Second, thinking about being healed way over in 20 foot seas and coming down

Maybe that isn’t a thing on Lake Ontario?

This system is in place for airplanes. Be careful what you wish for, every
airplane owner dreads getting an AD that requires some ungodly expensive
repair at your expense or the airplane can sit as an expensive lawn ornament!

OTOH we get to find this stuff out the hard way, that is not ideal either.

Thanks, Martin – very Interesting. Do you have the “I-beam” fix drawing in pdf
format? If so, may I have a copy?

It has always been troubling to me that, unlike car manufacturers, boat
manufacturers do not alert boat owners about potentially dangerous issues upon
discovery. Case in point: my Dad’s Cal 33 suffered a crack in the aft end of
the keel (where it meets the hull) while being lifted from the cradle in the
early 80s. That boat has a proper bilge, and a crack at that location allowed
a significant amount of water in without being noticed. I crossed Lake Erie
with some college buddies shortly after the boat launched when the water temp
was about 55 degrees. We were in the middle of the Lake when we discovered
water above the floorboards. Had we gone down, we would have perished in about
a half hour (no boats around; no lifeboat on board). We were able to catch up
to the water infiltration and stay ahead of it using every pump on board until
we reached port. When we got the boat back to home port and hauled the boat
for repair, we learned that Bill Lapworth (the designer) already had a plan for
the fix. Evidently, our Cal 33 was not the first to experience this problem.
In my view, every Cal 33 owner should have been alerted to the issue once it
became known.

Matt,

Calypso also had some issues in the mast step area. Back in 1998 when we
brought her to Seattle we found some failed filler and reinforcement glass just
forward of the mast step. We ground out all the old polyester "bog" and
rebuilt the area with epoxy and glass cloth. We then designed and had
manufactured a new mast step.

Fast forward to around 2015 we purchased all the C&^C 43 "as built" drawings
available from the C archives at the Maritime Museum. One of those drawings
documented how the C/Bruckmann team discovered both the early 61's and 43's
had a weak point just forward of the mast step. A fix was designed for the
61's and 43's built after hull #1 or #2. The 61 SORCERY was retro fitted with
an "I" beam that went forward from the mast step about 10'.

During Calypso's restoration project we added "I" beams starting on each side
of the mast step running forward about 5' to reinforce the repairs we did back
in 98/99.

the recent project I commented on concerns the mast step. It was constructed

A benefit of the older 35s, as I recall, is that the hull is solid glass. No

2024-05-22 Thread Matthew Wolford via CnC-List

During Calypso's restoration project we added "I" beams starting on each side
of the mast step running forward about 5' to reinforce the repairs we did back
in 98/99.

I expect that the C design team, Bruckmann's, and the owners paying the
bills, on occasion, pushed the design/build envelope in pursuit of that elusive
extra 1/10 of a knot. I also expect that is why some of the survivors from the

against the “best fix” of replacing the mast step and spreading the load as
originally intended. Instead, we implemented a “good enough” fix of modifying
and reinstalling the original mast step and repairing/fortifying the damaged
middle stringer. This project and many others revealed that the Bruckmann shop
did a lot of things “on the fly,” like incorrectly positioning the rudder and
compensating with two different sized bronze rollers, installing drainage in
hull compartments that allows standing water, or using wrong size bolts that
were probably laying around the shop. It’s been a fun boat, but I’ve done many
repairs that revealed construction issues.

Any chance this 1970 35 was built at the Bruckmann custom shop? Some of the
details appear similar to the 70's era 43s.

The 43s were built with a teak veneer over the plywood bulkhead. Calypso's
(nee Arieto) original owner ordered the bulkheads to have white paint added
over the teak veneer. (one rumor held it was to better see mosquitoes)

Joe,

This must be a very early 35. It's listed as a 1970. I found what may be it
in the USCG vessel search under Vessel Number 527443 but no hull number is
shown.

It is quite different from any 35 I've ever seen. The cabinetry is very
different. There are no frames around the above seat storages or hanging
locker accesses. The bulkhead under the seats is wood, not fiberglass. The
port above the hanging locker is unusual. The one in the head is not. (Hull
61 has one of those.)

Dorades? Go figure.

being involved with the 39's maintenance and upgrades over 4 years. We have
owned the 43 for 25 years and completed a 10 year restoration project last year.

On the two Bruckmann built boats I have experience with I found the build
quality to be quite good. After touching almost every square foot of the 43
during the restoration the fit and finish seemed to be better than many
similarly marketed boats.

The 43's issues that needed attention during our restoration project were not
so bad given it was raced and sailed hard for 40 years. Even the British Navy,
back in +-1800 expected their ships to require significant work after only 18 -
24 months of service.

Joe,

This must be a very early 35. It's listed as a 1970. I found what may be it

Dorades? Go figure.

No wrap around seat backs.

The V-berth bureau drawers lack finger holes. The fiddles on the bureaus are
different.

The engine compartment appears to be wood. The inboard navstation bulkhead is
curved. The 45 angle on the inboard end of the navstation lift up is different.

The galley sink is rotated 90 degrees from Touche's. The head sink is
rectangular. Most are round.

No fiberglass step under the V-berth filler piece. Might have been removed?

Most of these differences look factory. I don't think they were owner
modifications.

I'm guessing this boat was one or two steps removed from the C 35 prototype.

David,

If you are looking to donate it, SailMaine https://www.sailmaine.org/ in
Portland could be interested in a donation https://www.sailmaine.org/. They
have a great kids sailing program and use adult sailing memberships on keel
boats to fund it. I race on their J/22 fleet and volunteer at Sail Maine.
They just added a J/35 to their fleet this summer so they might be
interested in another boat in that size range - I am not sure. Reach out on
the website or you can contact Ben Lewis who is their
adult program coordinator. What condition is your boat in and how is she
equipped? Is she in reasonable operating condition to be able to sail her
safely up to Maine? If so and if you want to donate her I can put a crew
together to sail her up in late June (earliest time that works in my
schedule) - you can let Ben know that I am offering to do that.

Looking for a little help on options. My job is being relocated to Europe over
the summer. As a result, I am looking to sell or donate my C 35-2, hull #207.

I reached out to Mass Maritime and one other place and received a “does not fit
our program” reply. Any suggestions are welcome. I need to get serious, as my
relocation has gone from a possibility to a reality over the last month.

I thought Deja Vu had sold recently since the ad for it had disappeared but apparently not.  The previous ad offered the trailer as an optional extra.  The pictures look pretty similar to the old ad.  The previous ad also stated that the boat was in Lake Lanier so not sure if it has moved to Delaware or if just the ad and maybe the owner are in Delaware. If it’s actually in Delaware that might be close enough that I could be tempted to go have a look. Cheers,Tom S Sent from Mail for Windows From: Joe Della Barba via CnC-ListSent: April 12, 2024 12:22 PMTo: Stus-ListCc: j...@dellabarba.comSubject: Stus-List C 34+ with trailer https://delaware.craigslist.org/bod/d/wilmington-1990-cc-34/7729712631.html I have to say this is the first time I have seen a boat this size with a trailer. Only thing is, I don't see anywhere in that ad where is says the trailer is
included - Maybe he is just showing it to show he can move it.

Stus-List Re: C 35 mk3 shaft line questions

2024-02-04 Thread s/v Prime Interest via CnC-List
I had a similar problem trying to remove the coupling on my LF38 and I even had
the benefit of good access to the coupling since it is a v-drive. Fluids, heat,
gear puller were not successful. After 2 days of work I decided to cut if off
which took only 20 minutes. I already had a new prop shaft and ordered a new
coupling too – as Nathan suggested I recommend a split coupling ( I ordered one
made by R ) – so wasn’t trying to save it in any case.

I would suggest even if you are successful in getting it off that you purchase
a new coupling if there any corrosion on the inside surface. A standard
coupling is not hugely expensive.

The interference fitting is pretty impressive – with the new shaft and new
split coupling sliding it on by hand was easy but I had to use the gear puller
to ease if off again. Similarly the face of the coupling vacuumed itself to the
transmission flange while aligning the shaft and had to knock if off with a
rubber hammer.

When I did this on my 34 I wasn't able to pull off the old coupler and had to
cut it off with a grinder. I replaced it with a split coupler that was machined
to fit the shaft but was relatively easy to get on before tightening the bolts
that clamp it to the shaft. Definitely recommend the spilt type coupler if you
get a replacement made.

Had my cutless bearing replaced by the yard last year as part of job to
rebuild Martec prop. Bearing at cost plus 1 hour labor. Perfect fit they
had the tools and experience. Worth every cent. Much less vibration.

Keith,

You are not overthinking this. You are correct that the coupler is a
designed interference fit. When I repowered our 38-2 I had a new coupler to
install, but getting it on the shaft was not possible with the tools I had.
You'd need a sledge hammer on the engine side and someone holding an anvil
against the prop. I opted to reuse the old coupler out of necessity. The
old one had a keyway and two 7/16" set screws. Not ideal but we now have
400 hours of motoring on it and have had no issues. I actually tried to
take it off last winter to check the packing material and it was so tight I
would've needed to remove the engine and use a puller to get it off. If
you're really worried about it, drill out your small set screws and tap
larger ones. You can put a lot clamping force on a 7/16" set screw.

 Cheers,

Riley

I think you are over thinking this. The OD of the hose is irrelevant. The OD
of the cutless bearing needs to be measured as struts can vary between models
and years. Best to get the cutless bearing that fits the strut, and that may
need to be measured to get that right.

At least the boat has a roll-up genoa now. As a single or short-handed cruiser,
I would never be taking either sail on or off, they would stay until I could
hire 4 guys to come move them. Even then, without electric winches that boat
would be a handful. The wheel location and submarine interior argue very hard
against selling the boat to a cruising family. I don’t get how you are supposed
to steer comfortably.

If I could afford it (hahaha), I would redo the cockpit layout and doghouse
cabin totally with a taller cabin, big ports to let some light in, and move the
wheel aft.

I once worked on a 90+ foot sloop that the owner would single-hand, it was a
really nice boat as long as the electric winches stayed working.

We have owned Corvette #149 for over 25 years. They are a great little boat
for a couple. The 3'-6" draught with the board up opens up a lot of
cruising options. However, the full keel does reduce manoeverability and
builds up some weather helm on a reach. Only the fore and side decks are
cored, so wet core is not an extensive problem, though it should be watched
for. The chain plate instalation should also be examined since the plywood
knees can absorb water. All Corvettes were built with Atomic Fours which
are a great little engine when well maintained, which some have not been
over the years. On the whole, she has been a great boat for us for a long
time.

Listers,

Happy new year!

I’m giving away my never-worn C Racing polo shirt, size XL.

On the front is the C logo with “RACING” underneath. On the back are the
nautical flags: Alpha Mike Foxtrot (You’ll have to look it up as to what that
means, but here’s a hint: C are so fast that your competition will see this
on your back as you pull away.)

Stus-List Re: C 37 Rudder post assembly

2023-12-11 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
For crying out loud, Richard, You've got to take some calipers to the boat
and measure the od of the threads, and take a rule and measure the threads
per inch, and the number per millimeter - C had both metric and inch on
these boats. Failing that, take some pictures and take the nut to a
machine shop. Did you get the picture I sent you of the top of my rudder?
Most bearing nuts will be in millimeters, as this
https://www.skf.com/group/products/rolling-bearings/accessories/lock-nuts/integral-locking
and the one shown here is not beefy enough for what you need.
Too bad I didn't keep my buddy's bent C Rudder.
