Hi Dave,

I'm with you on this. I have an ancient breast drill, seldom used but
it's gotta be on the boat. Perhaps it's the only drill you can use underwater.

When it comes out for show & tell, I call it "my cordless drill".

Ok maybe this is a silly question, but what can a right angle grinder do that
the Fein multitool cannot? In other words why is the Fein second to the angle

functionality?

Yep, a vibrating saw is a valuable tool. I have the Dremel MultiMax corded
(the cordless ones don't have the oomph to get the job done). Can't beat it
for making plunge cuts and flush cuts. Also use it with a flexible caulk
removal blade for removing ports, hardware, etc. that is sealed with silicone,
polyurethane, polysulfide, etc.

However, my favorite all around go to tool is this:

Re: Stus-List Boat tools

2015-12-09 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
The angle grinder is a machete, the fein tool is a scalpel. That said,
it is amazing how "fine" you can be with an angle grinder. The angle
grinder can run big stiff twisted-brush scratch wheels and 30 grit abrasive
disks at high speed, it can remove steel fast, and with cut off wheels (zip
discs) can cut 1/4" steel with ease. It can grind through fiberglass and
bevel edges for repairs very quickly but with good control. With
fiberglass it makes a helluva mess because it can remove so much material
so quickly, and it launches the dust at high speeds. (wear a mask and
goggles.) The angle grinder is not at suited to finishing work. Too
aggressive. (that's for the random orbital sander)

The fein tool is for relatively fine work. it can cut soft metals but
does so slowly. It is great for fiberglass, but slow. it makes a very
thin kerf, so little dust, and because it is not rotating, the small amount
of dust does notmake a huge mess. it fits wehre a jigsaw can't and other
than cutting cuves it is incredibly controllable. It makes it really easy
to cut out sections of glass for installing instruments or whatever,
provided the lines are straight. The width of the circular blade makes it
track straight as well, so you can make precise straight cuts in awkward
confined spaces. It can reach and trim where other tools can't.Once
you have one you will find you keep finding uses for
it. (cutting drywall/sheetrock as an example) The forgoing is just for
cutting - the fein tool can also finish sand small areas in awkward spots,
and probably make martinis with the right attachments. (The angle grinder
would be a WMD - shred the olives spray gin everywhere.)

For hose clamps, it's a 5/16" nut driver. Can't imagine why anyone uses a
screwdriver on a hose clamp if they have a nut driver.

The other tool I use a lot is a 1/4 inch shank cone grinding stone for
making the chamfer on deck penetrations.

Every boat should have a cheap digital multi-meter on board.

The other electrical "thingie" for cruisers is a polarity tester. Yeah,
your breaker panel has a little reverse polarity light but what if it's
burned out? Get one of these:

Dennis,

My must-haves on the Enterprise are:

1. Stubby tool and wrench set —
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Stubby-Wrench-Socket-Set-45-Piece-012299/203499960?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7CG%7C0%7CG-BASE-PLA-D25T-HandTools%7C=CLmM15aHzckCFUSPHwodpGABdA=aw.ds
The only downside is it’s not stainless steel, so I have to replace it every
few years.

2. Max Axess Socket (hollow) Wrench Set —

3. Silicone Rescue Tape — http://www.rescuetape.com

4. Easy Wire Stripper —

Yep, a vibrating saw is a valuable tool. I have the Dremel MultiMax corded
(the cordless ones don't have the oomph to get the job done). Can't beat it
for making plunge cuts and flush cuts. Also use it with a flexible caulk
removal blade for removing ports, hardware, etc. that is sealed with silicone,
polyurethane, polysulfide, etc.

However, my favorite all around go to tool is this:
<http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-85035-35-MicroDriver-Set/dp/B0062FSAVI>

For hose clamps, it's a 5/16" nut driver. Can't imagine why anyone uses a
screwdriver on a hose clamp if they have a nut driver.

The other tool I use a lot is a 1/4 inch shank cone grinding stone for making
the chamfer on deck penetrations.

Every boat should have a cheap digital multi-meter on board.

The other electrical "thingie" for cruisers is a polarity tester. Yeah, your
breaker panel has a little reverse polarity light but what if it's burned out?
Get one of these:

I have a funky short ratcheted screwdriver with 4 heads (2 slotted
and 2 phillips) in the handle that is hinged in the middle. I end up
using it about 80% of the time for all sorts of stuff. It was one of
those things you see in the impulse buckets near the checkout at the
hardware store.

My Dewalt 20v lithium cordless drill and multitool are pretty cool too.

Re: Stus-List Boat tools

Dennis,

I agree with you that nut drivers are essential tools. I find I use the set on
the boat much more than I use the socket wrenches. I’m going to give myself a
set with a spring loaded shaft for Christmas, because I am constantly amazed at
how often the normal nut driver is just a bit too long, or there is something
just a skoosh in the way of getting a straight lineup on the nut being driven.

As I classic C owner, I nominate a set of Roberson screwdrivers (you know,
the ones with a square bit) as the most valuable tool.

And my other Christmas present to myself will be a good quality (likely Makita
or Bosch) 18 volt drill driver with 2 lithium batteries. Every cansarned time I
get out the drill on the boat, the NICad batteries are dead. That one is going
into the garage where a battery can be kept on the charger.

Re: Stus-List Boat tools

2015-12-08 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
I have a very cheap very compact Husky socket set in a plastic holder that has
a short 1/4 - 3/8 driver, a stubby adjustable, and a driver with various bits.
I keep it handy for when I just need to do something quick. I replace it every
now and then. If I have a real project, I get out my real tools. I carry far
more than I really should in the way of tools and spares but that's just force
of habit from being in some out of the way places where you have to rely on
your own resources. Like mid ocean.

Time for a discussion on our favorite boat tools Aside from the usual
collection of wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and locking pliers, what do you
find indispensable for boat work?

Dave said: "For cutting consider an oscillating tool like a Fein, with a
circular bimetal blade. (where has this thing been all my life???) This
is the boat repair guy's friend, second only to the angle grinder"

Yep, a vibrating saw is a valuable tool. I have the Dremel MultiMax corded
(the cordless ones don't have the oomph to get the job done). Can't beat it
for making plunge cuts and flush cuts. Also use it with a flexible caulk
removal blade for removing ports, hardware, etc. that is sealed with silicone,
polyurethane, polysulfide, etc.

However, my favorite all around go to tool is this:
<http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-85035-35-MicroDriver-Set/dp/B0062FSAVI>

Read
more...<http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-85035-35-MicroDriver-Set/dp/B0062FSAVI>

Get one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Gear-50542-3-Wire-Receptacle/dp/B002LZTKIA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1449604186=8-1=polarity+tester

What's your "must have" tool?

Ok maybe this is a silly question, but what can a right angle grinder do
that the Fein multitool cannot? In other words why is the Fein second to
the angle grinder, when it looks to me like the Fein is a superset of angle
grinder functionality?

Your boat is just too new, Josh. The boats built in Canada in the 70s have
HUNDREDS of flat head Roberson screws (if they haven’t gotten replaced with
Phillips oval head screws over the years).

I bought a set of 20V DeValt impact driver and drill, came with two
batteries and a charger from Home Depot when they were on sale. Very nice
and powerful. They are marginally better than the 18V ones.
I also have a Ryobi jigsaw with 2 batteries,. I also got a very powerful
searchlight that was working wiht the Ryobi batteries.
Nutdrivers end up to be too shallow for me most of the time, so I prefer
1/4 inch deep socket wrenches/ Allen wrench set is important for bimini and
dosger, as well as BBQ attachments.

On the other end of the spectrum I have a 1 inch socket for a 1.5 inch nut,
a 3/4 inch breaker bar and an adaptor from 3/4 in to 1 inch so I can deal
with my keel bolts.
Voltmeter, alligator clips, mirror, several vise grips a smaller and a
large adjustable wrench, 2 sizes of phillips and straight screwdrivers, a
good size leatherman, various knives.

LED headlamp.

Cordless drill *and* impact.

I spent the money on the Ancor crimp tool and wire stripper, they are
amazing. I don't know how I ever used anything else.

Moisture meter.

Wire brush thingy for the drill (for removing caulk, etc) - brass (I
think?).

Dennis,

My must-haves on the Enterprise are:

1. Stubby tool and wrench set
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Stubby-Wrench-Socket-Set-45-Piece-012299/203499960?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7CG%7C0%7CG-BASE-PLA-D25T-HandTools%7C=CLmM15aHzckCFUSPHwodpGABdA=aw.ds
The only downside is its not stainless steel, so I have to replace it
every few years.

2. Max Axess Socket (hollow) Wrench Set
http://www.kmart.com/19pc-universal-max-axess-socket-and-ratchet-set/p-010W003866977001P

3. Silicone Rescue Tape http://www.rescuetape.com

4. Easy Wire Stripper

5. Diagnostic TR580 Tricorner Mark VII

Yep, a vibrating saw is a valuable tool. I have the Dremel MultiMax corded
(the cordless ones don't have the oomph to get the job done). Can't beat it
for making plunge cuts and flush cuts. Also use it with a flexible caulk
removal blade for removing ports, hardware, etc. that is sealed with silicone,
polyurethane, polysulfide, etc.

However, my favorite all around go to tool is this:
<http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-85035-35-MicroDriver-Set/dp/B0062FSAVI>

Get one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Gear-50542-3-Wire-Receptacle/dp/B002LZTKIA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1449604186=8-1=polarity+tester

What's your "must have" tool?
