[cobirds] Sage Grouse plus the Grasslands this past weekend.

2016-05-12 Thread Dave Cameron
Deb and I had a few days off, so went for two birding locations, with three new
birds in mind. We got four. Nice to have modest aspirations.

The 26 Road Lek (or more precisely, the 26B Road), was absolutely incredible.
There were some rolling hills in the way of seeing everything, but there were
easily 50 or 60 displaying male Greater Sage Grouse. There seemed to be ONE
female. Birds on both sides of the road, in the road, etc. Quite the
experience.

The road from the wildlife area SE of Walden across the sage to the East was a
sea of grease. Even newish all-terrain tires on a Jeep barely got us through.

Phase two was the Pawnee Grasslands, target-- Longspurs. We spent the first
evening hiking North out of Crow Valley Campground, where we camped two nights
(it's VERY wet, and rising, out there right now). Highlights around that area
were Northern Waterthrush, Brown Thrashers, Bullock's Oriole, RC Kinglet,
Willow Fly, Cinnamon Teal (and scads of Blue-winged), Yellow-headed Blackbirds,
many Snipe in flight display, an American Redstart, Yellow and Yellow-rumped
Warblers, Sora (heard), Red-bellied Woodpecker (heard), Swainson's Thrush,
Yellow-shafted Flicker, etc. We were told of, but did not find, an Ovenbird.

Tuesday we drove Road 96, where we found several very cooperative McCowns
Longspurs, to Road 69 to the North, where we found some decidedly less
cooperative but nonetheless numerous Chestnut-collard Longspurs. Among many
other expected prairie birds. Mission accomplished.

[cobirds] birds

2016-05-12 Thread Marcia E. Wade, Attorney at Law
Hi - I am a new member and wanted to report bird sightings. If this is not
where I am supposed to send
information, could you please send this to the proper person? Thank you.

On May 27, there were the following birds in the pond across the street
from Stearns Lake around 1 p.m.:
several pairs of northern shovelers, one snowy egret (last Friday there
were six); six long-billed dowitchers,
and an avocet. In the bushes there were a loggerhead shrike, and a
yellow-rumped warbler

At Lake Wanaka (in Greenlee naturalized area) there were several avocets, a
pair of cinnamon teals, green-winged
teals, four pairs of wood ducks, belted kingfisher (male), several
killdeer and a few blue-winged teals. There is also
a Swainson's hawk nest between the main lake and the naturalized area. If
anyone wants to see the wood ducks (they
are gorgeous) do it soon because after the reeds grow out the wood ducks
rarely come out of them.

On 95th Street where the Boulder Creek goes under it I got some good pix of
a beautiful osprey. I think it has a nest out
there but I could not find it. I also saw bald eagles flying past.

On Weld County Rd 19-1/2 I found a wild turkey feeding in someone's field.

Hi - I am a new member and am not sure this is how to submit bird
sightings, so
if this is not where to send them, please forward this to the appropriate
person. On

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Green Heron, Semipalmated Plover

2016-05-12 Thread Polly Neldner
My ever faithful birding buddy pup (Scooter) and I ventured out to Lathrop
State Park this morning in hopes of finding something new.
At the wetlands trail we found a Green Heron. It was calling, the marks the 7th
year in a row I have seen them at Lathrop.
The big surprise was an adorable Semipalmated Plover (the first I have seen at
the park in three years) in amongst 6 Spotted Sandpiper on some small rocks
directly across from the large group camping area.

Pictures can be seen on the CFO Facebook page.

Very disturbing to see was the spraying of pesticides on the imported sand at
the swim beach area. They did put up small flags warning people to stay off the
sandbut as we all know...birds, reptiles, butterflies etc. cannot
readgrrr!

Re: [cobirds] Re: Immature Cooper's or Sharpie? - Larimer

2016-05-12 Thread David Suddjian
Some raptors nest early (Great Honed Owl, for example), but many begin in
spring proper, and some are still in the early stages of nesting now.
Accipiters may fall mostly in the latter category; I think this is the
prime season for incubation. It is too early for a fledgling from this year
to be out and about, I think. Generally they are still incubating.

For the Cooper's Hawk it takes two years to reach an adult type plumage,
and sometimes nesting pairs are seen with one member that is not yet in an
adult plumage...i.e., not an adult. I've never seen pairs with both as
immatures, but maybe that happens, too.

Re: [cobirds] Glossy Ibis , El Paso County

2016-05-12 Thread melgoff
I agree with John about the parking where the Ibis are. I was there this a.m.
and parked near the pond and walked down the road. I had to set my scope up on
the south side of the road by the one large tree in order to stay out of the
traffic lanes. The road on both sides drops off and you cannot set up a scope
on the north side and still be off the road.

Be careful if you go to that spot!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5/12/16

2016-05-12 Thread meredith . mcburney
Slow day..did not make me sorry that we would be closed the next two
days, but looking forward to being back on Sunday with hopefully more birds!

Here's today's 15 new captures:

Least Flycatcher 1 (Bob Righter, this is the one that you taped!)
House Wren 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Spotted Towhee 2
Chipping Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Red-winged Blackbird 4
Brown-headed Cowbird 1
House Finch 1

Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14 (that
is this Friday and Saturday) and 30. It is almost always better to visit
early in the morning. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have
birds back at the station by 7:15. There are school groups every weekday,
arriving about 9:45. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is
very hot, very cold, or very windy.

2016-05-12 Thread Steve Brown
Hey COBirders,

It was a little slower at Clear Spring Ranch banding today, but there were a
couple of good arrivals.

First, I banded a second-year Hammond's Flycatcher today, my first Empid of the
season here.
Then, the Northern Waterthrush banded yesterday was re-captured late in the
morning. The hunting must be favorable, as he'd put on 5% weight since
yesterday!

Otherwise, more yellowthroats, Lincoln' Sparrows, catbirds, and several RW
Blackbirds today.

Have a birdy weekend,

[cobirds] Northern Parula & Green Heron - Marjorie Perry NP (Arapahoe)

2016-05-12 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning began with two new yard birds -- a male *Black-headed Grosbeak*
(FOS also) and a small flock of *Pine Siskin*. Both took one look at my
empty platform feeder and left. I took these new visitors as a sign that
good things were yet to come and took my dog for a walk at Marjorie Perry
Nature Preserve in Greenwood Village.

On the eastern edge of the preserve, where the High Line Canal bends around
the preserve, we inspected a pewee that yesterday sounded enough like an
Eastern to justify a second look. Today, the pewee sounded just like it
should.

Near the *Western Wood-Pewee *was a very vocal *Northern Parula*. A
*MacGillivray's
Warbler* and my first *Plumbeous Vireo* of the season were also nearby. (At
least I think it was a Plumbeous. My photos [on my eBird checklist below]
show just a bit of yellowish-green wash, but not enough too make me think
it was a Cassin's. If you think otherwise, let me know.) This edge of the
preserve has been a joy to bird lately. I've seen all of the preserve's
warblers in this area, the pewee, a Dusky Flycatcher, a Lincoln's Sparrow,
and the Red-headed Woopecker that recently visited. Today, a *Virginia Rail*
called
from the reeds nearby while I watched the vireo and parula.

I then stopped by the easternmost lake. I saw a long, heron-shaped bird fly
into a tree over the lake. It appeared streaked and brown as it came
through. Still reeling from the parula, I began thinking things I shouldn't
(bittern, bittern, bittern?). But I found a *Black-crowned Night Heron*
where the bittern should have been. It was an adult, so neither brown nor
streaked. Don't know how I saw it otherwise.

Beneath the Night Heron, however, was a small heron jousting with a trio of
*Common
Grackles*. Unfortunately, the grackles held their territory and the *Green
Heron* flew to the far edge of the lake, eventually disappearing from
sight. When I began birding in 2012 in New Hampshire, this was among the
very first birds I encountered (with help from a more experienced birder).
I've been smitten with it since then, but, until today, I've only seen it
when I've traveled back east to visit family. Another one of those
favorites from back east was the Eastern Phoebe. It's been a treat to get
to see both this spring, so close to home. I expect the third bird that
impressed me during that first, brief month birding in New Hampshire will
soon also show up at Marjorie Perry's east lake. Can't wait to see a Common
Eider diving alongside while a Gadwall paddles by!

When I arrived home, a male *Lazuli Bunting *made a brief appearance in my
yard.

searching for Boreal Owls for two nights in the San Juans. It is a bird I am
dying to see, so any information or suggestions on finding them in this
mountain range or tips on finding them during this time frame would be highly
appreciated. I do understand that it may come with a bit of a challenge, as
the end of May is when the time frame that they are more likely to be calling
is closing.

For something fun for my birding this year, I've been working on a North
American Owl Big Year and I have a goal of seeing all of North America's 19 owl
species. So far I have 17 of them, and Boreal is the only one I haven't seen
overall. The year has been very fun so far, and any help would be highly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good Birding,

Tommy DeBardeleben (Glendale, Arizona)
