Feature. The email is a reminder to trim your posts, not a message saying that
the job has been done for you.

Error reporting feature is great, however, I got a message too long
error and it came through anyway... bug or feature?

Re: (admin) List Status

2006-07-31 Thread Mary Jo Sminkey
I'm all for trimming posts and certainly understand the need, but I wish
everyone would leave the last post (or part of it) in the reply so I could
have a reference point to responses.

I agree, although I do love this list for how well people generally do trim
their posts. I run a few yahoogroups and people just always leave the entire
previous post(s) attached and it just grows longer and longer...I wish *they*
had a feature to remind people to trim their posts because I usually have to do
it myself.

Looks like some new features for those of us that read the list through the
web, such a login box on the reply page (I always forget to login first).
Thanks for adding this!

Re: (admin) List Status

2006-07-31 Thread Michael Dinowitz
All I ask is that people trim content from their posts that is not
important. I think the filter is set to 100 lines, which is usually more
than enough for anyone. :)
As for the new features, they've been on my list for a while and I just
needed to get them in. If there's any others you would like, let me know off
list and I'll see about adding them in. Currently my list has on it better
post error messages, a tag cloud for all lists, better CSS, a book review
link in place of the Amazon ads, direct ads rather than Google ones and an
announcement for Sandy's CSS class so people can go to it and then give me
CSS feedback. :)

I'd still like to see Michael implement some kind of automated
trimming function for the mail. Perhaps it could leave the
Original Message header, as below, and then leave the
next 10-20 lines of the message and trim the rest, including his
links etc., at the bottom.

No more manual trimming and no more looong posts...

The problem with that would be that every mail client (in every
different language) has it's own version of 'Original Message'.

 Actually, we just priced this:

It is about $5000 per cpu if you get SQL Server Standard edition and
about
20,000 (not sure about this one) per cpu if you want Enterprise
edition. The
difference between the editions is failover and uptime tools.

RE: [admin] List status

I am sure performance wise it is better, but the admin tools aren't
great. There is nothing even close to Enterprise Manager. And someone
correct me if I am wrong, but does MySQL support stored procs yet? Last
time I checked it still didn't. It just seems clunky to me.

Mike, who hosts the lists, do they have a dedicated SQL box that you
could use rather than purchasing your own, or do you host the lists
yourself?

that MySql is no slouch.

MySql 4.1 (yes, it's vaporware currently) is slated to support stored procedures...

I know that MySQL cannot really stand up to MS SQL but
when you are talking about the amount that MS SQL costs
versus using MySQL, I would us MySQL unless someone just
wanted to pay for MS SQL.

  Actually, we just priced this:

It is about $5000 per cpu if you get SQL Server Standard edition and
 about
20,000 (not sure about this one) per cpu if you want Enterprise
 edition. The
difference between the editions is failover and uptime tools.

Does mysql have full text searching capabilities like
MS SQL if not then they would be almost pointless to
use MY SQL to search through the list archives.

I don't know whether MySQL provides that, but you could just as easily use
Verity for that, assuming you're writing the front end in CF. The K2 stuff
in CF 5 and CF MX is pretty nice.

2002-05-15 Thread Pete Ruckelshaus

Allow me to interject a word of reason here, from the perspective of someone
who runs a well-used web resource that I almost shut down because of the
time/money involved. A very limited number of people offered some financial
donations, which covered about half of what it cost to host the
site...enough to convince me to keep it running. But a FAR greater number
of people tried to tell me where to host the site (it was already some
pretty inexpensive hosting, with good features and support), what
technologies to use (Why use CF when PHP is free...idiotic stuff like that),
how to build it, what database to use, etc. In the end, I was almost sorry
that the save the site effort even got started.

Here's what we need to give Michael. Financial and moral support. PayPal
him a couple of bucks. If he has a question about what sort of database to
use, he'll ask it, but I don't think he did ask that question (considering
he said he had a license for SQL7 that he could use), so we should all just
let him get on with it. Anything more is just noise.

Sorry, I just had to pipe in with my 1/50th of a buck.

RE: [admin] List status

2002-05-15 Thread Michael Dinowitz

Sorry, Judith's sick in bed and I just got into work and online. The list membership
for CF-Talk has been down reciently to 1856 members on list. If you add in the NNTP
readers, archive readers and all we'd have about double that. This is the reason I
want to provide better resources. To get the information to more people through more
channels.
My goal for the lists are to have them as lists with immediate delivery, digests on
the hour on up to once a day. An archive that can be searched and posted from that
will include the proper threading (message id and reference id) when a message is
posed from them. An NNTP interface so that a post can go from NNTP to the list and the
archives in one fell swoop. Finally, a web service interface so that other devices can
get the data.
This may sound like a lot of work but it's rather easy if done in steps. The staggered
digests and the archive are done. Plugging a verity search into that is simple to do
and automating parts of it are one of my specialties (I think I use the scheduler more
than anyone else around). The posting from the archives to the list is done on the
back end and just needs a nice front end for it. I wrote a new CF_MakeTree that's
tighter than hell to get the threading done right. NNTP is something that I'm talking
to someone about and they can comment on it if they want. Web services is just a quick
CFC to the archives with no real front end.
Step by step it's being done and will get done.

RE: [admin] List status - A CHALLENGE

2002-05-15 Thread Lee Fuller

Ok.. Putting on my board of directors hat...

So, if I read things properly, we're (at best) about 3700, and at worst
(if you figure 1/2 are simply not active) 900.

To be conservative, we're looking at 3/4 of the actual subscriber base
(not NNTP) as potential donors. That makes it about 1400.

After all is said and done, you'll need more than $5000, even with the
wonderful generosity of some who are donating systems (thanks guys!!).
I'm guessing more like $6500.

Simple math says...

6500 / 1400 = $4.64 per subscriber.

Reality is, that's a perfect world scenario. But it also shows that
it's not a huge issue to overcome.

So, I will offer a challenge to all of whom are able to do so. Donate
$200 to the fund to build up this list. If you cannot donate $200, then
donate whatever you can. However, if we cut the number above in 1/2,
it's about $10 each. If you cut it into 1/4, it's about $20. So, I'm
willing to pay for 40 of the 1400... Anyone else?

Let's move this forward quickly, and support the person/entity that has
tirelessly supported us. He deserves it.

Check's on the way Michael, payable to you.

Re: [admin] List status - A CHALLENGE

2002-05-15 Thread Howie Hamlin

Personally, I think that people would be more willing to donate if there was some kind
of indication as to the toal amount needed
(itemized) and an indicator of the amount donated. Having some kind of meter would be
helpful. Something like:

$10,000 -- Our goal
|
|
$7500
|
|
$5000
|
-- $3500 Donated so far
|
$2500
|
|
--

Also, a list of the top 10 or so contributors would be good.

This way, potential donors could get an idea about what the goal is, how much is
needed for the goal and the current status. The
top contributors list would be a good way to thank the people that donated the most.

Howie

I think you misread my intentions. I figured that if someone could see that the goal

inclined to donate. People are sometimes apathetic and need to see that a goal was

before donating they may throw in 10 bucks because they may figure that there were
enough donations. If, however, they could see
that the donations were a few thousand short then they may be inclined to donate $100.

RE: [admin] List status

Hey Michael,

This sounds great! Can I suggest something for the people that get the list
at work? How about a weekend hiatus digest version? Something for people
that read during the week but don't view the list on weekends and want to
stay up with what happened with a simple digest email or two. Just a
thought.

I like the digest-an-hour idea...this list is great, but my inbox gets
pummeled on some days.

Thanks for your hard work,

An indicator of what's been given is a good idea. I'm not so hot on publishing who
gave or not for a simple reason, I don't want anyone to feel bad about not giving or
giving less than anyone else. Despite my reputation as the evil one (blessed be me), I
do care about others feelings. :)

 Actually, we just priced this:

It is about $5000 per cpu if you get SQL Server Standard edition and
about
20,000 (not sure about this one) per cpu if you want Enterprise
edition. The

I think you misread my intentions. I figured that if someone could see that
the goal was not yet reached then they would be more
inclined to donate. People are sometimes apathetic and need to see that a
goal was not reached. If, say, someone waits a few weeks
before donating they may throw in 10 bucks because they may figure that
there were enough donations. If, however, they could see
that the donations were a few thousand short then they may be inclined to
donate $100.

Don't agree.. (a first for me and you Howie! grin)

Michael will put to good use whatever is there, and I'm sure will report
on what's left after his decisions are made about how to handle things,
and what he's put in place. Knowing him, he'll probabaly ask the
group. But I trust Michael and his decisions.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't think the numbers should be hidden.. And
I have NO doubt that Michael is above that. However, ANYTHING he
receives from us will be well worth it, for the priceless information we

Let him handle it, and let him report to us what's there afterwards, if

RE: [admin] List status

Mike, who hosts the lists, do they have a dedicated SQL box that you
could use rather than purchasing your own, or do you host the lists
yourself?
CFHosting has been providing out bandwidth for the last year or three. They may have a
shared SQL box and I've already contacted them about some of this.

Yes, but compared to the performance of MS Access how does it do? I'm
just talking performance, not administration. There are

  Actually, we just priced this:

It is about $5000 per cpu if you get SQL Server Standard edition and
 about
20,000 (not sure about this one) per cpu if you want Enterprise
 edition. The
difference between the editions is failover and uptime tools.

  Actually, we just priced this:

It is about $5000 per cpu if you get SQL Server Standard edition and
 about
20,000 (not sure about this one) per cpu if you want Enterprise
 edition. The
difference between the editions is failover and uptime tools.

RE: [admin] List status

2002-05-15 Thread Kevin Miller

Microsoft's academic pricing a quite low.

We could piggy back on a SQL box that's on the same network. It all has to do with the
way the archives and the lists are interacting. In reality, they're one in the same
and have to be together (I think I posted the layout).
Now what exactly do you mean by $500 for SQL 2k?

At 09:49 AM 5/15/02, you wrote:
Michael are we talking getting an actually box at your place (or where ever to do
this) or you can you piggy back on an already live sql enterprise box (thats not even
close to being utilized)? I am not sure how legal this might be or even if my boss
would go for it, but at $500 for sql 2000 enterprise (state prices!!!) maybe
something else could be done...

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 05/15/02 08:59AM
I know that MySQL cannot really stand up to MS SQL but
when you are talking about the amount that MS SQL costs
versus using MySQL, I would us MySQL unless someone just
wanted to pay for MS SQL.

I am not a big fan of MySQL. I have to do some work in it and it pales
 in comparison.

I think you misread my intentions. I figured that if someone
 could see that
the goal was not yet reached then they would be more
inclined to donate. People are sometimes apathetic and need to see
that a
goal was not reached. If, say, someone waits a few weeks
before donating they may throw in 10 bucks because they may figure
that
there were enough donations. If, however, they could see
that the donations were a few thousand short then they may be
inclined to
 donate $100.

Actually, we ran the community suite at the last MM conference and will be doing the
same this year. For those who missed it, we had food, games, community speakers, about
60 or so books to raffle off and a reading library with over 20 titles. It was a
blast! Of course, I have a standing offer to speak anywhere I am or can be brought to.
I'll probably be in Florida around July 8th

 could see that
the goal was not yet reached then they would be more
inclined to donate. People are sometimes apathetic and need to see
that a
goal was not reached. If, say, someone waits a few weeks
before donating they may throw in 10 bucks because they may figure
that
there were enough donations. If, however, they could see

inclined to
 donate $100.

RE: [admin] List status

2002-05-15 Thread Michael Dinowitz

I'll think on the weekend off version. It'll be interesting. :)
The big problem I had with the new digests was that you can't have a single digest a
day with a huge list like CF-Talk. It gets really messy with timeouts and such. I
think the slowest I'm setting it for this list is 4 times a day. Other lists can have
it as once a day. Again, not perfect but better than what's here now.

At 12:39 PM 5/15/02, you wrote:
Hey Michael,

This sounds great! Can I suggest something for the people that get the list
at work? How about a weekend hiatus digest version? Something for people
that read during the week but don't view the list on weekends and want to
stay up with what happened with a simple digest email or two. Just a
thought.

I like the digest-an-hour idea...this list is great, but my inbox gets
pummeled on some days.

Thanks for your hard work,

Subject: RE: [admin] List status

Sorry, Judith's sick in bed and I just got into work and online. The list
membership for CF-Talk has been down reciently to 1856 members on list. If
you add in the NNTP readers, archive readers and all we'd have about double
that. This is the reason I want to provide better resources. To get the
information to more people through more channels.
My goal for the lists are to have them as lists with immediate delivery,
digests on the hour on up to once a day. An archive that can be searched and
posted from that will include the proper threading (message id and reference
id) when a message is posed from them. An NNTP interface so that a post can
go from NNTP to the list and the archives in one fell swoop. Finally, a web
service interface so that other devices can get the data.
This may sound like a lot of work but it's rather easy if done in steps. The
staggered digests and the archive are done. Plugging a verity search into
that is simple to do and automating parts of it are one of my specialties (I
think I use the scheduler more than anyone else around). The posting from
the archives to the list is done on the back end and just needs a nice front
end for it. I wrote a new CF_MakeTree that's tighter than hell to get the
threading done right. NNTP is something that I'm talking to someone about
and they can comment on it if they want. Web services is just a quick CFC to
the archives with no real front end.
Step by step it's being done and will get done.

Actually, we ran the community suite at the last MM conference and will be doing
the same this year. For those who missed it, we
had food, games, community speakers, about 60 or so books to raffle off and a reading
library with over 20 titles. It was a blast!
Of course, I have a standing offer to speak anywhere I am or can be brought to. I'll
probably be in Florida around July 8th

RE: [admin] List status - A CHALLENGE

2002-05-15 Thread Ryan Pieszak

Actually, I wasn't serious. The big joke here in Buffalo is that nobody
comes here on purpose, that nobody wants to be here, it's a rotting city.
If anybody *actually* wants this CF-Talk Expo to be held in Buffalo, you'll
have to let me know what you need. Is this something that's been done in
the past?

I think you misread my intentions. I figured that if someone
could see that
the goal was not yet reached then they would be more
inclined to donate. People are sometimes apathetic and need to see

 that a

goal was not reached. If, say, someone waits a few weeks
before donating they may throw in 10 bucks because they may figure

 that

there were enough donations. If, however, they could see
that the donations were a few thousand short then they may be

 inclined to

donate $100.

Don't agree.. (a first for me and you Howie! grin)

Michael will put to good use whatever is there, and I'm sure will

 report

on what's left after his decisions are made about how to handle

 things,

and what he's put in place. Knowing him, he'll probabaly ask the
group. But I trust Michael and his decisions.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't think the numbers should be hidden..

 And

I have NO doubt that Michael is above that. However, ANYTHING he
receives from us will be well worth it, for the priceless

 information we

gain from this list, and ultimately his support.

Let him handle it, and let him report to us what's there

 afterwards, if

anything. If anything's left, we can all discuss/vote on what to

 do

with it.. I'm sure.

Real question now...where can I send a payment for this list if I'm not part
