I just got in from helping the highway department remove one of our trees from
the street in front of our house. Weather is mighty nautical up here today. BIG
noreaster sliding through the area slowly.

I think I’ll head down to check on the boat later today.

Weather looks great for the Gulf Coast for the next 6-7 days. Highs near 80,
lows under 60 and no chance of rain.

The Admiral and I are seizing the weather window and taking Touche' to
Pensacola for a few weeks. We want to watch the Blue Angels Home Show the
weekend of Nov. 8. We'll spend weekends there and bring it back to Lake
Pontchartrain after Thanksgiving.

Plan is to leave early Friday and get to Gulfport, MS (10 hours). Then depart
early Saturday and get to The Wharf Marina on the ICW at Orange Beach, AL (12
hours) in time to watch an evening football game. On to Pensacola for lunch
Sunday (4 hours). Winds look light so probably have to motor but should be
pleasant delivery anyway.

Stus-List Valuing old Sails for Donation

2014-10-23 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

I'm looking to donate some of my old sails to charity. Each one that I have
contacted asks that I provide a written valuation for them which they will sign
off on.

Does anyone know of a formula or other method for valuing used sails? I'm not
looking to cheat the government (though don't get me started) or cause problems
for a charity.

There has to be a way to come up with a fair value, no?

Appreciate any ideas or website links that could start the process.

All the best,

I'd win this had I kept the storm jib from my prior boat a Vision 6.60 The jib
came from a 50s vintage Lightning (original sail) and other than torn up batten
pockets the sail was great. I still have the mainsail in my basement. I sold
the Vision 6 years ago.

Dennis,

We are thinking about going over for the Blue Angels show in November too.
We will likely go over that Friday though and raft up with the Cruising
group from Fairhope Yacht Club. Would love to meet the Admiral and you if
we get the chance. Its great to put a face to the name!

Just in case you are interested, we are participating in the Double-Handed
Race this Saturday, Oct 25, and the goDaddy Bowl Regatta next Saturday, Nov
1. Class winners in the goDaddy historically receive game tickets as well
as t-shirts and trophies. Both races are hosted by Fairhope Yacht Club
http://fairhopeyachtclub.com/ and run here in Mobile Bay. We usually have
some transient space on the t-piers and would love to have you come and
visit. Fairhope Visitor's Guide
http://www.cofairhope.com/home/showdocument?id=1502 The club is within
walking distance of downtown and there is something going on most nights
right at the club.

You may come to visit us and decide to stay and go over to the show with
the group from Fairhope!

Weather looks great for the Gulf Coast for the next 6-7 days. Highs
near 80, lows under 60 and no chance of rain.

The Admiral and I are seizing the weather window and taking Touche' to
Pensacola for a few weeks. We want to watch the Blue Angels Home Show
the weekend of Nov. 8. We'll spend weekends there and bring it back to
Lake Pontchartrain after Thanksgiving.

Plan is to leave early Friday and get to Gulfport, MS (10 hours). Then
depart early Saturday and get to The Wharf Marina on the ICW at Orange
Beach, AL (12 hours) in time to watch an evening football game. On to
Pensacola for lunch Sunday (4 hours). Winds look light so probably have
to motor but should be pleasant delivery anyway.

Sadly Diamond Girl is shorn of her mast and already on the hard.
Maybe I will go sit on the deck, look out over big beautiful Georgian
Bay and enjoy the fine weather this weekend with a beverage.

Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish

2014-10-23 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior
floorboards on the Enterprise.

Of course, I want something that is easy to apply, takes a coat or two
to have a award-winning appearance, is durable and something that will last for
a decade or more. And since that produce doesn’t exist, I’d like to know what
would be the best compromise.

The boat's up for the winter, so I’d like to get brushing over the next
few weekends.

All the best,

Edd

2014-10-23 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
when I finished my companionway boards I coated them with West System epoxy and
then 8 coats of Epiphanies Spar Varnish. They are are holding up very well,
but they are never in direct sunlight as the cockpit is covered all summer and
the I have the winter cover on, well, all winter...LOLI finished my handrails
without the epoxy and I'm sorry I did, Although they are holding up pretty
well I'm seeing some weathering in spots. If I were to do my sole (which I may
this winter if she doesn't sell), I'd use that method without hesitation. I
would research more as to the varnish. I've seen that conversation go by on
here not too long ago but my CRS syndrome prevents my recollection of the
recommendations in that thread... Danny

Joe: I also have a 170 Genoa that came with my boat (1978)...but I've4
never used it. Where do you lead the sheets for a 170. My 38MKII uses a
155 regularly and that sheet leads almost back to the winch. I figured that
the previous owner (or the original owner) used the transom corner fitting
for a turning block location.

Incidentally, I have the original IOR rating certificate listing the 170
with a penalty of about 3-4 seconds.to offset that, the owner shortened
the main luff dimension by about 3 feetbalanced out his penalty

Always wondered how you would trim that much sail since it comes back to
within a couple of feet of the transom.Sail bag is labeled H1..North
Special 170 Genoa.

Someday I'll have to get it out and just set it up to see where it
leads.

I did the floors on Paradigm with 3 encapsulation coats of WEST System,
followed with5 or 6 coats of Epifanes gloss. They looked great and lasted
beautifully. This time around I'd be tempted to use Varathane Semi-gloss
solvent-based over the epoxy, it's a much faster build and extremely
durable.

Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest

2014-10-23 Thread Ronald B. Frerker via CnC-List
I still use the 160% on my boat. I believe folks used a 170% on it as well,
back in the early seventies; certainly helps when the wind is below the 12-15
range.
I think the phrf penalty got folks to drop down, but in 8-10 the boat certainly
needs the bigger sail.
When I bought the boat, the smallest sail was a 150% mule; 90% hoist and
bulletproof. Was hell to tack in heavy air. Got smart and bought a used 135%
and it's great.

I’ve4 never used it.  Where do you lead the sheets for a
 170.  My 38MKII uses a 155 regularly and that sheet leads
almost back to the winch.  I figured that the previous
owner (or the original owner) used the transom corner
fitting for a turning block location.

Incidentally, I have the original IOR rating
certificate listing the 170 with a penalty of about 3-4
seconds………..to offset that, the owner shortened the
 main luff dimension by about
  3 feet……….balanced out his
 penalty……….

Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish

2014-10-23 Thread dwight via CnC-List
Danny

So you put Spar Varnish on top of epoxy, I am wondering why? Does it give a
better shine or is it more abraison resistant or something else? The
polyurethane floor finish that I used on some oak flooring in my home has a
lasting shine and stands up to normal indoor/outdoor shoe traffic very
well.actually that part is the most heavily travlled flooring in the house

I took my old teak and holy cabin sole to bare wood with chemical paint
stripper and a scraper followed by a light sanding and solvent wash and
applied 1 coat of Sikkens marine cetol and that last 8 years very well and
it saw a lot of use. This past season before launch I stripped a few bad
spots that had developed near the nav station again with paint stripper,
then a light spot sanding, solvent wash and 1 coat of cetol on the bare
spots only and then a couple days later solvent washed the entire sole and
applied 1 coat of the Sikkens cetol on all of it , this time the same cetol
that I used on my cedar home (seems like just about the same stuff as the
marine cetol but again 1/3 the cost and besides I had left over from doing
my house.I am very pleased.not high gloss, sort of satin finish but all the
rest of the teak, and there is quite a lot of teak on a 35MKII is oiled, so
the satin finsih on the sole matches the bulkheads and other interior teak
quite well, not overly slippery and pretty darn good appearance for a cabin
sole that is now 40 years old. Not that much work to do and not that much
work to maintain and not much cost either.can't imagine doing 8 coats!!!

when I finished my companionway boards I coated them with West System epoxy
and then 8 coats of Epiphanies Spar Varnish. They are are holding up very
well, but they are never in direct sunlight as the cockpit is covered all
summer and the I have the winter cover on, well, all winter...LOL

I finished my handrails without the epoxy and I'm sorry I did, Although
they are holding up pretty well I'm seeing some weathering in spots.

If I were to do my sole (which I may this winter if she doesn't sell), I'd
use that method without hesitation. I would research more as to the
varnish. I've seen that conversation go by on here not too long ago but my
CRS syndrome prevents my recollection of the recommendations in that
thread...

Listers,

Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior floorboards on
the Enterprise.

Of course, I want something that is easy to apply, takes a coat or two to
have a award-winning appearance, is durable and something that will last for
a decade or more. And since that produce doesn't exist, I'd like to know
what would be the best compromise.

The boat's up for the winter, so I'd like to get brushing over the next few
weekends.

All the best,

I started racing Touche' with the 170. Came with a 6 second penalty. Did
a 100 mile distance race, 15 miles upwind and then 85 miles under the
chute. Using the chute, the 6 seconds was indeed a penalty. Took the 170
off the boat, amended my PHRF cert to 155% max sail and got 6 seconds.
Never looked back.

Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest

2014-10-23 Thread dwight via CnC-List
Joe

You are describing my exact experience with furling gear.bags of good
Sobstad sails, the biggest 162% and a beautiful 135% neither cut for the
furler that never see action because I am a lazy sailor.this past season I
started with my newest furling Doyle Dacron 135% that had just come from the
loft after overhaul and getting a new uv strip and I did my first sail with
it on a very windy day so I decided to try my Sobstad furling #3 next time
out, which I measured at 120% on the back lawn. It worked quite well and had
decent shape but felt more like a worn bed sheet than a crisp Dacron sail.it
stayed on the furler all summer long and we used it a lot and had fun but it
contributed to 2 upwind poundings I took from a CC 33 MKII in lighter air
where my Doyle furling 135 excels.the 33 MKII points real good and may still
have outdone us but at least I think it would have been more of a contest.I
know the other skipper, he's a very good sailor and he was single handed.I
had 1 crew helping each time.not sure if he was using a furling sail but I
expect so, he's now a cruiser and not a racer, just like me, but it seems we
race each other for about 20 minutes to a half hour every time we get close
to each other now.no offwind hookups yet

 Listers,

Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior
 floorboards on the Enterprise.

Of course, I want something that is easy to apply, takes a
coat or two to have a award-winning appearance, is durable and something
that will last for a decade or more. And since that produce doesn’t exist,
I’d like to know what would be the best compromise.

The boat's up for the winter, so I’d like to get brushing
 over the next few weekends.

 All the best,

 Edd

 Listers,

I'm looking to donate some of my old sails to charity. Each one that I
have contacted asks that I provide a written valuation for them which they
 will sign off on.

Does anyone know of a formula or other method for valuing used sails? I'm
not looking to cheat the government (though don't get me started) or cause
 problems for a charity.

There has to be a way to come up with a fair value, no?

Appreciate any ideas or website links that could start the process.

Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest

2014-10-23 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
Calypso’s storm jib is from the Hood loft near Boston made in 1970. I had the
storm jib converted to work with Calypso’s current forestay in 2011 for our
trip around Vancouver Island. I have another bag from the same era that I
believe is the storm trysail but I have not hoisted it to be sure.

I am going to take the working jib down to the boat in case we get a honking 25

from CC when the boat was new in 1973. Does anyone have an older sail than
that?

I do not.

It is certainly not as slippery as several years ago, when I put some armor all
on the floor. Looked great, cleaned up great, and the kids could slide from one
end to the other in their socks.

I have the polyurethane on my steps as well, but I also have 4 1” wide strips
per step of a 3M product,

The clear version, you can kind of see the wood through it.

Stus-List Standing rigging replacement

2014-10-23 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
I was thinking of replacing my standing rigging on my 26. I am thinking I can
put it in a box and ship it to wherever so they can duplicate what I have now.
I haven't really noticed anything wrong with it other than the threaded end for
the turnbuckle on one of my lowers is bent slightly. I am sure everything is
original 1977 so it may be a good idea to replace it. I would prefer to not
involve cross border if possible but wouldn't rule it out. Does anyone want to
recommend someone in Canada. Or USA if price is right.

 All,

It's with a sad heart I list our boat. I bought her just 2 years ago and
racked up some big yard bills, thinking we'd have her forever. Now we're
moving to Cincinnati for work and it just doesn't make sense to manage a
boat from afar. So I'm listing her for what I paid for her, about half of
what I have into her. A really sweet boat. My 3 year old misses her almost
 as much as I do.

 The listing is here:

 http://m.yachtworld.com/mobile/boats/1985/C-%26-C-37-2764228/Lower/CT/United-States

I've really enjoyed the list, been a big help sorting out the boat. And
for just two years the bankers might laugh at me but I loved every minute
 if it.

I hope you all keep enjoying your CC's!

Listers,

Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior floorboards on the
Enterprise.

Of course, I want something that is easy to apply, takes a coat or two to have
a award-winning appearance, is durable and something that will last for a
decade or more. And since that produce doesn’t exist, I’d like to know what
would be the best compromise.

The boat's up for the winter, so I’d like to get brushing over the next few
weekends.

All the best,

Did you strip right down to bare wood?  If so what method did you use for
stripping?  Chemical, sanding, scraper?

The video on Jamestown distributor says he scrapes and believes that keeping
the scraper sharp, maybe 4 passes before resharpening, is the best and cleanest
method.  Very little dust, very little wood removed.

I still have the twenty some odd sails identified as 7/71 that came with
Corsair. The drifter and the .5 oz spinnaker still go out to the boat
every year. The Drifter gets used anytime that the wind is less than 6
knots. I think the Staysail might go out next year. Most hang from the
rafters of the Pole Barn. They are hanked on sails and we changed over

Better pics. Seems well maintained. Price depends on how fast you want to
sell. $40-80k seems about right. You're really gonna have to capitalize
on the CC pedigree if you want to maximize price. There are 5 year old
Beneteaus coming back from charter service that are going for $80k. So you
have to make an argument for what makes a CC so great and worth it.

At the time I used them they were marketed as competition to stay-lock. If
I remember correctly they were guaranteed to between 90 and 100% of the
wire rope break strength. I up sized all the wire and pin fittings. IIRC
Break strength of 5000, SWL up to 3500. Tensioned to #1100.

IIRC the fittings also work with dyform or rod.

I'm having my boats bottom soda blasted and then I'm going to be applying a

(who recommends 4-5 coats 10 mil minimum) won't honor their warrantee if you
use less. Never short for opinions I'm hoping you folks can provide me some
recommendations for barrier coatings.

Are they spraying the barrier coat? You'll get a smoother (faster) finish
if they do. Hard to tell exactly how thick each coat is, so a 50% increase
is probably good insurance. Just think, you'll probably only have to (want
to) do this once so you might as well do it well the first time. My yard
also recommended application of the bottom paint while the barrier was not
fully cured.

2000E barrier coat which frankly seems a bit much. According to them,
Interlux (who recommends 4-5 coats 10 mil minimum) won't honor their
warrantee if you use less. Never short for opinions I'm hoping you folks
can provide me some recommendations for barrier coatings.

 Thanks,

 Dave J

Re: Stus-List Barrier Coating

Josh is correct. You will get a better bond with the Interprotect if you
apply your bottom paint before the barrier coat has cured. The label says
if you can still make a thumb print in the barrier coat, you're good to go.
The window for application will vary with temperature. You will have more
time in cooler weather and less time in warm conditions.

To tack on to Jake's comments. The can will give coverage guidance so you
can use that as a guide for thickness too.

Re: Stus-List Standing rigging replacement

2014-10-23 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I looked it up, the quick attach fittings are no longer advised for
standing rigging though I can't understand why. And I was wrong they won't
work with rod but WILL work with all other types of wire.

At the time I used them they were marketed as competition to stay-lock.
If I remember correctly they were guaranteed to between 90 and 100% of the
wire rope break strength. I up sized all the wire and pin fittings. IIRC
Break strength of 5000, SWL up to 3500. Tensioned to #1100.

IIRC the fittings also work with dyform or rod.

Having used Suncor for my lifelines where they worked well, I would not
consider them as safe for standing rigging. They are very easy to work
with, but they are not nearly as secure as sta-lok fittings. I don't think
Suncor intends or markets them for high tension shrouds and stays.
