[cobirds] Sandwich Tern record at Manitou Lake 27 -30 June 2013
CO birders : There is an excellent article by David Sibley on Sandwich Tern identification in North American Birds volume 74 number 1 2023 which identifies the Manitou Lake bird as being of the European subspecies Thalasseus sandvincensis.Currently AOU and Clements do not split Sandwich Tern into separate species but other authorities do such as BOU . David's article “European “ Sandwich Tern details in great detail the plumage differences between the American and European subspecies , checked my photos of the Manitou Lake bird and matches nearly all of the criteria for the European .Using these new ID criteria , a number of records of Sandwich Tern in other states are now of the European subspecies. Does the CO Rare Bird Committeee want the Manitou bird records to be resubmitted Cheers John Drummond Colorado Springs Sent from the all new AOL app for iOS -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] A report on Guanella Pass BBS route June 22, sign of the (bad) times?
My Tarryall BBS route (Park County ) was also well down in species this year 54 versus the usual 65 to 68 .Waterbirds , shorebirds were about normal , but missing were many ponderosa , spice/ fir species .So no sapsuckers,Hammond’s flycatcher , Townsends Solitaire , Cassin’s Finch ,Evening Grosbeak, Red Crossbill ,Hermit Thrush ,nuthatches , Mountain Chickadee just one Olive-sided Flycatcher. Spruce/ fir forest showed increasing beatle dieback . Survey run on June 15 . John Drummond Colorado Springs Sent from the all new AOL app for iOS On Friday, June 25, 2021, 11:49 AM, David Suddjian wrote: One of my Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes is Guanella Pass, beginning above Georgetown in Clear Creek and proceeding along the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway over the pass and down to Grant in Park County, and then up Park CR 60 to its end in the upper watershed of the North Fork of the South Platte. BBS routes have 50 stops along a 24.5 mile route, with 3 minute samples collected at each stop once each year. I ran the Guanella Pass BBS route on June 22 this year, normal timing, with good weather conditions. It was the easiest ever because there were so few birds! The total species I detected was just 29, the lowest ever for the route and down from the 5 year avg of 46 species. The total number of individual birds was just 127, the lowest ever for the route, just 33% of the 5 year avg of 387 individuals. I detected no species at all on10 stops. It is highly unusual to record zero species during a 3 min. BBS sample when weather conditions are reasonable. In fact, barring stops with really loud water noise, I have never had zeros on a BBS stop, but 10 on this survey?! 19 Species that are expected on the route (i.e., found in 3-5 of the last 5 years) were missed entirely. A number of these misses are species which were found in every year in recent history, such as Dusky Flycatcher, Steller's Jay, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Bluebird, Townesend's Solitaire, Pine Siskin, and Song Sparrow. Of the 29 species found, 15 species were found in numbers 50% or less than the recent 5-year avg. This included all of the species that form the core of the species assemblage of the route except for Warbling Vireo and Wilson's Warbler, which were the only core migrant species in near average numbers this year. Spruce-fir forest and the alpine tundra near the Pass were the habitats that were the most empty of bird song. ** A summary of missed species and those in low numbers is pasted below. I haven't looked in detail at my other routes, but of the 4 others I've aready run all had notable low counts of many landbirds and more than the normal frequency of "missing" species. Re: [cobirds] Joe Roller sad news
Sad news indeed , we will miss him. Joe adopted me when I first arrived in Colorado in 2006 and quickly got me involved with CFO , DFO and the birding community and enjoyed many birding trips with him throughout Colorado as well as sharing rooms on birding trips to Sri-Lanka , Ecuador and Bolivia .Always had a sense of humor no matter how poor the birding was or the weather . He will be missed . John DrummondColorado Springs. -Original Message- From: Larry Modesitt To: Colorado Birds Sent: Wed, Nov 25, 2020 3:45 pm Subject: [cobirds] Joe Roller sad news Cobirders,The very sad news is that Joe died last night of cancer just after midnight. His wife Maryanne said that despite his pain, he was still cracking jokes with the nurses yesterday morning. “He made me laugh every single day,” she said. Either one of their boys, Dan and Tom, was always able to be with him for the past month. I was out running with my dog when Joe corralled us decades ago. That’s how I became one of many people Joe introduced to birding. That led to us birding together all over Colorado and the world. Joe’s love of teaching folks about birds, almost always with a humorous insight, continued through his illness. He was a valuable contributor to Denver Field Ornithologists, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Colorado Field Ornithologists, and the medical community. There has never been anyone like Joe Roller, and he will be missed greatly. We can believe that last night just after midnight, St. Peter laughed harder than he had all year.Larry ModesittArvada-- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Aaron : I have not heard of any confirmation from outside of CO gull experts to confirm either , but the Glaucous-winged looks more likely to me , I am very uncertain about the Slaty-backed .Nick Komar has been wrong in previous years . Any way I will be traveling up with Lynne Miller tomorrow to check the gulls out , not that I need either for my state list but Lynne needs Slaty-backed .I think we will arrive around 10:30 .Perhaps we will see you there . Re: [cobirds] White-winged Scoter split
Velvet Scoter ( M. nigra ) was split from White-winged ( M.deglandi ) last year by Cornell ebird . Velvet Scoter distribution is Eurasia wide with the proviso that IOC have further split the eastern form of Velvet ( M. nigra ) to Siberian ( Stejneger's ) Scoter ( M.stenjergeri ) , distribution Siberia wintering Japan , China and it is this Velvet Scoter subspecies that has been recorded in Alaska , male Velvet Scoter's differ from White-winged in different bill shape and size and blackish flanks not brownish . I haven't checked to see whether any Velvet Scoters from Europe have been retroactively accepted on the East Coast . Very good photos or description for White-winged Scoter's would be necessary to consider a Velvet here in Colorado. Would that be something the CBRC would review if that were the case? Ebird is calling the ones I've reported before as Melanitta deglandi. Fwd: [cobirds] Adult ICELAND GULL at Cherry Creek SP Marina - now!
CO Birders : On further examination of my photos there was in addition to the adult Iceland Gull , an adult Glaucous Gull in close proximity about the same time so those birders who came after our MAMBO group left beware . The adult all white gull that we were looking at from the end of the pier and photographing was the adult Glaucous Gull not Iceland . CO birders : The Eastern Meadowlarks ( Lilian's ) were seen again today , an adult and two juveniles from the Mcintosh Lake Trail somewhat more north central than the usual north western location . Spotting scopes essential . The juveniles occasionally hopped up to a post but the adult only allowed brief views walking in longer grass . The juveniles appeared to be begging for food but we saw no feeding activity by the adult . For the adult we observed the white malar and in flight 4 white outer tail feathers each side of the tail and a photo of one of a juveniles again shows the 4 white outer tail feathers ( my thoughts here the offspring might be hybrids ) . [cobirds] Two Stub-tailed Wrens along Canyon City Riverwalk.
CO birders : Mid afternoon I found two stub-tailed wrens along the Canyon City Riverwalk starting from the western parking lot at Raynolds Avenue . The first by sight and call was a Winter Wren on the left side of the path just around the first bench . A second wren was heard , not seen about 150 yards on left beyond the 3/4 mile marker about 5 minutes later which gave the Pacific Wren call as on my on my I-phone . So I think that there are probably at least two wrens in this locality as these two sightings/hearings were separated by at least 300 yards. [cobirds] Fwd: Pueblo County Today.
Wrong address , resending -Original Message- From: John D To: cobirds Sent: Thu, Jun 12, 2014 4:58 pm Subject: Pueblo County Today. CO birders : I carried out my first BBS route today ably assisted by Patricia H in Pueblo County ( Doyle Bridge ) east of Pueblo City . Highlights were Eastern Phoebe at the Doyle Road ( CR 321 ) bridge over the Huerfano River and that unlike last year the cholla grasslands were green with up to 20 Cassin's Sparrows recorded compared to just one last year. Returning via Pueblo Mountain Park at Beulah , we observed a female Acorn Woodpecker feeding young in the dead pine near the Horseshoe Lodge ( same location as last year ) and a singing male Grace's Warbler with a second probable female in the tall ponderosa pines half a mile up the hill from the old tennis/basketball court ( same location as two years ago ) . It tends to sing from the very top of the pines , recognize its song to locate this bird as I think that it will stay for the season. John Drummond Monument -Original Message- From: 'John D' via Colorado Birds To: cobirds Sent: Sat, May 17, 2014 3:04 pm Subject: [cobirds] Prothonatory Warbler , Fountain Creek ( El Paso ) CO birders : Bill Maynard found a Prothonotary Warbler earlier this afternoon at the northern end of Fountain Creek Park , near mile marker 18 ( where the Woodcock was seen earlier this year ) . A small stream runs close to the path and the bird is often seen alongside the stream with several Northern Waterthrushes . There is a hatch of small insects which is attracting multiple Yellow-rumped and Yellow Warblers , so don't be fooled by the Yellow Warblers which have a subtly different song to PROW .
