Stus-List Going all pex

2024-01-17 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
I replaced all of my freshwater plumbing with Whale Systems 15mm tubing.  I
chose Whale because their literature stated that their system was meant to be
installed in places that moved - boats, RV's and that their connectors were
meant to have 90° curves right out of a connector.  The original Grey polybutal
had developed cracks which let in air...keeping water from making it to the
pump. The Whale system worked ok...I did have some issues sorting some
connectors.   While replacing the hoses I took the opportunity to pull the
water tanks, replace the fill and overflow hoses.  Also rebuilt the manifold.
Project turned out great :-)$0.02Spencer Johnson ..former owner84 LF 38 #165

to the engine coolant circuit [no A/C on board, just 12 V]   Planning to
replace it with the same unit as that “should” be the easiest / quickest. Two
questions for the group:  1] The heater comes in galvanized steel and white
epoxy versions.  The latter is more $ but is it worth it from a corrosion or
other standpoint?   It is not visible so aesthetics are not important.  2]
Found both units on Amazon for less than Defender and other distributors.  Has
anyone bought parts / equipment from Amazon Marine?  Usually Amazon delivers
when they indicate, but I ordered some ink for a home printer and it still has

Amazing how a “simple” fall can cause a cascade of events.  Not much comfort,
but at least it was tangentially boating related…

I have an old AH-4000. If it starts doing what you describe the belt may be
slipping or the pin that holds the drive gear is going. I have rebuilt my drive
many times and my current unit is a combination of 3 or 4 old ones I have
scavenged
 over the years.
You can try and fix it or get a new drive for around $600 or so. It will work
fine with the AH-4000 computer. The CPT is a much stronger unit, but keep in
mind in both cases the weight of the boat is being used as a proxy for how hard
the
boat is to steer. These things are really only loosely related at best. An
AH-4000 has plenty more power than needed to steer a freighter, it isn’t
physically hard to steer a big ship. The issue would be the steering algorithms
would be way off.

If your boat is hard for YOU to steer, Otto will have a hard time too. After
fixing or replacing your drive I would look to getting the boat to balance.
All that said, the AH-4000 is hopeless in a big following sea.

Does anyone have any experience with the CPT belt driven vs the old Autohelm

I've got the old 4000 and many times it doesn't turn the wheel and just clicks.
Certainly when there's a lot weather helm there's no chance.

I'm also wondering if a new 4000 drive unit would be able to hold the force of
the wheel better.

I see the 4000 or the new EV 1000 is rated st 16,500 and I'm at about 13,500
while the CPT is rated to 40,000.

Thanks in advance for any intel or thoughts on this.

Re: Stus-List Rudder post zerk fitting

2020-03-08 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
When I had the rudder out I cleaned up the hole where the grease cap was, had a
5' 1/4" hydraulic hose made up by a local tractor service shop that had a
fitting to go in the rudder post and a zero at the other end.  I used Wests
6/10 epoxy on the rudder post threads to just hand tight.  I ran the hose to
under the shelf in the starboard laserette (the hatch with engine access) and
mounted it on some 1/2" plywood using a copper pipe hanger.  Took a bit of
grease to fill the hosebut works great.  Much easier than that darn grease
cap.If the existing hole is really stripped, maybe the fitting next size up
would just cut the threads into the rudder tube.  I would recommend the grease
hose upgrade...I think the hose they made up for me costs less than $15 with
crimped on fittings...He did it while I waitedcool stuff!Spencer Johnson 84

Stus-List Cabin sole resurfacing

2019-11-17 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
I'm a little late for this thread...but I have two sections of my cabin sole in
the kitchen with wet polyurethane .  My cabin sole wasn't too bad for 35 years
of service but had a few dings and scratches... an is a good winter project.
I'm using Minwax fast drying Polyuruthane matte finish.  4 hour drying time
means 3 coats per day.  I gave it a fair sanding with 120 followed by 220 being
careful not to get to bare wood.  I did this a few years agoit looks great,
but , was pretty slipperyrugs would not stay in place and when healing
under sail stuff slid all over. This time I have added crushed walnut shells to
the last coat of Polyuruthane as a non skid.   I did find one interesting post
that said to use 3/4" masking tape over the holly so as not to have brown
specks showing up.  Getting the right ratio of walnut to Polyuruthane took some
testingI found that 1.5 teaspoons walnut to 4 oz. Polyuruthane seemed to
work.  The final problem is how to keep the crushed walnuts suspended long
enough to get enough on the brush.   We'll see...Spencer Johnson 84 LF38

Stus-List 34 Rudder shaft bearing

2019-11-17 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
I had a similar problem with water pooling around the rudder shaft bearing.
When I went to upgrade the starting pedestal (Edson Vision II) I found that the
cockpit sole was water saturated and delaminated.   The solution was to cut out
a 2' x 2.5' section and replace it with marine plywood that was vacuum bagged
in place.  This includes reinstalling the top rudder bearing and refinishing
the whole cockpit sole with non skid.  The yard did the work...For about
$3,600.  They did a great jobone that really needed to be done.  No more
pooling around the post.  And the pedestal is beautiful :-)Spencer Johnson 84

both the bilge alarm and the emergency bilge pump switch.  I had some 3 way
fittings from Defender (below) that I have used before which have crimp/heat

logic of a sealed connector that has an unsealed junction exposed.   In the
past I used a larger crimp/shrink butt connector and stuck two wires into one
end and now that seems like a better solution.<2024633WY121.jpg>2. There is
also an open connector block for all the mast wiring in the same area of the

Re: Stus-List question

2019-04-24 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
Greetings Camille and welcome to the list!  My LF38 has not had your issue.
But. When I upgraded the steering pedestal we found that the cockpit sole had
completely desalinated, so, we had about a 2'x3' piece of marine plywood vacuum
sealed with fiberglass resin and new holes drilled, with edges sealed,  for the
pedestal and rudder post.  In retrospect I had noticed a puddle of rainwater
accumulating around the rudder post.  It was about a $3,500 repair but needed
to be done. The grease cap is on the aft side of the lower rudder.  I replaced
it with a grease fitting on a 5' hose leading to a bracket under the strbd
laserette.  I add a squeeze once a year.  BTW, I've removed and replaced the
rudder about 6 times.  I finally had it rebuilt by competition composites in
Ottawa.  Now it is only 150lbs instead of 300 :-oGood luck, Camille!Spencer

rebuilt the manifold.  For that I used PVC connectors and valves... that worked
best to eliminate air lesks. The biggest problem was finding the precise
connectors to work everywhere...BSP, tapered pipe, 3/4" at the water

Hi Danny
If the resin comes out milky you need to warm it up to de-crystalize
it.  A bucket of very hot water will do the trick nicely, plop the can

I too elected to get the rope.  The nice thing is that it is easily removed
and replaced/reduced/increased.  It is also more flexible so it will not
hold a shape and will articulate with the sail fabric betted.  Just my
observations and opinion.  I've had 1 new sails with foam,  an old sail
with rope and a new sail with rope.

The rope or the foam is designed to take up the belly of the sail when its
fuelled.  Without it the sail will act as though it is blown out while
close hulled.

My foam luff never collapsed in 12 years of my use and the sail was 20 years
old when I retired it.

Stus-List Feathering props

2016-02-22 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List

Davidmy LF38 came with an AutoStream stainless feathering prop...I thank my
PO every year.  I just add grease, change O rings, and never a problem.
Forward and reverse thrust is superb.  I can get up to about 7+
knots...depending on waves and headwinds.Westerberg 27 Diesel.Spencer Johnson

Stus-List Mystery Coolant

2016-01-29 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List

I have a similar problem.every year / winter I loose engine coolant into
the 'after bilge'.   All hoses replaced.  Still happens.  Haven't found the
source of the leak yet.Any recommendations for coolant dyes?  Probably less
than a quart, but never a drop during the sailing season. Spencer Johnson1984

Stus-List Anchor locker hinge attachment

2015-12-22 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List

Patrickwhen I purchased Alegria in 2006 the survey mentioned wetness in the
anchor locker and cockpit seat hinges.  I replaced the anchor locker hinges
with suncor ss hinges thru bolted and beded with butyl tape.  No more leaks.
To dry them out I brought them home, drilled out the holes, and left them in
the closing with the furnace...warm, dry, and ventelated. Spencer Johnson84 LF

Stus-List Water coming from somewhere

2015-09-24 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List

Hi JoelI also have a LF38 and am having multiple issues with the fresh
water system.   I know there is a leak in the port tank and the screw on access
cover threads are not seating right.  I can see a small but steady trickle of
water going into the bilge from that tank.  The center/v-berth tank and the
stbd tank are okbut I have air leaks in the lines causing the pump to run
on.  I did redo the manifold index the galley sink to have pvc ball valves and
added a foot or so of clear tubing to be able to view the flowI see the air
bubbles :-(AND, on the pressure side I have water leaking from the outside
curve of the Grey tubing in some places.I forsee a winter project.

Stus-List LF38 dodger

2014-06-29 Thread ssjohnson via CnC-List
Hi Wally...dodger, bimini, connector, side panels clear screens...and a ss
hand hold.  On Lake Michigan the flies can impare a great day of sailing and us
old folks-well, my wife, is very concerned with excess uv.  I had a nice sail
with John Kretschmer_ from ft Lauderdale to Lunenburg NS...9 days..when we hit
Canada...nothing but thunderstorms .. bot we were high and dry in his enclosure
(47' Kaufman Quetzal).
Mount Prospect!  Your old home is close to Mount Prospect Public Library.
..where we both work. ..are there lots of Bryant around?  Looking for a Tim
that grew up on Lake St in Wilmette..
I am jealous that you have 'escaped' and appreciate Stella Blue's website lots.
 Fair Winds !

Spencer -- What do you mean by a full enclosure?  Do you mean hard
dodger, or just a new dodger designed to mate with a bimini and side
panels?  I'm just curious, but wouldn't mind seeing pics when you're done.

PS.  You are in Mt Prospect IL?  I lived there as a child, at 121 N.
