[cobirds] Early Sandhill Crane, Boulder County
Actually, over the line in the northwest corner of Union Reservoir on the mud flats. One solo, hanging out with a half thousand Can/Cacks. Why bother traveling to south Colorado? Also, the Bald Eagle pair on Hygiene Road west of Longmont are carrying sticks in to repair the nest. LOVE by Valentine's Day? [cobirds] White Pelican, Weld County
Went to the Firestone Gravel Pits in search of the White-fronted Goose seen yesterday. [cobirds] stearns lake, boulder(?) county
In addition to the ducks/gulls/geese that you would expect, there was a harbinger - a Western Meadowlark singing lustily from a fence post. A couple of red-winged blackbirds were singing, but their hearts weren't in it, although one female red wing was taking an interestI also got to see a mature bald eagle cruise over and dive on a target in the weeds. [cobirds] Floyd Playa in play, Boulder County
Visited the new wetlands (109th and Boulder Creek) today, and in addition to the Willets, Avocets and a few ducks, the place was loaded with a couple hundred WF Ibises, all loading up for the journey north. North side of Union Reservoir - 18 of the big beauties seen, trying to stay sheltered under the bank while feeding. At least two groups, and there were probably more that I couldn't see. [cobirds] jim hamm park, longmont, Boulder County
That fine stop for migrating ducks is currently being cleaned out of a few year's accumulation of muck. Absolutely dry, and will continue to be dry for a month. The excavating machines may affect the migrating songbirds in the neighboring woods as well. Parking is still available. The other migrating stopover, Union Reservoir, is drained down so it is about a quarter mile from shore viewing points. No luck on the kites of Glenmere, but the egrets and night herons are entertaining and learning how to fish. Stopped by Lower Latham on the way back - place is totally dry and has been for a month. Did have a Prairie Falcon flyover just south. Union Res - both Western and Clark's Grebes, couple dozen Pelicans dipping in the NW corner, plentiful Killdeer, and the first migrant Lesser Y-Legs of my fall season. [cobirds] central weld county
In pursuit of shorebirds and after checking a few local places in Boulder County (nuttin...) I wended northwards. Lower Latham: irrigation on and water flowing, the marsh is filling up and the mudflats are ready, but only a half dozen short-billed dowitchers (looking good in the fresh feathers), a single willet, and then a flock of 20 or so Least Sandpipers flew in, doing that Every body turn left.NOW thingie. Crow Valley: White-Crowned Sparrows, Yellow Rumped Warblers (Myrtle's this time) and a ton of Robins and A Goldfinches. [cobirds] East of Longmont, Boulder County
Jim Hamm on Monday afternoon had a good assortment - my FOY green wing teal, greater (and a lesser) yellowlegs, long bill dowitcher, avocets. There was a Bonaparte's Gull (still in winter plumage) mixed in with the ring bills for variety, but I saw one of those last week. Union Reservoir had a Harlan's Hawk sitting on one of the masts at the sailing club. A pair of Red-Tails are sitting on their nest just east of Ish Reservoir. And for the local Longmontites, an osprey is back on the pole at the fairgrounds. The local bald eagle pair should be hatching any day if my calendar is close to right. [cobirds] northern Boulder County
Took the afternoon off to go birding after working in the garden(s) Union Res - usual stuff: coots, W/C/pie-billed grebes, Ish - few coots MacIntosh - horned and eared grebes hanging out together, then a Bonaparte's gull drifted by. Couple of lingering pelicans. Clover Basin - totally empty! Lagerman - here's where the 2 Pacific Loons moved to, with my first Common Mergansers of the fall. Boulder Res - lot of human activity and only distant birds. Walden - full of ducks: lot of Widgeon, ring-necked, red-heads. 2 lingering yellowlegs on the far shore(the only shorebirds of the day), one juv song sparrow. Union Res: flock of a couple dozen Lark Sparrows north of the road - NW corner near the little farm drain pond. When I came out of the Longmont ACE hardware about 11 this morning, there was an adult Swainson's cruising low and slow over the parking lot, riding the thermals off the blacktop, obviously in a hunting mode. I guess the rest of the Longmont birders have to assist in looking at the city parks on the north end of town to see if they've set up housekeeping in the city. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. 4 major flocks of male yellow head blackbirds (50, 100, 200, 200) all hanging out together on the north side of Union Res. The local yellow headed have staked out territories on the northwest corner and the northeast corner. Last year, they were in the center north, but that area is toast from burning, then covered with water. No shoreline visible, so look elsewhere for shorebirds. [cobirds] Around Longmont
The rookeries are all still going strong, blue herons are on the nest; the egrets have shown up in the last couple of days at the St Vrain SP and taken most of the remaining empty nests (about 20). Highland Lake and Ish Reservoir have been filled so much that the shoreline trees are 5 feet deep - shoreline is non-existent for migrants, so seek elsewhere. Union Reservoir is also full to the brim, but did contain both grebes (about half Clark's), pelicans, lotsa coots, and the first pair of blue wing teal of the spring, looking good in their fresh feathers. [cobirds] Weld county ramble
Starting with Highland Lake (a mile north of Meade) - 3 third year Bald Eagles soaring and sitting in the trees, a couple of Cal gulls. On Sunday, we watched an adult Bald Eagle snatch a couple of floaters off the surface and carry them up to a branch to eat. I suggest that since Union, Ish, Cottonwood and most of the other local rest stops are short of beaches that Highland Lake may prove to be a hotbed of shorebirds in a month or so. Today featured the first 3 pelicans of the season, fully decked in breeding finery and looking kinda skinny. Up to Lower Latham for a spring check. MM (mostly mallards, very skittish) plus a few stray shovelers and canvasbacks and a lone meadowlark. Three Harriers flying low on the southeast corner, then two of them doing some mating soaring. [cobirds] Larimer County Monday
Decided to wend up north to finally check out the Ft Collins bird sites. Started with the new ponds recommended by Gary Lefko and found.. 6 Canucks, 2 mallards, and my first grackle of 2010! Must be a slow day. Off to Grandview Cemetery. Corner of Section 9 is very flickery today (and robiny too), but the male white wing pops out of the tree for a solid 10 second look and flies off north. East to LaFarge area on Drake. Lots of ducks, but nothing cool until I catch a glint of black/white behind grasses, and they promptly fly off. Looked like loons? Follow them down the ditch, and it's just a pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes. J.D.(Birch) Birchmeier -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds. [cobirds] A time for love in Boulder County
On a nice Monday, decided to roam around the county and do a couple of Hawkwatch routes on the way. Up to Allenspark – no rosy finches, but both chickadees, no nuthatches, Stellar's, Magpie, Hairy Woodpecker, and a stray Northern Shrike a quarter mile east of the FawnBrook. The North Rabbit Mountain Hawk Route had a pair of Red Tails sitting affectionately in the same tree on 75th Street, then I pulled up behind another car of birders south of Rabbit Mountain that had just watched another pair of Red Tails copulating. The male (rather than smoking a cigarette or ordering a dozen roses for Valentine's Day) hopped down a few branches, broke off a nice midsize branch, then flew off east. The female followed after a minute. Off to the optional Union Reservoir circuit – a pair of Bald Eagles sitting beside each other in a tree at the south west corner. Around the reservoir to the northwest corner, where I saw a male Harrier carrying a small prey (vole?) land. The female then flew in carrying some cattails in one foot, grabbed the prey, and flew off. The male followed. This was a nice experience! [cobirds] Fawnbrook Inn, Boulder County
Visited the Fawnbrook in Allenspark today 12/29 around noon. 2 gray, 1 brown rosy finches in the top of a tree when I arrived. Messed around looking at both chickadees, a downy, a hairy for awhile - then a mixed flock of a half dozen black rosies and 20+ browns arrived and nervously kept flushing from the feeder on the roof / flying around / relanding, etc. J.D.Birchmeier (Birch) Longmont, CO -- Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
