I think the idea of a pre-scheduled zoom rendezvous is great. It is a chance
to actually put faces on names and not have to worry about catching the virus
or getting out of your pajamas to attend.

Zoom is relatively inexpensive. You can get a free plan for 40 minutes – not
time for much to happen. The pricing plan is a little hard to understand (is
it $20 or $2000). I’ll see if I can get some clarification.

Anybody have other ideas of conference calling programs – Facebook Rooms,
Skype, etc. Ideas for hosting – meet and greet, specific topics from a
knowledgeable person, or other ideas?

Let me know and I’ll see what I can put together.

Stu

Bob,

While I am not in the mid-Atlantic, I agree that any 2020 rendezvous should be
cancelled.

I?m all for a Zoom-C&C Online Rendezvous. I?d say that we?d have to make sure
that David Risch covers his webcam, but he probably won?t show anyway.

  Last year, I
volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020 Mid-Atlantic C&C Rendezvous
in Baltimore MD in late-September.  We recently returned from the
relative safety of the Bahamas to a raging pandemic in the United States
and it is far from being over, even though Maryland has done quite well
in
controlling the virus.  I am in my seventies and catching COVID-19
could mean much more to me than simply being sick for several weeks—it
  could be a death blow.

  Consequently, I am
withdrawing as a host for the upcoming rendezvous and I will not be
attending one being held elsewhere.  I strongly encourage that this
year's rendezvous be cancelled but that is up to everyone else on this
list who lives in the Mid-Atlantic area.  In my opinion, a weekend
get together (even with friendly C&C owners) is simply not worth the
  risk of catching COVID-19.

  So, I am throwing out
the question to other possible attendees, should this year’s rendezvous
be
cancelled?  And, if not, who is willing to host it and
  where?

As I recall I was able to successfully eliminate the squeal by removing the

 Hi all -

The two Barient 27 primary winches on the Safari were in sorry shape,
so last week I decided to service them. After a rather protracted battle I
was able to disassemble and clean/oil/grease one of them to my
satisfaction, however - when reassembling the first winch I realized that,
while definitely smoother internal operations, it still squeaks!

I think I've traced it to the line lifter rubbing on the clamp ring
 (see manual here
 ).
I didn't think I needed to remove the line lifter originally, but after
tracing the squeak there I wasn't able to unscrew it (the manual says to
tap it with a soft hammer - hitting it rather hard with a soft hammer
 didn't help either).

Does anyone else have these winches on their boat? Anybody else had
 this problem?

Subject: Stus-List 2020 C&C Rendezvous: Cancel due to COVID-19?

Last year, I volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020
Mid-Atlantic C&C Rendezvous in Baltimore MD in late-September.
We recently returned from the relative safety of the Bahamas to a
raging pandemic in the United States and it is far from being
over, even though Maryland has done quite well in controlling the
virus.  I am in my seventies and catching COVID-19 could mean
much more to me than simply being sick for several weeks—it could
be a death blow.

Consequently, I am withdrawing as a host for the upcoming
rendezvous and I will not be attending one being held elsewhere.
I strongly encourage that this year's rendezvous be cancelled but
that is up to everyone else on this list who lives in the
Mid-Atlantic area.  In my opinion, a weekend get together (even
with friendly C&C owners) is simply not worth the risk of
catching COVID-19.

So, I am throwing out the question to other possible attendees,
should this year’s rendezvous be cancelled?  And, if not, who is
willing to host it and where?

Subject: Stus-List 2020 C&C Rendezvous: Cancel due to COVID-19?

Last year, I volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020 Mid-Atlantic C&C
Rendezvous in Baltimore MD in late-September. We recently returned from the
relative safety of the Bahamas to a raging pandemic in the United States and it
is far from being over, even though Maryland has done quite well in controlling
the virus. I am in my seventies and catching COVID-19 could mean much more to
me than simply being sick for several weeks—it could be a death blow.

Consequently, I am withdrawing as a host for the upcoming rendezvous and I will
not be attending one being held elsewhere. I strongly encourage that this
year's rendezvous be cancelled but that is up to everyone else on this list who
lives in the Mid-Atlantic area. In my opinion, a weekend get together (even
with friendly C&C owners) is simply not worth the risk of catching COVID-19.

So, I am throwing out the question to other possible attendees, should this
year’s rendezvous be cancelled? And, if not, who is willing to host it and
where?

I have a Zoom pro account that can host up to 100
participants that we can use if you like. The

While I am not in the mid-Atlantic, I agree that
any 2020 rendezvous should be cancelled.

I?m all for a Zoom-C&C Online Rendezvous. I?d

Stu,

It is $20 a month for a meeting that can accommodate up 100 participants for up
to 24 h. You would have to make sure that you cancel before they charge you for
the following month.

Google Meetings (what used to be Hangouts) should be available at no extra cost.

Let me know and I’ll see what I can put together.

time for much to happen.

Re: Stus-List Jumping the start battery in ACR environment

2020-07-14 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
A full and idle state of charge is indicated by a voltage of 12.7.
Anything higher is either an indication of a charge being applied or the
phenomenon referred to as surface charge. Generally a "dead" battery will
read 10.5v or less. You should typically avoid discharging below 11.6 for
the most number of years of service. I don't know what voltage the Li-ion
battery packs read under no load but it has to be greater than 12.7v.
However, the no load voltage is irrelevant since it actually only
represents how much potential is present. Once attached to a "dead"
battery the output of the jump pack will equal the terminal voltage of the
dead battery. The terminal voltage will begin to rise as the starting
battery is charged if by some strange condition you were able to supply so
much more voltage than the battery could accept then the terminal voltage
would be higher than the state of charge and if it was enough higher could
theoretically reach the ACR voltage of 13.6. This seems unlikely and would
absolutely necessitate and no load voltage much higher than 12.7. Old
style jump packs with lead acid batteries or simply jumping a car with a
spare battery only has the potential to start at 12.7 on the full battery
~10.5 on the dead the potential will eventually equalize between the two
and assuming the same capacity you would end with 2 batteries at roughly
11.6 (I've over simplified it but for the purpose of discussion I think the
example works).

In short, I agree with the previous listers that getting the terminal
voltage to reach 13.6v and having the ACR engage would be unlikely at
best. And that assumes that your ACR senses the start battery and not the
house batt. If your alternator is applied to the house then there is no
question the ACR should sense the house. However it *MIGHT* also sense the
start.

Last year, I volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020 Mid-Atlantic C&C

relative safety of the Bahamas to a raging pandemic in the United States and it
is far from being over, even though Maryland has done quite well in controlling

me than simply being sick for several weeks—it could be a death blow.

And, if not, who is willing to host it and
where?

Re: Stus-List Jumping the start battery in ACR environment

2020-07-14 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
If your boat is wired correctly, your ACR should allow charging the start
battery when the house side has high enough voltage (not the other way round).
So, the presence of higher voltage on the start side, should not open the ACR.

Btw. If you connect on the house side, your portable battery will be charging
your (large, and discharged) house bank, before being able to open the ACR to
allow the charge to the start battery and the starter.

However, my boat has an ACR which, as I understand it, works to keep the

A friend had to jump start his grand banks a couple springs ago, there were as
I recall four 6 volt Golf cart batteries. I was a little worried about just
your question, but it just cranked right up, cold.

So, probably not a concern.

BTW, I discovered that you don’t want to let those go dead too many times. I
left my GB70 NOCO on the boat a couple winters, and after this last one I
could not resuscitate it. Made me very sad, and with all the extras on them,
that you just can’t put a new LiPo into it, got to buy another.

I will be more careful next time.

Hi Charlie

The ACR activates on voltage, so unless your jump pack is higher than
13v it won't combine the banks.  I seriously doubt it, but you could
test it: with charging sources off and the switch in the "normal"
position, verify that the ACR isn't active (there is an output on it
that you can connect to an indicator LED, check for voltage there, no
volts = inactive).  Hook the jump pack to the start battery, wait a few
minutes, and re-check the output for the LED.

2020-07-14 Thread Andrew Means via CnC-List
If the physical rendezvous is canceled, could this be an opportunity for a
world-wide (virtual) rendezvous? People could sign up to give scheduled
presentations/talks, we could have open video chat rooms for people to
join, etc.. It could end up being just as edifying (albeit different) an
experience and a way to bring the community together in a way that would
never be physically possible.

Josh I thought that was the issue as well (and the screws have definitely
rubbed at some point in the past) but after adjusting the screws to make
sure they weren't rubbing I still hear the squeak.

Stus-List 2020 C&C Rendezvous: Cancel due to COVID-19?

2020-07-14 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List

And, if not, who is willing to host it and
where?

The screws that hold the spring tension on the line lifter are too tight
and are rubbing on the bronze spindle below. A series of small washers or
grinding of the screws short will most likely fix the problem.

Hi all -

The two Barient 27 primary winches on the Safari were in sorry
shape, so last week I decided to service them. After a rather
protracted battle I was able to disassemble and
clean/oil/grease one of them to my satisfaction, however -
when reassembling the first winch I realized that, while
definitely smoother internal operations, it still squeaks!

I think I've traced it to the line lifter rubbing on the clamp
ring (see manual here

).
I didn't think I needed to remove the line lifter originally,
but after tracing the squeak there I wasn't able to unscrew it
(the manual says to tap it with a soft hammer - hitting it
rather hard with a soft hammer didn't help either).

Does anyone else have these winches on their boat? Anybody
else had this problem?

Andrew

My 27s are original Barient.

My boat is a 1976 42 Custom (only six made, mine being the last one). I raced
against it when I was kid. The original Baltic 42 was a sistership.
Impressive looking boat.

Subject: Stus-List Barient 27 winch servicing - still squeaks!

Hi all -

The two Barient 27 primary winches on the Safari were in sorry shape, so last
week I decided to service them. After a rather protracted battle I was able to
disassemble and clean/oil/grease one of them to my satisfaction, however - when
reassembling the first winch I realized that, while definitely smoother
internal operations, it still squeaks!

I think I've traced it to the line lifter rubbing on the clamp ring (see manual
here

). I didn't think I needed to remove the line lifter originally, but after
tracing the squeak there I wasn't able to unscrew it (the manual says to tap it
with a soft hammer - hitting it rather hard with a soft hammer didn't help
either).

Does anyone else have these winches on their boat? Anybody else had this
problem?

Andrew

I think the Barient 27s are measured somehow differently than Lewmar;
they're roughly equivalent to a Lewmar 40, size-wise. What size boat do you
have? Anybody have a good size comparison tool across winch brands?

Sadly, it has been too long for me to remember what we did. I serviced all the
winches on my boat several years ago – okay, everybody, you can chastise me
now. I chuckled when I read that your boat uses size 27 for your primaries. I
use mine for my spin pole topping lift.

I use Rigging Only (in MA) for lifelines, sheets, halyards, and the like. They
will know what size you need for the pelican hook.

might not be large enough to accommodate a traditional pelican hook - do you
know offhand if they are? I suppose I could probably check on my boat next time
I'm there : )

Cut off the horizontal tube where you want and install Sea Dog SD270500

the cap on the picture you linked to. From there, you can build a wire with
pelican hooks on each end. Done.

If you want to save a few bucks, swage a thimble eye on one end instead of a
pelican hook.

Stus-List Stanchion size

2020-07-14 Thread Glen Eddie via CnC-List
Does anyone know the stanchion diameter for the C&C Mk 1. I need to get some
replacement eyes. It is either 7/8 or 1inch but I am not at my boat to measure.
