope it
comes thru)

product
nameCool Product/name
cost321/cost
/product

If Jerry adds the length to the product, it would be record as follows in a
new XML file.

product
nameCool Product/name
cost321/cost
length transType=Added date=4/5/08 user=Jerry52'/length
/product

With this process I can have links to each of the version of the document.

2008-04-07 Thread Phill B
Very true. The problem I'm having is that I cant figure out how to do this
in a database. I've never worked with a database driven application that
stores revisions that I can dig through the code to see how they do it.
Plus, I couldn't find any good articles or books on this sort of thing.
That's why I'm asking for help. I know there has to be a better way. I just
don't have the experience to pull from to figure out what it is.

Why not store that in the database? That's what databases are for. XML is
better for transport between systems, databases are better for storage.

H. This is what I have. CF 404 file located in c:/web/cfm404/404.cfm and
mapped to all the sites via IIS. It is mapped as /404/404.cfm I have that
set to be the 404 URL in IIS as well.

So maybe this is causing the problem of it running outside of the
applications it is mapped to?

What is the relationship of your missingTemplate handler and the
cfapplication name... OR Application.cfc this.name. In order for a
template to have access to application scope and associated session
scope variables it must belong to that application. To assign a
template to an application scope it must have an cfapplication name=
OR Application.cfc this.name with the same string of the desired template.

I suspect your missingTemplate handler is in a directory that is not
under the Application.cfc OR Application.cfm that defines the
application structure so that ColdFusion has no application to associate
with the template and it flies solo.

I think I found a solution. I will have a 404.cfm file for each site that
will load a cfc that will take care of the missing page. Its not perfect but
at least I will only have to deal with one cfc rather than one for each of
the sites. Thanks for the help Ian!

Yes, I presume your application is not in any of these directories [c:/
OR c:/web OR c:/web/cfm404/]. Applications are defined on file system
directories. Web server virtual mapped directories do not append this.

This is probably not a practical solution, but it should demonstrate the
conecept. Put your 404.cfm inside your application directory, with the
appropriate IIS configuration, underneath the Application.cfc or
Application.cfm file that defines the application name. If you do this,
the template should have access to that applications variables.

Obviously this it not a very global or useful solution, but it is just
 for demonstration purposes.

JNDI server on host 127.0.0.1 at port 2930 has failed (as have all
backup hosts listed, if any) - please verify that the server is
running and the NamingService is available

I have tried the email help that Adobe offers for installations and
that didn't help much. Just got a link to this page but it doesnt tell
me how to fix my problem.

during the start process. Suck. I guess I'll have to use the
application.cfc and make sure its used in all the current and future
apps. suck
Thanks for all the suggestions though.

I've never heard that its not recommended. I have a development server

available to all the ColdFusion apps on the server. I think this is a
great reason for using a server var.

anyone using the DirectoryWatcher eventgateway?

2006-12-26 Thread Phill B
I'm writing an app that watches a directory for new files. When a new
one comes in, it will read it, process it, move it where it belongs,
and finally write to a log file.

The problem I'm having is that it can't handle more than ten or so
files at a time. So, I'm guessing that I'm getting a deadlock on the
files that it is ignoring. Can I prevent this or is it an issue with
the way the directoryWatcher geventgateway works?

2006-12-26 Thread Phill B
Well that helps. I'm using the developer edition and the Processing
Threads form box is greyed out. So I guess I'll have to test on a
remote dev server.

I've made some tweaks to it and it looks to be working better with the
enterprise edition. It looks like it doesn't like it when it has a
files put in the directory when it is trying to process other files.
It will ignore them all together.

On 12/26/06, Michael Dinowitz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My mail machine has it set to 4 threads (1 processor) and a requesttimeout of
300 (set in the application.cfc for the directory watcher template. I know
that I get in a TON of messages into the directory and they all get handled.
I've seen upwards of 30 come in at once when someone has spammed the list
 (all blocked).
I'd do some tests on the template that the directory watcher is calling for
 timeout and execution times.

I was trying to find a way to go back and get the missing files but I
hadn't had much luck. I think I will use your method and see how that
works out for me.

On 12/26/06, Michael Dinowitz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The developer edition is restricted in the amount of threads it'll allow for

Files in the directory when ColdFusion starts will NOT be added to the queue
and have to either be processed by hand or something like that. I have a
setting in my application.cfc onApplicationStart() method that will read all
of the older files in the directory and rename them. This will cause the
onChange() event of the directorywatcher to fire off which I map to the same
 actions as the onAdd() method.

By the power of Greyskull! Are you trying to take over the world with
your 1800 objects? ;-)

We use a lot of object calls thru out our sites. The way we have
managed them is with a masterController. It is mapped to all of the
sites and handles all of the work. Sort of MVC but not really.

We do use a lot of singletons. I guess that is why I'm having a hard
time seeing the benefit of a factory. We can instantiate all the
objects we need when the app gets initialized. The app only gets
reinitialized when it is necessary. So maybe we don't need to worry
about a factory at this point but I still want to learn more about how
they can help. I'm going to do some testing to see if there is any
cost to using one. When I get the results I'll pass them on to the
group.

Re: whats the purpose of an objectFactory?

I do use this technique.
cfif NOT isDefined('application.layout') OR isDefined('url.appInit')

I just didn't want to take the time to write it out though. hahaha
Thanks for posting that though. I think there are a lot of people that
don't know that they need to do these sort of things.

Thanks again Nando.

On 12/12/06, Nando [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
PS ... On the way to the post office to check my mail, i realized i forgot
to say something in my reply. :-)

Your approach of creating all your objects in Application.cfm and placing
them in application scope kind of encapsulates your object creation for now.
But this approach will break down the moment you need an object in a
 different scope, say session scope.

And the way it seems you are doing it is not as efficient as it could be.
I'm looking at your example and assuming it's verbatim:

 cfset application.objectOne = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.navigation')
 cfset application.objectTwo = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.users')
 cfset application.objectThree = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.email')

In this way, you recreate the objects for each request. There's little point
in using application scope in this case.

It would be much more efficient if you created a singleton factory in
application.cfm like so (with a double lock as shown, to make sure you have
only one instance of the Factory in application scope):

 cfif NOT StructKeyExists(application,Factory)
 cflock name=factoryLock Timeout=10 THROWONTIMEOUT=No
 Type=Exclusive
 cfif NOT StructKeyExists(application,Factory)
 cfset application.Factory = CreateObject('component','
 cfc.Factory').init(passInAppSettingsHere)
 /cfif
 /cflock
 /cfif

And then in Factory.init(), you can instantiate any singletons you need into
the variables scope of the factory and they'll persist then effectively in
application scope for the duration of your application.

A singleton, if you don't know the term, is one and only one instance of an
object that persists in application scope in CF. I guess you could also use
the term for a server scoped object.

 --- simple Factory.cfc example ---

 cffunction name=init access=public returntype=Factory output=no
 cfargument name=AppSettings type=any required=Yes/
 cfset variables.AppSettings = arguments.AppSettings /
 cfset variables.Navigation = createNavigation() /
 cfset variables.Navigation.init(variables.AppSettings.getDsn()) /
 cfreturn this /
 /cffunction

 cffunction name=createNavigation access=public returntype=any
 output=no
 cfset var Navigation = createObject('component','cfc.Navigation') /
 cfreturn Navigation /
 /cffunction

 cffunction name=getNavigation access=public returntype=any
 output=no
 cfreturn variables.Navigation /
 /cffunction

 ...

When you need your persisted Navigation object somewhere in your
 application, you can do this:

 application.Factory.getNavigation
 ().getBreadcrumb(uniqueIdentifierForThisPage)

And if you need the navigation for a particular visitor you, could do
 something like this:

 session.navigation = application.Factory.createNavigation()
 ..
 session.navigation.setUserRole(session.User.getRole())
 session.navigation.getUserNav()

The example might be a bit contrived, but i'm only trying to show that with
a factory, you can cache objects in application scope within the factory
itself, which means you only need to deal with double locking in one place
for singletons. Or you can use the same factory to create objects for one
time use or session scoped objects.

Different people will design factories in different ways, and use different
naming conventions for the functions. The more sophisticated your factory,
the more flexible and abstract. You could for instance build a load()
 function something like this:

 cffunction name=load access=public returntype=any output=false
 cfargument name=objectName required=Yes type=string /
 cfargument name=isSingleton default=false type=boolean /

 cfif arguments.isSingleton IS true
 cfif StructKeyExists(variables,arguments.objectName)
 return variables[arguments.objectName]
 cfelse
 create arguments.objectName
 put it in variables scope
 return variables[arguments.objectName]
 /cfif
 cfelse
 create arguments.objectName
 return it
 /cfif
 /cffunction

That's fine, but what if you need to pass in parameters to your init()
function? how would you do that? What if one of your parameters is another
 object?

Now we're getting close to ColdSpring, so we might as well use it. But for
most people starting out with factories, it's probably easier to get a feel
for them using a simple factory you build yourself that has separate
create() or get() functions for each object. Once the usefulness of it
really clicks, then ColdSpring might be the next step.

But i can guarantee to you

whats the purpose of an objectFactory?

2006-12-11 Thread Phill B
I have read a lot about people making their own objectFactory and I
still don't see the need for one. Can some one please give me a reason
why I would need to use one? So far I have yet to find a reason not to
call to the objects directly when I need them. My lack of
understanding makes me think it is just adding more code than is
required.

I do all my work in application.cfm file as well. I load the 7 or 8
objects I need and I'm done with it. I just don't see how there code
be a speed benefit.

Why would I want to load an object into the application scope just to
load more objects? This is one more piece of code that has to be ran,
maintained, suck up processes, suck up memory, to explain Wouldn't
it be best to just keep it simple and call right to the CFC?

I don't know what is right or wrong when it comes to objectFactories.
That is why I am asking the question.

On 12/11/06, Aaron Roberson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I am not one to give guidance since I am new to all this myself,

benefits Adrian mentioned for using object factories (there are
probably other benefits to using object factories that my approach
 does not benefit from).

I have also chosen to place Application.cfm files in each directory.
That way I am only initting objects that will be used in that
directories files. If all of my objects for the entire application
were initted in one Application.cfm there would a rather long delay
when someone first visits the site.

On the other hand, Phill Nacelli has created an object factory that
looks pretty good. I was going to use it but he took a while to post

my application so... maybe next time. He has since blogged about it

Re: whats the purpose of an objectFactory?

If your RAM is an issue, it's probably fine to call right to the CFC.

Also Adrian gave a few good reasons to take the objectFactory approach: the
main one being you are re-using code rather than duplicating code in
 different places.

 -- Josh

But there is less code being used with out the objectFactory.

I could have this in my application.cfm
cfset application.objectOne = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.navigation')
cfset application.objectTwo = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.users')
cfset application.objectThree = CreateObject('component', 'cfc.email')

Three lines to load instantiate an object.

Or you could have this in the application.cfm
cfset application.objectFactory= CreateObject('component',
'cfc.objectFactory')
cfset application.objectFactory.register('objectOne')
cfset application.objectFactory.register('objectTwo')
cfset application.objectFactory.register('objectThree')

This takes one more line of code in the application.cfm file plus what
ever you have written into your objectFactory.

Now I have the objectFactory in memory that only gets used when I
initialize my app. Plus, I have more code to maintain inside the
objectFactory.

The beauty of ColdFusion is how simple it is to get things done. Why
would I want to go ruin that by jumping on the bandwagon to the
factory? I'm not trying to say that objectFartories are bad. M'kay I'm
just trying to find a way that they would help me.

complex objects are passed by reference.

But why not go ahead and get the job done with the initial load of the

you require a variable named NCID to be passed into the component but

Now this one is no different than the other invokes I have on the page, and
when I remove this one all is well. Below is the code from the actual CFC:
 cffunction name=listSelectedCouncil access=package returntype=query
hint=Get the NC we want to edit
  cfargument name=NCID type=string required=yes hint=NC_ID is
 required default=#ID#

   cfquery datasource=#Application.dsource# name=qNCSelected
SELECT *

   /cfquery
   cfreturn qNCSelected

I can run the query just fine. I am befuddled.

ANSWER: If the application waits two pages later, the visitor to your

I have to ask, how many objects are people trying to instantiate? I
have maybe 8 or 9 objects to load into the application scope. I'll
tell you right now that there wont be any noticeable savings doing
with the initialization of the app or waiting until you need it. To
make sure its understood, I'm talking about objects that will persist
until the app times out. Not some thing that would be instantiated on
every page load.

I'm going to look for some decent example of a objectFactory and do
some testing to see if there is a performance hit.

I'm getting the feeling that people are starting to use
objectFactories because its cool and new. Not because it will benefit
the performance of their applications. And we all know that a high
performance app makes the users happy.

This will always return a value of one based off the default delimiter of , .

Then it treats the variable as a string, not a list
 #listlen(form.foo)# = 0 even though form.foo = 'a'
 #listlen(form.foo)# = 1 if form.foo='a, b'

ARRRGGGHH I would like to have my cfloop manage the variable regardless

Install it using the built in server then follow the steps provided
on this page
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19575
The only thin you have to do in addition is turn off the built in webserver.

In the section titled This is the built-in JRun Web Server change
the following line
attribute name=deactivatedfalse/attribute
to
attribute name=deactivatedtrue/attribute

Hope this info helps out. It seems to be the only sure fire way to get
it to work.

Re: Installing CFMX 7

2006-07-26 Thread Phill B
Well.

I cant find the windows firewall so I can only assume that it wasn't
installed. So there shouldn't be any port blocking there.

The server is behind a firewall but that shouldn't stop internal port
traffic should it? It never stopped me from installing CF on other
servers behind the same firewall.

I did just notice that they installed McAfee Enterprise 8 on the
server. It has built in port blocking but it isn't blocking the
required ports as far as I can tell. I am going to try and disable it
and install again to see if that will help.

I tried netstat and I didn't see port 51011 listed. Doesn't that just
mean nothing is connected to it at that moment?

As far as I know, this functionality isn't available out of the box.
What you may try to do is to save the VTML files from your current version
of DW, then use them to replace the ones that ship with DW 8.

The VTML files are stored inside:
 Configuration\TagLibraries\CFML

Do this at your own risk and backup everything first :-)

MX 6 web services problem

2006-06-28 Thread Phill B
I created a web service that takes in three variables. When I call to
the web service, the variables values get assigned to the wrong
variable. The brandCode could get the value of sourceCode, SourceCode
gets the value of postalCode, and postalCode gets the brandCode.

Is there something in CF MX 6 that jacks with the variables that are
passed into it???

This is the basics of the code.

cfinvoke
cfinvokeargument name=brandCode value=1
cfinvokeargument name=postalCode value=65807
cfinvokeargument name=sourceCode value=callcenter
/cfinvoke

cffunction access=remote name=topThree output=false returntype=string
cfargument name=brandCode type = string required=yes default=
cfargument name=postalCode type = string required=yes default=
cfargument name=sourceCode type = string required=yes default=
/cffunction

Re: Can I change query results?

2006-03-24 Thread Phill B
The query is a massive query involving an inner and a few outer joins
with several conditionals around the joins. Because of new
requirements, I have to add four more tables to this beast of a query
so that I could let the DB do the math. If you have ever dealt with a
query that involves inner and outer joins, you would understand the
nightmare that is involved with guaranteeing the query always returns
the data you want.

So I need to do math on a column based on that specific columns needs.
Since adding more joined tables to the mix cause massive problems, I
want to do it after the fact. The only other choice is to rewrite the
query as a stored proc but my skills are limited in that area.
