Re: Stus-List Multiple C

2020-07-15 Thread Rob Hamlin via CnC-List
Being 36 the C 37+ is the 4th boat I have owned (Ranger 26, 33 and O’Day 34
Modified). I was fortunate to catch the sailing bug as a teenager racing with
my parents (always had power boats) neighbor on a Ranger 23.

Racing became part of my summers, and once you get known as a young kid that
wants to race many skippers come calling.

If I didn’t have this opportunity my interest and passion for sailing would not
be part of who I am.

Fast forward 20 years, I still race, but have a young family (4 and 5) and we
are now able to cruise and enjoy a whole new adventure with a great boat and
why we bought the 37+ and was the perfect boat for our needs.

To continue the sport I bring out anyone that expresses interest that wants to
enjoy the water and lifestyle, it’s only as exclusive as we make it.

Joel, you make a good point; I did not make a conscious decision to go C I
bought my first C sight unseen from an estate of a guy in Austin Texas, and I
had to go get it and bring it back to Louisville, KY myself; I was really
trying to flip it and make a quick profit, but when my wife saw it, she said,
:you sell our current boat, we're keeping this one!"   After some time passed
and we went looking for a bigger boat, I looked and looked and couldn't find a
better boat that the C I had, so I bought the same model, a few sizes larger,
moving from a 25 to a 29; ditto for the 33 and now we have the 37; because we
are on a river, that;s about as big as we can go, but I can still drool over
those 41s and 44s.!  (Of course, I blame all this on Rob Ball...and sing

Human Age?

How about the oldest and youngest of the C era vessel? That would be an
interesting honor.

Regarding age spans, the limits are less meaning full. For example, the local
amateur
radio club has about the same 35 - 86 limits, but mean of the distribution is
likely 70. On the other hand, the age spread of our clubs Viper fleet is about
16 - 68,
with an average age in the 20s.

We work from the boat and try to keep up with the maintenance. (Lost a lower

take you far if you put in the time and maintenance.

Re: Stus-List Listers Age Range

2020-07-15 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Who knew this would turn into such an interesting thread. When I get a few
minutes I’ll do the descriptive statistics on the responses and report the
mean. Here’s to Cam, youngest member at 32!

I have 30 MK I hull #79, which I named Grenadine, built in 1972. I was nine
years old then. I’m in my fifth season with her, and it’s the best one yet.
I’ve given her lots of TLC. She deserves it and more.

When the Viking Mars landers were flying in the mid-70s, my dad was in mission
control at JPL. His friend had a Cal 29 and a son my age (12-13), and we’d
weekend on Catalina. I was hooked. A bunch of life went by, and I started
farting around with Sunfish and Hobies whenever I could. Then I bought
captained charters in the Grenadines at charity auctions, and introduced my
family to the wonders. Started taking courses, joined a J/22 timeshare
program, and crewed on other people’s race boats for a few years before finding
Grenadine. Now have about ten years’ experience and a few bareboat charters
under my belt. I only wish I’d started this trajectory earlier in life. But
at least I’ve got my kids hooked :)

Cheers,
Randy

1950. One of the early fiberglass boats - similar to a Day Sailor or a Rodes
but with a weighted CB and no keel. I put lots of TLC into that boat too.
Unfortunately she was totaled by a lightening bolt while tied up in a marina on
Lake Erie the year after I passed her along to a friend who lives in Buffalo.
The lightening turned the hull into a colander (mast was not grounded and there
wasn’t really anything to ground it too). The crazy thing is a few years
earlier I was caught out in a thunderstorm on Claytor lake in VA - glad the
boat wasn’t hit then!

I stated sailing when I was 10 and my Dad and I built a 12 foot sloop from

Do not go up the mast no more, that's for my son (52 yrs).   All my
winches are the original Barients.  Since /Fireball /is sitting in my
yard (too many COVI 19 restrictions in RI) I have pulled my primaries
(28s) and secondaries (26) to overhaul.  I need to get the drums sand
blasted in middle since they slip too easily, it is either that or I am
getting weaker.  Have had Fireball since 1980, my son was 23.   Started
sailing in 1957 off NewCastle NH in a 8' pram (P-Dink), Graduated to
Thistle (wood kit built in garage) in 1959 which I campaigned until
1976. Besides Fireball still have the P-dink and a Laser, but it getting
harder to duck under their booms.  I guess everything ages.

Regarding age spans, the limits are less meaning full.  For example,
the local amateur
radio club has about the same 35 - 86 limits, but mean of the
distribution  is
likely 70.  On the other hand, the age spread of our clubs Viper fleet
is about 16 - 68,

with an average age in the 20s.

I'm only 66 but inspired by you guys. My boat is 31 years old and going
strong.

Don't see any young guys at the boatyard. I'm younger than most of the
skippers I meet at the yard.

History if interested: I bought my first boat, a used sunfish at 20 and sailed
on the back bay, behind the barrier islands of Atlantic City, NJ. Bought a
Cape Dory 22 new, when I was 27, single no kids. Met my wife and we made some
cruises together between Connecticut and Chesapeake Bay. We both got into
windsurfing and travelled for that to the Caribbean and Hawaii. Sold the boat
to buy a house and have kids. Bought my present boat and first C when I was
49 after getting a bonus from work. I recently retired and get my first SS
check this month, so I feel somewhat successful though not rich by any means.
I'm presently refitting my wonderful C, replacing windows and painting the
deck. I can't afford to hire the yard, so have to learn how to do all the
projects myself. I never wanted to learn so much about epoxy and fiberglass
and paint chemistry. But it is very rewarding to see the few improvements I've
made. Appreciate all the support and advice from this list and YouTube which
I find amazing.

Re: Stus-List Listers Age Range

2020-07-15 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
That is an interesting point – I grew up with My father sailing on an old 55’
Yawl, owned by an Heir to Eckerd Drugs, and he had a Pro Skipper during the
depression, then a free skipper thereafter, but he pretty much let that skipper
and the crew have free reign of the boat. I didn’t realise it then, but there
were levels to the crew – 3 or 4 from the 1908 – 1918 range, a few from 1920 –
1930, and then the next decade. They all seemed the same to me at the time. But
like you say, you need foredeck and grinders, and I guess every decade, one
group would move back to the cockpit and some fresh bucks up to the foredeck!.
I guess we unknowingly practice age discrimination. Good thing I own my boat or
I would be on the dock!.

Entrada, Erie PA (68, not 58, guess I’m losing it too)

I expected to see young sailors, but not older ones. Until I saw Doug's name
and age, I thought I was the oldest (age 81) on the list. I started sailing
fifty-three years ago, and racing about two years later. I still race, with
younger crew to do the things I no longer wish to do.

Re: Stus-List Listers Age Range

2020-07-15 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
That's true, Bill. It's a big lake. It fills up with power boats and jet skis
in the summer though. There are many yachts there and even a fueling station
for floatplanes. It's where the oil money in Tulsa goes to play.

Ironically, I live 1.5 hours' drive south of there on the shore of Lake
Tenkiller but there's not much point in moving it here. Tenkiller is a drowned,
narrow river valley where to sail it, you would have to tack all the time and
try hard not to sail too close to the high bluffs where the wind is blocked.
It gets crowded in the summer as well.

56 here.  Between sailing and flying I sometimes think I will be perpetually
the youngest person doing it, neither seems to get much new blood.

Glad to see a 35 year-old on the list!

Speaking of age, a broker told me C owners were terrible customers. He said

generations?

Human Age?

How about the oldest and youngest of the C era vessel?  That would be an
interesting honor.

Regarding age spans, the limits are less meaning full.  For example, the
local amateur

radio club has about the same 35 - 86 limits, but mean of the distribution
is

likely 70.  On the other hand, the age spread of our clubs Viper fleet is
about 16 - 68,

with an average age in the 20s.

Re: Stus-List Barient 27 winch servicing - still squeaks!

2020-07-15 Thread Matt Wolford via CnC-List
Andrew (Andy?), I misspoke. The topping lift and spin halyards on my boat use
Barient 23s, not 27s. The part removal issue I had, which appears identical to
what you described, was on one of the 23s. I also have a Barient 27 for my
main outhaul, Cunningham, and reefing gear. However, I believe Barient made
two 27 ST models: the good one, and a cheaper version with a plastic or delrin
self-tailing clamp. I have the latter, and the clamp piece was broken when I
bought the boat. It took me about two years to get a replacement part from the
Australian company. The first one is probably still sitting in a Customs
warehouse in California. Whatever happened to the plastic clamp piece must
have been violent as the original line lifter had been replaced with a
“homemade” stainless one.

I’m afraid I’m not going to be much help resolving your squeak issue. Sorry.

My 27s are original Barient.

My boat is a 1976 42 Custom (only six made, mine being the last one). I raced
against it when I was kid. The original Baltic 42 was a sistership.
Impressive looking boat.

I think the Barient 27s are measured somehow differently than Lewmar; they're
roughly equivalent to a Lewmar 40, size-wise. What size boat do you have?
Anybody have a good size comparison tool across winch brands?

use mine for my spin pole topping lift.

Thanks Matt! I'll try some penetrating oil and see where it gets me. When you
got the lifter arm off were you able to adjust the height so it no longer
rubbed against the clamp ring? Or were you able to lubricate it a bit so it
didn't squeak?

Hi all -

The two Barient 27 primary winches on the Safari were in sorry shape, so last
week I decided to service them. After a rather protracted battle I was able to
disassemble and clean/oil/grease one of them to my satisfaction, however - when
reassembling the first winch I realized that, while definitely smoother
internal operations, it still squeaks!

I think I've traced it to the line lifter rubbing on the clamp ring (see manual
here

). I didn't think I needed to remove the line lifter originally, but after
tracing the squeak there I wasn't able to unscrew it (the manual says to tap it
with a soft hammer - hitting it rather hard with a soft hammer didn't help
either).

Does anyone else have these winches on their boat? Anybody else had this
problem?

Andrew

Stus-List Virtual Rendezvous

2020-07-15 Thread David Risch via CnC-List
Great idea. But all good meetings need a moderator and an agenda...otherwise
it can devolve pretty quickly ( e.g. Edd blathering all over the place about
how "cool" his boat is, his needing eye bleach etc. etc.)

IMHO...I am a big fan of information at a "rendezvous" that is not usually
available. So perhaps we ask "The Robs" (Ball and Mazza), and perhaps
additional folks, who can provide history and stories about the marque. We
have here in the NE have heard from Rob Ball a number of times, but others have
not, and he (they) are a great listen.

(Not that I will be attending or anything...)

These ages parallel the informal surveys from various motorcycle groups I
belong to. Maybe youngsters don't like motion?

I'm 64 and have been motorcycling most of my life, and sailing for 2/3s of
it.

Wise choice in these uncertain times as far as COVID.  Could a consideration be made to keep the date but have a virtual 2 hour call with the prospective parties?  People could attend, have a good picture of the boat and a few others to possibly share if the mood suits? This way the rendezvous actually happens but in a virtual setting?Keep the spirit alive!Regards,Bob Tallman2000 C 121 Blue StarOn Tue, Jul 14, 2020 at 9:40 PM wrote:Send CnC-List mailing list submissions to
