Re: printing from browser to pre-printed form

2002-03-06 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

May be overkill for your needs, but could be ALOT easier to to deal with
than trying to get HTML layout to align with your preprinted carbon forms.

Can you get a good clean scan or get the source application file that
created the carbon forms? Or can you make a word doc that lines up with
your form?

Create a pdf form that lines up nicely with your paper version. Acrobat
reader works pretty good out of a browser and is nearly ubiquitous.

Re: OT-PayPal Limitations

2002-01-24 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

Certain PayPal Merchants used to be able to put a link on their web page for
a certain item as a BUY NOW deal . what I did to over come this - as a
PayPal merchant, on a couple items ... I emailed the link and it allowed the
payer to fill in credit card data and buy a $3,000 item, and banga- all done
not even a paypal user - but they could use their CC.

This was a while back ... Id have to fiddle aroud with that "service" again
to see if that still owrks but worth a look seee for ya.

cf 4x + works fine with sql server milliseconds values, depending upon the
field datatype in the sql server db tables.

Re: GoldMine

2001-12-30 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Spend some time in the GoldMine developers newsgroups. They make a few
cross platform objects now that help you keep the data in their complicated
db schema "synched" if accessing the data thru the "FrontRange/GoldMine"
supplied server objects.

That way if you munge your or your clients data - they wont be able to point
the finger quite so emphatically at you.

Re: How do you insert 10 form fields into one database field?

2001-12-14 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

1 - dont use cfinsert - use straight sql insert statement in a cfquery, and
there may be an issue with the db or form design...

But sounds like looping over the list of form field values will be the way.
Certainly some one more bright has a a more creative way - but that would
work.

Depending on how "dynamic" your talking about here's some ideas.

If you want to make the whole pdf file from scratch:

www.fastio.com

plethora of tools here:

Re: (OT) Using CF to create a PDF doc through XSL

2001-10-21 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Eric,

Appligent, formerly Digital Applications [www.appligent.com |
www.digapp.com ] develops what are considered some of the most robust, cross
platform PDF generation/manipulation tools, and will even sell you their
"same as adobe" pdf library for creating PDF will almost ALL current Adobe
Acrobat features and functions.

The pricing for their tools is steep, but apparently you get what you pay
for. Additionally, most development shops will NEVER get a license from
Adobe for the full PDF generation library.

Re: PDF/Verity CF 5?

2001-09-13 Thread Stephen M Aylor

If mem serves correctly its Adobe's switch to unicode support in
version 4 and 5 of the Acrobat product that causes the grief for the verity
engine bundled with CF 4x.

Wonder if you opened several of the pdf's in question in the full version of
acrobat 4, and elected to Save As - version 3 of acrobat. Acrobat 4x allows
you to elect which version you want to Save As. Dunno know if your using
some advanced features of Acro 4 / 5 - maybe you need that.

Maybe someone on the PDFZone.com site or www.planetpdf.com has a tool for
sale that will do the conversion "en masse" back to Acrobat 3x.

You may also want to drop a note to Dylan Bromby [ dont know where he's at
now ] - he posted a note that he had it working CF4.5/Verity/Acro4x.

what your output is "supposed" to look like.

Im using CFOBJECT, the free activeX toolkit from adobe and pdf forms to
successfully pipe 450 fields of data from a 500 table/11,000 column database
to a 4 page form containing 400+ fields - so I know it works, and can be
done.

The only reason you would need a tool like activePDF is to combine forms
together [thats the hard part].

All the best,

Steve

Dont know that anyone got a report as to what ended up happening those

Re: Multiple forms

2001-08-10 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Seems like your code would need to "append" or "concatenate" all those FDF
Forms/templates into one PDF Form for display vs launching 100 or so windows
of PDF Viewer in a netscape/IE window.

The approach your taking to creating a dynamic FDF file likely will NOT be
viable for this - as far as I can see.

I think your going to need the ActivePDF Toolkit object to create the PDF /
FDF file you need. You need a dynamic and programmatic way to append a
completed "PDF" form onto another. Also, its not usually a preferred method
to create any type of acrobat file pdf or fdf dynamically by just doing:

%FDF-1.2
 %âãÏÓ
1 0 obj
<< /FDF
<< /Fields [
<< /T (LASTNAME)/V (#Student.LASTNAME#)>>

Another issue you have on this is with appending multiple pdf forms into one
another where the form fields names are the same. Acrobat Reader or Full
version will choke on this, and all the fields will have the values as the
first FDF. You need a way to append the forms, AND dynamic'ly change the
form field names in your PDF Form. You need form "flattening".

www.activePDf.com toolkit does this for you. Or you can take a look at FDF
Merge From Appligent [pricey]

Re: Form builder software

2001-07-10 Thread Stephen M Aylor

scan into Omniform 4.0

Edit/tweak the OCR results

will automatically recognize "MOST" paperform "fields" and assigna generic
name.

from OmniForm - File save as PDF

Open the pdf form in full version of Adobe acrobat and edit form fields
names/formatting

This is now your online form/template. Use www.activepdf.com's toolkit to
pipe data via CF into these form templates, or you can use the Adobe Acrobat
FDF activex or java toolkit.

Re: Verity and PDF Files [free alternatives...??]

2001-03-11 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Current FREE CF bundled version of Verity has issues (read ... doesnt work!)
with Acrobat file formats 1.3 or those pdf files generated with Uni-Code
support by Adobe Acrobat tools in Acrobat 4x and up. Bummer rumor has
it that the new cf5 or next release of CF/NEO? will be bundled with the
newer version of Verity that DOES properly index PDF 1.3 or Acrobat 4x
files.

Disclaimer: Key Word - "RUMOR"

I ve heard on this list that there are several other FREE site indexing
tools available - hopefully those in the know on these will re-post.

Re: Converting Microsoft Publisher/QuarkXpress to PDF

2001-03-07 Thread Stephen M Aylor

www.planetpdf.com

Several pdf conversion/creation tools available - new Adobe Acrobat creation
tool knock-off called Jaws PDF or some such nonsense $120 vs. Adobe Acrobat
full version in the $200's. With either one - print the source app document
as any other - just pick the printer driver that is PDFWriter, and give the
file a name in the app generated dialog box - dead simple.

There are also several tools that will batch convert whole dir's of files
Word, Excel - not sure on the powerpoint docs - but certain there is a tool
for that. www.pdfzone is another good resource.

Re: New App engine for CFML

If ya had clicked the link that the original poster gave us it was to an
article discussing that same thing ... Branding.. where Allaire was
gonna sue em for the name tagFusion ... they n-ary changed the name of this
thing back to tagServlet vs. tagFusion.

But I fail to see the point in BOASTING about a tool that one knows is a
partial implementation of what Allaire is just about to release and had
pre-released in a Press Release. If tagServlet is now FREE, and all ya need
is a certain sub-set of cfml tags .. guess its pretty cool for you.

Re: New App engine for CFML

2001-02-27 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Gotta love this guy ... and this co's angle. Looks to me they are just
trying to be of enough nuisance to perhaps get "purchased" .. A wanna be
JRun if you will. what good will this tagServlet be in one quarter or so's
time?

Imagine if Allaire put out the following quote .

"Here ya go folks here's Pharoah the new JRun/CFML processing engine
redesigned. It cant process do WDDX, COM, nor X, Y nor Z you've built your
apps on ... but hey man ... its more effecient at what it can process, and
best of all ... its here to use today." yi!

sounds kinda like what the n-ary people are saying.

"Ceri Moran, Chief Operations Officer for n-ary, added: ``In recent weeks we
have seen a tremendous increase of interest in tagServlet. ColdFusion users
have expressed to us concern about the merger of Allaire and MacroMedia
(Nasdaq: MACR - news). Although there are new products from them in the
pipeline, tagServlet is here now, available for beta download.'' """

Like a report?

How many records at a throw? How complicated a layout?

www.activePDF.com

www.pdflib.com

www.fastio.com (another favorite)

Or you could create a PDF file template and use the FDF Toolkit Object from
Adobe and add the datasets into the template as needed. We do this for some
pretty complex form fill ins. (The data is easy 300+ fields ... just that
the forms layout is crucial and way to complicated to MAP out and create via
pdflib)

On thing that has caaght my eye is that ... unless something has changed

I also thought I read about a max connections issue at like 5. Or it was

>From your post ... Im not totally sure what your trying to do w/ PDF and the
conversion of a PCL print stream or whatever...??

But there is a company you can find @ www.pdfzone.com that makes a tool that
converts a PCL print stream "file" to pdf. You'll have to search the site
under tools that 'Create" pdf.

We have done some CF stuff that pipes data from sql server into a large PDF
form. (300+ unique fields of data) . Where the form "Layout/Design" is
relatively static, but the data fields are dynamic. In the case of
invoices/bills - you could do the same thing - its just take a bit more
business logic side programming than a 1 to 1 direct mapping of db field
data to pdf form field locations.

For example a client with multiple line items being billed for 4-5 services
vs. a customer with 1 item on their invoice or bill for 1 service.

We used Adobe's FDF Toolkit (thread safe ActiveX) for windows, and
interfaced our cf web app and sql db via cf's support of COM.

There's many more robust db to pdf solutions out there, the one above is a
beginning point I'd guess. Further dependent on your budget :-)

www.pdfzone.com
www.activepdf.com
www.digapp.com - high end server side generated pdf for all platforms

Re: HTML/OS

2001-02-07 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

I'd like to see that built in DB hold up under about 20 min's of
toysrus/autobytel traffic :-)

And Im sure that the db's robustness will allow ALL kinds of rocking stored
proc's, table joins etc. Query cacheing? Guess no one finds that useful...
must be just me

Hmmm.. how cross platform compatible is this Built In DB - one wonders - if
it is "proprietary". So I guess it isnt "portable" at all if I cant run my
app against it or with an access/oracle/sql7/mySQL backend now is it?

or lets hope those 3rd party ODBC drivers rip

Hmmm

ALLR/MACR Merger - ColdFusion to be "repositioned" ?????

Sands Brothers Investment Research Covering MACR

http://investor.cnet.com/investor/news/newsitem/0-9900-1028-4599632-1.html?t
ag=yhoo

In the past, Macromedia has made a point of NOT participating directly in
the application server business but rather to partner with leader's in the
space. Management is aware of this issue and pointed out that Allaire's
flagship product, ColdFusion, would be repositioned such that Allaire's CFML
technology would be maintained and that applications built with CFML will
run on top of application servers from other vendors.

Hrrr..

I dont see where the ALLR share price is even a factor. So your formula is
wrong.

The deal is 1 share of allr stock is worth .2 of 1 MACR share + $3 in cash
for every 1 allr share. Or $11.8 per share based current close of $44. If
MACR goes up its gets better, if it drops, it gets worse. regardless what
allr does - it doesnt really matter unless you want to unload your allr
shares.

Re: Macromedia to Merge with Allaire, $360 Million Deal

2001-01-16 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

For the ALLR shareholders here: Lets say ya have 500 shares of allr.

You get (hosed) : 100 Shares Macromedia (500 x 0.2) + $1,500 ($3.00 per ALLR
share in cash)

and bTW MM shares were down from $44 - 39 on the news, and MM beat the
streets estimates, but analysts feel the news of the merger and the sales
numbers is confusing.

http://biz.yahoo.com/oo/010116/48843.html

Yippee . :-( Orfao and Gerth and the ALLaire boyz sold this thing
co. the river. Problems must have been bigger than we thought with the
Spectra sales channel or something . $11.8 per share? WT Hell is that?

Re: [OT:Stock price]

2001-01-13 Thread Stephen M Aylor

H.. does to me. But I'm a little different. That aside ...

Its up 21.+ % over the previous day (bout time) Following a 25+ % increase
over that previous day close

Thats rather strong right now - aint it?

But, a $5k / 1,142 share purchase on 1/3/01 then sold on 1/12/01 yields
$8,571. (tax issues excluded)

That ' ll go long way towards repairing the real Y2K problem :-) (internet
bubble bust syndrome)

Re: SSL

2001-01-09 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Im no PKI/Crypto wizard ... however; Im not so sure why these (rainbow)
cards are sooo pricey, when now ... both 3Com and Intel Adapters have this
or similar tech on their most basic NIC's.

the Intel PILA8470C3, and even the PILA8460C3 Desktop adapter. In addition I
beleive the newer Gigabit fiver nics as well as Intels new Gigabit over
Copper nics have both the onboard encryption processors as well as the IP
Traffic acceleration chips.

PILA8460C3 - $60 +/-
PILA8470C3 - $80+/-
PWLA8490SX - $300 +/-
PWLA8490T - $295 +/-

Whats the diff's between the rainbow stuff and 3coms/Intels NIC's ?

But it appears the natural instincts of programmers to have extreme "order"
continues to shine thru .

instead of making seperate lists . enforcing the once desired subject

cf-talk[SQL] - whats faster? select "*" or .
cf-talk[Verity] - refreshing collection fails
cf-talk[COM] - how to register the damn object!!!

I think you be able to get it without t tooo much hassle.

Goto.com does it - esnipe.com does it - ebay just bought www.half.com - a CF
site, not that that has "anything" to do with what you - asked - i just like
to insert worthless trivia in posts when ever possible. :-)

2000-11-30 Thread Stephen M Aylor

A simple request to keep this type of commentary off list would have been
sufficient - yet you wasted little time and gave little effort in
contemplating the reprocussions of tossing your 2 pence in the ring.

No more commentary on this - now that you've got your verbal diarrhea off
your chest right?

Spare us all your banter as well please. Repub or Dem or Green Party - your
rebuttal commentary is on par with the intellect you alledge Bush to
manifest.

Save it next time or at least make an apology - or better yet - respond
directly to the original offending poster.

Also, I dont beleive CF Verity "ever" properly gave you the ability to
display the file name, author, create date, and keywords that make up the

signs to get to it actually read "Little Saigon" next 3 exits.

Ya know ... I never have heard a dog bark while ive been there :-)

They had a beef dish on one of the menus at a Chineese restaurant I was at 3

" with a Dark Brown suace glaze - a delicacy that defies description"

I also recall some discussion of the CF bundled Verity engine not supporting

what the bundled verity engine can and cant do, or if version 4x pdf's are a
non issue - your in the deal.

Re: MAIL, HELP ME FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

2000-11-15 Thread Stephen M. Aylor

try the eval of www.relayfax.com

MDaemon/Deerfield's - RelayFax Server - I use it with outlook express and
PDF's - works pretty good.

I had a bunch o' problems with efax - major LAG time

Other than that, Im devoid of ideas / solutions for ya.

Is efax a must? I found it was cool and all, but for local faxing - it
wasnt cost effective, but if all your faxing was long distance - it may be a
bene - also - attachment faxing with them took almost 2x as long as on my
14.4 modems w/ relayfax - go figure.

Re: follow-up question to PDF [sample ActiveX]

2000-11-13 Thread Stephen M Aylor

Max,

cool... thanks for the info. Can you share your cfml for this technique say
on a single field form/fdf file example. Im interested in your cfinclude
approach - im not getting that part - i understand the theory.

Not that I disagree with this approach - placing cf vars in the cfoutput
wrapped fdf file - but for what we were doing, and based on similar
debates - COM vs. edit text files, I came to the conlcusion with feedback
from Aymeric Grassart, that the COM object was a more "robust" approach.
This was important for us as our forms are 2-20 pages when combined, and
easily 200-300 fields per 2 pages.

Too much fdf code to go hunting thru on the fdf to find the location of the
vars vs. writing our own . I also feel that it will be easier to
maintain - long term. [long story] Same old thing tho' - differnt
tools for different needs. If your forms are rather simple, Im confident
your method is way simpler, but where form design, layout and fields change
continuously - I prefer our appraoch - i feel like I have more control -
maybe I dont, but.....

is a plain text file (with a fairly simple structure). Simply put in your
CF variables as the form field values (you can do this from inside Acrobat
even), wrap a CFOUTPUT around whole FDF file, then CFINCLUDE the FDF file
preceded by a CFCONTENT type="application/vnd.fdf". There is a /F switch at
the end of the FDF file which needs to specify a URL that points to the PDF
template. You can include any CF commands within the FDF file.

I have not tested the Adobe FDF ActiveX aka Adobe FDF Toolkit under
heavy loads, but its seems to work ok so far.

http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/acrosdk/forms.html

http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/acrosdk/DOCS/fdftkref.pdf

Here's what we're doing with forms - so far .
[kudos to Aymeric Grassart - of course]

1. Create your PDF document/form distill it/pdfwriter driver from word
etc.

2. Draw the "to be filled in form fields" on your pdf doc/form and assign
them properties
using the Adobe Acrobat full version form tool. There are other methods
that are kinda
interesting too - like scanning the doc from OmniForm4 and saving as a PDF
:-)

3. Inside Adobe Acrobat - full version - export FDF data (blank form data)
to an FDF file on the webserver. This fdf will be used later as a
"template" FDF to be modified / filled in in your process.
[myFirstFDF.fdf]

4. Use to call the tools in the FDF Toolkit activeX to pump data
into your
your PDf Form/file from steps 1&2 above.

See real simple example below:

myFDF1 = theFDF.FDFSetValue ("fdfField1",   "#CFQuery1#",  "false");
myFDF2 = theFDF.FDFSetValue ("fdfField2","#CFQuery2#",  "false");
myFDF3 = theFDF.FDFSetValue ("fdfField3","#CFQuery3#",  "false");
