[cobirds] Re: Yard list questions: How many of CO's 520 species have been seen (or heard) from a yard?

2024-03-14 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Hey Thomas and all. A fun exercise for us dedicated yard watchers.
28 years of watching
163 species currently
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
Long-eared Owl
Black throated Sparrow
Bobolink
Long-billed Curlew

We own our property south of Monte Vista and not far from the Refuge. Our
backyard BIG DAY is 38 species.

We now add one just every few years. Latest were 2 Blue jays.

Lots of fun to look back!

[cobirds] Crane Festival Approaches

2024-03-04 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
The Monte Vista Crane Festival is March 8-10 and the cranes have arrived
for their special performance. I am still surveying the Refuge to see where
the birds might be hanging out and their patterns. The turnouts along Hwy
15 are still good bets. The ice is off the auto tour loop ponds, which now
have a nice assortment of ducks like Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Ring-nkd Ducks,
and Canvasback. About 3,000 Cackling Geese were along the tour route with
one white goose. Some of the crane resting areas are far from observable
areas but watch for morning and evening feeding times and you should see
many birds aloft.
Be safe out there and enjoy the Festival. See some of you Friday for the
birdwalk at Home Lake.

[cobirds] Other MVNWR Birds

2024-02-24 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
With the thousands of cranes showing up, there are other birds showing up
on the open water areas as well.

Six Greater White-fronted Geese, Cacklers, Canada and a single Snow Goose
were present on the first pond on your left on the auto tour loop. Redhead,
GW Teal, Pintails, Mallards, and Bald Eagles are around too.

Each day will bring a new array!

[cobirds] Water and Birds at Monte Vista

2024-02-23 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Hey all. It is always amazing when the Monte Refuge turns on the water. It
seems the birds spring out of the grassy sod overnight! So as water is
spread about, the birds have shown up with a few thousand cranes, Canada
and Cackling Geese, Pintail, Mallard and GW teal.

At least one Great Horned Owl is on nest.

Nice to see the cranes return as always!

[cobirds] Cranes are Rocking and Rolling Overhead

2024-02-16 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Mid day seems to be the time that many migrating birds arrive in Monte
Vista from Bosque. I figure if they lift off around 8:00 ish and have
decent tail wind, they will arrive at Monte Vista a few hours later. So
today, mid day, the skies are alive with croaks and whistles as birds in
the stratosphere seem to be circling downward for this next stop.
Quite exhilarating.

A non crane question for the group. I thought I heard that Clark's Grebe
and Western have been combined. Is that true?

[cobirds] Cranes Start Arriving

2024-02-11 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Greetings. Just a heads up that Sandhill Cranes are starting to arrive as
of this past week. This is pretty much on schedule. The water at the Monte
Refuge should be turned on soon, and then the birds will be concentrating
there. Right now they are scattered.

We have had some Cranes winter here, which is a tad unusual. A few Virginia
Rails and Marsh Wrens around warm water seep are also interesting. A
Bittern was very unusual with our mostly-frozen conditions. It too hangs
around seeps.

Our friend Susan Hochstetler, the lady who fed hundreds of Rosy-finches
each day and was a delight to so many visitors, has moved away. I have yet
to find a reliable replacement location for folks to see these birds.

See ya at the Crane Festival.

[cobirds] Black Vulture Update

2023-12-23 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
The Black Vulture is still present and I saw it today 12/23 at 2:30 pm in
the same location. To see it, go to Del Norte and find the junction of CR
14 and Hwy 160. From here go 5.0 miles up Pinos Creek and watch for the
bird on the fence. Today it was on the deer carcass and then flew up to the
fence. It is very predictable right now. But, I do think this bird is ill.
It has lost a lot of breast feathers and is very approachable. I am
wondering if lead poisoning might be a factor. Hoping the best for this
bird and see it if you can.

[cobirds] Passing of a Friend

2023-10-21 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of our friend and
long-time birder Jerry Poe, formerly of Monte Vista. He passed away
peaceably with his family in Sandy Utah yesterday. Jerry was an avid birder
and worked as a Range Conservationist for the US Forest Service. Jerry had
a strong conservation ethic and did a tremendous job in watershed
protection throughout his career. He was part of many of our bird
adventures over the years and especially loved the weekend birding trips to
SE Colorado. Farewell to a good man and wonderful friend.

[cobirds] Monte Vista Cranes are Spread Out

2023-10-18 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Greetings all. Trying to get caught up after spending a few recent weeks in
Brazil's Pantanal doing birding and photography. Came back to find I had 2
weeks of jury duty, so I am feeling a bit behind schedule at this point.

But did want to mention that the Cranes are back in the San Luis Valley.
Today I toured the Monte Vista Refuge and found them in small, scattered
groups. This is very typical of fall arrivals, and it is quite different
than the massive, concentrated flocks of the spring migration. However, the
fall foliage is still outstanding in the Valley cottonwoods so birds in
unique settings can be seen and photographed.

Best locations after doing the MVNWR is to drive the nearby county roads
and check out the harvested grain fields. The Gunbarrel (Hwy 15) at the 9S
had good numbers recently too. Stanley Road is often good. Driving around
Mosca can be productive as well.

Enjoy the season!

Been riding my bike at the Monte Refuge and stopping often to listen for
the characteristic clicking of the Yellow Rail. But no luck so far...just
Wilson's Snipe still winnowing, Marsh Wren, Sora and other marsh birds.
With as expansive as those wetlands are, the birds could easily be in a

My friend John Stump and I birded the Costilla hotspots and had a nice

[cobirds] Amazing Alamosa

2023-05-25 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
It seems a flood of birds are coming in as the floodwaters of the Rio
Grande are spreading over the fields, pastures, roads and wetlands. Today,
on the State Street Bridge levee walk, there was the about the 8th SLV
record of Black-throated Blue Warbler (*male) for our area lazily feeding
20 feet ahead. What a gorgeous bird and one I had not seen for over 20
years. Managed to get some pics of this fantastic, and nervous bird. Other
birds in the area were Black-headed and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Yellow,
Yellow-rumped and Virginia Warblers, Cordilleran Flycatcher, and a quick
look at what appeared to be Blue-headed Vireo.

So if you are in the neighborhood, go to State Street bridge and park on
the south side of the river on the west side of the road. BTBL was right at
the parking lot as of noon today. I was glad a few others got to see this
bird...BTW Malm Trail is flooded so bring boots!

[cobirds] Chestnut-sided Warbler and more SLV Highlites

2023-05-23 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
An estimated 53,200 birds migrated over Rio Grande County last night
(BirdCast) so I ventured to the Del Norte Riverwalk to see if I could find
a few of them. It did not disappoint with a male Chestnut-sided warbler and
female Rose-breasted Grosbeak among all the other colorful birds. A Black
Phoebe was also seen nearby.

In the past week, A Common Loon at Stabilization SWA, White-winged Dove on
the Malm Trail, two different late Snow Geese (Russell Lakes and Sanchez)
and a Northern Waterthrush near Saguache.

Enjoy the migration while it is ON!

[cobirds] Piping Plover at Smith Reservoir and Results of Big Day San Luis Valley

2023-05-18 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com

A team of five of us did a full day of birding for our annual Big Day event
in the San Luis Valley on May 17th. The team consisted of Lisa Gail, Lisa
Rawinski, Jake Myers, Randy Ghormley and myself and we hoped to break the
record of 153 species. We began at the Monte Vista Refuge and immediately
got lucky to find a Palm Warbler, one of few records for our area. In the
mountains we found Lewis’s Woodpecker, Golden Eagle, and MacGillivray’s
Warbler, but were missing many of the “should gets”.

On to Smith reservoir where we were surprised to find the first SLV First
Record of Piping Plover. Upon later review of eBird, we saw that Mark
Peterson and another had seen it a day earlier, but we found it independent
of that info. It was very exciting for sure. The reservoir also produced
Blue Grosbeak and Clay-colored Sparrow, 13 Stilt Sandpipers and an
estimated 400 Black Terns.

When the day grew long, we called it good. Our day list stood at 130
species and we all felt elated over the fantastic birds we had seen.

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant at Smith SWA

2023-05-04 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Action is really picking up in the San Luis Valley.

At Smith Res SWA there was a Neotropic Cormorant, posed on a rock not 100
feet from a much larger Double-crested Cormorant. The Neotropic was about
2/3rds the size of the nearby Double-crested. Bird had the smaller relative
bill and white border on the gape, which was pointed. Tail was relatively
longer than a Double-crested. If approved, it may be the first for the San
Luis Valley.

Another exciting feature was the fact that I saw 5 species of gulls on the
lake today. The Herring Gull that I found a while back is still there,
along with RB, Bonaparte's, Franklin's and a large gull that appears
initially to be a 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Its a great time to be out there enjoying the new greenery and birds
flitting in it!

[cobirds] Diminishing Cranes

2023-03-28 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Just got back from a spring break with the fam to SE Arizona and trying to
get caught up. A morning trip to the Monte Vista Refuge shows that crane
numbers have vastly decreased in the last week, and only a few hundred here
and there were to be found. Geese still seem fairly abundant with 3-5000
Cackling, Canada, Snow, and Ross's geese still present. A lone Greater
Yellowlegs was standing on the edge of the ice and looked a bit confused
since the zero temps of last night re-froze so much of the former open
water. Yellow-headed Blackbirds arrive about April 1st!

they are spread out across the Valley. Ducks such as Pintail, Am Wigeon,
Ring-necked, Redhead, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye are also present in
the flocks. Red-winged Blackbirds are starting to sing from the cattail
heads. Hope to see you during the upcoming crane festival next weekend!

[cobirds] Rusty Blackbirds at Blanca Wetlands

2023-02-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
My wife Lisa does wetland water work and is a biologist at Blanca Wetlands.
One of her monitoring game cameras picked up a bird that looked a lot like
Rusty Blackbird. I went out looking a few days later and came up empty. But
yesterday, she found the bird, and turns out to be a minimum of three,
maybe 5 birds out there.

Here's the catch however. The area closes for the nesting season on the
15th Feb, in 3 days. Couple that with incoming storms and the window of
opportunity is slim.

The birds seem to frequent the watchable wildlife area, in the Russian
olives surrounding the lake immediately north of the Watchable parking lot.

These birds represent the likely first records for the species in the San
Luis Valley.

On another subject, the cranes are returning to the Valley, so far in small
and widespread flocks. The bulk of them are yet to return.

We are starting to see and hear a few of the birds that bring excitement

for us to be watching in anticipation. We await the Refuge to turn on the

[cobirds] Monte Vista Christmas Count Results

2022-12-27 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
The day started at minus 8, but soon "warmed" to more moderate temps.
Fourteen hardy individuals braved the cold and counted 47 species which is
average for this count based on previous years. However, the numbers of all
birds were lower than usual with only 2378 individuals counted and there
was no snowcover. Best birds were Ferruginous Hawk, Prairie Falcon,
Cassin's Finch and a count week Yellow-rumped Warbler. With the moving of
our friend Susan Hochstetler to Idaho, our Rosy-finch count, usually many
dozens, was kept at zero, alas. Lisa G organized the count this year and
did a fine job. She asked me to forward the results to this listserve.
Happy Holidays all.

[cobirds] Lingering Cranes in San Luis Valley

2022-10-31 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
There seems to be plenty of cranes for viewing in the San Luis Valley. They
do not seem to want to leave as weather has been moderate and the grain
fields open with plenty of food. But the birds are spread out quite a bit
and you will find some scattered if you look and drive long enough. Try 2S
and 3E roads, and you should find some. The road to Smith Reservoir
usually has some as well.

[cobirds] Finaly Sabines Gulls

2022-10-03 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Persistence paid off and today I saw two juve Sabine's Gulls on Smith
Reservoir today. There may have been a third too. But the darn birds were
very flighty (duck hunting season?) and would not fly close for a quality
pic. I tried to tell them is was a camera, not a gun! They did noty listen!

The shorebirds from 2 weeks ago have greatly dwindled. Today 2 Baird's and
2 Least Sppr.

[cobirds] Laughing Gull and No Laughing Matter

2022-09-24 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
I have been spending a lot of time looking for Sabine's Gulls at Smith
Reservoir in Costilla County, with no luck thus far. But I have turned up
some interesting species along the way, including a 2nd winter Laughing
Gull, one of a few records for the San Luis Valley. In addition to that
gull, 4 Common Terns were perched on the sand bar on the west side of the
lake today. Shorebirds are also making a great showing with Baird's, Least,
Spotted, Western and Pectorals on the lakeshore.

Sad to say, and no laughing matter at all, I have had unfortunate recent
encounters with some of the human inhabitants that have been less than
pleasant (aggressive unleashed dogs, folks littering, etc). Just be aware
of that if you bird this fabulous lake. And don't let that deter you!

[cobirds] Our Amish Birder Friend is Moving

2022-08-21 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
I just received a letter from Susan Hochstetler, our Amish birder friend,
that she will be leaving the San Luis Valley. She has sold her place to a
non-birding relative, so we can expect that the vast flocks of Rosy-finches
she once fed, will have to disperse to other sources. Many of you know that
she would annually get between 300 and 500 rosy-finches at her feeders, to
the delight of many. People from as far as Denver would make a special trip
to see her wonderful assortment of Rosy-finches. And Susan kept meticulous
notes too of all birds seen. She truly loves the birds she has experienced.

Susan fed the birds even tho the cost was very high. Many of us helped with
occasional donations of seed or cash so she could keep the birds fed. I
know they brought her great joy in life. And she liked to share that joy
with others and was always welcoming to all who stopped by.

Most recently, she was able to hear the Yellow Rail! She said it was the
most exciting bird event of her year!

She lost her husband Martin a few years ago. She is moving to a different
state and lower elevations to be in a better situation and closer to her
family.

She really enjoyed birding in the Valley, albeit it was challenging since
she cannot drive and had to use horse and buggy at times. Other times, she
and her friends would get a driver and explore places farther away. She
made some excellent finds over the years.

So with melancholy and sadness, we must say farewell to Susan. If you would
like to, do stop by and say goodbye as she will be in her home a while
longer. If you would like to send her a card, contact me through gmail and
I will send you her address. You can also make a comment in this forum, and
I will incorporate it into a letter I will send her.

[cobirds] Yellow Rail Still Talking

2022-08-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
I went to listen to the Yellow Rail (s) tonite from 7:40 to 8:40 (sunset is
8:03). The west bird was nowhere to be heard in the 20 minutes I listened
there. I then moved up to the parking lot main area and stood and listened
for the next 40 minutes. The bird called very sporadically but it was
within 50 feet of the parking lot and sometimes as close as 15 feet. With
binoculars ready, I watched through the bullrush for a glimpse of this bird
but it was not to be. Three Sora were not shy, and tiptoed across the reeds
putting on a show. Marsh wrens, coots, and muskrats kept it interesting but
no Yellow Rail.

By 8:20, the last calls were heard. I for sure had one, but could not
definitively say there was a second for this night anyway.

[cobirds] Re: Gunnison Sage-Grouse Question

2022-08-07 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
If it is on National Forest, then each Forest has what is called a MVUM, or
Motor Vehicle Use Map. They are free at the FS office in Gunnison. They are
also on line, but are hard to print and see due to small scale.

BLM, at least in the San Luis Valley also has motor vehicle use maps and
they too are on line and easily printed. I would guess the BLM in Gunnison
also has them on their website. Good luck!

[cobirds] Yellow Rail Update Wed

2022-07-27 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
My daughter has wanted to hear them so we have been out there 3 times now.
Here are the results:

Monday eve 7:00 pm: Slight rains. Only click click was the patter of rain
on the hat. No birds.
Tuesday eve 7:00 pm: Slight breeze, overcast, no birds
Wed Morning 5:30 to 6:30 am: Overcast but no winds or rains. Took a while
to hear the first...near the west barricade and about 100 feet west of
there. This is a little farther west than usual. Daughter was happy to hear
it loud and clear. The bird near the parking lot was silent for most of the
hour...only finally vocalizing in the last 5 minutes.

females are not vocal, then we won't easily know if these birds are
breeding. But lets stay tuned and see how things evolve. Thanks for the

[cobirds] Suggestions to Visiting Birders Yellow Rail

2022-07-14 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Hi all. Went and did a late morning check on the Rails but none were
calling at 9:30. Too late I'd imagine. Mornings and evenings still seem to
be best and the early morning folks heard the birds.

But a fortuitous encounter and I bumped into my friend and Refuge Manage
Suzanne Beauchaine. We talked at length about this exciting bird/s. She was
excited too but also had some suggestions for birders to keep it real so to
speak.

She wanted folks to slow down on the Auto Tour Loop. The speed limit is 15
mph and I totally understand the anticipation after travelling so far, but
please keep it slow.

She also wants folks to stay behind the newly installed signs. It was hard
to tell exactly where things crossed the line but the barriers should clear
that up.

And again, please do not use playbacks. Lets keep it ethical for all.

I hope to be monitoring these unique birds over the coming weeks and will
post periodic updates. Thanks Eric for a fantastic and exciting find!

[cobirds] Bird Trip in Alamosa

2022-05-29 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Yesterday I led a bird trip for half a day around Alamosa hotspots. It was
planned for half a day as the winds were once again to be a factor in the
afternoon. We had an excellent morning and best birds were Gray Catbird, BC
Hummingbird, Western Tanagers, Black-necked Stilts, and a number of Great
Horned Owlets on their nests. This trip was our first gathering in two
years and was a celebration of birds and life.

[cobirds] San Luis Valley Update

2022-05-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
It has been tough birding for a few weeks now with unceasing strong winds
we have had. Not even early mornings are available as winds howl through
the night. So today, winds be danged, I birded the Malm Trail in Alamosa
figuring there was some protection from the wind. It actually turned out
well as the birds were also trying to get out of the wind into protected
cover. So highlites wereBlack-chinned Hummingbird at 15 feet,
Cordilleran Flycatcher, MacGillivrays Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Cinnamon
Teal, Bullocks Oriole and Hermit Thrush.

So maybe bird migrant numbers are increasing as I hoped.

Recently at MV NWR, there is a lone Snow Goose on the auto tour loop. Very
late!

[cobirds] Re: New Bird Recorded for San Luis Valley

2022-04-08 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
One correction and my apologies. I was submitting the Rare Bird Report and
it occurred to me that I better check the CBRC database. Lo and behold,
Tyler Stuart had reported some in 2016 in Conejos County 03/27/2016 that
were approved. So looks like mine are second report, with my apologies.

[cobirds] New Bird Recorded for San Luis Valley

2022-04-08 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
I am excited to report that the San Luis Valley has added a new bird to the
list (pending CBRC approval). The 15 Chestnut-collared Longspurs I saw at
Sanchez Reservoir were the first ever, and had never been reported in
Righter and Andrews, Bailey and Niedrach, Kingery, Wickersham, eBird and my
own records of 40 years.
This species was one I suspected should migrate through on occasion, since
they winter in southern NM and Arizona. They were found on a
very-much-overgrazed prairie on the east side of Sanchez Reservoir SWA,
which has been heavily grazed by the hundreds of feral horses in that
location. The sighting took place as I was headed fishing for the morning.
Unfortunately, I had my junker camera and was able to get some blurred pics
but enough to be diagnostic. If the ebird report is approved, you can
check it out on the Sanchez Reservoir Hotspot.

[cobirds] Farewell Cranes

2022-03-31 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
As I write this, 10:09 am scores of cranes are high aloft and headed north
on what appears to be favorable se winds aloft. You have to strain your
eyes to see these tiny specks against the vast blue sky. Last night I
still saw 4,000 birds at Monte Vista NWR but those will be dwindling on
favorable winds.

All in all, it was a bit of a strange year. The manicured and mowed barley
fields where normally birds flocked to feed in, were relatively avoided.
Many Birds seems to be flying some distance from the refuge morning and
evenings to other locations.

Birds did use the barley field to the west of the MNVWR Headquarters but
that is a long ways away and viewing not very favorable. During mid day,
there were 4 to 6,000 birds at the east side Hwy 15 turnout, so that went
well.

I really like the new hours that were approved recently. Now us
photographers can get into the refuge a little earlier to scout out birds,
clouds, winds and potential photographs.

Farewell to our friends until fall. Time to shift the focus to upland birds!

Thousands. They seem to be lingering somewhat this year and not sure why.
As of today 3/27, There still are at least 5K at Monte Refuge and 2K at
Smith Reservoir. Not many people out looking so you'll have the place to
yourself!

[cobirds] Still Good Numbers of Cranes

2022-03-18 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
A quick morning trip around the Monte Vista Refuge and still plenty of
cranes to be seen. I would guess they will be here for another week so
there is still time to come down and check them out. 8 to 10,000 birds
still on the Refuge. Many more spread out across the Valley.

[cobirds] Cranes are spreading out

2022-03-06 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
So the latest from here is that we have about 8,000 to 12,000 cranes at the
Monte Vista Refuge. (There are more in other locations in the Valley as
well.) Water has been flowing for some time now at the Refuge and reaching
new wetlands, and the birds are taking advantage of that. So now you can
see them on both sides of Hwy 15 (on east and west side turnouts), the auto
tour loop, 7S road, and toward the Research Unit, west on 8S. Each places
gives different aspects and lighting conditions for photographers. In
addition, plenty of Canada and Cackling Geese with one lone Ross's Goose
thrown in for you to find. So far, they are not using the 8S turnout
fields very much but things change daily it seems. Enjoy the cranes...they
are here today and...well you know how to finish!

[cobirds] Smith Reservoir Tundra Swan

2022-02-28 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Those coming to see the cranes in the next few weeks might want to swing by
Smith Reservoir, where today there was a wonderful assortment of
waterbirds, including a single first year Tundra Swan. The other species
included Common Goldeneye, American Wigeon, Northern Pintails, Lesser
Scaup, Bufflehead, Redhead, and Bald Eagle. There were about 2,100 Sandhill
Cranes lining the shores of the east half of the reservoir. Twenty snow
geese were also a nice sight to see. We (John Stump and I) would guess that
there was at least 5,000 birds on the partially frozen/open water lake
today.

[cobirds] Cranes Increasing in San Luis Valley

2022-02-28 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Numbers have come up since last week. I estimate about 2-3,000 birds
present on the Monte Vista Refuge, with many more scattered across the
Valley. Other birds at the Refuge include Canada and Cackling Geese,
Mallard, Green-wngd and Cinnamon Teal, Marsh Wren, Northern Harrier and
many Northern Pintails. A few Bald Eagles can be seen perching in localized
trees or terrorizing the other birds by flying or hunting near them.

We had a lovely cool day in the San Luis Valley with no snow cover. Because
of COVID, we conducted our count in family pods. So I am still waiting for
the overall results.

My "pod" had a great day and we enjoyed seeing Northern Shrike, Tree
Sparrows, Prairie Falcon, and Short-eared Owl. We totalled 27 species which
was good for any team at this time of year. More to come as I hear.

[cobirds] Mississippi Kite Researcher

2021-06-22 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Hi all:

I was recently contacted by a student at Angelo State doing research on
Mississippi Kite genetics. She had asked about the two (three seen later by
someone?) I found earlier this spring in Alamosa. That species is rare in
the San Luis Valley and we have no breeding records. Be that as it may, I
was going to suggest a few contacts for the eastern plains. I thought of
Brandon Percival and Duane Nelson. Is there anyone else that is a good
contact for this species? If you fellas are okay with it, I can connect you
with her email. Let me know with a reply.

2021-06-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com

South River Road: Bittern, Willow Flycatcher, Eared Grebe, Common
Yellowthroat.
Pikes Stockade: Blue Grosbeak, plenty of mosquitoes (non hi lite!) and one
very large Rattlesnake that we saw first!
John James Canyon area: Got Sagebrush Sparrow and 1 Black-throated Sparrow.
Cat Creek Loop: Plumbeous Vireo, Williamson's Sapsucker, Green-tailed
Towhee, and Pygmy Nuthatches.

Really nice to be able to bird from the same vehicle once again.

[cobirds] Mississippi Kites in Alamosa

2021-05-25 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Today there were two Mississippi Kites at the Malm Trail in Alamosa. We
have had about 6 observations of the species in the San Luis Valley up to
today, so far as I know. One was an adult male and the other a first-year
bird. They soared over the trail for quite some time, allowing for a number
of pics for the ebird file.

I wished we could have stayed longer but commitments, work, and
responsibilities required our return. The weather also was not helpful,
giving us ONLY a good 1/2 day of birding. Still would like to see the 22
warbler weekends of past.

[cobirds] SE Colorado Quick Trip

2021-05-04 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Lisa and I had limited time but managed a quick trip to SE Colorado
Monday-Tuesday. It is always a joy for us to get down that way and see
species we don't normally get in the San Luis Valley. Monday was
rainy/snowy and birds were hard to come by. Tuesday was better.
Hasty: Slow, cold and windy. Not much to be seen
Lamar CC: 2 Summer Tanagers, 2 Cardinals, Swainson's Thrush, 3 Lazuli
Buntings, pretty slim for Warblers.
Two Buttes: Nice variety but not like we remember in past years. Eastern
Phoebe, American Redstart, Swainsons Thrushes, Bullock's Oriole, Lewis's
Woodpecker...but again slim on warblers. A quick trip was way better than
no trip!

Some exciting birds were:
3 Caspian Terns
1 Herring Gull
2 BB Plovers
1 Sanderling
24 Western Sandpipers
22 least sandpipers
18 Willets
40 Marbled Godwits

[cobirds] Re: Changing Common Names of birds; example, Steller’s Jay

2021-04-24 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Really entertaining dialogue on naming birds, often named for the least
conspicuous feature. I also love bird names that might be longer than the
actual bird...like Northern Beardless Tyrannulet. (CuriousIs there a
Tyrannult with a beard?...My mind is picturing this!!) Along with Hugh's
disdain for Least (which I agree) would be the boastful and judgement
laddened "Greater"like Greater Yellowlegs.

[cobirds] Dunlin at San Luis Lake

2021-04-15 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Got out yesterday and could NOT beat the winds, which pummeled me from the
beginning with 20-40 mph blasts. Uggh I hate winds! Could not leave the
scope alone as the Zephyrs would surely have blown it over. Just the same,
birding was good with many shorebirds including 2 Dunlin. This bird is
considered rare to unusual in the San Luis Valley. It was there with Least,
Baird's, Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers. A lone Black-necked Stilt was
also good to see.

On another note, Home Lake in Monte Vista, will be undergoing some dredging
in the coming year and roads will be closed around it. The lake is being
drained today. The hope is to make the lake deeper so that we can avoid
winterkill on the fish. You can still bird the trees on the west side of
the lake, but waterbirds won't be there.

[cobirds] Re: News from Cherry Creek SP

2021-04-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Nice to remember our friend Bob. I just wrote a piece on the early days of
the Crane Festival here in Monte Vista. That means I dusted off the
recollections from over 30 years ago. Back then, Bob and Wendy were the
premier photographers capturing the essence of the cranes and other San
Luis Valley wildlife in those early days. This was before social networking
and I believe Bob (and Wendy) brought the uniqueness and fantastic nature
of the Valley to many on the front range though his/their photography. Bob
gave "slide shows" back then as programs for the Crane Festival. He offered
some of their framed photographs as prizes. We became friends very early in
those days as folks often got both of us mixed up with the similarity of
names. Those were film camera days and were primitive by today's
technology. Anyway, nice to remember Bob...

[cobirds] Osprey Pair Building nest

2021-04-09 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Today I was very surprised to see a pair of osprey building a nest at Home
Lake SWA! This is the first time we have had any build a nest here in the
Valley flats. We see them in migration here but no breeding evidence. Here
is a pic from this morning.

[cobirds] Farewell Cranes

2021-04-03 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Today under mild conditions, the crane departures have been constant since
about 9:30 this morning. Always sad to see them go. But then the excitement
begins to focus on migrating landbirds. How can a birder ever be bored?

John Stump and I birded together this week for the first time since the
pandemic started over a year ago. We both have had our shots and it was
very enjoyable to get out and bird together. Numerous Sagebrush Sparrow
east of Antonito made the trip great from the beginning. One sat up and
sang which was wonderful.

[cobirds] Don't Despair

2021-03-12 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Just got done talking to the manager at the Sandhill Inn in Monte Vista. He
said the storm has caused weekend cancellations so that he went from 68
percent occupancy to 17%. And the way this storm is amping up, I think
staying home is a good choice for the coming weekend. But don't despair if
you are a crane enthusiast. The birds will be around for another two weeks
for plenty of viewing opportunity in case you want to re-schedule.

[cobirds] Latest on the Birds at Monte Vista Refuge

2021-03-04 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Springtime is such a time of transition as temperatures warm and migrating
birds are on the move. Things even change by the day and are doing so at
the Monte Vista Refuge right now! Yesterday, we saw temperatures hit 51
degrees and much of the areas that were frozen, were suddenly thawed. Birds
took advantage of this change in the available water and are now roosting
for the night and feeding in locations somewhat different than a few days
ago. Be aware that birds leave their roosting areas to feed in the barley
fields and do that mornings and evenings.

The auto tour loop is still good with pockets of cranes roosting in
wetlands. You can get pretty close to some of those pockets for excellent
photographic opportunities. Many of the auto tour loop birds will fly to
the barley fields west of the headquarters, where today there were about
3,000 cranes. The 8S has a few cranes but not the numbers we hope for. They
are also avoiding the east side turnout near the wellhead and I am not sure
why. Numerous ducks can be seenCinnamons, GW Teal, Ring-necked,
Mallards, Pintails, Redheads, Gadwalls, Bufflehead, and coots.

A major change is that water has now reached the 2E and 7S areas, and
8-1 cranes are feeding in that area. Add to that, thousands of Cackling
and Canada geese and you have a fabulous showcase of birds. Mallards
swirled in circles above the barley field this morning as if in a
cauldron. It was quite a sight to see and the raucous calls and honks of
the passing birds was powerful and magnificent.

As luck would have it, I saw something odd in the hundreds of cackling
geese and knew right away it was a Brant (of the nigricans, pacific
variety). I no sooner got the camera up when the bird flew right at me, and
I got a few shots in the cloudy low-light conditions as it flew past. If I
had been a minute later, I would have never seen it. This is only the third
record I am aware of for our Valley, with previous birds (all nigricans)
seen in 1992, and the 2015 bird seen by many. Look for it in the 7S and
2E area.

Cranes are well scattered across the Valley. Yesterday, hundreds were in
barley fields near Fort Garland. Lisa Rawinski reports 1500 birds are along
the Stanley road and east.

And there are some oddities as well. I have posted the crane images, brant
and oddities on my website under "recent additions" if you'd like to check
it out.

Zenfolio | John Rawinski

So what is next? Well the tractor equipment is out in the fields and I
expect them to be moving soon which will stir up grain and food for the
birds. So more shifts are possible.

John Rawinski
Monte Vista, CO
Enjoy them while they are here!

[cobirds] Cranes Overhead in the San Luis Valley!

2021-02-11 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Yesterday, a few waves of Sandhill Cranes came soaring into the Valley,
bringing with them their signature calls of springtime. What excitement and
joy. At the Monte Vista Refuge, I viewed about 200 birds but that will
rapidly increase in the next few days. The Refuge will turn on the water
this week and this will draw many more cranes, geese and ducks. A few
Cackling Geese were present. Also note, there will not be a Crane Festival
this year, but nothing says you cannot come down and enjoy the birds on
your own. Will keep you posted. Remember the best time to view maximum
numbers is about the first to second week of March. See you out there.

[cobirds] Re: Aggressive Owl in Superior

2021-02-03 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Agree. Seems better to let it be. Maybe warn hikers of that situation.
