Thanks guys.  I'm having the dripless replaced and it does seem fine but the
fairing around the strut doesn't seem to hold up over time.
What would you fill the area around strut with?

Stus-List Propeller Strut

2024-03-03 Thread Peter Cowenhoven via CnC-List
Does any know how the strut on an 84 Landfall 35 is affixed.  I'm wondering if
there is a backing plate because if so there is no access to that part of the
hull as they installed the floor and box over it.  Or is it just screwed in?
That part of the hull doesnt seem partcularly thick or strong.  I'm wondering
if glassing over it to re-enforce it is a possibility??
Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much Joe.  Didn't know there was a belt on the 4000.  Does it go

I will probably do as you say and buy a new drive unit and see if that works.

scavenged over the years.

You can try and fix it or get a new drive for around $600 or so. It will work
fine with the AH-4000 computer. The CPT is a much stronger unit, but keep in
mind in both cases the weight of the boat is being used as a proxy for how hard
the boat is to steer. These things are really only loosely related at best. An
AH-4000 has plenty more power than needed to steer a freighter, it isn’t
physically hard to steer a big ship. The issue would be the steering algorithms
would be way off.

If your boat is hard for YOU to steer, Otto will have a hard time too. After
fixing or replacing your drive I would look to getting the boat to balance.

All that said, the AH-4000 is hopeless in a big following sea.

I've got the old 4000 and many times it doesn't turn the wheel and just clicks.
Certainly when there's a lot weather helm there's no chance.

I'm also wondering if a new 4000 drive unit would be able to hold the force of

I see the 4000 or the new EV 1000 is rated st 16,500 and I'm at about 13,500

Steve,
I'm in the process of doing this now without the metal frames that Leaky
Windows provides.  I'm having two cut from 1/4 inch acrylic plexiglass grey
2064 tint at a local  glass shop in CT for a total of $500.  I'm going to affix
it with 3M vhb tape and seal it with the Dow corning 795 black silicone.  The
tricky part is getting the old brown adhesive off the gel coat. It looks like
it's going to pull up some of the gelcoat so there will be some needed repair.
Here is a good life link to the process.https://youtu.be/MQyjxVUskd8

This is a wierd one.  My marine head set up is direct to tank or direct

I'm having an issue with somehow nothing going to the tank even though you hear
it but the pumpout hose from the tank fills up while the tank doesn't??
I know there isn't a clog from toilet to tank as I just replaced all the hoses

Any thoughts?  How the hell is the pumpout hose getting filled but not the tank?

It always starts very nicely.   I was running at around 2900 for hours.  Also
had a bit of a throttle issue where it would slip down to lower rpm's and I had
to hold it to keep it above 2500. But I couldn't get over 3000.
After on the dock I started it and it easily went to 3400 or so.  At that point
it blew a bunch of black carbom in the water.

Steve,
I'm in the process of doing this now without the metal frames that Leaky
Windows provides.  I'm having two cut from 1/4 inch acrylic plexiglass grey
2064 tint at a local  glass shop in CT for a total of $500.  I'm going to affix
it with 3M vhb tape and seal it with the Dow corning 795 black silicone.  The
tricky part is getting the old brown adhesive off the gel coat. It looks like
it's going to pull up some of the gelcoat so there will be some needed repair.
Here is a good life link to the process.https://youtu.be/MQyjxVUskd8

Will,
Sorry to hear it.  In early May, had a scrape up as well on the way down the
Connecticut River to our marina in Westbrook.  We cut the engine and sailed up
the river waiting for the Haddam bridge to open.  Sailed too close to the bank
and tried to tack but sails lost power and the current took us bow first into
the rocky bank.  We scraped slowly but the engine in reverse got us off pretty
quickly.  After the boat operated normally and the bilge activity was normal.
Still need to see what the damage is.
Good luck, I hope it is fixable.

Stus-List Battery Bank Configuration

2020-01-04 Thread Peter Cowenhoven via CnC-List
This may be obvious to most of you but came as a surprise to me.  I've got a 3
battery bank with 2 deep cycles and 1 starter battery.  It's got a 1 All 2
switch.  I was testing load and was surprised to see that if you're using 1 or
2 it's also drawing power off the starter battery too.
Doesn't this defeat the point. Shouldn't the starter battery be completely
spared while not running the engine.
Is there a better configuration?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance.

Interesting commentary on the Flex O Fold.  I've got one on a Landfall 35 with
a Westerbeke 30 and it won't hold at 3000 rpm for but a few moments.  Next time
I look down I'm back in the low 2000's.

Stus-List Landfall 35 - Manual

2019-09-05 Thread Peter Cowenhoven via CnC-List
I'm a new owner of an 84 Landfall 35 traditional cabin layout!
Does anyone know if there is a decent manual for it? I didn't see one on the
C site.
Thanks,
Peter

The survey suggested the bottom was wet (199 and anove) with readings from 250
to 450.
Not sure what to make of this in a boat that is almost 35 years old.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 35 delamination

2019-08-27 Thread Peter Cowenhoven via CnC-List
FYI Survey:
EXTERIOR HULL: [B1] The topsides and bottom were sounded with a hammer and I
found de-laminated areas of approximately three square feet on the port side,
four square feet on the starboard side both below and above the water line at
the stem. This de-lamination apparently comes from the anchor locker drain
(directly above) that is drilled through the core. Usually the hull core stops
several inched from the center line so that a drain hole would be drilled
through solid fiberglass but in this vessel and other C models I have seen
the core is run to the center line. While desirable and ultimately justified to
maintain structural integrity, a repair to the de-lamination not immediately
necessary. However, it is important to prevent further water intrusion into the
core. This can be accomplished by boring our the drain hole to install a 1/2"
ID fiberglass or stainless steel tube, removing enough of the inner skin to
allow packing the area around the new drain tube with epoxy, then fiber glassing

There's no visible signs.  He was taking moisture readings in the 200 to 225
range and registered delamination based on the hammer test.  The boat well
priced so it doesn't change much for me.

I am currently looking at an 85 Landfall 35 the surveyor has found delamination
in the bow above and below waterline, he says due to the construction and
drainage of the anchor locker.  Anyone have this issue?
Also some delamination at water line starboard midship.
