Listers, I'm looking to donate some of my old sails to charity. Each one that I have contacted asks that I provide a written valuation for them which they will sign off on. Does anyone know of a formula or other method for valuing used sails? I'm not looking to cheat the government (though don't get me started) or cause problems for a charity. There has to be a way to come up with a fair value, no? Appreciate any ideas or website links that could start the process. Hailing frequencies open. On screen. All the best, Edd --- Edd M. I'd win this had I kept the storm jib from my prior boat a Vision 6.60 The jib came from a 50s vintage Lightning (original sail) and other than torn up batten pockets the sail was great. Dennis, We are thinking about going over for the Blue Angels show in November too. We will likely go over that Friday though and raft up with the Cruising group from Fairhope Yacht Club. Would love to meet the Admiral and you if we get the chance. Its great to put a face to the name! Just in case you are interested, we are participating in the Double-Handed Race this Saturday, Oct 25, and the goDaddy Bowl Regatta next Saturday, Nov 1. Class winners in the goDaddy historically receive game tickets as well as t-shirts and trophies. Both races are hosted by Fairhope Yacht Club http://fairhopeyachtclub.com/ and run here in Mobile Bay. We usually have some transient space on the t-piers and would love to have you come and visit. Fairhope Visitor's Guide http://www.cofairhope.com/home/showdocument?id=1502 The club is within walking distance of downtown and there is something going on most nights right at the club. You may come to visit us and decide to stay and go over to the show with the group from Fairhope! Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish
Listers, Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior floorboards on the Enterprise. Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish
I did the floors on Paradigm with 3 encapsulation coats of WEST System, followed with5 or 6 coats of Epifanes gloss. They looked great and lasted beautifully. This time around I'd be tempted to use Varathane Semi-gloss solvent-based over the epoxy, it's a much faster build and extremely durable. Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest
I still use the 160% on my boat. I believe folks used a 170% on it as well, back in the early seventies; certainly helps when the wind is below the 12-15 range. I think the phrf penalty got folks to drop down, but in 8-10 the boat certainly needs the bigger sail. When I bought the boat, the smallest sail was a 150% mule; 90% hoist and bulletproof. Was hell to tack in heavy air. Got smart and bought a used 135% and it's great. Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish
Danny So you put Spar Varnish on top of epoxy, I am wondering why? Does it give a better shine or is it more abraison resistant or something else? The polyurethane floor finish that I used on some oak flooring in my home has a lasting shine and stands up to normal indoor/outdoor shoe traffic very well.actually that part is the most heavily travlled flooring in the house I took my old teak and holy cabin sole to bare wood with chemical paint stripper and a scraper followed by a light sanding and solvent wash and applied 1 coat of Sikkens marine cetol and that last 8 years very well and it saw a lot of use. This past season before launch I stripped a few bad spots that had developed near the nav station again with paint stripper, then a light spot sanding, solvent wash and 1 coat of cetol on the bare spots only and then a couple days later solvent washed the entire sole and applied 1 coat of the Sikkens cetol on all of it , this time the same cetol that I used on my cedar home (seems like just about the same stuff as the marine cetol but again 1/3 the cost and besides I had left over from doing my house.I am very pleased.not high gloss, sort of satin finish but all the rest of the teak, and there is quite a lot of teak on a 35MKII is oiled, so the satin finsih on the sole matches the bulkheads and other interior teak quite well, not overly slippery and pretty darn good appearance for a cabin sole that is now 40 years old. Not that much work to do and not that much work to maintain and not much cost either.can't imagine doing 8 coats!!! I started racing Touche' with the 170. Came with a 6 second penalty. Did a 100 mile distance race, 15 miles upwind and then 85 miles under the chute. Using the chute, the 6 seconds was indeed a penalty. Took the 170 off the boat, amended my PHRF cert to 155% max sail and got 6 seconds. Never looked back. Dennis C. Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest
Joe You are describing my exact experience with furling gear.bags of good Sobstad sails, the biggest 162% and a beautiful 135% neither cut for the furler that never see action because I am a lazy sailor.this past season I started with my newest furling Doyle Dacron 135% that had just come from the loft after overhaul and getting a new uv strip and I did my first sail with it on a very windy day so I decided to try my Sobstad furling #3 next time out, which I measured at 120% on the back lawn. It worked quite well and had decent shape but felt more like a worn bed sheet than a crisp Dacron sail.it stayed on the furler all summer long and we used it a lot and had fun but it contributed to 2 upwind poundings I took from a CC 33 MKII in lighter air where my Doyle furling 135 excels.the 33 MKII points real good and may still have outdone us but at least I think it would have been more of a contest.I know the other skipper, he's a very good sailor and he was single handed.I had 1 crew helping each time.not sure if he was using a furling sail but I expect so, he's now a cruiser and not a racer, just like me, but it seems we race each other for about 20 minutes to a half hour every time we get close to each other now.no offwind hookups yet Dwight Veinot CC 35MKII, Alianna Head of St. Margaret's Bay, NS _ From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List Sent: October 23, 2014 12:43 PM To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Re: Stus-List oldest sail contest The 35 MK I was designed for a 170, so the sheet leads are good for that. I think they end up a couple feet forward of the winch. I have a Dacron 170 and a mylar 170. Both are great light air sails, but the mylar one can take more wind before being damaged. I swear the furling gear has totally ruined my sailing work ethic though - it seems SO MUCH trouble to get the furling drum off and use the big sails. I figured that the previous owner (or the original owner) used the transom corner fitting for a turning block location. Stus-List Standing rigging replacement
I was thinking of replacing my standing rigging on my 26. I am thinking I can put it in a box and ship it to wherever so they can duplicate what I have now. I haven't really noticed anything wrong with it other than the threaded end for the turnbuckle on one of my lowers is bent slightly. I am sure everything is original 1977 so it may be a good idea to replace it. I would prefer to not involve cross border if possible but wouldn't rule it out. Did you strip right down to bare wood? If so what method did you use for stripping? Chemical, sanding, scraper? The video on Jamestown distributor says he scrapes and believes that keeping the scraper sharp, maybe 4 passes before resharpening, is the best and cleanest method. I still have the twenty some odd sails identified as 7/71 that came with Corsair. The drifter and the .5 oz spinnaker still go out to the boat every year. Better pics. Seems well maintained. Price depends on how fast you want to sell. $40-80k seems about right. You're really gonna have to capitalize on the CC pedigree if you want to maximize price. There are 5 year old Beneteaus coming back from charter service that are going for $80k. So you have to make an argument for what makes a CC so great and worth it. Having used Suncor for my lifelines where they worked well, I would not consider them as safe for standing rigging. They are very easy to work with, but they are not nearly as secure as sta-lok fittings. I don't think Suncor intends or markets them for high tension shrouds and stays. Re: Stus-List Standing rigging replacement
At the time I used them they were marketed as competition to stay-lock. If I remember correctly they were guaranteed to between 90 and 100% of the wire rope break strength. I up sized all the wire and pin fittings. IIRC Break strength of 5000, SWL up to 3500. Tensioned to #1100. IIRC the fittings also work with dyform or rod. Dan, Which sail maker built your 1970 mainsail? I want to put them on my list of potential sail makers to consider for Calypso’s next new sail. It has a C with the maple leaf in it . I'm guessing that its a bit stretched out and that's why I can't point into the wind as much as I should be able too . Also after this years use ( on the last run home) I noticed the maple leaf starting to tear off . Most hang from the rafters of the Pole Barn. They are hanked on sails and we changed over to roller furling and #6 luff tape. Stus-List Barrier Coating
I'm having my boats bottom soda blasted and then I'm going to be applying a barrier coating. The yard recommended 7 coats of Interlux Interprotect 2000E barrier coat which frankly seems a bit much. According to them, Interlux (who recommends 4-5 coats 10 mil minimum) won't honor their warrantee if you use less. Never short for opinions I'm hoping you folks can provide me some recommendations for barrier coatings. Re: Stus-List Barrier Coating
Are they spraying the barrier coat? You'll get a smoother (faster) finish if they do. Hard to tell exactly how thick each coat is, so a 50% increase is probably good insurance. Just think, you'll probably only have to (want to) do this once so you might as well do it well the first time. My yard also recommended application of the bottom paint while the barrier was not fully cured. Re: Stus-List Barrier Coating
Josh is correct. You will get a better bond with the Interprotect if you apply your bottom paint before the barrier coat has cured. The label says if you can still make a thumb print in the barrier coat, you're good to go. The window for application will vary with temperature. You will have more time in cooler weather and less time in warm conditions. To tack on to Jake's comments. The can will give coverage guidance so you can use that as a guide for thickness too. Re: Stus-List Standing rigging replacement
I looked it up, the quick attach fittings are no longer advised for standing rigging though I can't understand why. And I was wrong they won't work with rod but WILL work with all other types of wire.
