2011-06-05 Thread Tina Jones

My friend Rhonda Kelly and I went to Norma's Grove on 6/4 [Weld County]. The
grove of trees are just east of the intersection of county rd. 100 and county
rd. 57. In general, not much was there. Orchard Oriole was seen, several
Western-Wood Pewees, lot's of kingbirds, including eastern Kingbird. And a
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was hopping from tree to tree, and calling quite a bit.

1, Orchard Oriole was present, several Western-Wood Pewees, and many Kingbirds,
including Eastern Kingbird were also present. While driving to the grove in the
short grass and mid grass prairie, we saw many Lark Buntings displaying and
singing. Vesper Sparrows were displaying and singing also. A Red-headed
Woodpecker was perched on a fence pole.

It was a beautiful day to be out[not too hot or cold], and all the lark
Buntings displaying was spectacular.

Happy Birding!!

[cobirds] Ovenbirds, Douglas County

2011-06-05 Thread Allan Burns

This morning Theresa I had 3 singing Ovenbirds along the 5.5-mile Mountain
Top Loop Trail at Spruce Mountain Open Space. I predicted we would find at
least one, given the time of year that the habitat looked good, but I'm not
sure this was previously a known breeding spot for the species. A decent number
of other breeders were also present, including, e.g., Hammond's Flycatcher and
Green-tailed Towhee.

[cobirds] Western Gull - Chatfield SP - Dougco

2011-06-05 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,

The Western Gull continues at Chatfield as of 4 pm today.

Tammy hadn't seen it yet so after Barr Lake (nothing unusual) we went to
Chatfield and with all the people there getting that shoulder to shoulder
quality recreational experience I was sure the gull wouldn't be at the swim
beach or on the marina spit. I was right. There wasn't any room for him on
the spit as just about every square inch of sand was covered in humanity or
their boats.

From the spit we scoped east to what's left of the Plum Creek delta and the
Western Gull was on a small spit in the delta with several pelicans and
ring-billed gulls.

[cobirds] Shanahan Trail, Boulder Co., 6/5/11

2011-06-05 Thread Christian Nunes

Hello birders,
Two singing OVENBIRDS and a singing GRAY FLYCATCHER were the highlights of a
morning hiking around the Shanahan Trail system. Both Ovenbirds are up near
where the North and South Forks of the Shanahan Trail meet the Mesa Trail. The
Gray Flycatcher was found later in the day singing along the social trail that
goes right up the middle drainage between the two forks of the designated
trail.
We also found a RED-EYED VIREO along the Centential Trail. It was along the
ditch a few hundred yards west of South Boulder Creek.

[cobirds] Cassin's Sparrows, Boulder Co.

2011-06-05 Thread Christian Nunes

Birders,
I found 3 singing CASSIN'S SPARROWS along the Lefthand Trail yesterday, 6-4-11.
If one starts at the trailhead off Neva Rd, walk south until you get to the
wooden foot bridge a little ways south of the reservoir, near where the houses
end. Listen to the West. Some may remember that this is the same area where
they were found in 2009.

[cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk, Jeffco

2011-06-05 Thread migrant44
A quick walk around Welchester Tree Park (8th Ave. West of Simms) this
evening around 6:00 produced very little but the usual suspects, but
there was a broad-winged hawk working the west end of the park. And if
you are fond of the sound of magpies squabbling, this is the place for
you!

[cobirds] Hooded warbler, Pueblo

2011-06-05 Thread Rick Clawges
Tammy and I were awakened by a singing Hooded warbler this morning in the
Aberdeen section of Pueblo east of City Park. It sang from tall trees around
our house. I managed to get a brief glimpse of it. The rest of the time it
was just a loud voice. We did some early atlasing in a block west of Beulah
in the Wet Mts today. The bird was not heard in the afternoon when we
returned from that trip. The mts are very dry but still some good bird
action up there. Had a male Evening grosbeak singing from a snag. Our first
record of that species in our block. The other regulars were back, including
Hermit thrush singing its beautiful song from a snag. We'll keep an ear out
for the Hooded in case it sticks around the area.

[cobirds] Huerfano County: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Lewis's Woodpecker, Band-tailed Pigeons, Ruby-crowned and Golden-Crowned Kinglets

2011-06-05 Thread Polly Neldner
It was a great birding day in Huerfano County. Starting with the
Yellow-billed Cuckoo returning to be photographed. After a quick breakfast
we headed up to Spring Creek Trail head just above Cuchara, to search for
our nemesis bird of the moment...Golden-crowned Kinglet. While on the way
up we spotted a lone Lewis's Woodpecker...the first we have seen is 6 weeks.
Quite a change from seeing 6 or 7 daily! We listened to the recordings we
have of Golden-crowned Kinglet all the way up. Once we arrived we headed up
and soon heard our target. We located it and suddenly found ourselves with
Golden-crowned Kinglets on both sides of the trail! Further up we found 6
Band-tailed Pigeons, Hermit Thrushes and a Williamson's Sapsucker. There
were Warbling Vireos everywhere, House Wrens, Western Wood-Pewees,
Cordilleron Flycatchers and Dusky Flycatchers. On the way back down we found
ourselves surrounded, once again, by Golden-crowned Kinglets...only this
time there were Ruby-crowned Kinglets with them! All in all a great birding
morning!
The day ended the way it started with the Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling.

[cobirds] Fleming (Logan County)

2011-06-05 Thread elena
When going to Fleming this afternoon to pick up a puppy, I spent about 45
minutes at a ranch area with many cottonwood trees outside of town. Nothing
out of the expected, but it was wonderful to see a loud pair of nesting Red
Headed Woodpeckers, several very visible roosting Nighthawks (I thought they
were Common, but I could not see the pattern of white on the wings as they sat
on cottonwood branches, so I wasn't completely sure), many Lark Sparrows
singing loudly and openly, Western Kingbirds, Mourning Doves more numerous than
Eurasian Collared ones, Lark Buntings, Horned Larks, and a number of
wonderfully vocal Mockingbirds. One of them sang with such incredible fidelity
that at first I was fooled by its Blue Jay, until I saw it was the Mockingbird.
This bird then breezed through expert renditions of a Kestrel, Robin, Western
Kingbird, Cardinal, and some others, including its own improvisations. In
Mexico, the traditional name for Mockingbirds, translated from the Nahuatl
language is 200 voices- this guy certainly lived up to that name. It was a
great little oasis on the plains. -Elena K
