[cobirds] Last two weeks of June

2023-12-28 Thread Gary Brower
Cobirders,

If you were going to head either east or west in the last two weeks of June,
which direction would you go to bird: Western Slope or Eastern Plains?

I know it will probably be hot in either area, but that is the best time I have
to be away from the mountatins.

So: NW Corner of the state, Roan Plateau, Grand Mesa, Umcompaghre Plateau,
Mesa Verde, Pagosa Springs?

Or: Trinidad, La Junta, Lamar Limon, Wray, Sterling, Pawnee Buttes, Greeley?

I’ll be headed to the mountains in July/August; I’m really interested in the
other two major areas of the state.

Thoughts? Votes?

Thanks,

Gary Brower

[cobirds] 4th Annual Labor Day Circum-Lake-ation

2023-08-26 Thread Gary Brower
All,

Once again, I’ll be birding around Cherry Creek Reservoir on Labor Day
(September 4). I’ll start at the Tower Loop at about 6:30am and will work
clockwise around the Lake. We have generally finished around 2:00 - 2:30. The
entire walk is about 12 miles. As in the past, I hope to have someone meet us
at the 12-mile Lot who can ferry folks back to the Tower Loop, should they
decide not to do the whole circuit.

There are a couple of challenges this year, as a result of the flooding that
affected the park. First, the road that connects the east and west sides of
Cherry Creek State Park is still cut, so entry to the park (i.e., to get the
Tower Loop) must be from the Parker Road (i.e., east) entrance. Second, we will
cross Cherry Creek at the far south end of the park—but that’s the point of
“no-return”, as the east-west cross-park trails are closed between that
southern-most bridge and the face of the dam.

The current weather forecast is for high temps in the mid-to-upper 80’s . . . a
lot cooler than last year!

If you have any questions, let me know!

[cobirds] ID help

2023-02-27 Thread Gary Brower
Friends,

I was birding this afternoon on the Big Dry Creek Trail (in Centennial, CO
—Arapahoe County). And I’m stumped.

Into a tree flew two birds. One clearly a House Finch (red head and all). The
other was similarly-sized, but with no red. What it did have, however, was a
V-shaped set of feathers on its (back) — i.e., from the upper parts of each
folded wing, with the “tip” of the “v” just above there rump. Again, house
finch sized; finch bill. If not for the white pattern, I would have just called
it a female house finch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwing Question

2023-02-01 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders,

Since I already “have” BOWA on my Arapahoe county eBird list, I no longer get
alerts about sightings. I only saw one a couple of weeks ago, and I’d love to
see more (and often eBird reports can give me that information).

What’s the best way to query eBird for single species information in one
county? I’ve poked around the “Explore” tab, but can’t seem to get it right.

And, thanks for all the great BOWA conversation the last few days; it’s been
great!

[cobirds] Labor Day Cherry Creek SP birding

2022-09-03 Thread Gary Brower
Oops — To be clear . . . I’m talking about meeting at 12-Mile NORTH, accessed
from E. Lake View Road, near where the road crosses Cherry Creek.

-

Fellow birders!

For the last couple of years, I’ve gone on an unofficial walk around Cherry
Creek Reservoir. This year, I will cut the “circum-lake-ation” short (for
reasons having nothing to do with the birds).

But, should anyone desire to join me in birding the East Side of the lake, from
Tower Loop to 12-Mile (including the Swim Beach, Pelican Point, and Shop
Creek), I’d love to have company.

My suggestion is that we meet at 12-Mile (parking just inside the entrance) at
6:15. From there, we’ll carpool to Tower Loop and start the walk. When we’re
done at 12-Mile, there should be a ride for anyone who needs a lift back to
Lake Loop.

Sorry for the late notice/reminder, but life has gotten in the way of the birds
this year.

I look forward to it! My cellphone is 303-501-6659

[cobirds] ID help/suggestions?

2022-05-29 Thread Gary Brower
COBirders,

This afternoon I was at the “Bird Observation Platform” at Cherry Creek SP
(Prairie Loop).

Out on one of the sandbars was a lone bird working the waterline. Plover/Robin
sized. Dark (black/gray, not brown) head and back. Distinctive white
supercilium. White chin/upper breast, with bold streaking further down the
breast. Black legs and bill (short-medium length).

I do not carry a camera (other than my phone), and there was no way I could get
a good picture with my phone. When I got home, and started looking through my
NatGeo 7th, the closest things I could find was Western Sandpiper. I’m not
accustomed to them being here this early.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: [cobirds] ID help

2021-09-28 Thread Gary Brower
Thanks to all for the ID help.

I’ll stick with Virginia’s Warbler. My main reason for doubting (and asking
for help) was eBird’s flagging it as “Rare”.

the other suggestions folks have made didn’t quite fit. Kinglet didn’t have
the yellow wash that I saw so clearly. Yellow-rumps didn’t have the complete
eye-ring, and the breast on my bird had no streaking. Pine Warbler is even
trickier.

Any way thanks for all of your help!

[cobirds] ID help

2021-09-27 Thread Gary Brower
Friends,

I know this is a challenge, but I could use some help. Here’s the
description of a bird I saw this morning in Cherry Creek SP, semi-near
Cherry Creek HS:

Warbler shaped/sized. White eye-ring. Pale yellow wash on throat, and
extending down each side of the breast.. Fluttering in top of tree. Some
wing-barring. Chest was buff-colored.

In looking through field guides, I ruled out vireos. Not a sparrow,
clearly. The closest thing (by picture) was Virginia’s Warbler…..but I
highly doubt that!

Suggestions?

Thanks!

[cobirds] 2021 Circum-Lake-Cation results

2021-09-06 Thread Gary Brower
COBirders!

A huge debt of thanks to Quinn Pack (who walked the whole thing with me again —
he say’s “Next year there will be T-Shirts!"), Jayne and George James (who were
part of the walk from Pelican Point to a bit past Shop Creek), my wife (at
12-mile Trail), and a bevy of birders/photographers at Pelican Point (all of
whose names I can’t remember, so I won’t try)!

The 12-mile walk (7-1/2 hours) around the lake netted 59 species. Considerably
down from the prox 70 last year! Quinn and I talked a lot about how “odd” was
this year for birds. But there were some goodies: Tennessee Warbler, Sora
(SEEN, not just heard!), Franklin’s Gull and Forster’s Tern were, for me, fun
to see. Tennessee Warbler was a life bird!

In the non-birding category, we saw a bat (!) working the area just south of
road, near the turn-off to "12-mile Picnic Area/Dog park” and a coyote in the
“prairie”-like area along Cherry Creek Trail south of the Shooting Range,

I was bummed to learn that Black Tern had been seen just before we arrived at
Pelican Point, and again about 1/2 hour after we left. Such is birding! On the
other hand, we got to see another kind of bird — a war-bird — as one of the
last operative B-17 bombers was making its annual visit to Centennial Airport.

BTW, it was 59 degrees when we left Tower Loop, and 91 degrees when we got back
— much like last year. And the Park was no-where near as crowded this year
last.

Put Labor Day, 2022 on your calendars now (well, I know, Labor Day 2022 IS
already on your calendars . . . . but the Circum-Lake-Cation needs to be there
too!!

[cobirds] Labor Day Circum-Lake-ation (again)

2021-09-04 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning, birders!

Just a reminder that I’ll be birding around Cherry Creek Reservoir on Monday,
should anyone choose to join me. If things are like last year, I’ll probably
hit Pelican Point between 8:30 and 9:00, and 12-mile around 10:00.

---

Some of you may recall that, last year, I decided I would bird my way all the
way 'round Cherry Creek Reservoir on Labor Day. Several folks joined me for
some or all of that walk. We tallied over 70 species.

I’m going to do it again this year (Monday, September 6). I will leave the Lake
Loop about 6:30 (as I did last year), and go clockwise around the lake,
including the 12-mile Trail (which means heading north on the Cherry Creek
Trail and/or the Railroad Bed Trail).

My experience this year in birding Cherry Creek State Park has been that the
number of both species and individuals has been “down”. I wonder if that will
be borne out on Labor Day as well!

Let me know if you’re interested in joining in. That way we can share contact
information for specific segment meet-ups.

Good birding!

Re: [cobirds] Magpie Flyby - west Centennial near Holly & Arapahoe, Arapahoe County

2021-08-25 Thread Gary Brower
As I have been doing my daily walks around Cherry Creek State Park (the west
side), I’ve seen large flocks of magpies as well. Last week there was a flock
of about 25 on the ground. This morning, there were two flocks flying over —
each with about 30-40 birds.

I don’t remember seeing that last year, for sure!

[cobirds] Labor Day Circum-Lake-ation (again)

2021-08-22 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon, friends!

[cobirds] Loggerhead Shrike

2021-08-13 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders,

How nice, after living and birding in Colorado for 14+ years to get a State
Life Bird without going out and looking for one that’s been reported!

On my morning walk through Cherry Creek State Park, I stumbled upon a
Loggerhead Shrike sitting calmly atop a mullen. For anyone interested, it was
on the inside corner area where Belleview turns into Peoria, about 100 yards
north of the Boat Storage Yard.

Good birding!

It would make sense that to communicate with Merlin, one would “tweet”. . .

Re: [cobirds] Sound ID

2021-07-10 Thread Gary Brower
Thanks, Jeff.

I used Bird Net too, before Merlin. I agree about Merlin’s interface being a
lot more user-friendly.I wasn’t sure how to do the upload, though, so your
email was helpful.

BirdNet says Dark-Eyed Junco, with Chipping Sparrow second, and Flammulated Owl
third. I’ll go with DEJU!

Interesting, that BirdNet was (is?) associated with Cornell, too . . . and that
they’d give such different results!

[cobirds] Sound ID

2021-07-09 Thread Gary Brower
COBirders,

Yesterday, I participated in David Hallock’s Indian Peaks Breeding Bird Count.
My “area” was the Woodland Lake Trail (accessed from Hessie Trailhead, near
Nederland). I kept hearing a bird that I couldn’t quite identify. It didn’t
sound quite like a Chipping Sparrow or Dark-eyed Junco, so I thought I’d try
the new Merlin Bird Sound app (which is amazing, I must say). Without
hesitation, or providing any other suggestions, it identified the sound/bird as
a Pine Warbler. Since eBird designates that bird as “rare”, I don’t want to
say that that’s what it was, solely on the basis of the call.

I have a recording that I’m happy to share, if someone would like to help me
(and Merlin) make the right (pardon the pun) “call”.

Thanks so much!

To those CoBirders that have “influence” with eBird — is this something that
is/should be reflected there? I’m not making an issue — just raising a

[cobirds] Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park

2021-05-21 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders,

A week ago, several birders recorded Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park (via
eBird). Unless you had alerts set for Arapahoe County or Colorado, you may not
have seen the reports.

I went out this morning and found at least one (although some of the prior
reports reported more). The individual I saw was just east (50 feet or so) of
the Lone Tree Pond at the south-west end of the park. It was perched on some
mullen in a patch of rabbit bush. It was clearly a bobolink — gold patch on the
back of the neck and upper shoulders, white on the wings. Much smaller than the
numerous red-winged blackbirds and grackles (including Great-tailed). (This
area is near where the Dickcissels were found last year, but to the south by
several hundred yards).

According to eBird, bobolinks are “rare” in the park, having been reported in
only four individual weeks in the last 10 years (the second and third weeks of
May, and the second and fourth in June).

Happy birding!

Steve,

Thanks. All I find is the whole checklist for the ABA area. Is there a
tab/menu that allows for state lists?

Re: [cobirds] Woodpecker drumming

2021-04-24 Thread Gary Brower
Diana and David,

Thanks so much. I think that, tomorrow (assuming I hear it again), I’ll record
it. And then I can slow it down and count the beats. At my age, I can’t
distinguish between 16 and 23 beats/sec. ;-)

I have a bunch of vocal flickers around, so I imagine it was one of them. But
there are some Downys in my ‘hood as well—I just hear the less frequently.

I’m sitting on my deck this morning, and listening to a woodpecker drum. I

Is there a distinctive drum for either of these birds?

[cobirds] Mexican Duck at Cherry Creek SP?

COBirders,

No, this isn’t a report of a sighting, but a follow-up to the bird that was

[cobirds] Swamp Sparrow - ARAPAHOE County?

2021-01-08 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon, COBirders,

I was out this afternoon, getting in some “looks” before the weather begins to
change tomorrow.

I was fortunate to run into some folks who helped guide me to the Swamp
Sparrow(s) south of C-470 at the “beaver dam”. (I missed the Rusty Blackbirds
. . . .)

Especially in that area of the S. Platte, one can be in three counties on one
eBird list if one isn’t careful. So, when I got home, I did some VERY detailed
map-gazing and found that that beaver pond/oxbow area of Marcy Gulch is in
Douglas County. (I would have preferred Arapahoe — just sayin’.)

So, I’m wondering if there have been sightings of the SWSP elsewhere in
ARAPAHOE County (including north of C-470)? Especially in that area of the S.
Platte, one can be in three counties on one eBird list if one isn’t careful.

Thanks!

[cobirds] ID Suggestions

2020-09-26 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon, friends!

i was out in Cherry Creek SP, just across Belleview from the “neighborhoods” —
Prairie Dog Town. I thought I saw what looked like a Says Phoebe fly to the
top of a low bush. It was almost immediately joined by another — definitely NOT
SAPH. This one was had a pretty gray breast/chest, with a darkish head, and
bluish back/wings. And then when it flew, its blue rump was quite apparent.

Given size (i.e., Says Phoebe) and overall shape (it was more “svelte” then
plump), I thought bunting, but INBUs are pretty rare (according to EBird). It
had no wing bars, which seems to rule out BLGR. Simliarly, it had no
rusty/orange anywhere, ruling out EABL or WEBL (neither of which gets much
EBird love).

Any chance they could have been a Mountain Bluebirds — how often are they seen
down here — EBird suggests “infrequent” and “unreported”.

Thanks so much!

Re: [cobirds] Migration notes from NM

2020-09-13 Thread Gary Brower
I don’t know if this qualifies (i.e., it’s not about songbirds), but . . .

I regularly bird a small pond on the west edge of Cherry Creek SP. Like many,
it has shrunk like crazy over the last couple of months. But that didn’t seem
to phase the 20+ mallards that seemed to call it home (along with 3 or 4
killdeer, 2 domestic geese, and the occasional BCNH, GBHU, and SNEG).

I went by there a week ago today, and all was “normal” (in terms of the bird
population). The next time I went by—Wednesday, the 9th—at least half of the
mallards were dead, as were both domestic geese. The killdeer continued to work
the mudflats.

Of course, what had happened between last Sunday and Wednesday was the “big
chill and snow”. But would that have killed so many waterfowl? The other pond
I regularly check had no similar fatalities (although today there was NO bird
life whatsoever — even though yesterday there were a handful of ducks).

Just seems strange to me . . .

[cobirds] Sound ID help?

2020-09-12 Thread Gary Brower
COBirders,

While birding a neighborhood right across Belleview Ave. from Cherry Creek SP,
I had a brief sighting of a medium-sized flycatcher-ish bird. Plain, light
colored breast, gray-green back. Couldn’t catch a glimpse of wing-bars or any
thing.

It shot from some eaves of a house into a nearby tree, where it disappeared.
It chattered a bit in flight, and very clearly called “(Quick) Three Beers” —
except without the “Quick”. I waited to see if it would call again, but no luck
(it may have flown on and I didn’t see it). It didn’t look dark enough to be a
OSFL.

Any ideas? Thanks!

[cobirds] Big Lake Day redux

2020-09-07 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon, COBirders!

What a fun day walking around Cherry Creek State Park! I’m so grateful for ALL
who joined in for all, or part, of the walk: Quinn, Dwayne, Cinnamon (who came
up from CO Sprgs), Colleen, Joey, Ken, and Susan. And, of course, we bumped
into a bunch of other birdy people along the way

Quinn, Dwayne, Cinnamon and I started at Tower Loop at 6:30a: temperature -
50º. Quinn and I ended at Tower Loop at 2:45p: temp - 91º. We ran into Joey at
the Swim Beach, and again at 12-mile (where he put us onto a Hammond’s
Flycatcher). Colleen and Susan (dear spouse) joined the merry band at 12-mile.
Ken joined in for a while, too, at 12-mile. Folks peeled off as their
schedules (or bodies) demanded.

The overall route took us south from the Tower Loop, along the lake to Pelican
Point, then “overland” (via the Shop Creek Trail, with some bush-whacking) to
the 12-mile Trail, continuing south to the bridge over Cherry Creek, and then
north along the creek. Onto the Cherry Creek Trail until the Cottonwood Creek
Wetlands, then on lakeside trails ’til the Marina. Finishing with the dam trail.

By the numbers (at least for ME . . .):

Logistics:
11.86 miles
8 hrs, 10 mins

Total Birds on the day: 73

Birds (for my lists):
1 Colorado Bird:
Pectoral Sandpiper
8 Arapahoe County Birds:
Pectoral Sandpiper (duh!)
Wilson’s Warbler (30+)
Peregrine Falcon
Bairds Sandpiper (2)
Lark Bunting (3)
Hammonds Flycatcher
Rock Wren (4)

Other (semi-)notable birds:
Lincolns Sparrow
Bald Eagle
Forster's Tern
Ruddy Ducks (a cool flock that kept us busy trying to identifying them)
Yellow-headed blackbirds — a bunch at the Swim Beach area
Northern Shoveler
Osprey
Sage Thrasher
Virginia Rail
Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay
Lark Bunting
Eastern Kingbird
Rock Wren (4)
Savannah Sparrow (4 or so)

Unfortunate "misses” (since 75 would’ve been a nice round number):
Townsends Warbler
Spotted Sandpiper
Rock Pigeon (!)

Again, thanks to all who joined me on my “folly”! It was suggested that this
become an annual event. I’m game!

Sore legs, and all . . . .

[cobirds] Big Lake Day

2020-09-04 Thread Gary Brower
Good evening birders,

As I wrote some weeks ago, it’s been my plan to bird around Cherry Creek Rsvr
on Monday (Labor Day). That plan is a “go.” And I’m so grateful to everyone
who provided suggestions! They were so helpful!

My plan, therefore, is to start at Tower Loop around 0615 (sunrise is 0637),
and head clockwise around the lake, checking Dixon Grove, Swim Beach and
Pelican Point. (I’m not going to bird the campground.) I will include a walk
down the 12-mile trail (I’ll see how I’m doing time-wise to determine whether
I’ll cross Cherry Creek and come down the paved trail). I’ll then head down the
west side of the lake, keeping as close to the water as possible. Going by the
West Shades will probably be quick, as it’ll be busy. Then to the Marina and
across the front of the dam back to the car.

I’m hoping to arrive at the 12-mile trail area about 0930 (and meet my wife
there for that portion). That’s the only semi-certain time point.

Again, there’s no official “intent” to this. It’s just my way of spending Labor
Day. But if anyone would like to tag along, I’ll be wearing my mask!

Thanks!

[cobirds] Mockingbird in CCSP - update

2020-08-15 Thread Gary Brower
Slight emendation:

eBird doesn’t show NOMO having been seen inside the park in August (or
September) over the last 10 years. There are some scattered reports in the data
base since 1900 in different months (or more than 10 years ago for September),
but still never for August.

Striving for accuracy!

Gary

Friends,

I saw, what I’m fairly sure was, a Northern Mockingbird late this morning in at
the prairie-dog town on the west side of Peoria — the Vista Trail (across from
the Cottonwood Creek wetlands). While my eBird checklist wouldn’t indicate it,
it was within Cherry Creek State Park.

eBird shows NOMO as “infrequent” in the area, and the bar chart for Arapahoe
County shows that. But I don’t see any records for Cherry Creek State Park!

Of course, there have been a couple of other NOMO sightings in the county in
the last couple of days!

Surprising!

Re: [cobirds] Big Lake Day

2020-08-10 Thread Gary Brower
Thanks Ben!

I wasn’t really thinking about it (originally) as a “Big Day” — mostly just a
way to spend a whole day in one location, albeit with a variety of habitats.

I’ve had a couple of other suggestions very similar to yours — in terms of
where to start.

I’ll post more as we get closer.

[cobirds] Big Lake Day

2020-08-09 Thread Gary Brower
COBirders (especially those who bird Cherry Creek SP with any regularity),

One side benefit of the COVID-enforced “stay-closer-to-home” edicts has been
that I’ve spent HOURS birding—while walking dear daughter’s dog—a little patch
of Cherry Creek State Park (around the corner where Belleview turns into
Peoria). Yes, I’ve forayed into other areas of the park (previously unknown) .
. . to great benefit. Yay — Dickcissel!

And, I’ve met some wonderful birders since March!

I’ve decided that I would like to bird AROUND the lake — yes, walk all of the
way around the lake! And I’ve chosen to do it on Labor Day; it may become an
annual “event”. And I would like your help!

First, my plan is to walk around the lake (which means that the far south end
of the park isn’t on the itinerary — not so sure about Butterfly Hill). The
question is, in order to maximize the number of species seen, where to start,
and in which direction to go (clockwise or counter-clockwise), Sunrise on 9/7
is at 0633. What might that suggest (i.e., regarding owls)?

Second, I may take a “side trip” — either towards the dog park, or down the
railroad trail. I’ll probably wait to see what appears on eBird for those two
areas . . . but, given any absence of timely data from those “hotspots”, which
might be the most productive?

Third, when I have the starting point identified (with start-time), and the
direction plotted, I’d LOVE to have anyone join me! If there are enough
“takers”, we could shared cell-phone info, and coordinate meeting along the way.

All this said, I am not trying to make this an “official” thing — either with
DFO or Denver Audubon or anything else. I’ll do it regardless. Other silly
people may choose to join in!

Any help/suggestions/comments/critiques are welcome!

Thanks!

Re: [cobirds] Printing eBird data?

2020-08-04 Thread Gary Brower
Diana,

Thanks. Problem previously solved (see a later email).

Since the total print job was about 11 pages, and the bar charts don’t easily
lend themselves to screenshots, that wasn’t workable.

[cobirds] Printing eBird data?

2020-08-04 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders. . .

(Especially those with great knowledge of eBird!)

I’m trying to print a collection of bar charts from eBird. But all I am able
to print is the name of the bird 9and the two little icons to the right of the
species name). The bar charts themselves do not print.

Does anyone know what’s going on, and how to get around it? I’ve tried saving
it to pdf, and that doesn’t work either. The only thing that has worked has
been taking screen shots . . . but that’s incredibly tedious.

Thanks so much.

All,

A follow-up on this. I received several suggestions to call Leica. I did so

The only down-side is that I have black binos, and the eyecups are green . . .

Thanks Hugh, for confirming that I’m not an outlier!

The other thing this underlines is the “helpfulness” of using more specific
hotspots (like Cherry Creek SP - Railroad Bed). And for putting more specific

I’m not saying something new . . . just reiterating what we’ve been discussing

[cobirds] eBird question

2020-07-18 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning!

I have an eBird question, the answer to which I can’t find on their website.

Is it possible to aggregated hotspots for a report. In other words, there are
multiple hotspots associated with Cherry Creek State Park (including the park
itself being a hotspot). Is it possible to select ALL of those hotspots to

[cobirds] Durango, end of month?

2020-07-18 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning, COBirders,

Dear spouse and I will be in Durango at the end of the month (staying a bit
north of town, near Hermosa). I’ve looked at the eBird data, but I’m wondering
if locals can suggest one of the “hot-spots” over another? We can easily travel
down-town, or further up into the mountains.

Thanks so much!

Several folks have reported (on EBird) that they’ve seen Grasshopper Sparrow on

Thanks to you all. I didn’t know the difference between “Sport-Dog Training

well, as I ride my bike on that road all the time. I guess I’d never seen the

[cobirds] CCSP Dog Training Area?

2020-06-20 Thread Gary Brower
Friends,

In the reports about the Scissor-tailed Fly Catcher, there are references to a
“Dog-Training Gate” or area off the Railroad Bed near the Shooting Range. Can
someone explain this to me? My understanding is that the only off-leash area in
the park is the designated one on the southeast “corner” by Orchard and Parker.
Otherwise the regulations are that dogs are leashed at all times. If that’s the
case, what does “Dog-training Gate” imply?

Wow,

Following all of these posts makes me wonder whether there’s someone (not me)
who — as happened some months ago with a different property — who can approach
the REAL owner (whether its DIA or someone else) and get a definitive answer.
Is this a DFO issue? Or something like that?

It would seem that the “right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing”.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker, CCSP, Arapahoe County

2020-05-22 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning, birders!

This morning (about 9:15), just north of the intersection of Belleview and
Havana, in the “wetlandsy-creekbed” I found a lovely Red-headed woodpecker!
Very conveniently clinging to a snag on the top of a dead tree. I was able to
get very good looks at it (I don’t carry a camera).

Nice to get an unexpected State/County bird!

Earlier, down near the Cottonwood Creek pond (the one near the wild-life
overlook), but downstream from the pond, I had a very striking Eastern Kingbird
working the liminal zone between some willows and the meadows.

Surprises await!

[cobirds] Sandpiper behavior?

2020-05-02 Thread Gary Brower
All,

This morning I was at CCSP Swim Beach and saw a couple of smallish calidrid
sandpipers. They both seemed to pump their tails a lot. I don’t remember
that kind of behavior (I really just don’t remember — it’s been a long time
since I’ve seen some!)

Is that characteristic of calidrids in general, or of just one species? Or
were they just trying to maintain their balance?

Thanks!

2020-03-30 Thread Gary Brower
I, personally, see no need to suspend the forum. We can use it for other,
totally-appropriate, bird-related things, than the RBA.

For example, someone the other day wondered about presence of GBHEs in their
“area”. Over the last two days in my “area” —Cherry Creek SP—I’ve seen
(perhaps) three: at least two, plus another single (which may have been one of
the two). I doubt anyone here is going to “chase” a GBHE, but some folks might
be interested in keeping track of their appearance.

Re: [cobirds] Interpretation of state-wide Public Health Order

2020-03-29 Thread Gary Brower
Read all the way through the article. It is aimed at DENVER residents. Here’s
the appropriate sentence (from the article, anyway)— the next-to-last
“paragraph”:

You might be thinking, “Well hold on a second, Gov. Jared Polis said hiking was
fine!” Unfortunately for Denver residents, the stricter restrictions are what
apply, so in this particular case, the city and county order trumps the
statewide order.

The State’s order (under “Definitions”) reads:

3. Engaging in outdoor activity, such as, by way of example and without
limitation,
walking, hiking, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, biking or running. For purposes of
outdoor activity, State parks will remain open to the public to engage in
walking,
hiking, biking, running, and similar outdoor activities but all playgrounds,
picnic
areas, other similar areas conducive to public gathering, and attended areas
shall
be closed. Additionally, the permitted outdoor activities in this PHO do not
include activities that would violate the Social Distancing Requirements

If there is another, more authoritative, ruling (than “TheKnow”), I’ll be
welcome to hear/read it. In the meantime, I’ll stick with Polis’ order, not
Hancock’s. But, the state’s order replaces both Boulder County’s, as well as
the Ti-County Health Department’s orders.

As someone who lives (almost) right next door to CCSP, I can say that there are
ospreys around almost all the time. If there’s any seasonality to their

[cobirds] Ani update

2019-09-14 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon,

The Ani was seen by about 1/2 dozen folks around 1:30 this afternoon. It was
east of the pedestrian/trail bridge, about 1/4 mile upstream, on the north side
of the stream. It was perched near the trunk of a tree, very unperturbed. It
would drop down occasionally, and then back into the tree. Vocalizing every so
often.

[cobirds] Virginia Rail at CCSP?

2019-07-17 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning,

I’ve seen almost daily eBird reports of a VIRA at Cherry Creek State Park, but
no particulars as to WHERE that bird (or those birds) are observed. The park is
big, with numerous possible locations. Can someone who HAS observed it/them
help narrow it down?

Thanks!

Re: [cobirds] Re: Mexican Duck marina at Cherry Creek SP (Arapahoe county(

2019-01-15 Thread Gary Brower
All,

Several questions, then, for those who know about (or consider) these things .
. . .

1) Was Mexican Duck made a separate species in the last go-around? I can’t
remember. If so, then it’s Life Bird for me — I’ll head to CCSP tomorrow.
2) If it’s a Mottled Duck, it’s a Life Bird for me — I’ll head to CCSP
tomorrow.
3) If it’s a Mottled x Mexican hybrid . . . . how does one “count” that?

Thanks!

[cobirds] Craning for Cranes

2018-10-10 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders,

With all of the recent posts regarding Sandhills, I was wondering if there were
a “reliable” place in Arapahoe/Douglas counties where one might find the
cranes? Most of the posts I’ve seen have been “incidental” — i.e.,
seeing/hearing them overhead. I’m just curious as to whether there’s a place
they like to "set down” before Monte Vista?

Thanks!

[cobirds] Birding the Front Range tomorrow

2018-01-14 Thread Gary Brower
Good evening, all,

With tomorrow being a holiday, my guess is that there will be numerous birders
our looking for some of our current Front Range “finds”. I know my wife and I
will be doing so.

The weather forecast, however, for tomorrow isn’t as “pleasant” as today (snow
showers starting in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo in the morning).

Can I ask/suggest that those of us who are out looking for these great birds
keep a close look at COBirds (and post updates). It’s going to be a somewhat
tricky travel day, and the more information we have at the better (and safer).

Thanks!

[cobirds] SNOW?

2017-11-30 Thread Gary Brower
All,

I forgot to ask, has anyone seen the Snowy Owl in the last few days? The last
reported sighting (on the RBA) is 11/25. But has anyone gone looking and come
up short?

Thanks again,

Gary Brower

[cobirds] Two questions

2017-11-30 Thread Gary Brower
Good evening, bird-folk,

I’m looking towards a “less-work-busy” December, and am trying to decide on
CBCs. I’m also trying to nail down some “usual” suspects (i.e., birds I
haven’t seen but aren’t THAT unusual in Colorado).

So, I’m hoping y’all can help.

I’ve searched the CBC sites, but can’t seem to find the individual count circle
reports. All I find is the summaries, which, while interesting, record unusual
species. I’d like some site that showed ALL the species for individual count
circles. Does such a thing exist?

Aside from that, is there a “dependable” place to find Evening Grosbeak? I
grew seeing them in Oregon, but haven’t seen one since I started keeping track
(in 1984).

Thanks!
