Nothing like zipping along in a bottomless donut with a 7.5 hp motor. Second, motors are nice but a pain to deal with. We just row most of the time now. The motor is in a storage shed in the backyard. Third, if I do go back to a motor, weight will be the primary consideration. Sure, it's fun to plane in our inflatable with the 7.5 hp but having to mount and dismount the 80 pound motor with a halyard is a pain. I can get to the beach just as well with a 2.5 lightweight motor. Think about it. You sailed to the anchorage at 6 knots. Why do you need to do 20 knots to get to the beach? -- Dennis C. I bought Pradel,35 Mk 1 #173 January 1999. I specifically was Poking for a 35 mk1 for her sailing ability as well as accomodations for my wife and four children. We raced her very successfully for several years with her old sails but as the kids moved on, now I've settled into full cruising mode with roller furling, 2 dozen crab traps and an inflatable and outboard carried onboard. Now I get my racing fix sailing an old Comet but spending most of my time cruising the Chesapeake out of the Magothy River. Re: Stus-List Diving your own boat
Chuck, I've used CSC for a number of years now. Initially, it worked great, but the last two paint jobs have given me very poor results. I think they've changed the formula. Anecdotally, my diver recommends a Petit product, can't remember which, but I'll find out before my next haulout, and real experience, my brother has had excellent results from the same paint, same location. When I clean the bottom, every couple of years, I attach a 3M Scotchbrite pad to a pair of brown jersey work gloves with some silicon adhesive, put the bow on a sandbar and scrub the bottom. I can do 90% of the hull while standing on the bar. I may have to break down and get a mask and snorkel, but I can get it done in 45 minutes with just a pair of fins. Some day, if you're in Black Hole Creek, I'll show you the sandbars with a sharp drop. My wife usually stands in ankle deep water holding the bow while I swim. I'm sorry we didn't hook up this year but we were pretty busy with my daughter's wedding in OCNJ. Looking forward to next spring already. I was down at the club yesterday replacing moorings and was tempted to hoist the sails, but I just winterized the engine last week! Chuck, we need to get the wives together! My wife doesn't like it either, but she does put up with it. Fortunately, she explained she has every confidence in me and the boat. I might be white knuckled at the helm, worrying about my 40 year old boat, while she's curled up in a corner of the cockpit reading a book! She absolutely hates to race but reluctantly crews my Comet, but only because our son and fiance' are sailing theirs. Might be on the river this Saturday. Should be a nice weekend! All good, but not for my girl. Hiring a coach or taking a course won't change the fact that she doesn't like that sailboats lean when powered up. She's just not interested in a sailing course or coaching or changing. We're 60 and been together 30+ years. We've had this boat for 12 years and she likes harbor cruises under power or anchoring overnight, or all the social stuff at the dock or rafting up. My daughter is the same. My son however is like me and took to sailing right off. He joined his college's sailing team and loves racing with me. I've raced the boat without my wife or daughter and won regattas with 1st time ever crew, so I assure you I am fairly competent. I can calmly explain which line to put to what winch and which way to turn it and never raise my voice except to be heard. I've put newbies on the wheel and coached them to steer and they loved steering. I've also taken guests who just wanted a ride, didn't want to do anything and I just set the autohelm and do it all like I do when I'm alone. My wife likes that style until it gets above 10 knots when the boat comes alive and we start making 6 plus knots and heel to 25 degrees cause the apparent becomes 16 and then we're doing 7.3 knots and lovin it, until she's almost crying something like, do you have to make it lean so much? Let's find a place to go swimming. She's missing the sailing gene, but I can't change her and she has no desire to take a course or let me hire a coach. I guess I'll run our boat like a trawler when she's aboard, and save the sailing for when she's not there. I'm gonna order that tow toy. I learned to love the lifestyle and a bit of racing but what really shifted my thinking was crewing on someone else's boat. Consider this, expectations are high and so is pressure when sailing with a spouse. When sailing on another accomplished skippers boat as added crew, you see how the experienced crew handles everything and before you know it you relax, a few years have passed, and your right there with them, loving every second. I wouldn't expect every wife to catch the bug I did, but they might certainly see sailing from a different perspective and enjoy it more with a higher level of confidence. I know on Lake Lanier and other bodies of water there are some very patient and good skippers that would welcome a learning spouse. I'd be happy to help as well... Re: Stus-List Engine Sound Insulation - Go Without an engine?
Back when I was a teenager, my brother and I almost always sailed our Columbia Sabre (5.5m hull made into a narrow racer/cruiser) in and out of the slip. Our auxiliary power was a temperamental 5hp British Seagull (aren't they all) that was a pain to carry up the companionway and mount on the transom. I learned early that good springlines were the key. I've always wanted to practice sailing to a dock, but I don't have a slip. I've sailed on and off of a single point mooring but not my three point mooring. The three point dictates which direction you're approaching from regardless where the wind is. Same as a slip but with a slip you can sidle up with the spring line, not so with the mooring. Quickly grabbing a stern line and throwing it on a winch is fine and all but not optimal. Optimal is bringing the boat to a stop and leisurely dealing with the lines. Not always an option depending on conditions of course. How do you stop the boat with the wind behind you? I'm eager to learn this but I'm also eager not to damage my boat on the gnarly breakwall just forward of my slot. We're finally gonna get a sail in today after work, maybe I'll try it with the motor in neutral, just in case. Main or jib? And in a man overboard situation, I absolutely would prefer to use the engine. Unless it was too rough, or as very often happens in the kefuffle of a man overboard, a line wraps around the prop. Re: Stus-List more atomic 4 issues..
Danny, I had a similar issue with my A4 a couple of years ago. I felt that the issue was an air leak in the fuel system. After checking every connection I could think of, spending money on a mechanic, installing a new, electric fuel pump, etc. I decided to pull the fuel tank. When I took off the pick up fitting and lifted it up, the plastic pick up tube fell off the barbed fitting. 15 cents of the pink teflon tape later and the problem was solved! Okay, Given all the discussion, I've decided the next step, as it is really the only thing I did not replace, is to buy a 5 gal outboard engine gas can and run the engine with a brand new gas can and brand new gas. My gut is leading me back to the tank and the pickup tube. I think this will eliminate the entire existing gas system and either show me the light or eliminate it from the investigation. Of course, I won't be able to test it all out until Saturday. If the Gas can does not do the trick, I'll swap the carburetor again... I'll go home and clean that up tonight so I have it at the ready. So, should I, if the gas can does not prove to be the issue, continue on the 5 gal OB tank and swap the carb or go back to the existing tank before swapping out the carburetor? Alright, the saga continues. We went for a sea trial Sunday after the changes, i.e. Vent line cleared, filters changed, clamps tightened. The engine ran great all the way to Cuttyhunk. I probably ran it about 3 hours. Two of those hours I ran it a little harder than I normally do after having read Don M's reasons for having black sooty spark plugs. I thought my problems were solved. On our way home from cuttyhunk, We motored out the harbor and decided that, because the wind was a little light, we would motor home to run the engine some more. 50 minutes into our ride home, the same thing, only a bit slower. the whole, slow, stall happened over maybe a minute or two. Some sputter, then run normal, a little more sputter, then normal and then a slow stall. We then sailed home and into the mooring field. This is actually a benefit of the engine troubles, I've been a bit intimidated about sailing onto the mouth of the river due to the current and very tight channel flanked by shoals and some pretty ominous looking rocks. I've now had to sail into the harbor twice over this last weekend. At one point we were probably doing 4 or 4.5knts through the water but only 1 to 1.5knts over the ground fighting that current. On one side of the boat it a big, rocky cliff and the other shoal. it was a little adrenalin pumping! Anyway, the approach to our mooring was dead, head to wind, along with the current in the same direction, I lost forward motion under sail and started the engine. She started right up and we motored onto the mooring without incident. So, safely moored, I pulled the vent tube, it was clear. I then went below and pulled a spark plug and it was all black and sooty again after maybe 4 hours running time. I used the Moyer rebuild kit on the carb that is on there now. I'm not sure but, I think I changed the main jet to the moyer recomended one at that time. I think it came with the rebuild kit. My earlier idling issues seemed to have been solved by swapping out the carb that came with the exchange engine for the one I rebuilt off the original engine and had just sitting around as a spare. I think what I would like to do now is, clean up the carb that came with the exchange engine. and swap them back out. I'll then replace the plugs and run it some more. Unless you guys think I should maybe try another path forward. Danny P.S. Cuttyhunk

I painted my boat for less than $2,500 a couple of years ago. Did all of the prep work, bought the Awlgrip primer and paint, and hired a guy to shoot it. After the haul out, storage for the month, painting, new shaft, dripless shaft log, new cutlass bearing, bottom paint and relaunch I think I was up to $4,000 all in. Of course, nowadays most yards won't allow you to spray Awlgrip without an environmentally sound, enclosed space. I was lucky and got away with it. Yeah, you get a slight fading if you don’t wax. I don’t mind because it still looks good, and I don’t want to have to strip off wax to do an occasional touch-up when I scrape something. That’s another advantage. Stuff happens. And Brightside is easy to touch up. My plan is to add another coat or two when I haul out every four or five years. That adds about two days to my yard time. The cost to do a nice job is under $100. With good prep, there’s no problem with peeling or chipping. Re: Stus-List Shallows and deep draft
Chuck, many of the anchorages we visit will accommodate 6'3. While you may not be able to go all the way into Swan Creek, you can certainly enter and pick up a mooring at Swan Creek Marina. Corsica is great and Reed Creek next door is challenging whether you draw 5'3 or 6'3. We overnighted in Harris Creek last Sunday off the Choptank, but you'd need to sail around Blackwalnut Point since Knapp's Narrows has shoaled. Our depth sounder is still not working under power, despite trying Bill Bina's suggestion of turning on incandescent lights, so any mooring is a challenge for us! I guess I'm just saying don't totally exclude the Easter Shore. By the way, just got back yesterday from picking up a nice Laser 28 from Des Moines, IA with my son. Since I was replumimg I also fit a thermal mixing valve so that the hot water (170°) wouldn't burn anyone. https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B8pEh5lnvP1ydEpoMU1MWmx6Qms/edit Josh Muckley S/V Sea Hawk 1989 CC 37+ Solomons, MD On Jul 8, 2014 4:46 PM, Joel Aronson via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote: All, I've got a Raritan heater. Re: Stus-List 4th of July
Joe, you should go to Swan Creek for the Rock Hall fireworks on the 3rd and then Greys Inn Creek! One year we did Swan Creek, St. Michaels Baltimore and Gibson Island and managed to catch the shows each night. This year we're planning to be in Solomon's for the 4th. We'll have to get together at Reed Creek one weekend with Chuck Schaefer so he can show me the way in. Depth sounder stops working when I start the motor. Haven't run aground yet but it's only a matter of time. Chris Price Pradel P.S are you in charge of the Corsica Race again? Re: Stus-List What happened 15th 16th June
Chuck, had a great sail to Swan Creek Saturday, not so good coming back on Sunday. We were looking for you out there, but no luck. Like Joe says, Corsica is great, but I prefer Reed Creek just shy of Corsica. I should be sailing the Comet NA's this weekend on the Chester at Rock Hall YC, but work has gotten in the way. We'll keep an eye out for you and one day meet up for drinks at PSA or Broad Creek.
