Most likely keel bolt threads corroded. Only way they could find good threads
is by using washers. Surprised they didn’t suggest a more complete repair.

Wow. Thanks for the pic. I didn't realize it would be bedded that deeply.
It is amazing how water will find a way.
I was able to tighten and use WaterWeld, as suggested, but unfortunately,
the strut was not the major contributing factor to the water intrusion. The
aft keel bolt is leaking. It is curious as to why there are 10
stainless washers on that bolt. PO said she had the keel rebed 5 years ago,
and that is what they did. Maybe they tightened it too much, and sheared it
from the lead keel? I am having it hauled this coming week to have a pro

Price? WaterWeld is about $6 for a 2 ounce tube.

I know it works. I discovered a small leak below the waterline last year
while working near the rudder tube. Probably coming from a defective layup
around the tube. Slapped some WaterWeld on it. Hasn't leaked since.

I keep a tube of WaterWeld on the boat.

I've used MarineTex but never below the waterline.

Yep, those 4 bolts are most probably the strut bolts. No big deal to drop
the strut a bit and re-bed it once you haul out. Until then try to tighten
them.

As I am a bit pessimistic about successfully stopping the leak by
tightening the bolts, go to an auto parts store or a big box hardware store
and get a couple tubes of WaterWeld.

https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-8277-White-Pack/dp/B000BRQ0TW

Work it up per instructions and apply it to the leaks. At first it won't
seem like it's sticking but keep working it onto the leaks. After 8-12
minutes it will finally stick. Now you can finish your season. At haul
out, you'll have a bit of work removing it but then you can fix the strut.

You may have to re-fair the strut after you re-bed it depending on how
speed oriented you are.

Re: Stus-List 35 MK III leak from Propeller log or strut

2020-06-28 Thread Graham Collins via CnC-List

Hi David

Ah, the surprises of a new (old) boat.  Good times.  Mine was leaking
seacocks.

Probably worth trying to tighten the bolts for the strut while still in
the water, I would.  I don't see it making anything worse.  Best access
to that strut area would be to shut off the port cockpit drain seacock
and pull off the hose from it, this will allow you to get back in there
without as many contortions (but still not a good time).  I've spent
quality time in there installing the autopilot, and also had the strut off.

If the bolts stick up enough it would be worth gently grasping the
exposed end of the bolt to prevent it from spinning, and tighten the nut
using an open end wrench.

And if the engine is a 3GM it is my understanding that a fair bit of
shaking isn't unusual at low RPM, mine is fairly annoying at < 1000
RPM.  It is OK at 1200 and up though.

Stus-List 35 MK III keel bolt plates

2020-04-25 Thread David Swensen via CnC-List
Thanks, Chuck and Alan. I had not planned on fully dropping the keel this
year. The boat is currently in Jamestown RI. I will be sailing her up to
Beverly, MA after she is launched. The mast is currently up,and I have been
quoted 500 each way to unstep and step. I was hoping to hold off until next
year to unstep. This year, I was planning on just grinding out the joint
(which I have already done) tightening the bolts with new plates/washers,
and fairing the joint with GFlex and fairing filler (303?). There is
currently 4200 or something similar in the keel hull joint. I am planning
to drop the mast next fall, and then fully assessing/addressing the mast
step. My surveyor thought the mast step was in good condition, although the
mast was up when surveyed. The boat, based on what I could tell by the C&C
plate in the back of the cockpit, was built in Niagara on the Lake. From
what I have read elsewhere, the mast steps from that facility were more
solidly than those built in RI. Should I also glass the joint and then
re-grind in the fall? Other comments? Safety issues?
Does anyone have the washer sizes?
Thanks.

Re: Stus-List 35 MK III keel bolt plates

2020-04-25 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
Welcome to the list, David. Where are you/your boat located? Here's how I
did the smile repair on my boat:

Dropped the keel. Flushed out the keel bolt holes. The forward bolt hole
(which was under the mast) had a void around it, and a terrible smell when
it was flushed out. The yard ground the surface of the keel and the stub,
filled the void with a gallon of epoxy (yes, a gallon), and epoxied the
keel to the stub. New washers were fabricated (large square stainless,
tapered so that the old washers and nuts would lay flat against the new
washers). The old washers were replaced with the newly fabricated washers,
and then placed on top of the new washers with the nuts torqued to spec.
Finally the smile was covered with fiberglass and epoxy. After more than
ten years, the smile hasn't returned, and I haven't had to torque the nuts
again.

Some members of the list used a flexible seal instead of epoxy between the
stub and the keel. I don't know how that worked for them. I'll be on my
boat this wee4k, and I'll try to take some pictures of the keel bolt
washers.

Be warned -the 35 MK III has a failure mode more complicated to fix than
adding new backing plates. A MK III owner can explain exactly what to
look for, you will want to check for that too.

Re: Stus-List 35 MK III

2017-08-01 Thread Sam Wheeler via CnC-List
I don't have much to add beyond what Jake said, but I bought a 35-III about
a year and a half ago and have been living aboard for a little over a
year. I love it.

Agree with Jake that you'll be reefing early and often, but as long as you
limit it to the appropriate amount of canvas it's a really nice, balanced
boat to sail. I've put plenty of people who are new to sailing on the helm
in relatively heavy breeze and watched them hold a nice upwind line. I've
also found it very comfortable to live on.

Highly recommend this boat if you can find one in good condition.

Survey tip: On mine, there were keel bolt spacers in the bilge that were
made of aluminum and had gone totally soft, to the point that the keel
could be pushed back and forth when the boat was hauled. I replaced those
with G10 and have had no problems since, but it was a big, expensive job
and something to watch out for.

Hi Eric,

If you are serious about a 35, check out my boat.
No issues, I plan to haul in late August (or
earlier if opportunity presents) to do regular
maintenance. I didn't put in the ad that the
bottom was prep'd and waterproofed, Intercoat
2000, with the boat out of the water for 8 months
many years ago. She shows no blisters at each haulout.

Richard — there are a few other lakes connected to Lake Michigan, if I recall
my geography correctly… :^)

One of the the largest dealers (if not the largest) of C&C's throughout much of
the 70’s and 80’s was Sailboats, Inc; they sold tons of C&C all over Lake
Michigan and more on Lake Superior.  You may want to look on Superior, as well;
not too bad a delivery. I’ve done it a few times.

Richard,

I am among one of the many 35-III owners on the list here. I love mine. It is
a bit tender, but sails to its rating and wins a lot of races. It is
comfortable to cruise with two, but I’ve also raced with 7 on-board in the
Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race (on “The Office”, another35-III sistership).

The boat is a little tender. You will be one of the first people to reef, but
it points well and sails like a C&C should.

Is anyone familiar with this boat, or have any comments based on the scant

Stus-List 35 mK III spinnaker to hit those polars

2016-09-22 Thread Tim Goodyear via CnC-List
All this talk of polars has reminded me that I have a spinnaker for a 35-3
in my cellar that will definitely help you hit those polar targets in light
air. This didn't go with the boat when we parted because they wanted to
stick with the PHRF NE recreational handicap. Please contact me off list
of you're interested (in the $1000+ range).

The spinnaker is essentially brand new, hoisted less than five times,
delivered to me in April 2015. It is a 0.5oz AirX (polyester not nylon)
North V Series S1.5 light air runner (VMG) and has an IRC certificate if
needed. It was amazing for the very short time I had it in Long Island
Sound, and more versatile than I expected (10-15 knots AWS / 70/75-160
degrees AWA).

Click here to see North Sails downwind sail selection / details

Thanks,

Tim
