Frank : where are you located . The only thing that I recommend is Aqua buff
1000 and 2000 it will make the boat shine like it was brand new . Once you get
the technique down then it's really easy . Lots of water and a high speed
buffer with a wool pad . If you are in the Toronto area I can certainly show
you how to buff it .

2016-07-20 Thread Mark McMenamy via CnC-List
Hi Frank,

I just did my boat with Aurora Marine Boat Shine. It worked very well.
There's a two part wash, then you buff the hull with a product called EZ Buff,
and then give it two coats of Boat Shine which applies and is removed like a
traditional wax. I was really amazed how my C 25 shined up. It was a lot
of work, but she looks great and according to Aurora, the shine should last up
to a year.time will tell.

Stus-List Disassemble a Barient 22 Winch

Dennis:

Correct, mine is the Barient 22 New B Model.

You just reminded me of how I took these apart some years back..I
did place wooded wedges between the drum base and deck to keep it in
place. Will do it again, maybe tomorrow.

Thank you and thank everyone else.

Assuming a strap wrench and other methods fail, two more suggestions.

1. Secure a line to a cleat. Wrap it around the winch several
times. Take it to another winch and tighten to hold the first winch
from turning.

2. Drive several wooden or plastic wedges between drum skirt and deck.

On reassembly, coat the threads with Tefgel so it comes apart easily

Re: Stus-List Keel bulge around near keel bolt

2016-07-20 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Gene,

This is certainly an unusual problem, at least for this list. I can think of
two things that might cause the bulge, water intrusion or rust. This may be a
combination of the two. There is certainly something going on around the keel
bolt. Drilling into the cavity may reveal the cause. In any case, holes are
easy to fill. Time for some exploratory surgery.

Subject: Stus-List Keel bulge around near keel bolt

Hi There,

I'm looking to get some opinions on how to treat some bulging around one of my
keel bolts. It is symmetrical and I believe it is from a small amount of water
intrusion around the bolt and then freezing during the winter. The
recommendation from the marina was to drill holes into the bulge and drain and
then fill with epoxy and hammer it in so that it drives deep into the gaps. And
then remove the keel nuts in the bilge and epoxy around the bolt base to fill
any gaps and prevent further intrusion.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do and was it effective?

Thanks,

There is still some magic in these old boats. Windburn took first in class,

Recommend not to pinch, the boat seems to want to be free. Also, you should
have inboard genoa tracks to help pointing, but need to sheet the genoa
outboard for reaching. My tracks are about four feet aft of the shrouds, in
line with them and are six feet long? I have adjustable cars (Garhauer) but use
a snatch block on the rail when reaching. I set the rig tension on the medium
to loose side, but race in mostly light air. Selection is a 155, 140, 110 ? all
Dacron (had high tech but when they fail?they fail big and my budget didn?t fit
getting new ones every four years).

Re: Stus-List Relocating the Yanmar key now alternator..

2016-07-20 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
If your alternator is not working then you should simple get an alternator
buzzer alarm.

This assumes your alternator alarm is working. When you turn your key on to
provide power before actually cranking the engine the engine, you should hear
the buzzer and see possible two lights on. If you don’t have lights, you can
disconnect the wire on the engine oil pressure switch. The pressure switch
provide alarm ground when there is no(or low) pressure. Unplug this wire and
keep it from grounding against the engine block and turn the key on, if you get
a buzzer then the alternator alarm is working.

Some of the confusion regarding killing or not killing an alternator may likely
stems to the the type of alternator and how it’s connected. Most Yanmars come
with internally regulated Hitachi alternators. Maine Sail called these
alternators “ dumber than a pound of beetle poop”.

My old C 29 had the standard 35A Hitachi. The key switch would only provide
12V power to a line through an alternator alarm buzzer then to the alternators
“lamp” connection. When the alternator was not spinning, the “lamp” connection
provided the ground for the buzzer to alarm. When the alternator was spinning
and working, it provided 14V at the “Lamp” connector and since it was also
providing 14V to the battery, the alarm buzzer saw 14V before and after (i.e.
zero volt difference) and stopped buzzing. The alternator also had a
connection (top of T-connector) for the battery sensing used by the internal
regulator. In this case, the sense was connected via a short loop to the
battery connection. So for this arrangement, I would guess that shutting off
the key switch would not harm the alternator. And I know from experience this
to be the case.

I have heard that some old internal regulated alternators do not have a sense
connection but rather likely use the lamp connection for sensing. Or maybe
even some sense connections are connected to the a key powered switch. In
these cases, I could see how an alternator could be harmed by a sudden
disconnect of the sense voltage.

Re: Stus-List Relocating the Yanmar key now alternator..

2016-07-20 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
It is hard to say for sure what your regulator is going to control voltage
at and without know what type of batteries you have it is hard to know what
voltage it should be. Normal car alternators control at about 14.4v. A
lead-acid battery is considered to be fully charged when the resting
voltage is at 12.7v... But that is after it has set for a while or once the
the "overcharge" has been removed.

You most likely did no damage if the alternator is still putting out a
charge and 13.5v is definitely a charge.

Stus-List Keel bulge around near keel bolt

2016-07-20 Thread Eugene Fodor via CnC-List
Hi There,

I'm looking to get some opinions on how to treat some bulging around one of
my keel bolts. It is symmetrical and I believe it is from a small amount of
water intrusion around the bolt and then freezing during the winter. The
recommendation from the marina was to drill holes into the bulge and drain
and then fill with epoxy and hammer it in so that it drives deep into the
gaps. And then remove the keel nuts in the bilge and epoxy around the bolt
base to fill any gaps and prevent further intrusion.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do and was it effective?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have been PHRF racing at our local club, this is my first year with a C 30
MK1 (1979) is there a thread or anyone have comments on getting the best out of
the boat, eg tight rigging, rake, sail selection, strength or weaknesses
specific to the 30 to stay competitive? I have been sailing for a couple
decades so not looking for general sailing tips. I want to know what is best
for the 30MK1 or hear from your experience what work best.

I am pointing well, though wounder if I should pinch more or be more off the
wind for speed? I seemed to be passed on reaching and running.

FYI - we have about half a dozen 30 MK1 racing a couple redwings, a 32 and 35
MK1 racing. All C
