Stus-List boat names

2015-09-22 Thread Bruce via CnC-List
mdeyoung said " I took part in a 1985 Transpac charter of a Barnett 52
named “Climax”. “Climax” was owned by two lady part doctors. I
sailed several Sauza Cups (Lahaina YC, Maui) on a Choate 40 named
“Phoenix” as the owner’s previous boat burned to the waterline
after his spouse over-primed the alcohol stove and the fire got out of
control."

//

We must have crossed paths at some point. I raced on Climax when Mike
Campbell owneb her, before he built the Andrews-70 "Victoria". and I
spent a *bunch* of time on Choate-40s in SoCal, including Spirit (hull
#1), Sixpence (Dennis Choate's boat) and Audacious. Some great names
from that bunch of boats, including "BigWig" (built by an owner who was
tired of losing races to a boat called "Fiver", both of which are names
from the book Watership Down); "Red Shift" (owned by a physicist at JPL,
painted to reflect the "red shift" in the color spectrum as a celestial
object moves away from you)... etc.

My personal favorite boat names, besides the aforementioned FUJIMO, came
from a guy who named his boats from headlines in the Weekly World
News... he had an Olson-30 called "Aliens Ate My Buick", a Schock-35
called "Psycho Betty", etc...

Stus-List boat names

2015-09-22 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
The family names thing reminded me of my dad's motor boats. His
first was "Miss Carriage." My mother had a late in life miscarage
and he figured out the savings through college and got a
boat. Needless to say, the folks at the Buffalo Launch Club were not
impressed. His next boat was conservatively named by the combination
of family member names: "TALTA" (Thomas, Anne, Louise, Thomas,
Anthony). A always thought that was a pretty cool name.

Our Alera, which means Eagle in Latin, was the oroginal name she was
documented with and was changed back. The PO had changed the name to
Summer Breeze (worst name ever IMO) without the proper ceremony. Not
being the type to take chances, we changed it back to Alera and did
the full ceremony anyway.

Stus-List C trademark stripe

2015-09-22 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Thanks all. Tape it is! I will try Holland Marine at Ken's suggestion. I am an
hour north of his store and Peter will even mail it. I should have looked there
to start with, he has a surprising C OEM inventory. A couple of years ago I
was able to source an original holding tank and that's not the only part he
surprised me with.

Stus-List C trademark stripe

2015-09-22 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Len,

I re-did mine a couple years and used a multi-step approach that provided
an "As New" look.

I got the trademark enblems / stars for both ends from Holland Marine in
Toronto. Those are actual originals. (http://www.hollandmarine.com/) they
also have the ready made triple stripe in some colors (Easier to install).
I needed royal blue and they did not have it
I got 2 rolls of royal blue stripes (1/8 width and 1/2" width) from Great
Lakes skipper http://greatlakesskipper.com/ Those are Bayliner stripes and
their backing has built-in 1/8" spacer area / markings
I got the "Stripe eraser" wheel from ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pinstripe-removal-Discs-Astro-400E-Eraser-Inc-Arbor-400E-AR-stripe-glue-set-/351161305017?hash=item51c2d847b9=351161305017=mtr

Once you get the hang of the eraser wheel it takes about 30 minutes to
cleanly remove about 30 feet of stripe.

Next step I installed the Original C Emblems on both ends, then I layed
the bottom stripe following the edge of the sunk-in stripe area
I layed the 1/2" middle stripe by following the spacer markings off the
lower stripe
I layed the top 1/8" stripe by lining-up the spacer backing to the middle
stripe

It sounds more complicated than it is. It turned-out outstanding. I
still get compliments on how straight and "factory" the stripes look.

I would highly recommend removing
the old tape. Just make sure to measure and mark when it goes
with a grease pencil before removing the original. I measured
the distance to the underside of the hull/deck joint every
couple of feet.  3M has a special stripe removal wheel for about
$40 that you spin with a drill and it removes the tape and
residue without harming the underlying gelcoat or paint. Ask at
a body shop supply and they will fix you right up.

Stus-List Re; Boat names

2015-09-22 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
My first boat, C 30MKI was named Trysail. The previous owner sold Flying
Scotts (I think) at one time so it was a play on words. She still carries
that name.

My new boat, C 30 MKII, was named Lagniappe when I purchased her. Talk
about a mouth full and a triple repeat on the spelling when calling a
bridge, marina, or vessel. After the delivery trip North from Annapolis to
Mystic I changed the name. I got tired of repeating myself. Didn't like
the name myself, but anyone from New Orleans seemed to love it, reminded
them of home.

So I renamed my current boat HANUMAN. Seems simple enough and I'm still
amused that most folks can't pronounce it, nor spell it. HA NEW MAN.

Hanuman is a very prevalent character in the Ramayana and his picture is
probably hanging on the wall in every Indian restaurant in the world.
Millions of kids watch him in cartoons. He's carved into every early
Buddhist/Hindu temple across Asia. I just happen to be on the wrong side
of the world now and I guess I spent to much time in Asia.

Oddly enough, Hanuman is also the namesake of one of the J Class yachts.
The owner has spinnaker graphics similar to the tattoo on my leg. :)
Fortunately, I had the tattoo longer so I can say he stole my idea..lol
It's the Khmer version of Hanuman carved into the the temples of Cambodia,
Laos, Thailand and Burma/Myanmar.

Anyway, the Ramayana is one of those books everyone should read, or at
least try to, once in their life.

I hope I didn't put anyone to sleep with this tale

Stus-List C trademark stripe.

2015-09-22 Thread Janko Puls via CnC-List
Ahoy,

For the trademark strip I used 1/2' tape in seagreen. At the ever friendly and
helpful and affordable http://www.hollandmarine.com in Canada you will be able
to purchase the stars and pointed tips as well, and in different colors - but
if I remember right their decal supplies are limited. Anyway a great address
for C owners.

cheers

Re: Stus-List C trademark stripe.

2015-09-22 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Just had to add the real benefit of using tape instead of paint? Paint requires
a good weather window during and for several drying hours after, plus a light
sanding and a second coat. Tape is easier to apply and once you're done, you
are done, no cleanup and it can rain on it right away.

I would highly recommend removing the old tape. Just make sure to measure and
mark when it goes with a grease pencil before removing the original. I measured
the distance to the underside of the hull/deck joint every couple of feet. 3M
has a special stripe removal wheel for about $40 that you spin with a drill and
it removes the tape and residue without harming the underlying gelcoat or
paint. Ask at a body shop supply and they will fix you right up.

Re: Stus-List C 30 main halyard size

2015-09-22 Thread Jeffrey Nelson via CnC-List
You can have your disagreement. It's too late for me I have my wire
rope halyards.
They were half the price of what I was quoted in two separate shops for
all rope. I agree, I probably wouldn't have had to replace the
sheeves at the mast head. However, if I were going to do it, I think I
would because the cost of a new improved sheeve would
be significantly less than the price of the halyards. If there were any
nicks or abraiding points in the old sheeve from the wire halyard
going over it the investment would be well paid for in the price of a
new halyard.

Perhaps U.S. vs Canada availabiliity makes up the difference. I went
local and I'm happy with the results.

Jeffrey,

Not sure I agree with your conclusions. 7x19 SS wire isn’t what I
would call cheap, plus you would pay for a rigger to do a wire to rope
splice plus an eye splice. A hybrid high tech line like New Englands
“VPC” is much less expensive ($1.79/ft for 7/16” at defender) and it
only would need an eye splice at one end. As for replacing the
sheeves, may of us on the list have had no problems running all-rope
halyards over the original sheeves.

Last year, I was thinking of replacing my halyard with all rope

I decided to replace with wire rope. I wasn't that keen in replacing
the sheeve at the masthead, and my rigger successfully argued that
the wire rope halyard had served it's purpose well for the last 30
years...(not sure if was original) so why not replace it with the same.
That statement probably cost him a fair bit of profit as all rope

recommendation is to change it to a GFCI outlet as per ABYC standards. Is it
enough to change just the one receptacle and if so what is the difference
between a hardware store "weather proof" or a marine equivalent. A search of
the web has brought me nothing definitive although it is possible the marine
variety is tinned and able to accommodate stranded wire vs solid wire like
would be used in a home.

Bad thing is we don't even have access to shore power on our lake...but
standards are standards where insurance is concerned.

Thanks

Re: Stus-List Re; Boat names

2015-09-22 Thread William Hall via CnC-List
My previous boat was named Sweet Dream when I got her. I didn't care for
the name but never changed it. My crew wanted to name the dinghy Wet
Dream, and occasionally used that call sign on VHF 13.
My "new" boat, Starfire, was named by the original owner around 1985. I
suspect it was named after a comic strip with a scantily clad heroine from
the time, but the owner who named it wouldn't admit that.

Re: Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-22 Thread Tim Sippel via CnC-List
Hi Al,
This may be a bit late , but a few years I replaced all my interior cushions
(actually 10 years ago) .
I took photos of every cushion on the boat and put them in a word document
along with the measurements for each cushion .
I sent the document to every upholsterer I could find with an e-mail address,
marine automotive, furniture etc.
Got a response from a upholsterer specializing restaurant furniture (?) he was
thousands less than any marine outfit. The upholsterer also had good prices on
Ultraleather (and a few competitor products)
They suggested I use mesh on the backs of cushions (like on outdoor lawn
furniture) to save some money and allow better breathing , they still look
great.
The interesting thing for you Toronto area readers , the guy is in Kitchener
... a few blocks from where I was living.

I have a 1981 C & C '34 with original cushions. I recently got an estimate from
a local marine canvas shop for replacement of all the fabric (retaining the
original foam) using the lowest cost sunbrella material. I was surprised to see
it was over $4000 for the job, and over $6000 to replace the foam as well.

I would appreciate any suggestions for alternative ways to go on upgrading the
interior upholstery.

Thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend removing the old tape. Just make sure to
measure and mark when it goes with a grease pencil before removing the
original. I measured the distance to the underside of the hull/deck
joint every couple of feet. 3M has a special stripe removal wheel for
about $40 that you spin with a drill and it removes the tape and residue
without harming the underlying gelcoat or paint. Ask at a body shop
supply and they will fix you right up.

Re: Stus-List Boat Names

2015-09-22 Thread Ed Dooley via CnC-List
It took us 4 years to rename our boat. We bought it in Lake George and hauled
it to her new home on Lake Champlain and
the 1st thing I did was peel off the vinyl lettering of her old name, Jack
Rabbit. The former owner also applied a giant,
two actually, one on each side of the hull, near the stern, vinyl cartoon
character of a Jack rabbit. Pretty ugly. I'm an Irish citizen,
so I wanted something Irish, but then a friend said she'd hate to see me call
the Coast Guard in an emergency and try to get them to understand
the name of the boat in Irish. For example, if I named the boat "Seaworthy" in
Irish, the call would go like this; "May Day, May Day,
this is Muiracmhainneach!" "Say again, sir? Could you spell that?" As I'm
sinking I'm teaching Irish to the Coast Guard.
My partner never sailed before meeting me, and as we heeled over she'd hit the
deck and scream, so keeping true to my Irish roots I thought I'd name
the boat "Screaming Banshee" (in English), an Irish fairy maiden, who,
unfortunately, foreshadows doom. "Come on aboard, oh, don't worry, this sail
isn't doomed, really, it's just a name." But as cruisers, I didn't want to be
plodding along and have another cruiser fly past us with us sporting
"Screaming" in our name.
So, long story short, we named her Banshee (in a Celtic script, of course!).

The 'cove strip' on our boat is a blue tape.was there when we bought
the boat 10 years ago..not sure when it was actually
applied.looks as good now as it did in 2006. Not certain but I
think the PO got it from an automotive store.

Point being, tape will work just fine if it is a quality product.

Who is your rigger?

I can see that if wire rope is cheaper than a spectra cored line it would be a
fine solution. However if not then a spectra cored halyard with just spectra
core where you currently have wire would likely work very well in existing shiv
and be just as strong or stronger than the wire.

However, after a fairly lengthy discussion with sailmaker and rigger,

sheeve at the masthead, and my rigger successfully argued that
the wire rope halyard had served it's purpose well for the last 30 years...(not

Not sure I agree with your conclusions. 7x19 SS wire isn’t what I would

expensive ($1.79/ft for 7/16” at defender) and it only would need an eye splice

I would highly recommend removing
the old tape. Just make sure to measure and mark when it goes
with a grease pencil before removing the original. I measured
the distance to the underside of the hull/deck joint every
couple of feet. 3M has a special stripe removal wheel for about
$40 that you spin with a drill and it removes the tape and
residue without harming the underlying gelcoat or paint. Ask at
a body shop supply and they will fix you right up.

2015-09-22 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List

Not sure how many Good Old Boat subcribers are on the list but in the last
issue someone had redone the C cove strip with a reflective tape. Probably
not for every color scheme but I thought it would be very good at night if
someone was to shine a light towards the boat. I am considering it since I am
in a mooring field and the power boaters on the lake seem to come too close
most of the time.

Re: Stus-List C trademark stripe

2015-09-22 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
We used tape about 5 years ago on my C 30 stripe, but painted the star.
Some edge chipping and wear but still OK.

I found a reflective tape at an auto supplier, can't remember which one, that
ended up being the correct width. By day it is solid red, at night it reflects
red
and silver in alternate bands.

After the clean up of the cove it was an easy job with three people. One person
held the roll at the right height and tension, a second person peeled the
backing
off as we went along and guided the tape, the third person firmly pressed it in.
Doubt it took 5 minutes a side.

We finished the tips with an X-acto knife.
