Re: Stus-List Toe rail leak

2017-10-04 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
Good enough for me, will give it a try in the spring.

Windburn is pretty dry, not much gets in from rain or spray.
A very little gets in on the port side midship with the rail buried
for a while, wipes up with a cloth. I shouldn't be bothered but
so close to being completely dry ...

All I know is that I, and others, have seen leaks decrease or stop after
applying Captain Tolley's to the inboard edge of the toe rail.  It may just
be that the stuff is so watery that it finds it's way under the rail,
possibly sneaks around the fasteners and works its magic.  Whether it finds
its way to the rub rail I can't say.  :)

FWIW, I don’t have a rub rail like either of the models shown on the South

Not the way I use it. I just use it to stop water intrusion between the

Stus-List Irma 1 : Ox <1

2017-10-04 Thread bobmor99 . via CnC-List
Ol' Ox was on a mooring ball in St Augustine, FL when Hurricane Irma passed
through. I should've had out more scope and better chafing protection.
Ox broke free and was eventually pounded under some floating docks.
The salvage folks put a sling under the gooseneck and after 20 minutes of
serious horsepower, pulled Ox free and and dragged the remains along the
bottom the their barge/crane for lifting the next day.
After lifting and a pump out, the bottom of the hole in the transom was
about 9-12 inches above the waterline.
I was impressed by the strength of the standing rigging. No rod heads
"popped" on the (perhaps) original standing rigging.
I put the boat on craigslist as a freebie, salvaged what I could, and
removed as much weight as possible.
Among the now-functional salvaged equipment are a Honda 2000 generator, a
CPT autopilot (great factory support), an Engel 12V refigerator, a couple
of Northstar AGM batteries, and a Caframo fan. I put all of these items in
fresh water asap and sprayed a lot of WD-40.
These tried-and-true components will likely find their way to my next (and
final) boat.
Looking at a C 40 centerboard but that's another topic.

Tom,

Grenada is on the southern end of the hurricane belt, and other than some surge
and rain Irma and Maria left it and most of the Grenadines untouched.

There is a huge effort amongst the residents and sailors to get aid to Dominica
and other affected islands

Re: Stus-List Charter from Grenada

2017-10-04 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
Grenada is lovely. If you are up for longer passages, you can also sail
north to Dominica, Martinique, etc., all the way to Antigua, and back.
That's assuming the rules of your charter allow it. The French islands are
the best, imagine France in the Caribbean. Real coffee, good wine, and all
other goodies ... yeah, one goes for the sailing, but I like my cup of
coffee, too :)

Where will you charter in Grenada? I sailed on deliveries between the
islands, so I never chartered. Any recommendations for charter companies?
Grenada is a great option for this season after the charter fleet was hit
so badly in the VIs and other places. :(

You can fly directly to Grenada. Airfare was very cheap from/to the
Northeast US last season (except right before or after major regattas).

Make sure you have the Imray charts for the Caribbean. You can buy them in
Island Water World on the islands, if not before.

Oh my, trade winds! Just thinking of them makes me restless. Anyone needs
crew for the Caribbean? I'll work for food. :))

Agree St. Vincent can be skipped. Kingstown is ok, but up the northeast side
e.g. Wallilabou and farther north it gets sketchy. All the other islands are
generally safe, but lock your companionway when ashore on Mayreau from
Saltwhistle Bay.

Cheers,

I guess our cold, snow and freezing weather doesn't sound so bad now.

Good luck.  I still remember the Texas Agriculture Secretary putting his
arm in a Fire Ant hive to show that they really aren't such a problem.
He quickly withdrew his arm wiping ants off and wincing in pain.  I
still don't remember if he went to the hospital.

Touche's slip in Mandeville, LA is a fixed pier.  It has been
submerged for a couple days now from that system that was around
northeastern Florida last week.  Strong easterly winds for days pushes
water into Lake Pontchartrain through The Rigolets.  My dock box
probably has several inches of water in it.  I keep everything in tubs
so unless the water gets 2 feet or so over the dock, everything is
OK.  Pain in the butt to go pull everything out, mop it out and let it
dry.  I usually set up a folding chair and drink a beer or two.

The other issue is the mud on the dock.  If one of the boat owners
doesn't get down there while the mud is still wet and hose it off,
it's a pain in the butt to wash the dock boards after the mud dries.

Anyway, Touche' is still in Pensacola on a floating pier. If I go over
to do storm prep (remove sails and canvas), I may have to stop by
Mandeville and wade through the marina to get storm dock lines out of
my dock box.  Always fun with the snakes, fire ants and gators.  :(

Re: Stus-List Charter from Grenada

Yes. It's lovely. A bit more challenging than the VI, but well worth it.
Grenada itself is really worthwhile, too. There are a bunch of articles on
Grenada by Don Street on the Cruising world web site that may help.
Definitely spend as little time as possible in St Vincent. Get there the
day you fly out, if you can. A good old friend lives is a native of Bequia
and big into promoting sailing there. You would probably enjoy meeting him
and some of the kids he's coaching. I'll put you in touch should you head
down.

Not the way I use it. I just use it to stop water intrusion between the

Re: Stus-List Charter from Grenada

2017-10-04 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Yes. I have chartered in the Grenadines twice, basing from St. Vincent (as
opposed to Grenada). It’s probably my favorite place in the world. The
islands are unspoiled and charming. The scenery is beautiful; the snorkeling
spectacular. The islands are laid out basically north/south, and the winds are
basically easterly, so most passages are reaches. And the passages are
generally short - a half-day at most. Navigation is generally line-of-sight,
but there are some submerged hazards here and there. Make sure to have the
right charts and get a briefing. The sailing is spectacular, especially if
you’re there during the “Christmas Winds”. Be sure to anchor at the Tobago
Cays, and at Saltwhistle Bay, Mayreau. And be sure to visit Bequia. It’s
partly because of those charters that I named my boat Grenadine (the other part
is that she’s red, as is the Grenadine syrup with which I make rum punch :)

Cheers,

Stus-List Another danged storm

2017-10-04 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Looks like TD16 will become a Cat 1 huricane before it makes landfall on
the Florida Panhandle then heads towards the Chesapeake. This is getting
annoying.

Touche's slip in Mandeville, LA is a fixed pier. It has been submerged for
a couple days now from that system that was around northeastern Florida
last week. Strong easterly winds for days pushes water into Lake
Pontchartrain through The Rigolets. My dock box probably has several
inches of water in it. I keep everything in tubs so unless the water gets
2 feet or so over the dock, everything is OK. Pain in the butt to go pull
everything out, mop it out and let it dry. I usually set up a folding
chair and drink a beer or two.

The other issue is the mud on the dock. If one of the boat owners doesn't
get down there while the mud is still wet and hose it off, it's a pain in
the butt to wash the dock boards after the mud dries.

Anyway, Touche' is still in Pensacola on a floating pier. If I go over to
do storm prep (remove sails and canvas), I may have to stop by Mandeville
and wade through the marina to get storm dock lines out of my dock box.
Always fun with the snakes, fire ants and gators. :(

I have done the same thing with Captain Tolley's liquid
sealant both on the toe rail(s) and I also do it on the wooden
hand rails on the coach roof. When I did the handrails for the
first few times, the liquid would run under them and
disappear.after a few applications, the liquid must have
filled all the cavities as it would begin to run down the side

I used less than a bottle to go around my 37.
I think it depends on how much butyl sealant is left in there / how many
voids there are. Where there's a gap, it'll keep flowing in. On my toe
rails, it went in only a little before pooling at the edge of the toe rail.

Re: Stus-List Toe rail leak

2017-10-04 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
I had to straighten a bit of my toe rail. I took it off to do so. 15 feet (one
length) came off – about 55 bolts. Couldn’t get to some easily, should have
removed the shelf in the vee berth area. A bear…. Two people about 5 hours.

But, two long strips of butyl, each bolt head coated with butyl (paint thinner
takes that stuff off nicely) and careful tightening and another five or so
hours with two people….

Not fun.

Good luck with any 'spot' repairs.

The yard just fixed a collision based leak of longstanding on my starboard bow
quarter hull-deck joint and had to remove the bolts back to about mid-ship to
get enough separation to reach the joint. This was about 6-8 times the

length of the leaking portion of the joint. On my boat, the toe rail is held on
by the same bolts that hold the deck onto the hull.

Of course if its just the toe-rail (unlikely IMHO), removal doesn't require
getting to and fixing any leaks at the hull-deck joint--but the bolts have to
come off/be loosened either way.

If the rail was laid up with butyl, you may be able to squeeze it down by
tightening only--but you must not allow the bolt to turn, only the nut, since
the butyl seal depends on even pressure and turning

the bolt may cause the butyl to separate.

In any case, you are looking at a 2 person job of many hours, assuming the nuts
are all accessible without dismantling part of the inside of the cabin.

Also remember if you replace the butyl, tighten it up at least twice with a day
or so between to allow the butyl to well set during the 2nd tightening. As the
butyl 'oozes' out of the joint with pressure, the joint may become

physically loose again or at least it will not be as tight as it was after the
first tightening.

Re: Stus-List Toe rail leak

Not having use Captain Tolley’s, how do you get it to flow under the toe rail?

I have done the same thing with Captain Tolley's liquid sealant both on the toe
rail(s) and I also do it on the wooden hand rails on the coach roof. When I
did the handrails for the first few times, the liquid would run under them and
disappear.after a few applications, the liquid must have filled all the
cavities as it would begin to run down the side of coach roof indicating it
could not take any more.and no leaks since with minimal effort.

Now each year or two I simply run several beads of Captain Tolley's Creeping
Crack Cure down the toe rail / deck interface. Cures fairly quickly. Run a
bead, drink a beer. Repeat as necessary.

Haven't seen any significant leaks since I've been doing it. Been several
years now since I adopted this practice.

and try to get in there as much B-tape as possible and then tighten. Any other
thoughts or suggestions?
